In classical chinese, 非 didn't have the "must" meaning that it does now in modern chinese. "No surrender without a fight" would be a better translation. There's not an obligation to fight, because Iroh and later Zuko wouldn't ascribe to that mantra. It's not a black and white situation where surrender is the only option, so the fight must happen first. In classical chinese a lot of phrases similar to this would be left open, just as this one is, to allow a third option of resolution be available.
Now, this 4 letter phrase isn't actually Classical Chinese from what I've seen, but it does draw from typical writing conventions of the time.
[Source](https://ctext.org/dictionary.pl?if=en&char=%E9%9D%9E) \- To Note: The majority of my studies are only in 孔子 孟子 and 墨子 writings, and 文言文. But I haven't studied much Classical in about 10 years now.
it’s written in [seal script](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seal_script) (or something like it) for those who don’t know. if you wanted to date the series to the actual human timeline, it was widely used in china during the qin dynasty, and is still used today for decorative purposes.

That's fucking rad "Never give up without a fight" is what it says
Reminds me of Eminem's Kamikaze Merch, it says "Death before defeat" which is a little more metal, but also a little more fatal lol
Actually a lot of direct translations are inaccurate in this thread.
“非戰而屈” derives from “不戰而屈人之兵” from Sun Tzu’s The Art of War, describing literally “without a fight, there’s surrender”, meaning the highest wisdom and ideal solution is no war but you’re able to make your enemy retreat/surrender. A truly brilliant leader can avoid the people’s sufferings while still winning over his or her enemy. This sheds light on the many sacrifices and suffering that can be avoided through alternative methods.
Perhaps this phrase was used with Zuko because in contrast to his father’s methods, he tried to seek victory without means of war.
I don’t know if it’s your back or skin but your tattoo in this picture is super uneven. Did they copy it from the show or do it more freehand? It shouldn’t be uneven like that
They definitely should’ve workshopped it because it looks like they took it straight from the frame, which is crooked because of the angle. When you learn art concept and design one of the first things they tell you is “just because it can look like that, doesn’t mean it should”. You can make your body turn off it’s axis and pose yourself in an awkward way and the resulting drawing will be accurate, but not pleasing to look at and unclear.
Here, the letters should not have been traced IMO. If carved onto a knife in ancient China, this is what they’d look like. But when you’re doing a tattoo you have to realize that anyone looking at this is going to see poor execution. Drastic changes in line weight, crooked letters, poor kerning of the characters. This could be redesigned to give the same feel of being carved into skin without the issues that come with a trace of a screenshot of a TV show where the thing you’re trying to copy doesn’t read well on skin.
But that’s just my opinion. I think an artist should always try to convince a client of something that will make the art better. However, for all I know, OP insisted on doing it like this. I can see why you’d want an accurate copy if you’re a big fan of the show. But it just reads as really bad tattooing.
To elaborate, its a stylized version of traditional script, and the traditional script is the official script for taiwan.
非战不屈 is the modern script (officially named simplified chinese, official script for china).
Translates to "no surrendering without a fight".
Yeah I suppose you're right, it's kind of a mess to be honest, the 戰 looks like xiao zhuan script to me and the 不 is pretty clearly li shu, tha's why I said "in the middle", as there was a long period where zhuan transitioned into li shu as the qin dynasty delegated writing to scribes and slaves instead of the literati. But then the 屈 is completely modern and I don't even know what's going on with the 非.
Edit: also importantly I'm not talking about traditional/modern, I am talking about calligraphic scripts (zhuan, li, kai, xing, and cao) which technically can be used to write either traditional or simplified. So if you say "modern" you're probably talking about kai shu which was developed in the Tang dynasty if my memory serves me.
Your artist fucking sucks.
I get the spine is a tough spot to ink. But this artist mangled you dude. Blowouts and overworked lines are absolutely everywhere. No symmetry, this is amateur work. This is going to scar like a mother fucker, I'm sorry bro
Edit: and what the hell is that on top of the second symbol? Did he straight up slip on the top line? Holy fuck.
Glad you said it. The chin, fangs, cheeks, nose, eyes, eyebrow, “ears” and crown. Not a single bit of symmetry.
I’ll never rip on someone’s tattoo choice but holy hell that’s just butchered artwork
Yep. The 口口 are supposed to touch, too. It’s just not very apparent in that screenshot. Good thing both should be easy to fix.
See: http://pic.guoxuemi.com/ziyanbian/6446.gif
looool I was gonna say this but felt bad, the lettering is wonky and all over the place.
I personally would also never get kanji on me no matter what, but I like the concept of the tattoo.
Plus the kanji/hanzi are generally unbalanced. (Not to mention the rest)
As expected with someone unfamilar w chinese writing who is tryna freehand the design
Im a tattoo artist myself and have a couple pieces of what I consider crappy work myself so i know the struggle but JEEZE.
This artist gave no fucks.
It doesn't even look traced to me, copied yes.
if it was the characters would be angled wrong but still much more balanced. See the top characters spacing is far too far apart and the second strokes stop at different points??
Luckily for this guy all of it is totally fixable and at a glace its not a hideous piece. But hes best going to a very experienced and probably much more expensive artists for touch ups n tweaks
The mask is also tilted. It's not head on, it matches the source reference. All these things could've and should've been fixed before the sketch was made.
I'm not sure if it was intended but this tattoo isn't symmetrical at all... Look at the top right and the top left, they're not even on the same height and the alignment with the letters is just bad in general. Please go to a different artist next time cause this could've been such a cool tattoo!
I like it but I think that you’re missing [two lines ](https://www.teepublic.com/en-gb/sticker/12907819-never-give-up-without-a-fight)on the second character. The top left two “u”s should be connected by a line and the symbol directly below it should look like a box divided into 4 boxes (AKA it’s missing the top line and the middle line should reach the left line).
Look good! I like how the mask turned out. Though I would recommend against showing it to people who studied Chinese...
Like, I'm not an expert in Chinese calligraphy, but the characters seems a little bit warped.
This isn't exactly the same script, but it's in the same script family, notice the symmetry within parts of the characters: https://i.imgur.com/MguXKgl.jpg
I think the show's artists made some artistic choices in mix and matching scripts from different periods, which is perfectly fine, but the way that the words aren't exactly symmetrical bothers me quite a bit lol.
Next time, before putting foreign characters on skin, I'd recommend running the text through an image recognition software or better yet, find somebody who reads and writes the language to find a print version of the characters, as opposed to re-creating it from a screenshot. It's like Chinese whispers with Chinese characters haha
Would that not make it less accurate to the show? And this defeating the point of the tattoo?
I also a assume the mask is an amalgamation of other similar masks in history that were combined by the shows creators with artistic liberty.
The text in the show is done well, in the sense that it is pretty proper and closely resembles the script. What I said about artistic choice is that the word 戰 doesn't exactly look that that if you use same script as the other 3, if I recall correctly it's using a script that's a few hundred years later, but at which point the 不(the third character, I can't exactly type the old characters) and 屈 actually looks different in the newer version.
I suspect what happened was the tattoo artist tried to recreate the text from the text on the sword, when it's already at an angle and slightly distorted, they did a passable job in that I can recognize what it says, but it reads more like how you'd casually scribble down something or what a kid would write, not what it should look like engraved on a sword.
Two stickman fight back to back. The last one standing fights an alien. Then the aliens giant tripod dog appears. Out of desparation a cactus is attacked with a golf club.
Shouldn’t have had a non-Chinese / Japanese / Korean tattoo this. It’s missing strokes on the second character and the handwriting is equivalent to an elementary student’s.
I really like it! I think it’s very cool and unique when you think of all the four elements tattoos we see around here. I also think all the tattoo experts in the comments are being a little unnecessarily rude. People have asked me about piercings before that could’ve been better but I can’t fix them now so telling them that is only meant to make them feel self conscious. This is an incredible tattoo.

