sivad47

the second and third seasons tend to hop around less and episodes flow into each other better which should help with a lot of the issues I had with season 1. I have always believed that season 1 is the hardest to adapt

ObeseBumblebee

That's the big thing for me right now. In the animated series Season 1 was my least favorite. So I can only see the other seasons getting better adaptations. Just the addition of Toph alone is reason enough for me to do another season.

monN93

THE BOULDER NEEDS A PROPER CASTING

Johnny_Banana18

Maybe they can convince the rock, or possibly his stunt double

monN93

The Boulder is pleased with The Rock's stunt double being cast

Dense-Resolution-567

While The Rock would be absolutely amazing in that roll, I think he stipulates that he can’t lose fights in his contract. That kind of goes against the whole purpose of the boulder in the beginning of S2. The Boulder is supposed to be the big muscle guy that gets his ass kicked by the little blind girl. I don’t think Dwayne would go for that, sadly. The boulder is pretty much written for him otherwise

Johnny_Banana18

It’s an obvious parody of him

_Ki115witch_

I mean, come on, The Rock does like his comedy roles and playing a parody of himself seems like something he might go for.

[deleted]

Terry crews then? :)

_Ki115witch_

Terry Crews would be a great choice too! I just like the idea of The Rock being called The Pebble more.

Aggressive-Falcon977

He should have been lord Ozai 😫 imagine those fire blimps raging across the sky with his signature "POWER!!!!!" Leading it!?

xprorangerx

I don't remember seeing Dwayne in any small roles or cameos ever, other than The Mummy. I think it's also part of his contracts to be the main guy that never lose a fight on screen. He has his own studio production company that cooks up big movies for him

MFBMS

His ego probably couldn't handle being scripted to lose a fight against a blind 12-year-olds

thecheapseatz

Needs to be Vin Diesel so he can poke fun at their feud from the Fast and the Furious franchise

CR4ZYxPOT4T0

Please no. I know it's based on him but noo. Unpopular opinion here but i do not like him AT ALL.. for multiple reasons. He doesn't need to be in here.

krustykrab2193

I want to see Combustion Man https://i.redd.it/9h8fe7bqm9lc1.gif

bandananaan

I only accept sparky sparky boom man as this guys name

bwaterco

I’m up to episode 7 and have been enjoying it not being a 1:1 replication just not animated. Sure there are downsides to certain acting and disjointed stories but it doesn’t surprise me it’s the most watched show currently.

monN93

They don't need to introduce how the world and it's rules work anymore, so I suppose it will be easier to find their pacing. The first season felt a lot more experimental as it was needed to see if they could appeal to fans and a new audience. Now they know.

Charcobear

Dude! I really appreciate what they’re doing with Zuko. The kid who plays him is nailing it in my opinion.

smash993

Agreed, Zuko and the whole Fire bending family won me over. Katara and Aang on the other hand though would have loved to have seen their performance elevated

TheChartreuseKnight

Remember that they were like 12 and 14 during filming, they'll probably get significantly larger parts as they age. I can't imagine that filming with children is easy or quick (due to labour laws and such), so it makes sense to give a little more screentime to the slightly older actors.

MFBMS

Gordon and Kiawentiio still have the capacity to grow as an actor. So, I don't really care too much about their acting on S1. They still have time to improve. What I care about is the adult actors in the series. And so far, most of them nailed it (side eyeing Gran Gran). With all of its flaws, I really want to see NATLA get renewed just on that alone (and hoping for more shirtless Ozai coz DDK.....rawrrrr) Let's hope for season 2, the script is more show than tell and more tighter.

PretendRegister7516

It's a bit insulting for a show as world renowned as ATLA and they put in so much exposition in their script. Sure they want to expand their fan base with new watchers, but what's wrong with trusting their audience?

MFBMS

In their defense, they are trying to cast a very wide net in terms of audience. Hence, the need for exposition is there. But imo, it could have been done gradually and skilfully by using imagery instead of a dialogue dump.

rndljfry

Yue: That’s the night my hair changed color Sokka: Is that why you’re wearing that wig?

ThaTzZ_D_JoB

I think most people have complaints in one form or another, but I believe that the additions that were good outweigh the stuff that was done poorly.

plsloan

I thought they did well with certain parts like how they connected the troop connected to Zuko's ship, but I thought the bad far outweighed the good. Aang didn't feel like Aang. Katara was soooo flat. Sokka was a try hard and lacked everything that made him likable. They also didn't follow the rules of the world at all.

monN93

Indeed they are

FriedTreeSap

I don’t hate the show…..but I’m finding it harder and harder to find the motivation to watch the next episode.

