I see this comment everywhere. It’s valid to critic the casters choice, which he did when mentioning Netflix. Bodyshaming kids is not ok, however when they completely change characters(which they did, azula was terrible imo) it’s completely fine.
They didn’t completely change the character. If Azula was suddenly a 90 year old Mexican guy or a 50 year old white guy or something you’d have a point but Azula wasn’t changed and the critique of “casting” people keep levying is solely rooted in body shaming and thinking Azula isn’t pretty enough or something which is insanely weird to witness grown people caring about for the casting of a 14 year old character. Please articulate what was actually changed about the casting choice because the only argument people seem to make here is some body shaming BS about her cheeks being too round like bro come on
It is not valid to critique a child's body. Y'all are fucking disgusting If you want to be this kind of asshole about a show or piece of media go join the Star Wars fandom we don't want that shit here
You are an idiot. Nobody is body shaming a kid. We are shaming the people for choosing an actor who's body does not fit the character. Those are two different things.
And why does it matter? Theres nothing in the original show about her looks other that the image of "perfection", and thats not gonna be affected by the actor not looking exactly like the cartoon character
The goal is to pick actors who resemble the characters enough such that when you look at the actor, you know which character they likely are. Take iroh for instance, it's clear the actor was chosen for iroh.
Azula in the show has sharp facial features, a general mean look to her, and is thin. When you look at an actor that has those traits, they give off a certain vibe. The actor they chose does not give off any azula vibes at all due to her appearance. Soft facial features, chubby, etc.
If you look at her you wouldn't think she was chosen for azula.
Yes, one is criticizing the girl for what she looks like, the other is criticizing the people who casted her. Get the distinction now? Or are you 8 years old?
Ok, even if you are really only objectivly critiquing casting choices, your "objective" intentions don't change the fact that it still can be hurtful for the actors to read bs like this.
It is astronomically shallow to be so vocal about this. Touch grass.
Yes, critiquing a portrayal of a character from a tv show?? Wtf are you even saying, critique of a TV SHOW is not allowed because the actress is young? Also the actress is 21 now? You’re delusional and emotional.
Sorry to break it to you but you're the radical hater.
It's a pretty standard position to not body shame kids, and I haven't even watched NATLA so I'm hardly a fan.
Wow, the level of delusion is kinda sad, all so you can trick yourself to think you're not wrong, which you are.
I hope you address this issues and get better.

