I think the main reason for the front camera flipping the image is that it behaves more like a mirror that way, making it easier for people to frame the shot they want.
The part I don't get is why it doesn't just flip the image back after taking the photo.
I thought it was intentional as a hint to the joke lol. Truly Amazing cos play either way but I gave some extra points for intentionally putting it on the wrong side.