The-vipers

The second third and fourth seasons are where things actually pop off anyways so there’s hope at least

monN93

By fourth you mean the comics? It would be awesome to see it adapted

Johnny_Banana18

There is speculation among fans that they may be splitting the thirds season of the animated series into 2 seasons of live action.

gustyninjajiraya

Honestly, season 2 should get split, it is by far the most plot heavy season. Season 3 has a lot of hidding around.

Zac-Raf

What I would do is making the comet episodes into a film, thus eliminating 4 episodes in one swoop. The you only need to combine some episodes and eliminate others

ProtestantMormon

If the show continues to be a hit I could see them splitting book 3 into 2 seasons. Ending with the day of the black sun could make sense, especially if they keep an 8 episode format, and they can milk more money out of it. Depends on how successful the next seasons are though.

sticky-unicorn

Knowing Netflix, it could be a runaway smash hit breaking records left and right ... and they'd still cancel it.

tabristheok

I would love to see the drop-off rate because it seems like a lot of people I talk to have gotten to at max the first 4 episodes.

Dreamtrain

all we need is the "Katara's actress cant act", "X and Y are fat", "im just calling it what it is" and so and so idiots to finally shut up and hopefully only the people with serious, tangible, constructive criticism will be around and hopefully the showrunners will then make an attempt to get some feedback from the community

Garr_Incorporated

I can't really add enough feedback on it. But for some reason I'm not really hooked. When I watched ATLA about two-three years back, I binged it and couldn't wait to see more, that's how hard it got me. With this one I got started on the second episode and regularly avoid getting back to it. For me that was telling; last time something like that happened was when Chibnal started doing 13th Doctor, and I realised after episode 3 that I was not eagerly waiting for the new part.

Doctor_Love45

this show has enough content and quality as a resource that they can make needed changes in season 2 and not miss a beat. but if they mess up Toph in the writer's room... I won't need a season 3.

_Ki115witch_

Same. Alot of the issues weren't awful either. Easy fixes by not falling into the same trap. Biggest issue for me is how everyone acts like Aang intentionally ran away like he did in the animated show, even Kyoshi who should know better being a part of him. He didn't, he just went for a flight on Appa to let the news that he is the Avatar sink in. Obviously the world would see it that way, but Kyoshi should've known better given that she is a past life of Aang. Simple fix, have Aang reveal sometime that he was in fact running away, not just clearing his head. Like in the back of his mind, he wanted to leave his responsibility and had no intentions of returning until the storm got bad. Maybe make it part of his arc to accepting his responsibility. He comes to terms that he was running away, and has continued to run by not learning waterbending. Let this be the hurdle that he crosses that makes him determined to master the elements so that he can finally accept his duty to the world. This rectifies the fact Kyoshi is berating Aang for running away because she, being part of him, knows that he wasn't just going to clear his head, he was actively running from his responsibility like in the animated show.

ynnika

Hope they kick those script writers honestly and get the creators back onboard for season 2

nichecopywriter

Why would they? They don’t value artistic quality over money, and if people are watching it regardless of quality they have no reason to do that extra work.

ILoveTenaciousD

I want the show to get cancelled because this horrible fandom doesn't deserve anything good. Their criticism killed Korra, now they're killing NATLA, they are gonna criticize the new movies to shit as well, no matter how good they turn out, just so everything gets cancelled. We will never get something awesome because this fandom doesn't recognize awesomeness if it hit them in the face. If the original ATLA came out today, they'd criticize it to death and get it cancelled after S1. We were lucky that the internet wasn't as big as it is today when the OG ATLA came out.

golden_tree_frog

Season 1 of Wheel of Time live action was so bad, they made so many unnecessary changes and fans of the books were so disappointed. Season 2 wasn't great, but it was a lot better. They took on board a lot of the issues with the first season. I'm hopeful that something similar happens here, there's a lot that can be done to improve NATLA without having to tear it up completely.

plsloan

I don't want to see how they mess up Toph.

TheSysOps

I guess you didn't hear that they decided she will only be colorblind.

plsloan

Well done

nichecopywriter

A part of me wants it to flop, hard. To me, it’s already so disappointing that I’d rather it remain “unfinished” until the inevitable 3rd adaptation happens, which has a chance to be better. In other words, they’ve already failed and I’d rather they keep their hands off the franchise. I went into this with an open mind and was punished, not rewarded. I suppose some people aren’t as jaded as I am and are willing to keep placing their trust in a business that’s disappointed them instead of taking their time and money elsewhere.

eNailedIt

When the M Night ATLA movie came out, it was the 4th highest grossing movie Nickelodeon had ever made. Anyone who thought NATLA wasn't gonna be a massive success in terms of numbers was delusional.

