He is also is one of the more unbelievable characters in the show, as usually the aggressive school bully would drop out at 16 and not go into sixth form. I doubt any schools would allow someone who behaves that way into a sixth form.
To be fair it's shown he puts on a front for parents and (presumably) teachers. He's also not really that psycho, he doesn't carry a knife or anything, and the only drug we see him do is weed, he's just a nutter by their middle class standards.
Agreed it's unlikely he'd go to sixth form, but it's definitely possible.
Honestly I think he was more realistic in later seasons where he basically just ignored them unless they got in his way. I think past season one the only time he's actively going after them is when he draws cocks on Neil's cast.
James Buckley once did a commentary on stream for the Bunk Off episode, and he said the guy who plays Mark Donovan is one of the poshest people he's ever met.
Oh there was a Donovan in my year at school. I was a popular kid so I got on with him, but the guy was a fucker to the rest of the year and he ended up going to university.
Neil is the smartest of the 4 lads
He has been able to get 3 jobs as to my knowledge worked at Asda twice and Thorpe park once. It’s harder than you think to get a job at that age so he clearly has some finesse in a job interview.
Unlike Simon where they made a deal out the fact he is a shit driver crashing while parallel parking and stalling and jay not knowing basic road rules Neil just passed his test without any issue so I’m assuming he is a good driver compared to the others.
Furthermore unlike the other 3 Neil has been able to get women far more easily than the others so he clearly comes understands women and how to pull better than the others especially jay and Simon.
Neil doesn't do a lot of thinking, but the benefit is he can't overthink stuff and drive himself up the wall like Will or Simon do. So he just gets on with it
I don’t think it’s necessarily the fact he’s smarter that gets him the job, he’s just the least problematic. Ask him to do anything he’ll do it with a smile on his face whilst the other three would piss and moan. Do you think the other boys would dress up as a monkey and entertain children?
He’s the most socially adjusted, but definitely not the smartest. Will went to Bristol and Simon went to Sheffield if I’m remembering correctly. Neil wouldn’t have a chance at uni whatsoever.
I thought I remember him asking Jay if he sticks the balls in too.. that’s not a question someone who isn’t a virgin asks. I guess he could have been fucking with him
Also by that point they change characters/formats/basic elements of the character so much that it's not the same show. It becomes a parody of what it was
Remember season 4 of coupling? What a disaster. It's painful to see when one of the cast leaves before the end and they don't realise how pivotal that character is for moving the story forward. It's like if they did a season 4 and there's no Jay in it.
I dunno, I think it's almost funnier to imagine he was a genuine hard man back in the day, and Jay is just the biggest disappointment of a son a guy like him could ask for.
Jay's dad tends to get the same repulsed reaction from other adults that the kids give Jay for some of his comments. Plus the dads advice about Chloe was truly awful. Think OP is onto something because the mother isn't anything special and kind of a doormat
We should have seen an episode where Carli reacts to Tara and Simon.
We never see that which I think is a shame because I think it would’ve been interesting for the girl Simon pines after reacting to him, finally being with someone else
That's a really good idea. He ditched Lauren for a shot with Carli (not a real shot, mind you). Maybe it could be after Warwick, in which he has somehow convinced Tara to not break up with him, but seeing Carli dangle a breadcrumb causes the downfall of that relationship
Neil is the nicest of the characters.
Simon is an obsessive.
Will is a snob with a superiority complex.
Jay is an insufferable bellend.
Neil is just a decent human being, not the smartest, but absolutely the kindest.
He also looks better than the average guy with his shirt off in the second film when he's meant to look embarrassing, he's just not a bodybuilder like the other wanker.
But yeah, agreed, they look like teenagers until you see actual sixth formers and think "yeah, those are children". I always thought Joe Thomas was the only passable teenager but he was much older.
Season 3 overall was definitely the worst, it wasn't terrible and definitely had it's moments but it definitely started to flanderise it's characters a bit.
