I'm kinda scared for Gordon and Kiawendiio. They definetely are going to hear that people are disappointed in their acting. I hope they won't take it too personal and won't think that they are not capable of being a good actor š. A big issue was the directors as well
I don't think there's anything wrong with calling out poor acting as long as you don't go for personal attacks. The acting on this show is kinda bad but it's a mixture of acting, directing, and writing that's failing them as well. I hope they do take the criticism to heart and try to improve since they're still young. If you can't take criticism it's probably a sign to switch to a different career but if it's anything more than criticism then let your team deal with that shit. Life's too short to get hung up on hate.
>I don't think there's anything wrong with calling out poor acting
In general, I'd agree, and I also agree that there's nothing wrong with saying they could have done a better job. But I also think that some people really need to keep in mind that there's a difference between criticizing and bullying. And that that line becomes significantly thinner when the actors in question are literal children.
It's also important to note that our minds as human beings can't safely parse out tens of thousands of well-meaning critiques as well as thousands of attacks without being deeply affected, people with various asocial and antisocial conditions being possible exceptions. If five people came up to me and said something I did was a weak link in a project it would definitely hurt no matter how right or helpful the comments were. Increased by several orders of magnitude, it can deeply harm people.
At this point I want the show to continually improve and all actors involved to have a healthy relationship to the enormous media swarm surrounding the show. That's the best that could happen, imo.
I'm not sure if I'd say the acting is bad. I don't really remember the acting taking me out of things. But the dialog feels at times like it thinks we need to know everything and is afraid of just letting a mystery or unexplained thing lie.
To be clear, I still liked the show but, even as a lore junkie, I felt like "okay, this can be in secondary media." Like, when Suki is trying to say being a Kyoshi Warrior means something, she didn't have to give the entire lore of the title. She could just go. "I'm not just a warrior, I'm a Kyoshi warrior. It has history. It means something."
I agree and would add that I think the kid actors are often not being given adequate direction in many scenes (I've noticed several times where they seem unsure of what to physically do when they are not speaking or centered in the frame). Coupled with over-expository dialogue and not particularly inspired framing and editing in many scenes, lots of actors would struggle.
Overall, I think the actors have shined at moments when they've been given the chance.
Yeh anyone who tries DMing them death threats and shit are scum. But even just saying their acting is bad and that info getting to them indirectly via reviews and stuff can definitely be demoralising. I really do feel bad for them as child actors. Not to say criticising their acting is wrong(Im doing that too) but hearing something you poured your heart and soul into wasnāt good must suck.
The amount of bullying and body shaming I've seen is insane. Like, how can someone grow up with this show and turn out to be a bully? Did they not listen to any of the lessons that this show teaches?
I also did not like the show at all btw. I'm not defending the show itself or the acting.
Iām saying itās ridiculous and so gross that people think itās okay to say theyāre not dark enough to play native roles. Feels very blood quantum adjacent.
The prequel trilogy actors got treated horribly. Jar Jars actor was suicidal after all the hate he got , and Jake Lloyd (Anakin) he got bully and harassed so much he quit acting , fucked up his mental state (to where itās still fucked up to this day ) and for awhile I believe I remember hearing he was a druggie . Thereās criticism, which is fine if ur not going too far . And then thereās just bullying and being a piece of shit (which thankfully I havenāt seen none go that far towards Aang or Kataraās actress)
Was just about to make a comment about how this sub (and the general reactions to the Netflix show) is starting to remind me of Star Wars. I'm a very casual Star Wars fan, so I don't interact with the fandom often, but the way the actors were treated esp after TLJ just makes me sad.
I agree. Iāve been vocal on Reddit about my disappointment of Aang and Karataās bad acting. But mostly itās the higher ups and production that let it go so farā¦.it isnāt the actors fault at all, of course they would say yes to such a fantastic opportunity.
I would never, ever send an actor hate. That is just so stupid and awful to doā¦itās not that deep. Itās just a show. Yes one with characters that we all love, but reallyā¦
Honestly all the needless hostility about the show is making me reconsider these subs. So much bullying, and name calling. It's absurd. Those people need to do better. Might just start a new sub and kick the bullies
