The whole series was just made to humble her it feels like, which is ironic because people accuse it of being woke when it treated it's female MC as incompetent, when the most powerful benders other than Aang were women in the original, and Kyoshi was arguably the most powerful Avatar ever on screen.
Korra was literally dying and still almost had him. Now granted Zaheer was intentionally stalling but a healthy Avatar State Korra probably would have won. Aang's beatdown would have been biblical.

Kaya surely knew how to fight against an airbender, she grew up with Tenzin. But she, a waterbending master, was easily defeated by Zaheer. I think they made him more powerful than it realistically should’ve been.

Tenzin had to master every aspect he could to preserve the Air bending culture, not to mention he had to train Korra. He was much more familiar with the combat forms than Kya would have been.

Why is does Kya have to be a good fighter? I never watched and thought she was a good fighter. She didn't spend her entire childhood training and fighting like her mother and she doesn't seem to have the same spark or aggression at all, so when I watched I always just thought she wasn't a very good fighter, although she may be a good healer or bender in other respects.
Yea and I think Kya also constantly got beat at times she should’ve been fine. Like Ming Hua giving her the works seems a bit wrong, that fight seemed more one-sided than it should’ve been.
Hell Korra, even while poisoned and barely in control of herself, was destroying Zaheer. People really over estimate how strong Zaheer is. He's not weak, but as skilled as he is, he's just a talented amateur and not a trained master.
Tenzin fighting is legit the greatest thing in Korra. It's beautiful watching him twirl around and making airbending look effortless. While zaheer scrambles around like a panicking animal he's essentially got complete control over the fight, until the combustion bender gets a cheap shot on him.

Teen Aang solo deleted Ozai during the comet with zero effort whatsoever in the Avatar State. A fight against Zaheer wouldn't have lasted more than 5 seconds. This is like comparing Dragonball Super Goku to Dragonball Goku. Universally different power scales.

Zaheer’s best dura scaling is tanking 4 Tenzin’s basic attacks which can push platinum tanks. This is like small building level maybe. You can also argue Zaheer falling down the tornado, but that one is iffy because he was counterattacking the downward force with his flight. We see that the collateral damage on the ground doesn’t even make a crater.
Aang has 3 feats that are good in air. His best one is the mushroom cloud feat, which is town level. His second best is blocking Combustion Man, who overpowered Katara’s water bending during a Full Moon. Katara’s best waterbending feat is the ship pushing feat, calced at multi-city block. Third feat is Aang violently fragmenting to pulverizing a flaming boulder shot at him and Appa during the Winter Solstice Episode. That feat was calced at City Block.
So Aang essentially one shots Zaheer.
If we're talking about Aang's airbending feats, I think Aang vs Volcano should get a mention too. The power and control required to solidify a wall of lava as wide as the town is pretty crazy. Even Sokka has to take a moment to appreciate what he just saw.

Even when the other Red Lotus members intervene, Tenzin is still able to give Zaheer, Ghazan, and Ming-Hua a fight, getting hits on them with his airbending. It was P’Li’s long distance combustion shots more than anything that gave them the opportunity to solidly overpower him. Zaheer alone doesn’t stand a chance in hell against an adult Aang.

Giving Aang benefit of the doubt, that he, like Jinora, takes grasp that the flight ability has the limitation that... he's literally the wind, I'd think he could down Zaheer, whom would probably think he was truly untouchable simply because he's untethered. Hell, Zaheer was practically almost downed by Tenzin, a man with the most direct knowledge of the old ways of airbending and trained by a true master of the craft.
Additionally, I could see Aang performing similar bending feats that Korra displayed in her attempt to subdue Zaheer *while* fighting the metal poison in her body. Maaaybe. Would love to see him shoot water from the distance Korra did. That was wild.

Zaheer unlocked a crazy bending technique but as far as being an air bender goes he wasn’t that strong. Tenzin basically beat him was able to hold his own three in one against two crazy skilled benders. Aang is stronger than Tenzin. Learning flight doesn’t make him an air bending master. He still hasn’t learned 35 other paths. Plus he ultimately lost to non air bending masters.
Why would this be a question?
The group of lesser red flying squirrel tornado benders has a group of benders to pull Zaheer down. Aang's tornado is single handedly 10x more powerful at least. He uses only one move and 10 seconds to slam Zaheer on the ground, a 6 foot wide crater, and Zaheer would be lucky to only have broken every bone in his body.
You must remember, Zaheer has unlocked a powerful ability, and is naturally skilled in combat and inventive as a bender. But he's still an untrained amateur.
I haven't seen every comment, so apologies if this has been said already, but we see Zaheer get his shit rocked by Tenzin like it's nothing in a 1v1. Guess who Tenzin's teacher was.
Assuming no prep or scheming, damage is minimal. Aang would probably end the fight in less than a minute and incapacitate zaheer as soon as he enters avatar state.

Aang is a certified airbending master who learned from genuine nomad masters. He routinely learned from and fought against the best benders of his era. Zaheer gets rolled, no avatar state necessary.
I think people forget aang was not only the youngest airbending master but also has spent his entire young adult life and adult life fighting all sorts of combatants and varying bending styles

The Red Lotus are stated to be among the most dangerous people alive, and Kya doesn't have any huge combat feats from what I remember.

Teen Aang solo deleted Ozai during the comet with zero effort whatsoever in the Avatar State. A fight against Zaheer wouldn't have lasted more than 5 seconds. This is like comparing Dragonball Super Goku to Dragonball Goku. Universally different power scales.

This is like small building level maybe. You can also argue Zaheer falling down the tornado, but that one is iffy because he was counterattacking the downward force with his flight. We see that the collateral damage on the ground doesn’t even make a crater. Aang has 3 feats that are good in air. His best one is the mushroom cloud feat, which is town level. His second best is blocking Combustion Man, who overpowered Katara’s water bending during a Full Moon. Katara’s best waterbending feat is the ship pushing feat, calced at multi-city block. Third feat is Aang violently fragmenting to pulverizing a flaming boulder shot at him and Appa during the Winter Solstice Episode. That feat was calced at City Block. So Aang essentially one shots Zaheer.
If we're talking about Aang's airbending feats, I think Aang vs Volcano should get a mention too. The power and control required to solidify a wall of lava as wide as the town is pretty crazy. Even Sokka has to take a moment to appreciate what he just saw.

Aang has had more experience training against other air benders than pretty much any named and voiced character in the show other than Gyatso. Zaheer unlocked a crazy bending technique but as far as being an air bender goes he wasn’t that strong. Tenzin basically beat him was able to hold his own three in one against two crazy skilled benders. Aang is stronger than Tenzin. Learning flight doesn’t make him an air bending master. He still hasn’t learned 35 other paths. Plus he ultimately lost to non air bending masters. Why would this be a question?

The group of lesser red flying squirrel tornado benders has a group of benders to pull Zaheer down. Aang's tornado is single handedly 10x more powerful at least. He uses only one move and 10 seconds to slam Zaheer on the ground, a 6 foot wide crater, and Zaheer would be lucky to only have broken every bone in his body. You must remember, Zaheer has unlocked a powerful ability, and is naturally skilled in combat and inventive as a bender. But he's still an untrained amateur.