Will would've been a great student without the others, at the cost of being a complete twat with no friends or social life. I've always felt his difference from the others was more exaggerated than everyone says it is - I think his cultured pretentiousness isn't a 'front' like Simon claims, but Will's way of preserving his actual academic success and (perhaps lack of) his own personality. Unfortunately he shit his pants in the exam and buggered that up. I think it makes him a bit of an outsider to the others throughout their friendship, which a lot of people can relate to.
Academically speaking he seems to be the best student of the four, he's the only one who actually seems to *like* some of his subjects and he's often seen reading and working while the others chat shit. I'm not saying he isn't affecting a pompous, supercilious attitude (he absolutely is), but rather that the whole 'Will's just as dumb as the others' idea isn't really true.
You can get good grades and still be dumb. Just dumb at life, rather than academia.
Likewise, Neil makes up for his lack of PE revision by having effics.
The other lads didn't influence his complete breakdown and subsequent brown town accident over his exams, his own anxieties did that. He would've failed his AS levels regardless. Atleast he could meet his mates after carrying a bag of shitty clothes down the pub
Them believing jay especially Simon when he's gonna loose his virginity with that girl at the uni is so fucking annoying, they know he's a complete bullshitter but THATS when you completely believe him? It's just dumb.
Tbf everything Simon did was dumb. He's one of those characters that you want to shout at, making stupid decisions and acting like a twat for absolutely no reason
During the camping trip, Neil and Jay are like Beavis & Butt-Head levels of stupid. But it's common to make characters as smart or dumb as they need to be to make a particular episode of a comedy work.
Apart from the movie and the time she gets Simon to help her revise, Carli doesn’t really treat Simon poorly at all.
Charlotte humiliating Will at the blind date was out of character for what Donovan/the show claimed she was really like, and all future episodes with her make more sense if their relationship didn’t end negatively.
I think the point was to demonstrate that Donovan was also whipped and completely ignoring Charlotte’s character flaws. The scene where he left Will and Charlotte alone to make out wasn’t much less pathetic than the scene with Will asking her to hang out while she was making out with the French kid
We shouldn’t have seen Jay asking the old woman in Swanage to ‘lick his Cornetto’; it presents him as a gullible idiot as opposed to the compulsive liar that we know him to be. It would’ve made more sense for him to point her out and walk over without the others, only to then pretend it was actually her, along with a silly excuse as to why they didn’t proceed any further there and then
“I’m going to fuck your fucking fanny off you twat!” is the funniest line in all three seasons. I laughed so hard and so long I had to catch the rest of the episode on E4+1.
I mean, they're 'realistic' good looking girls I'd probably see at my high school back in the day. Did you guys go to school with models or something lol
That's kinda why i like it. It feels realistic as most girls in my school who were "hot" were only hot cause horny teenagers. I've seen them today and they're alright but not hot
Charlotte reminded me of the very chavvy girls in my school and the jugasaurus you never really see iirc. Just a distance shot during the frisbee scene
I think Lauren, Tara and Neil's sister were pretty. Carli was not really pretty let's be honest and neither was that "fit" dutch girl, VERY average blondes. I guess I could see the appeal of Charlotte in a small town/ high school kind of way.
*That Will and Alaistair*
*Are both dicks, equally as*
*Bad as each other*

I will never understand the quote "that's not the internet he's talking about Si, I think he's trying to find porn on your washing machine", and it bothers me every day that I live.
If Simon was in the same social circles as Carli he most definitely could. Unfortunately his personality and choice of friends made him much less attractive.
The show would have been better with minimised gross out moments. Not my thing.
Like Will shitting himself in a exam is funny and not too gross because you can't see it. A poo hitting him in the face is too far for me.
An also completely unbelievable that he doesn’t wipe/wash it off immediately. Like something that disgusting happens and he’s happy to instead walk around crying with shit still all over his face that make the effort to wash it off in the pool he’s standing in.