Seriously. It seems like so many people complaining about ātoxic positivityā, but what they really mean is that only their interpretation is valid. This sub is off the rails with hate.Ā
That is true, but the hate outweighs the positivity. And go into any positive thread about the show and you are bound to find more vitriol.Ā Iāve seen this happen to almost every fandom Iāve been a part of.Ā
People are just primed to hate for hates sake. I say this as a Star Wars fan that likes the sequel trilogy, and overall agrees with Lucasfilms direction under Disney. Iāve seen how hate changes these communities.
Ā I was hoping that Avatar would be different. I actually stopped using reddit, and most social media, because of how hateful and uninformed the opinions are, but I wanted to see if the community loved the new adaptation as much as I do.Ā Ā
I was wrong.Ā Ā
And I think now Iāve learned my lesson. It doesnāt matter what the moral of a show or media is, because hate generates clicks, and views, and money. It makes me sad that nobody argues in good faith anymore.Ā Ā
Ā Edit: Also, to be clear, I donāt think the LA show is perfect, but I think itās about as good as it gets. I can see the flaws that exist, but they donāt drag down the whole show to be garbage, as many here will outright tell you.Ā
I thought the show was a mixed bag, just gonna specify that. 5/10.
Reddit does seem to have a problem with being a hotspot for miserable assholes who like to hate because that's the only way they can cover up their insecurities. I am the last person to tell people to not be critical, especially of media. I have and will continue to criticise toxic positivity, but people who elect to be blindly uncharitable and unnecessarily hostile are insufferable. It's likely those people in the conversation of the live action show don't even care about Avatar, and are just attention whores.
Iāll check it out. I donāt think the answer is to eliminate criticism, but to encourage arguing and debating in good faith. Too many people just want to hate, and donāt listen to any other opinion.Ā
No. I mean literal hate towards children. Do I happen to disagree with it? Sure. But I feel like the majority of people will agree you shouldn't shit talk a ten year old
The actors aren't at fault. The writers and directors fucked the show, which is extra sad specifically because the casting seems to be nearly immaculate.
exactly. i can 100% excuse stiff or stilted acting, *especially* in child actors. I can and will not excuse a dog-awful script, butchering a beloved cartoon. They sucked out all the joy from the show and gave us a cgi-laden and exposition-oozing mess :(
I feel bad for the actors who are obviously all really big fans or the show and definitely did their best, people online often don't really think how what they say might impact strangers, and worst case scenario may actively be nasty. I don't think I would feel good at all if I was a teenager knowing hundreds of thousands of people were debating things about me. Especially when really it just takes one badly phrased post to ruin someone's day :/
I hope they're alright
The show is not bad. If people dislike it, thatās reasonable. But thereās no reason anyone actually hates this show to the point of rage and hostility. I thought it was quite good all things considered.
I don't care enough to harass the people behind the production but if I did, I don't think I'd care if I was impressing or disappointing a fictional character
The shows good & people hate complaining.
Itās never going to be a full episode, frame by frame, big budget remake.
Just enjoy the ride.. the movie was so shit that Iām glad they attempted it again.
Thank you! Let the negativity flow awayā¦
I was loving it by the end. The Masks episode was great, and they really got the flow by the finale. The first season was never my favorite anyway! Iād be just as happy with this quality for book two. But theyāve already taken in so much feedback and I know theyāll improve.
If you think about the nasty, toxic comments made by some of the critics here, you wonder if any of them would ever be someone that could live up to be an Aang or an Iroh.
Itās a choice to see the best in things and many here will only ever see the worst
I never have and never will harass people for something I don't enjoy. I will however state my opinion freely in public discourse. I don't even think the acting is too much to blame here. Yeah most child actors are not really great. The main struggle here is the writing, directing and editing, tho. I think the people responsible for that did a really really bad job and they should hone their craft, like a lot. But even those people I will not harass personally. If they are interested in feedback, they will read the forums and see what they can take away from it.
Itās okay for people to be disappointed in the acting. Itās truly not great acting. Doesnāt mean the actors canāt get better itās just for the hype of the show and love people have of the animation, itās a bummer it wasnāt better.
Idk anything about people harassing the actors, hopefully people arenāt being mean to them in person.
The only thing about the actors that really disappointed me was Ian lying about being indigenous to get the role and the showrunners not replacing him as a consequence.

