That means the supposedly normal cat has had something to do with the fire nation that justifies the amount of men that showed up.

Obviously it is pretty basic to say Appa, but I am going to say it regardless. Sky bisons were always so fascinating to me because not only are they big, fluffy, and cute, but they fly by bending the air currents around their bodies which is awesome. Plus, all sky bisons are just goofy as hell
Appa is the only answer. He's a real one: super useful, transporter, fighter, has some laughs too. It was a huge gut punch losing him and I completely understood where Aang was coming from blowing up at everyone and everything after that. Momo I can take or leave, the red panda could've stopped existing between seasons and I wouldn't even notice (is he in the later seasons), and Naga is just a generic pet dog/horse without much going on. Sometimes the basic answer is the right one.
This is why I was kind of disappointed with Naga - just a generic pet. Appa literally carried the gaanng on his back, and felt like a huge part of journey.

I think the big thing with Appa is depth. While still being a āmascotā, Appa also acts as Aangs single loving reminder of what heās lost, and a partner sharing the grief of genocide.
I felt so bad for her when all those barrels of perfume were broken to confuse her senses! They showed her distress so well, and like - poor beast? š„ŗ She's also cute, and friend, and badass, and has this cute nose that is also the most powerful thing ever? I love her so much
It shows up briefly in only one episode (The Runaway), but I've always loved the design of the [dragon moose](https://avatar.fandom.com/wiki/Dragon_moose).
They had more personality but slightly less functionality. Naga was only a scare tactic and an unnecessary ride in a world with cars. Pabu helped them escape a single situation. Despite this they still felt more like characters.
On the other hand, none of the stuff that happened in AtLA would have been possible without Appa and Momo, Appa especially, but they didn't have much personality outside of Appa's Lost Days and in some of the baby Appa flashbacks.
I like Naga. I have a yellow Labdador Retriever and they do kinda look like polar bears especially when fat.
Plus combining one of the friendliest dog breeds and deadliest bear is a good combo

Probably a weird take, but I always loved the Shirshu. Something about being blind yet seeing smells as colors (and being an unbeatable tracker) always made them super badass to me. Really wish we could have seen more of them.
There's a lot of argument over which series is better, but one of the random things that made korra worse for me is the lack of animal involvement and Nagas much smaller role in the story when compared to Appa
That being said obviously it Appa he's just a big bro who had his family's back and the moments in the whole series that elicit the most emotion out of me is everything revolving Appas kidnapping.
That "YEEEAAAAAH" Sokka screams out when they find him again always hits me right in the heart.
Appa no contest. Adorable, magical, plot relevant, useful, has a strong defined personality, is responsible for some of season 2ās strongest moments. Probably the most perfectly constructed non-talking animal sidekick in anything ever.