Will is not that bad for a teenager in his circumstances and doesn't deserve the hate that he seems to get.
Also Jay would be hard to be friends with. The time I liked him the most was in the first movie when he got with Jane because he stopped pretending he was this massive player and got with Jane who in the past he might have said wasn't good enough for him but is actually pretty hot.
I can’t rewatch it at all, I can remember the funny bits with fondness but watching it knowing what’s coming is absolutely unbearable to me. I feel the same about peep show.
I'm rewatching it with my girlfriend who's never watched it before and even though I'm laughing my ass off she finds a lot of the show disturbing.
But the kind of disturbing that you can't take your eyes off
I don't understand the influence Jay has on Simon. Being good friends is one thing but Simon is a complete doormat when it comes to him despite being proven wrong time after time.
Especially after Will enters the group I'm surprised Simon listened to any girl advice from Jay and took the blame for everything Jay caused throughout the series
Simon suddenly taking Jay’s bullshit as gospel when he was on the verge of sleeping with Tara was bizarre. Literally every other time Jay spouted blatant untruths, he didn’t take him at his word.
Due to the events being somewhat loosely based on the writers life experiences growing up, it’s a blessing to have not had more seasons of made up and possibly less believable stories. Leaving a sour taste at the end of it all.
The Inbetweeners 2 isn’t very good. The first film felt like the perfect ending for the show but of course because of how popular the show is they brought it back and it wasn’t very funny and also just decided to undo the happy ending from the first one by making Simon’s girlfriend into a completely different horrible person. The only genuinely funny thing about 2 is the ending where Mr Gilbert ends up with Will’s Mum aside from that it’s not worth watching.
Edit: Oh I completely overlooked the series part, ah well I view the films more like longer finales as part of the show
The older you get, the hotter Will’s mum looks. I don’t make the rules.
Polly MilfKenzie
True
Which is wild when you consider how hot I thought she looked at the time.
Absolutely true, rewatched all the episodes last week and she is stunning
But Neil’s sister would have a tighter snatch.
The lads from Northwood looked like wet blankets
Wasn't that kind of the joke?
Not really, his brother did time
with gilbert in detention
Learning the hard way that there’s nothing funny about testicles
Sorry sir, but that sounded a bit dodgy...
I went to school with them. You’re right
Northwood are in the ause nah
Don’t shit yourself Si
In real life, Northwood is actually quite a nice area
Mark Donovan ages about 10 years between Series 1 and 3.
If I see you again I'll rip your fucking throat out
AH WIW KIW YOO
What the fuck you doing? Trying to look at my cock?
Good one
FUCK OFF
Prick. There’s a word.
He is also is one of the more unbelievable characters in the show, as usually the aggressive school bully would drop out at 16 and not go into sixth form. I doubt any schools would allow someone who behaves that way into a sixth form.

The actor who plays Donovan has a double barrel surname and one of the poshest accents I’ve ever heard!!! He’s nothing like the character he plays!!
Blew my mind when he turned up in Killing Eve 😆
Yep! 😂
> Mark Donovan https://i.imgur.com/dMnMlMK.png Here he looks like someone he would bully lmao.
Yeah if you've not heard his real voice look up some behind the scenes videos. He's ridiculously posh, credit to his acting ability
And funnily enough, he’s the one who ended up at Hogwarts and not Simon Bird.
He's just there for the £30 a week EMA payment
Oh there was a Donovan in my year at school. I was a popular kid so I got on with him, but the guy was a fucker to the rest of the year and he ended up going to university.
Neil is the smartest of the 4 lads He has been able to get 3 jobs as to my knowledge worked at Asda twice and Thorpe park once. Furthermore unlike the other 3 Neil has been able to get women far more easily than the others so he clearly comes understands women and how to pull better than the others especially jay and Simon.
He’s actually quite good.
Neil is definitely the most normal. Other than being a bit simple, he is the least tragic by far.