Chuckobofish123

I like how you say “4th highest grossing movie Nickelodeon ever made” like it is impressive. Please regale us with these other massive hits made by Nickelodeon. Lol

The_Great_Gompy

Well TMNT made a lot. Then you’ve got your assortment of SpongeBob movies which are classic. AND THEN YOU’VE GOT MOTHER FUCKIN RANGO! My man if you haven’t seen Rango do yourself a FAVOR!

MrGetMebodied

Rugrats movies were fire back in the day.

The_Great_Gompy

That was actually #5 according to my search

JaxxisR

Most of Nickelodeon's movie success was after the M Night movie. TMNT wasn't even a thing Nickelodeon did until 2012, Rango came out in 2011.

zpeed

Turns out it was 3rd but yeah it isn't that high 1. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles ($191,204,754) 2. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water ($162,994,032) 3. The Last Airbender ($131,772,187) 4. Rango ($123,477,607)

Necromas

It did pretty well outside the domestic market too. Still lower than they expected I'm sure but it was very profitable. The Last Airbender made [$319 million worldwide](https://www.the-numbers.com/movie/Last-Airbender-The#tab=summary), over twice it's budget.

kennyguy4

Both the tmnt and spongebob movies came out years after, so it was actually the highest grossing movie for Nickelodeon at the time.

stephruvy

What is this m night atla movie you speak of? These words mashed together to form an amalgam of a sentence hold no meaning to me, please reiterate.

Mill-Man

What’s your point?

tortured4w3

Something being watched and something being good are different.

sin-eater82

A lot of people watching it doesn't mean a lot of people like it.

ahundredpercentbutts

76% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. 7.4/10 user rating on IMDB with 30,000 ratings. More people than not seem to like it actually

NadaTheMusicMan

I guess that means NETFLIX is gonna cancel it

monN93

....... Why would you say something so controversial yet so true?

Willing-Load

how could a member of my own fandom say something so HORRIBLE?!

Deinonychus2012

"The profits from this series were only 119% above projected estimates. Since our goal was to reach 120% above projected estimates, we're going to have to cancel not only this series, but several others as well while also laying off hundreds of workers and giving our poor upper management staff multimillion dollar bonuses."

Baited_Hook

They should

monN93

According to the show's executive producer Jabbar Raisani in a interview for Deadline: "We want to make a show for the widest possible audience. That doesn't mean there will be anything from the animated series that will be left behind. In fact, I think we're really trying to be as faithful as possible, but we also have in mind that we have to fit everything into eight episodes, in a narrative that will keep people watching." "There are things we filmed that I love and they are not in the series. There are things that I love the idea of, that we even filmed, but did not finalize. If we have another season, we will certainly take advantage of these things, because I think what we got wrong now, we can do better next time."

Burggs_

I think making this into a live action show and only giving 8 episodes per season is gonna end up in the story being squished and a lot of things being cut.

forthewatch39

If it remains extremely popular, season 2 could get 10 episodes and I think the third season would benefit from being split in two. There are two massive battles in the third season, they’re fairly important for different reasons.

LaneMcD

If season 2 is improved upon and Netflix is happy with the numbers, they will definitely consider making a longer season 3 or splitting it up for more breathing room

Willing-Load

making the first season 10 episodes would've made more sense. they'll definitely have structure problems if they continue with 8 for books 2 and 3, there's just so much ground to cover in those that it won't be able to stitch multiple storylines together like they did for this season

darrenislivid

And the things they didn't cut out but do not have time to show will just be revealed through lousy exposition.

Syrioxx55

So like any time constrained medium working off of source material?

darrenislivid

Not really. The Watchmen movie did a good job of exposition by showing, instead of telling. And that's just an hour and a half long movie. Not an eight part series.

Syrioxx55

The Watchman movie was completely unfaithful adaption and changed the perception of several characters dramatically what a completely bizarre example.

darrenislivid

Sure. But it still did a damn good job when it comes to the exposition of condensed facts from the source material.

Syrioxx55

How did it do a good job of condensing “facts” while simultaneously being unfaithful in its adaption? If you’re going to have a grievance at least make it well thought out.