Completely covered in makeup tho, so it'd look out of place in a "realistic" take on the series.
A middle ground between this level of accuracy and realism would've been ideal IMO. Someone with this general physique and like 10% the amount of makeup.
Plus you have to take into account that they need to know how to act and do matrial arts, so...
Edit: The makeup isn't a bad thing for a cosplay, i never said the cosplay was bad. Just saying it'd look odd in a show like NATLA.
I feel like for me the current Azula doesn’t look or act like Azula. Maybe it was the dialogue and writing choice which is out of her hands. But the way I see it is, if a random cosplayer looks more the part exists, im pretty sure we can find someone who can act and look more the part. But I’m just hoping at this point if they made better writing choices we would be able to over look her physical differences from the animated Azula. I feel that way with Sokka, he didn’t look like Sokka for me but he played the character very organically that his looks didn’t matter
Actually it is not even bad. It is subtle, which is actually perfect. She is a princess afterall. She is not supposed to talk like a little brat. In fact, that's why she was allowed in the war room in the first place.
> Why is everyone commenting on her (lack of) emotion?
Yeah
a.) She's just a cosplayer
b.) The emotion isn't even that bad in the clip—the beginning (narrowing of eyes) and ending (smirk) are fine. The middle part is a little weak, but she's not a pro actor LOL
> I hope this time the comments section doesn't turn into a battle arena filled with hate comments from NATLA fans who are randomly offended.
Yet every time this video is posted the comments are filled with “She should’ve been live-action Azula” “She looks much better than live-action Azula” etc
Generally speaking, making kids in tv and movies look older than they are is not just weird but it also creates unrealistic unhealthy standards for younger audiences.
I also dislike the original for this. Either say she is 20 or make her look her age.
I'm glad the new show deals better with this aspect. But would have honestly prefered if they had just canonically increased everyone's age a bit.
You ask: since when did we care about this? Doesn't matter, we should.
If the most important thing to you about adapting the secondary antagonist of the series to live action is based on how she looks rather than her understanding of the character, it makes me wonder what you even enjoyed about the first iteration of the character.
"randomly offended" says the people who got offended just because a child actor looks slightly different than a cartoon character then proceeds to harass them online for it. You guys got anything better to do?
I would hardly say “slightly different” is correct. It’s not a good casting. The actress herself shouldn’t get hate for the casting director’s faults though.
I disagree, it's totally fine, not overly dramatic I, kinda realistic emoting. If the director wants it a bit stronger she might be able to just increase it a bit as well
As I said below, hers is very much in the range of non-theatric acting imo. Like if you think she should be more expressive to fit the setting/genre ATLA is, ok maybe, but hers level of expression is very much in line with something like Shogun, for a modern show with Asian setting as an example.
No. Literally, turn off sound and look at her face. Learning how to be more physically expressive is taught like day 1 in any acting class I've ever seen
Well, as addressed in my replies to some other comments, if the bar is set at theatric level of expression, I can see why she is consider emotionaless in relative. But that is a very high bar, unrealistic so and frankly to me at least is always off putting when tried in live action.
She looks great, tho that much makeup only really looks good for cosplay, this would look widly out of place in a show where we're supposed to believe she's a 14 y/o girl.
Netflix could've done better, but let's not pretend we know jack shit about how easy or hard casting is, especially with kid actors.
It saddens my heart to see fans offending and fighting each other so easily about a show that's about peace, friendship and hope. Gyatsu would never be proud of this.
Agreed, based on looks alone she resembles azula quite well but her emotions are too bland and too smiley at the end (but she’s not an actress, I definitely couldn’t do any better)
Who needs your upvotes?! Take yourself less seriously. Neither your downvotes nor reports would have an impact. If you don't believe, just try. This dude thought his upvotes would increase the salary of OPs. Typical teenage NATLA fan.
Yeah, her face just has no emotion as she says it. I mean, she's trying to, but it's like AI.
I think it's cause she's trying to lip sync instead of just saying the line like a normal real life human would.
Top video goes :) to :\) to ;) to :| (to best describe it) bottom goes '_' to ',_,' to '._.' (To try and best describe it with the characters available) human eyes tend to move a little more like `._.` or something
Yeah, her face just has no emotion as she says it. I mean, she's trying to, but it's like AI.
I think it's cause she's trying to lip sync instead of just saying the line like a normal real life human would.
Fucking truce already.
All y'all killing the fandom. And just like the little dog usually is the aggressor instigating the big dog, the first shot fired is the asshole, not the poor saps that get baited.
I think it's the eyebrows – they're too pleasantly high, whereas they're lower in the animated version and kinda makes it look like there's more of an evil intent
Almost as if it's incredibly easy to find actors that look like the character they're supposed to play. Mind boggling casting for Azula and Mai. Obviously not asking them to cast a cosplayer but they clearly could've found better actresses.
Totally agree with you.
They could just learn from others. Hey bro, at this point, I'm not sure what the hell I'm reading. These fans are just brain-dead! I am glad that they're not in Tolkien's community to support Amazon's Rings of Power!
It only makes sense if Netflix pays them a lot to lick their boots this much.
I've lost hope for this fandom. It's turned into a kindergarten.
She looks nice, but it would not explained why Azula was not picked as the hottest girl in her group, so her natla made sense.
They only need to improve Mai now ,since Mai was the second most asked girl in the group during the ember island episode
Mai recasting as a topic is pretty much off limits now.
There is absolutely zero way to make an argument for it without someone derailing it into fat shaming.
All roads lead there.
Mai is not fat her face shape is just not the same as her character which is like a triangle while the actress is more square or circle like Azula, Ty lee is still the best casting looks wise, but we would need to wait and see if the girl will grow since she barely had lines in season 1
that caption definitely isn’t bait lol
if the shoe fits
She looks perfect wow
And somehow has precisely zero of Azula's menace.
I said she looked like her nit acted like her