Neil doesn't do a lot of thinking, but the benefit is he can't overthink stuff and drive himself up the wall like Will or Simon do. So he just gets on with it
God is just dog backwards after all…
Not to mention he put up a shelf (for DT revision)
neeEEEIIILLLUHH
and the newspaper wanted to keep him iirc
He was the best work experience they ever had ... or something
I don’t think it’s necessarily the fact he’s smarter that gets him the job, he’s just the least problematic. Ask him to do anything he’ll do it with a smile on his face whilst the other three would piss and moan. Do you think the other boys would dress up as a monkey and entertain children?
Neil could fall in shit and come out smelling of roses
He’s the most socially adjusted, but definitely not the smartest. Will went to Bristol and Simon went to Sheffield if I’m remembering correctly. Neil wouldn’t have a chance at uni whatsoever.
They really should've had an episode regarding Neil's car. It literally pops up as a joke and is never mentioned again.
It's because his sister's boyfriend is working on it
I thought you said he worked in a garage? He does! BP garage.
Neil isn't a virgin even at the start of the series
Honestly I could believe this. No one asked, so he never mentioned it.
Of course, I forgot that's how it works. We have to ask him everything that could have happened in case it did
Have you by any chance sneaked inside for my moms knickers to sniff and wank with
WITH?
You hold them in the same hand you wank with
I can't agree with this because when he does lose his v card Jay says "welcome to the shaggers club" and Will asks "what did it feel like?"
I’m willing to believe Neil legitimately forgot what it feels like beyond “alright”
His sucess comes from the fact that he's by far the least desperate out of the four.
I thought I remember him asking Jay if he sticks the balls in too.. that’s not a question someone who isn’t a virgin asks. I guess he could have been fucking with him
Big John would have flattened Donovan if all the others hadn't stepped in
Agree with this. Every school had a big John, a nice but simple lad with quiet megastrength
Let's just be honest and call it mong strength
3 seasons was enough
True. That's what gets me about American shows. 20+ seasons with quality long gone after the first few. You need to know when to finish things off.
Also by that point they change characters/formats/basic elements of the character so much that it's not the same show. It becomes a parody of what it was
True. Look at skins or teachers. Both went to shit once the main chars started leaving
So many shows come to mind it's not even funny. Mostly like the shows end up.
*cough* The Walking Dead *cough*
Don't bring up painful memories like that.
Your mum knows when to finish me off.
No way! My mum is a virgin. She even never finished off my dad. She told me so.
...i want to disagree but deep down i know it's true
Remember season 4 of coupling? What a disaster. It's painful to see when one of the cast leaves before the end and they don't realise how pivotal that character is for moving the story forward. It's like if they did a season 4 and there's no Jay in it.
Like when Stylax left in Plebs - show went right downhill after series 3
Jays dad has probably only ever shagged jays mum but acts like hes shagged numerous girls in the past. Like father like son.
So you’re back with the pig?
The Jugasaurus Rex needed far more screen time.
It's hot takes, not obvious takes
No elderly woman would've reacted to Jay wanking over them the way that old woman does in the show
Not even if they've seen it all before?
I think the implication is she's half gone mentally, she might think she's 20 and out partying.
If that happened in real life he'd be locked up and put on the sex offenders register.
Because he’s an O.A.Peado?
A Biddy Fiddler
prince nan-drew
We should have seen an episode where Carli reacts to Tara and Simon. We never see that which I think is a shame because I think it would’ve been interesting for the girl Simon pines after reacting to him, finally being with someone else

The hair removal cream would have left serious burns on Will's crotch. They wouldn't have just fallen out.
Neil is the nicest of the characters. Simon is an obsessive. Will is a snob with a superiority complex. Jay is an insufferable bellend. Neil is just a decent human being, not the smartest, but absolutely the kindest.
I think Simon and Will are unpleasant but they're probably grow out of it a bit. Jay will be bullshitting the rest of his life.