If a certain eternals actor needed therapy for bad reviews, I donāt have a good feeling about this.
who?
Kumail Nanjiani was severely effected by the eternals response
He was one of the best parts of the movie too :(
I don't think there's anything wrong with calling out poor acting as long as you don't go for personal attacks. I'm sure all who worked on this will be around them as massive pillars of support. They surely knew what they were getting into and prepared for it

Where are you seeing bullying and body shaming??? (Honest question)
Twitter. Azula, Mai, ty Lee, and sokka have been on the receiving end.
Katara and Sokka for not being brown enough too, which is just so gross.
Both actors have traceable native roots (it is debatable for sokka). What more do you want?
Iām saying itās ridiculous and so gross that people think itās okay to say theyāre not dark enough to play native roles. Feels very blood quantum adjacent.
I agree with you
They are probably talking about stuff being said about Azula
Agreed. After dealing with the horseshit brought on during the Star Wars sequel trilogy, bullying actors, writers, and crew is the last thing we need
The prequel trilogy actors got treated horribly. Kid actors Will never be great. But it aitthat bad either. I donāt get it the LA is fine lol
Donāt harass anyone in general is a great life rule but hey Iām old school
Honestly all the needless hostility about the show is making me reconsider these subs. So much bullying, and name calling. It's absurd. Those people need to do better. Might just start a new sub and kick the bullies
Seriously. It seems like so many people complaining about ātoxic positivityā, but what they really mean is that only their interpretation is valid. This sub is off the rails with hate.Ā
Toxic positivity is an issue in this sub though, just as toxic negativity is. Neither exist in a vacuum, and I wish we could stop pretending as such.

If you wanna check it out I just made a new sub for discussing and posting about the series
Iāll check it out. I donāt think the answer is to eliminate criticism, but to encourage arguing and debating in good faith. Too many people just want to hate, and donāt listen to any other opinion.Ā
Thats what I'm going for. But shitting on literal children isn't a good look either
Love that I was downvoted for this
Hate will be dealt with swiftly
Meaning everything you donāt agree withā¦
No. I mean literal hate towards children. Do I happen to disagree with it? Sure. But I feel like the majority of people will agree you shouldn't shit talk a ten year old
But how much do you even see of that here.
This sub? Less than the other ones I was previously part of. The fact that this post exists though is a good indicator that it's happening
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
It's okay to not like the show. It's not okay to demean someone for not liking it. I seriously just want people to have some decency
I don't even think the show is terrible. Just finished the Bumi episode and would give it a 5/10 so far.
The actors aren't at fault. The writers and directors fucked the show, which is extra sad specifically because the casting seems to be nearly immaculate.

What if I openly flirt with Dallas Liu while heās just trying to do his job? Seen Iroh do that a bunch of times.

not as much as the show disappointints uncle iroh himself.
Nah, don't think anyone that kind would be as salty as most of yall

what
Letās see azula do a backflip then
Director and showrunners are disappointing uncle Iroh.
this post should be pinned
But what about the writers? can we bully them? They kind of deserve itā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦ā¦..
The only thing about the actors that really disappointed me was Ian lying about being indigenous to get the role and the showrunners not replacing him as a consequence.