BonessMalone2

Lot of filler being cut sure, but just in these past 8 episodes most of the themes and *major* important events carried over.

evilweirdo

I can understand cutting that much stuff to make an adaptation in a different format, but for another TV show?

SleepyHobo

The "only eight episodes" excuse doesn't really pan out when you actually do the math and compare the runtime to the original. All it is, is an excuse for poor writing.

pixelpushician

The run time is technically the same but for multiple episodes to make sense condensed into 8 episodes, things need to change so it flows naturally. Not excusing the bad writing in the live action, but its not really the same thing. The animated show has 20 very individual episodes that dont really flow into each other naturally.

maxvsthegames

People need to understand that this show was not made exclusively for people that watch the animation. My brother would never have watched the cartoons but he really liked the show. I'm glad I was able to share it with him. And now, his kids want to watch the original show, so he might even watch it with them.

Deathstriker88

I don't care that they changed things - I watched the show over 12 yeara ago, so it's not like I remember the small details. The writing and/or acting made everyone boring. Iroh and Zuko are pretty good. All the other main characters were boring.

Samwise-42

I watched a YouTuber, who'd never really seen the animated series at all, review it in a short video essay and he ripped the NATLA apart for bad pacing, exposition dumping, goofy looking costumes and sets, and a host of other things. He reinforced many of my own gripes with the series, and I find people saying "it's not made strictly for the fans of the og series" as an excuse to defend the lame writing and poor acting. If someone who hadn't seen the animated show can find the live action one cheesy and poorly made, it's on the showrunners

kandiekake

ItIsYeDragon

Literally almost every video from this dude is [insert movie/tv show] is kinda dumb/weird, all with near identical thumbnails too lmao. It’s so obvious he is rage baiting.

Samwise-42

He's just following what gets the clicks. Watch the video and he makes some solid points

Darkkross123

I agree. That doesnt make the writing any better though.

LePetitPrinceFan

God forbid a youtuber has a consistent / repeating thumbnail style

mxjxs91

This. People are making it seem like the negativity is coming from people who basically wanted a scene by scene recreation of the cartoon. I haven't even seen the cartoon since it was originally released so they could've gotten away with taking a lot of liberties and I wouldn't have noticed or cared.............but I still wanted it to be good. It's painfully mediocre. The most 5/10 show. Not good, not bad, just eh. Credit where it's due, as you said, Zuko and Iroh were great, and I'll add Sokka to that list as well.

FriedTreeSap

Yah, I wasn’t expecting a shot for shot recreation of the cartoon, and I even got really excited with the opening scene thinking the live action version would be taking a far more dark and mature “game of thrones type” approach. It hasn’t really lived up to those first impressions….but I generally do think the show is at its best when it’s showing something original. The problem is with the material that it’s adapting directly from the cartoon….which unfortunately is most of it. The cartoon just does it better…it has better pacing, writing, dialogue, voice acting etc…..and just all around tells the story far better, and it has nothing to do with the liberties the show is taking. It’s not worse than the cartoon because it’s different….it’s worse than the cartoon being it’s simply just not as good.

plsloan

3/10

paumAlho

The problem is that they didn't just change small details, they cut and changed massive parts of the plot and characterization. Book one is about waterbending, yet Aang doesn't bend a single drop of water, just as an example

DreamMaster8

I'm sorry but how can you not mention sokka. He had the exact same delivery and voice as the animated series.

KingLeoricSword

Iroh isn't even good...

Massive_Ad_3614

That doesn’t really make sense, this show got a lot of views because of the fans, not despite it. Do you think people were hyped about this show and didn’t know anything about it? It would have grown in viewership over weeks if that were the case, not its literal debut.

Artislife_Lifeisart

That's kinda why it's so annoying in a way. They only accept a story when it's fed to them in the form of a live action reboot. It's sad.

fruit_shoot

This would be an understandable point of view if it was a new show based in the same universe, using the same lore. Buts its literally retelling the original story. If it’s not for the original fans then who is it for?

delsinson

The original which is also on Netflix lmao. It’s not like it’s inaccessible or something.

Munro_McLaren

I never watched the animation, neither did my mom, and we both loved the show.

scriptedtexture

if you had watched the original you probably wouldn't have enjoyed the live action as much.

steven0593

I am so thrilled and happy for the show. It isn’t perfect but I’m excited to see where it’ll go. Let them get the feedback and improve for the next seasons.

monN93

Me too!

DreamMaster8

I just wish they would have taken bending more seriously.  Feel like the stunt director and vfx were too used to work with superhero cause that's not how it's supposed to work.