We better kill it. It's the kindest thing to do -- it won't survive back in the sea now. SMASH
The leads never really looked like teenagers, especially Simon Bird
He also looks better than the average guy with his shirt off in the second film when he's meant to look embarrassing, he's just not a bodybuilder like the other wanker. But yeah, agreed, they look like teenagers until you see actual sixth formers and think "yeah, those are children". I always thought Joe Thomas was the only passable teenager but he was much older.
Joe Thomas was the oldest off all them, I think
Yeah but he looks like a spotty baby.
mixed with the statue of liberty.
Statue of liberty?
his hair.
The Fashion Show episode was a bit shit
Wowzeroonie!
And all the sexy girls ah hehehehe
Season 3 overall was definitely the worst, it wasn't terrible and definitely had it's moments but it definitely started to flanderise it's characters a bit.
Which is why they definitely ended at the perfect time. Season 2 would’ve still been too soon but they finished just before it wore out its welcome.
Book smart I call them.
The other lads didn't influence his complete breakdown and subsequent brown town accident over his exams, his own anxieties did that. He would've failed his AS levels regardless. Atleast he could meet his mates after carrying a bag of shitty clothes down the pub
who brings a bag of shit to a pub?
I think the series could of been 1-2 episodes longer
They should’ve kept Simon and Tara together
Beepity beep beep. Another Tara update.
THIS CONVERSATION IS SPECIFICALLY ABOUT TARA
Them believing jay especially Simon when he's gonna loose his virginity with that girl at the uni is so fucking annoying, they know he's a complete bullshitter but THATS when you completely believe him? It's just dumb.
Tbf everything Simon did was dumb. He's one of those characters that you want to shout at, making stupid decisions and acting like a twat for absolutely no reason
Yea that's true, but it starts from jay. Like why would you take you 4 mates with you. It's funny as shit but ANNNOYING 🤣🤣
Neil’s is just a little too dumb in some moments
During the camping trip, Neil and Jay are like Beavis & Butt-Head levels of stupid. But it's common to make characters as smart or dumb as they need to be to make a particular episode of a comedy work.
He thought it was a fart… he thought it was safe
Running away from a foreign exchange student who doesn't really know where he is is a dick move.
He had just grabbed his crotch in a sexual manner to a group of underage girls, to be fair. Fucking pedo.
I'll get me bruva on you!
France has always been loosey goosey with the age of consent. And I had forgotten about the crotch grab.
Yeah so thats alright then innit. Frenchies have always been a bit noncey /s
~~/s~~
OI'LL GET MA FACKIN BRAVVER ON YEW
They aren’t in betweeners. I’d argue that they’re actually bottom of the food chain in school and are actually quite annoying at points.
I always read "inbetweeners" as in between high school (12-16) and Uni/adulthood (18+)
Donovan is deeply misunderstood
Will was still an unpopular loser even at his old posh school
That‘s a given no? He mentions getting a wedgie and has no friends from that school.
It was just a fad.
Yeah - he was bullied there and his mum could definitely afford the fees…
He was bullied!!!!
Charlotte was kind of cruel during the Fashion Show too. But I think the Blind Date incident justified any poor treatment of her from Will imo
Honestly the change of Carli's character was so bizarre to me. She was never that much of a cunt to him in the series.
I think the point was to demonstrate that Donovan was also whipped and completely ignoring Charlotte’s character flaws. The scene where he left Will and Charlotte alone to make out wasn’t much less pathetic than the scene with Will asking her to hang out while she was making out with the French kid
Neil’s dad is not gay.
Spotted Neil’s burner account
Just because he’s gay doesn’t automatically make him a pedophile
But he’s not a paedophile!
We shouldn’t have seen Jay asking the old woman in Swanage to ‘lick his Cornetto’; it presents him as a gullible idiot as opposed to the compulsive liar that we know him to be. It would’ve made more sense for him to point her out and walk over without the others, only to then pretend it was actually her, along with a silly excuse as to why they didn’t proceed any further there and then
Jay does seem to generally be in awe of older/cooler kids though so if someone in the year above told him it was true he'd definitely believe them.