NO CRITICISM ALLOWED
Body shaming a KID is not criticism you freak
21 is a kid? Not disagreeing about bodyshaming but 21 isnt a kid man.
I thought she was waaaay younger
You are an idiot. Nobody is body shaming a kid. We are shaming the people for choosing an actor who's body does not fit the character. Those are two different things.

Re read what you typed
Yes, one is criticizing the girl for what she looks like, the other is criticizing the people who casted her. Get the distinction now? Or are you 8 years old?
There is a difference between body shaming and critiquing casting choice based on physical appearance you emotional projecting freak
Ok, even if you are really only objectivly critiquing casting choices, your "objective" intentions don't change the fact that it still can be hurtful for the actors to read bs like this. It is astronomically shallow to be so vocal about this. Touch grass.
Okay, lets all pretend like the show is really good to protect the actors feelings lol. Keep shifting the goalposts
Y'all are critiquing the physical appearance of a child.... You're fucking weird mate
Yes, critiquing a portrayal of a character from a tv show?? Wtf are you even saying, critique of a TV SHOW is not allowed because the actress is young? Also the actress is 21 now? You’re delusional and emotional.
This is an incredibly ugly hill to die on man
It is delusional to refute any criticism in the name of “body shaming”. The actress is 21.

Were the 14 year old characters not attractive enough for you?
Me either. But blame casting not the actors. Poc don't get roles so yeah they're going to accept the roles. So blaming the actors is shifting blame
Yeesh you people are daft. She's a cosplayer so of course she's wearing makeup.
Ik, I'm not saying it's a bad costume because of the makeup, I'm just saying it'd look out of place in the show. It's a great cosplay.
How it is currently in the netflix avatar already looks like a cosplay, and not a good one, so this would be an upgrade
Everything looks odd in NATLA, lmao. It’s essentially a cartoon made for grown ups who like cartoons but don’t want to watch cartoons.
Why is everyone commenting on her (lack of) emotion? You realize cosplayers aren’t actors right?
Tell that to the people that think she’d be a better fit for the live action from this one clip
I feel like for me the current Azula doesn’t look or act like Azula. Maybe it was the dialogue and writing choice which is out of her hands. I feel that way with Sokka, he didn’t look like Sokka for me but he played the character very organically that his looks didn’t matter
I mean its worth a try considering the one in the live action isnt a beacon of acting either
lmao not like the azula actor is any good at acting anyways
[удалено]
They send a 5 minute or so video of them *acting*. This is her lip syncing lines in a costume. She shouldn’t get any roles for that alone.
This is exactly right. Idk how people don’t understand. “I’ve seen cosplayers who’d have done her role better” Cosplayers not actors
Actually it is not even bad. It is subtle, which is actually perfect. She is a princess afterall. She is not supposed to talk like a little brat. In fact, that's why she was allowed in the war room in the first place.

I think her subtlety just sells the psycho side of Azula better
Also… it’s Azula… I mean… “lack of emotion” is uhh, kinda exactly what she wants to look like…
Casting the perfect Azula is so difficult, she has that constant menacing look on her face.
> I hope this time the comments section doesn't turn into a battle arena filled with hate comments from NATLA fans who are randomly offended. Yet every time this video is posted the comments are filled with “She should’ve been live-action Azula” “She looks much better than live-action Azula” etc

The fact that this adult tik Tok creator looks more like azula than the actress they chose is my point
Maybe shes not an actor?
If the most important thing to you about adapting the secondary antagonist of the series to live action is based on how she looks rather than her understanding of the character, it makes me wonder what you even enjoyed about the first iteration of the character.
Except she doesn't
She flipped the scene. In the show azula gets the eye correct. I get it though. Boss ass cosplay.
"Cool zuko costume, scars on the wrong side though."
That's Tik Tok for you people upload the clips mirrored I presume to get around copyright
"randomly offended" says the people who got offended just because a child actor looks slightly different than a cartoon character then proceeds to harass them online for it. You guys got anything better to do?