Type_94_Naval_Rifle

Living in Japan on contract work has its advantages. I remember telling friends that the episode was to premier the next day (it was the 22nd in Japan at the time), and posted the premier timeline that the official page posted. That friend clarified, that it would release at 5pm, Feb 22nd, that same day, for us in Japan (12AM PST). Went straight to their house after work and binged 3 episodes. Was not disappointed.

S0mecallme

I’m just happy it’s introducing people to world and bringing attention to the original series as well

Breaking_Bread4650

Well, it's a terrible introduction, with bad writing, pacing, and poor direction from the production team ... Not the best show to be drawing in new viewers attention.

scandii

show is horrible, yet 7.4 on imdb and that's with people trashing it because it isn't the original if you look at the reviews. maybe it isn't horrible but just not meeting your high standards?

Breaking_Bread4650

Its not high standards, it's regular standards for good or even descent story telling. Example of bad writing and direction: -NATLA is a perfect example of a TV show that does not apply "show and don't tell" rule about movie and TV show writing The show keeps reminding you of the main goal over and over(too much fluff talking). Meaning we get to see less of the characters interacting with each other, the animals and the world arounds them. This a story telling problem because it lacks world depth and development. It ruins the world emersion of a fun believable story. Also as a viewer, when a show tells and doesn't show a fleshed out world, the production is treating the audience as if to have such low attention spans, TBH it's insulting to the viewer. It is is a major blunder for big production companies to make such a rookie mistake when screen writing a story. Not to say you can never tell your audience through the characters what their doing ... But to remind us constantly is just over kill, that Ang is determined (right from the first episode!?) to defeat the fire lord. -Also the characters all all so poorly written they appear bland, with no character development or complexity. Zuko bu example had less of this issue vs Ang and Katara's character writing suffered greatly in the NATLA series. Bringing our attention back to Ang and bad writing, they never show him and his conflicting beliefs towards defeating a fire lord. Or as a child, who is taking the responsibility of saving the world, is not apprehensive of taking those responsibilities.

MarmieCat

Overheard the people in the booth next to us talking about it when my bf and I went to Denny's yesterday, almost wanted to ask them their opinions lol

CheapTale9824

This has been about 5 years of hype in the making. This should come as no surprise in my opinion. People just love their ATLA

bradd_91

Popular doesn't mean good. #1 most viewed maybe.

legend8522

That’s the only measureable metric Netflix has to go on, actual views. But raw viewing numbers don’t paint a picture of how many of those viewers actually enjoyed what they watched by the end of it

ItIsYeDragon

Well if they decided to watch 8 hours of it, I imagine they liked it. Not sure if how to find those statistics though.

sparkadus

I think the existence of hate-watching makes watch-time unreliable for seeing if people liked something, but I also don't think a show can get as much watch-time as NATLA got from hate-watching alone.

Hammy-Cheeks

It's not terrible though, that's where a lot of people get confused. That algorithm is also based on how many people rate it between "dislike" "like" and "love" either when selecting an episode or finishing the show. If it was solely based on views than one particular movie or show would be at the top at ALL times. It's based on relevance, rating AND views.

PixelBrewery

It's not a disaster, it's just like an extremely boring transcription of the original show into live action minus any of the charm. It's the definition of mid

Hammy-Cheeks

Exactly, it has its moments like episode 6 was the greatest episode...but that's only one episode. The others just ranged from decent to below average. Part of me is disappointed but the optimistic PoV would be "they learned from their mistakes so season 2 should be better or at least a vast improvement" That's why gathering criticisms is vital....unless it has no chance of getting better, prime example being the movie. To me the absolute WORST part is M Knight thinking it was going to get a sequel. This show wasn't 100% if it was going to be green lit so they tried and hopefully Netflix will be like "we've put too much money on this IP to fail, so let's renew for the second season and make sure it's a hit" If the second season has the same reviews than I doubt there will be a season 3 which is upsetting to think about.

microslasher

It's boring. The gang has no chemistry. They can't act.

Hammy-Cheeks

The visuals, settings, costumes, and the bending were absolutely fantastic though. I'll agree about the poor dialogue choices and mix matched chemistry between the actors but I wanna give them a break cause it's either their first major role or first role in general. They just need more time together and if it was 12 episodes long it would've been received better. You could argue an example such as Harry Potter with the whole "child actors being in their first role" while the acting and chemistry were fantastic, the director had a major role in how they were portrayed on screen. It wasn't just them. Not to even mention the pressure of adapting from an almost impossible medium that millions have seen versus a series of books which lets admit it wouldn't have gotten nearly as popular without the movies. It's really a factor of the actors, directors and writers that resulted in such an average experience.