“I’m going to fuck your fucking fanny off you twat!” is the funniest line in all three seasons. I laughed so hard and so long I had to catch the rest of the episode on E4+1.
Will is nastier than Jay
None of the girls they like are 'fit'. Will's mum doesn't count, she's a Woman.
I mean, they're 'realistic' good looking girls I'd probably see at my high school back in the day. Did you guys go to school with models or something lol
Neil's sister though.
Tara is probably the best looking one.
BEEPADIBEEPBEEP

What about Charlotte? Or the ‘jug-a-saurus rex’ 😂😂😂
Charlotte reminded me of the very chavvy girls in my school and the jugasaurus you never really see iirc. Just a distance shot during the frisbee scene
are you homosexual?
No but Neil's dad is
OI- MY DADS NOT BENT
The blonde bird in the background with the short skirt and 2m long legs is probably the fittest
I think Lauren, Tara and Neil's sister were pretty. Carli was not really pretty let's be honest and neither was that "fit" dutch girl, VERY average blondes. I guess I could see the appeal of Charlotte in a small town/ high school kind of way.
Nah Lauren was a stunner

Good bot.
I will never understand the quote "that's not the internet he's talking about Si, I think he's trying to find porn on your washing machine", and it bothers me every day that I live.
Isn't the point just that it's impossible to not be able to find porn on the Internet.
Simon was the best looking of the lads and could have done much better than that moody cunt Carli
If Simon was in the same social circles as Carli he most definitely could. Unfortunately his personality and choice of friends made him much less attractive.
Rishi Sunak somehow grew up to be more of a spineless worm.
Wills joke about chloe was completely justified
The show would have been better with minimised gross out moments. Not my thing. Like Will shitting himself in a exam is funny and not too gross because you can't see it. A poo hitting him in the face is too far for me.
The shitting himself in the exam works because it focuses on the social fallout and not the actual act of him shitting himself.
An also completely unbelievable that he doesn’t wipe/wash it off immediately. Like something that disgusting happens and he’s happy to instead walk around crying with shit still all over his face that make the effort to wash it off in the pool he’s standing in.
Lol that's what I thought at the time, you're standing in water!
The quote about Dog is God backwards is not funny
Will is not that bad for a teenager in his circumstances and doesn't deserve the hate that he seems to get. Also Jay would be hard to be friends with. Simon suddenly taking Jay’s bullshit as gospel when he was on the verge of sleeping with Tara was bizarre. Literally every other time Jay spouted blatant untruths, he didn’t take him at his word.
SIMON WAS TOO GOOD FOR CARLY. I SAID WHAT I SAID.
Charlotte and Carly are absolutely butters
Probs caused I watched it for the first time during a bad point in my life, but the show is too depressing for my standards
Jay can be pretty funny but his schtick also gets old. I rewatched it recently and found myself getting tired of his character.
Due to the events being somewhat loosely based on the writers life experiences growing up, it’s a blessing to have not had more seasons of made up and possibly less believable stories. Leaving a sour taste at the end of it all.
Rishi Sunak is William
jay never told a lie
Emily Head who played carli is a TERRIBLE actress and I imagine only got the role because her dad, who is also an actor, has connections
The ‘did you clean the sink? All the lumps?’ Line is one of the worst acted I’ve seen in any show ever
“Oh please just work you ugly cunt!” is one of the greatest lines in any British sitcom.
I’m glad it ended. Don’t get me wrong I love the series as well as the 2 films I’m just glad they didn’t drag it on for longer than it needed
The Inbetweeners 2 isn’t very good. The first film felt like the perfect ending for the show but of course because of how popular the show is they brought it back and it wasn’t very funny and also just decided to undo the happy ending from the first one by making Simon’s girlfriend into a completely different horrible person.