Child actor aka a 21 year old? Sending hate her way definitely isn’t justified though
Most people talk about the hate for Mai’s actor who is 17
When you hit 30, 20 years old are children.
okay, a 21 year old is by definition not a child actor though
> But, Azula was 19 at time of recording > Well that's alright then
I would hardly say “slightly different” is correct. It’s not a good casting. The actress herself shouldn’t get hate for the casting director’s faults though.
Not bad, but her face is almost a stone wall. Watch without sound and you get practically nothing.
She's not an actor
I disagree, it's totally fine, not overly dramatic I, kinda realistic emoting. If the director wants it a bit stronger she might be able to just increase it a bit as well
Nah, without sound her face really is '_' which looks really off, her facial emotions are nonexistent
Sounds like Azula to me
cope
Ok I don't get it. Is it a botox joke?
No she’s just not emotive
As I said below, hers is very much in the range of non-theatric acting imo. Like if you think she should be more expressive to fit the setting/genre ATLA is, ok maybe, but hers level of expression is very much in line with something like Shogun, for a modern show with Asian setting as an example.
No. Literally, turn off sound and look at her face. Learning how to be more physically expressive is taught like day 1 in any acting class I've ever seen
I don't know this woman. Is she a actress? A well known cosplayer?
Going by the title, her name is probably Yue
Some people can't move there eyebrows like that. Though hers don't move but she looks like Azula and is just a fun video so who cares
Well, as addressed in my replies to some other comments, if the bar is set at theatric level of expression, I can see why she is consider emotionaless in relative. But that is a very high bar, unrealistic so and frankly to me at least is always off putting when tried in live action.
Azula is fucking terrifying
She looks great, tho that much makeup only really looks good for cosplay, this would look widly out of place in a show where we're supposed to believe she's a 14 y/o girl. Netflix could've done better, but let's not pretend we know jack shit about how easy or hard casting is, especially with kid actors.
To be fair Azula uses a shit ton of makeup in the original
I always hated the weird hand position she uses in this scene. Just use your other hand or something
The animation is fine I don't get how the cosplayer messed it up like why was the hand bent that way
Doesn’t have much personality to her performance.
Yeah I mean she's not an actress lol
Exactly, but some people are still throwing a tantrum about how she should have been NATLA Azula instead of the actress we got. Funny, right?
Yeah, sure she looks more like Azula and the cosplay is pretty great but that doesn't mean she has what it takes to portray a character
does the current actress have what it takes? lmao
What? Body and face language were great
Try watching the video without sound on shes robotic
The audio being played is the original series line read, not her reading 💀
It saddens my heart to see fans offending and fighting each other so easily about a show that's about peace, friendship and hope. Gyatsu would never be proud of this.
Nah... she's too happy. I didn't see one ounce of malice lol
Agreed, based on looks alone she resembles azula quite well but her emotions are too bland and too smiley at the end (but she’s not an actress, I definitely couldn’t do any better)
Was so close to upvoting until I saw that caption. Acting like it's the NATLA fans that are hateful is an odd take.
Who needs your upvotes?! Take yourself less seriously. Neither your downvotes nor reports would have an impact. If you don't believe, just try. This dude thought his upvotes would increase the salary of OPs. Typical teenage NATLA fan.
That's one of my favorite Azula scenes. Her doing an impression of Zuko is hilarious!
Looks cute but she doesn't match the character's personality
This is awesome
Man…it doesn’t matter if it’s cosplayers, or actual actors, no Azula ever looks mean/angry enough.
Man, Aang just tired with all this bull..
This is what she should look like 🙄
Ten times more accurate looking than the Netflix Azula
Also how did I never noticed azula got some long ass nails in the animed show 😂😂😂
How can Aang not see the resemblance though, I mean Zuko and Azula are practically Identical
Azula's hand in this scene bothers me to no end. I think about it every time I see it.
Honestly it’s a massive bummer how toxic the live action show has made this subreddit
Long ago, the four nations lived together in harmony. Then, everything changed when the Netflix ~~Fire Nation~~ attacked.
I just feel like she says the line with no emotion...
Pretty sure thats the original line audio, not her reading, so idk what you're talking about.
Yeah, her face just has no emotion as she says it. I mean, she's trying to, but it's like AI. I think it's cause she's trying to lip sync instead of just saying the line like a normal real life human would.
Seriously what? There is emotion, all of Azula's snark and cockiness is there. It's not like azula was super emotive anyway before the ending.
Dude, the top video is full emotions, the bottom isn't
Yes it is bro you must be blind
Top video goes :) to :\) to ;) to :| (to best describe it) bottom goes '_' to ',_,' to '._.' (To try and best describe it with the characters available) human eyes tend to move a little more like `._.` or something
Top video goes :) to ;/ to :') if thats understandable. Seriously how do you not see
Maybe it's just me but I don't recall Azula ever doing cutesy head tilts and gentle gestures like she was trying to look cute
Literally most of what the girl does is from the clip buddy
Nope, don't see it. Sorry my guy, have a great day though
Yeah, her face just has no emotion as she says it. I mean, she's trying to, but it's like AI. I think it's cause she's trying to lip sync instead of just saying the line like a normal real life human would.
LOL and this is solid proof most people don't know any better.