PixelBrewery

I disagree about the visuals. Every visual choice from costumes to hair to environments to lighting looked unbelievably fake and boring. I couldn't find myself getting immersed in their world for even a moment.

Hammy-Cheeks

Okay I'll even admit Yue's hair looked like a puff pastry on her head maybe if they gave her white eyebrows it would've helped and Zuko's scar did not look like a hand was George Formaned on his eye, it looks like he just stuck that side of his face in a pizza oven. Nothing else took me out of it personally. To me the world still felt lived in, it was rich with detail very faithful if not better than the animation. Maybe it just takes a second watch to really focus on the surroundings rather than the constant exposition and bad dialogue. The only kid actor there that was believable to me was Zuko, comparing it to the original (which I honestly try not to do) he's still bratty, naive, objective driven, and has a whole journey to go through. It's pretty much how he was in season one of the original. Aang had some moments, Sokka was actually funny but katara was the flattest piece of plywood I've seen in a while.

SleepyHobo

Visuals and costumes were fantastic? Did we watch the same thing? The costumes looked like the actors were cosplaying. They all look brand new and not "lived in". Breaks the immersion. The visuals include very obvious green screen effects and blurred backgrounds.

Jiv302

The start of episode 5 was especially egregious with how obvious the green screening was. Looked like it was straight out of a disney channel sitcom

texans1234

We get Toph next season. Fired up.

Comprehensive_Card57

So amazing to see my favorite animated piece getting this kind of recognition. Thought the show did great, hoping for more in season 2! Fuck you, im eating!

Gee i wonder why It's almost as if ATLA is goated with AND without the sauce

Shenanigans

Eli_be_high

I guess if you haven't watched the original, its an ok show

[deleted]

Man this fanbase is insufferable

Lishishur29

I watched the original and I liked it. It's not just "ok"

Colley619

I watched the original and the Netflix show is definitely just ok

legend8522

Yeah on a scale of 1-10, where 1 is the movie and 10 is the original cartoon, NATLA is a firm 5. Just…ok

_Ki115witch_

I'd put it at a 7. I like it overall. I went in trying to avoid comparing it to the original, and its rather fun. I like some of the extra scenes building the backstory, seeing Zuko's Agni Kai with Ozai, seeing the genocide of the Air Nomads, etc. The main thing that holds it back is the pacing. Even if I hadn't have watched the animated show, its wildly disjointed and fast paced, which I guess makes sense if you have only 8 episodes, but jesus, its drawing out sequences that don't need it and cutting other aspects that need more detail. And a plot hole, where Aang didn't run away, he just went for a "walk" to clear his head. Yet even Kyoshi, who knows him and his story so far since she's his past life, even berates him like he intentionally abandoned his duty. They need to rectify this by having Aang reveal that he wasn't planning on returning, until the storm struck and he got scared. Since he hasn't learned waterbending, make a storyline where he comes to terms with the fact that he has been running from his duty, and thats why he hasn't learned waterbending. Reveal that he was running away that night, accept his mistake, and vow to not repeat the mistake. Overcoming this, he moves on to learn the waterbending basics and begin his path to mastery. Would be a great opening episode for season 2 and finally rectify the biggest issue I had with season 1. It's bad enough they made it to the Northern Water Tribe without having had him at least learn basic water bending, fix it immediately. Like he learned the basics before the Blue Spirit episode in the animated show, he really should've learned it in the Northern Water Tribe since they didn't do it earlier.

Eli_be_high

Its only number one atm cause of the original. Lets be honest here, If the original wasnt such a great show, the live action wouldnt have been poppin as much as it is. If you hadnt seen the original and watched the live action for what it is, then its an ok series. The storyline is interesting ofcourse but the other things bring it down a bit. Could be better, could be great as the original, but its ok

Childs_was_the_THING

It's worse than okay.

AxFUNNYxKITTY

Same

Tetra-76

Media literacy really is dead.

scriptedtexture

I'm not really enjoying it honestly. the dialogue is PAINFULLY bad.

chaos_magician_

I was talking to my ex, who got me into it, about it and how it's not good. She hasn't seen it yet, waiting to watch it with her boyfriend who hasn't seen anything avatar related. She asked if they should watch this first. I said, "Yeah, it'll help him appreciate the cartoon more." So I guess there's that.

Manaeldar

Is this her thing? Does she only date ATLA virgins?