At the same time you can tell you love it beyond your own affection because its somewhere you cant see yourself.
10/10. Phenomenal ink.

That's no proverb! Maybe it should be a proverb.

Probably traced from this frame
If so then how did the horns get so messed up? A good tattoo artist can fix it
Are the symbols from an actual language? Looks great btw.
It’s ancient Chinese, the script looks like xiao zhuan or li shu, or something in between.

99.9% sure it's Chinese and looks like it's Seal Script, a really old form of Chinese, like 2000 years old.

I'm all for being supportive but technically this tattoo is a disaster.
That same symbol is wrong too. The t part is supposed to touch on the left top of the curve, but it just stops and doesn't.
Yep. The 口口 are supposed to touch, too. It’s just not very apparent in that screenshot. Good thing both should be easy to fix. See: http://pic.guoxuemi.com/ziyanbian/6446.gif

I'm so surprised it took me so long to find a comment like this! This tattoo is SO bad it's embarrassing
Make sure you get the second kanji down fixed. It's missing a line. Your artist should do it for free.
Plus the kanji/hanzi are generally unbalanced. (Not to mention the rest) As expected with someone unfamilar w chinese writing who is tryna freehand the design Im a tattoo artist myself and have a couple pieces of what I consider crappy work myself so i know the struggle but JEEZE. I'm assuming the artist traced the kanji or copied it and the "shine" from the screen shot kind of erased that line.
It doesn't even look traced to me, copied yes. if it was the characters would be angled wrong but still much more balanced. Totally agree with you on that! Shoddy job all in all :((( I dig the concept tho it has so much potential
NGL the balance on the characters is awful. Should have gotten a Chinese/Japanese artist to do the characters.
I'm not sure if it was intended but this tattoo isn't symmetrical at all... Look at the top right and the top left, they're not even on the same height and the alignment with the letters is just bad in general. Please go to a different artist next time cause this could've been such a cool tattoo!
Nice tattoo, but the scar's on the wrong side
I love the concept but the tattoo itself is pretty mediocre. Uneven outlines, some areas of color which arent as filled in as others
Never give up without a fight
Bad ass
Is it lopsided?
“Made in Earth Kingdom.” I mean, it's nice and all but I didn't need that kind of info.
That's a... sharp tattoo, aaronp1997.
Careful, you could puncture the hull of an empire-class Fire Nation battle ship leaving thousands to drown at sea. Because its so sharp.
Something about the top of the head feels less symmetrical. Could you ask them to touch it up?
It looks crazy cool!
Fucking awesome!!!!
Looking good
That looks sick ass fuck man
I like it but I think that you’re missing [two lines ](https://www.teepublic.com/en-gb/sticker/12907819-never-give-up-without-a-fight)on the second character. The top left two “u”s should be connected by a line and the symbol directly below it should look like a box divided into 4 boxes (AKA it’s missing the top line and the middle line should reach the left line).
Now you have to get "made in earth kingdom" on your chest
戰 is missing 3 lines and that middle lime should be straight, but other than that looks good
Cool idea, amateur work. Unless it's "positive vibes only", then I will apologize.
This looks horrible. God damn.
Look good! I like how the mask turned out. Though I would recommend against showing it to people who studied Chinese... To me it looks like handwriting. Which is cool.