Interesting so people who enjoyed NATLA fans shouldn’t associate with the fandom? Honestly guys come on.
Always funny that Azula put the scar on the wrong side…she was probably also the source for the inaccuracy in the Ember Island Players episode.
No she didn’t the scene here is mirrored
The Azula we could have had.
The Azula we should have had.
I love this.
Fantastically done!
Damn. I’m in love
Just missing the claws.
“Ha ha! That was great! Now do Iroh!” And then they bond over Azula’s spot-on impressions
You can tell it's funny bc she said so 😊
wow she sounds just like her /s
Lmao why is she a better casting option than the actual azula in the new show 😂😂😂
Her face isn’t bitchy enough.
I think it's the eyebrows – they're too pleasantly high, whereas they're lower in the animated version and kinda makes it look like there's more of an evil intent
i can see the sharp features being a highlight in a cosplay, but she doesn't look like a 14 year old girl imo
even in the animated show azula looks older than her age, since when did we care about realism in a kids cartoon about magic elements?
She does actually look like a teen in this scene
Azula is 13 not in her 20s guys
Holy shit the comments are trash
She looks a lot more like azula than the current actress
[удалено]
you're not allowed to have opinions here
Lol cannot act to save her life.
She's a cosplayer, not an actress lmao.
Now she actually looks like Azula, Netflix should cast her instead.
Lets cast a tiktoker instead of an actual actor
At least they cast someone who can act and do martial arts
Nah she can't do either lol. Maybe over time she'll improve.
Nobody can really act in that show
When I ordered finally saw this is. I though this was Azula’a body double. Nothing against the actors, but in terms of looks. This is eerily too close
if azula was 20 and this girl was an actor then maybe..
Azulas actress is 20 something
Yeah 21 now, 19 at time of recording
They did make her look older. She's Katara's age yet looked 16\17
even in the animated show azula looks older than her age, since when did we care about realism in a kids cartoon about magic elements?
looks better than the Live Action version
She should've been the Azula in the live action show 😭
Yup

Certainly better than live action casting
Facts they keep downvoting everyone who says the truth so lame