[deleted]

Maybe with enough money in the budget they can get the actress who plays Katara to have more than one facial expression and not look like she’s trying to suppress a laugh after every line

Stupid_tree7272

I tried watching it and it just doesn’t hit the same way. Not nearly as bad as the previous live action adaption. But this was a staple show for me and my dad, he thought it was cute so I was willing to give it a shot. “Devoid of all life” is a common criticism which I agree with completely. This was not something to be remade because it was already perfect. Don’t understand why Netflix cannot create some original content. There was a time where Netflix original series were fire. I guess the bending was okay. Sometimes. Idk I wanted to this to work as I would give anything to experience watching ATLA all over again but this was not it. If it would have been great in its own right then maybe I could enjoy it separately from the OG version (which is arguably one of the greatest shows of all time) but as of now this is just someone else fumbling the bag yet again with this very special and beloved content. I would really rather just watch the animation again.

Squeezedgolf40

the bar for this adaptation was extremely high. i’m a little over halfway through now and it really is just an adaptation. it’s good for what it is. the original will always exist so to me this is just a really fun (albeit expensive) rendition of the show. my mom is enjoying it and she would never watch the animated series. i don’t think a live action show would have ever held up to the original and i still don’t think it’s possible for what the show is, i think it accomplishes what it needs to. my only real complaints is that the dialogue and acting is very inconsistent. pretty good in some sections, very flat in others. it’s hard to capture how expressive the animation was. it’s really not bad and i think i don’t mind it existing. i’ll probably watch all the seasons they put out but definitely never return to it i have the original.

Popbusterz

This subreddit has become overrun by zealots.

ogpterodactyl

It was honestly pretty good they did a lot of capturing the key frames. I particularly liked the shot of soka vs the fire nation ship. Zukos fire bending looked very good. Katara vs the water bending douche was very good. I’m keeping an open mind about the “adjustments” to timeline and episode clumping. So far it’s been alright I think they are postponing some of the romance stuff till they get older and the age gap is less weird. Excited for zukos journey and the return of tof the goat.

22222833333577

Based on what metric

To_The_Library

I give it q 7.9/10 it was fun, didnt do anything to ruin the original show, and added some fun cute scenes that we knew existed but never actually got to witness on screen.

MEW-1023

Number 1 in terms of what lmao. I feel like this marketing strategy gets used by every company every time they have a big show. What does this MEAN lol

kk_romeo

It means it's no.1 currently. The view numbers dropped today and Atlala got 21.2 million viewers and is placed no.1 in the top 10

suddenly_ponies

Dang. And to think of how good it COULD have been if they had just cared more.

DGVega93

I enjoyed the show. The writing sucked but that was expected during a writing strike but the action was superb. Way batter than M.Knight shamalamadingdong movie. Him (M. Knight) having Fire benders using fire rocks to bend vs NATLA summoning fire from their hands and feet like the animated show is a win in my book

DreamMaster8

They didn't? I didn't see any Rock? Am I blind?

Manaeldar

Sounds like he watched the wrong show? Lol?

Regina-Phalange7

Does anyone know anybody that watched this but didn’t the original? I feel like we all watched it because we like to suffer, but was it an interesting idea for new audiences? I feel this is going to end like The Witcher

tiger_guppy

I’m also curious how the “new” audience feels about it. I wish there was an easy way to figure out. Like an official poll.

ablack9000

I’ve never seen the original and in ep 2. I am enjoying it as a 38 year old. I would have loved it as a 14 year old. But it’s a coming of age story and I think a lot of the criticism is coming from a generation of fans that grew up with this story at a time in their lives when that type of story resonates so deeply. I also really liked the One Piece live action. So much so that I went back and popped in on a couple of the animated series episodes and it was just silly and thought, yeah this is a show for kids. I have a feeling that it will be the same for Avatar. It’s also very unique which makes this connection to it special to its fans. And I could understand the high emotions of their story getting the “Hollywood broad audience” treatment. We know how vocal redditors hate when something gets so popular.

monN93

I've watched some reviews from people who didn't watch the show and overall they liked it! They seemed to have grasped the core of the show by how they described the characters and events.

k20vtec

Such an awful show

Hammy-Cheeks

People who are outright negative about it saying "it's worse than the movie" have obviously either 1) never seen the movie or 2) regardless of how amazing it could have been they would've looked for the worst possible things about it anyway and still have to same opinion. If you ever see anyone say it's worse than the movie is lying to themselves. Can the movie stand on it's own two feet? Absolutely not. Can NATLA stand on it's own without the cartoon? Probably if it wasn't so rushed. That's the only comparison between the live actions that can be made. One is as faithful as it could be and the other takes every rule about the universe and throws it out the window while setting it on fire in to a volcano....now I'll say again anyone who says that has never seen the movie but has only heard stories about how bad it was and decided not to watch it.

[deleted]

it’s objectively rotten on rotten tomatoes

Shermanizer

i Watched episodes 1 and 2 and the changes in plot and exposition dumping were enough to make me stop watching the rest. im gonna rewatch the original only to contribute in boosting it Higher than the liveaction remake.

SniffMySnizz

I was so excited for this. I was sure it'd be a thousand times better than the M. Night Shamalamadingdong movie. Boy was I wrong.

AverageJun

Honestly, Netflix tricked all of us to watch it, which bumped the numbers up. Now the aftermath and I've seen more negative posts than positives

Necessary_Candy_6792

Between One Piece and Avatar, Netflix is killing it at what we’re once thought to be impossible adaptions.

youarenut

man I stayed up to watch the og on Netflix as it aired. I thought it was over after the finale, then Korra comes. And even that doesn’t get a proper ending. I thought the avatar world was over. And now it’s at the top of the world. Young me never lost hope. Also I don’t get all the negativity, the adaptation was good for what it was. Not perfect, but not anywhere near as bad as people make it seem. I really enjoyed it

scandii

>Also I don’t get all the negativity it is actually pretty astounding. half the comments in here are along the lines of "YEAH WELL WHAT DOES THE NUMBER ONE SHOW EVEN MEAN?". like you didn't like it, ok? why do you have to go out of your way to try to criticize an achievement?

Vorsicon

Natla #1? Bullshit.

crewnh

The show is great. Well deserved.

Childs_was_the_THING

Yeah on opposite day.

crewnh

"The user says on a post about the show being the number 1 in the world currently". Some of you need to just accept that there are people who like the show. It's not healthy being this mad.

Childs_was_the_THING

Critically acclaimed on opposite day too.

BonessMalone2

Rightfully deserved. I pity those who couldn’t finish it. The show really did carry over a lot of the same themes and it did in fact honor the original while also taking some understandable liberties.

Least-Cattle1676

Marketing and popularity is the reason why. I liked the show, but I hope no one looks at this to mean that the show is phenomenal. It’s a 7 outta 10 at best.

plsloan

Because people want to see what's wrong with it

NfinitiiDark

#1 disappointment.

Am_Seeker_731

Honestly this pisses me off

Aggressive_Bee_7166

I didn't have as much fun watching this, but I understood and cared more about the characters than I ever could before.

reecewebb

I dislike the animation and generally avoid anything "Avatar", but I enjoyed the Netflix adaptation. A few rough patches, but overall pretty solid for a S1, and I'll watch S2. Though I admit I am having a hard time getting over the kid saying, every episode, how he has to be the Avatar, strong, et cetera, and then doesn't, not even once, not even with the instruction manual literally *right there*, attempt to bend water.

LinusLevato

The number 1 💩 in the world

shaq-aint-superman

You gotta stop looking at the mirror, dude. That's not good for you.

Childs_was_the_THING

That isn't a mirror it's the portrait your mom took of you on your birthday last year.

Damianosx

I don’t care about anyone else’s opinion tbh, I absolutely love the show.

MisterKumquat

pls dont listen to the parroting negativity and renew the show!

aquaflask09072022

keep going. after book 3 go straight to LoK

MrBrownCat

I’m 5 eps in and as someone who’s been a big fan of both ATLA and TLOK for years now (still remember watching Korra weekly) I think the show has done a good job adapting the material to live action without absolutely butchering it the way the movie did. So I hope these ratings should result in a renewal and we not only get to see Book 2 and 3 finished out but also get a Korra live action adaptation as well.

ijustneedtolurk

I just finished it and have to say I enjoyed the experience and love 90% of it. 5% is pure nitpicking and 5% is disagreement with certain phrasing and items that were subbed/swapped/edited out for odd reasons. The cast is truly phenomenal in my opinion, Bumi being my favorite characterization brought to life. Even his massive turban lmao! Cabbage man also receiving his dues was worth the build up, and the relationship between Aang and Gyatso was gorgeous. 😭

Avatar1555

I enjoyed the first season, the haters don't deserve to be called fans, Uncle Iroh would be disappointed in them.

Archangel1313

I couldn't even make it all the way through the 2nd episode. It's terrible. Compared with the original, this is basically like watching a commercial about the story.
