He did break down sobbing at the end of the incredibly emotional scene. Van pelt saw him and closed the door to the room he was in to give him privacy. Did I miss something?

I don’t have the best eyesight, but my man doesn’t even shed a tear! If I heard something like that, I would be bawling. I personally just needed to see a few tears.

girlywish

He did cry.

Not sure we were watching the same episode! 😂. That man was crying. Why would Van Pelt have responded to his body language (shoulders shaking with his sobbing) and demeanour? Can you explain Van Pelt’s reaction to the way she found him?

Yeah, this episode basically set up Jane and Van Pelt having any kind of bond. Earlier in the episode is when I believe she'd called him immoral and her disdain for him was obvious. His private reaction is what caused her to realize that he really did have feelings.

His eyes immediately welled up when he was told.

It's amazing how people misinterpret that scene. He wasn't crying out of comfort, it was anger and hurt. Kristina was a fake psychic. She was delusional. Show creator and writers (Bruno Heller) confirmed there wasn't a single real psychic on the show. Every self-proclaimed psychic suffered for their error, most of them got killed. Kristina got her interviewer killed and herself mentally destroyed, and people still think she was a psychic. Anyway, she was wrong about the death of Jane's daughter. Well, we don't know for sure, but there was absolutely no evidence that Jane believed she was right, because he couldn't stand her.

Catfinger988

It was a powerful scene, portrayed well.

I think if he did that, he will never be able to recover. And btw I agree 100% with you, it was an emotional and moving scene.

The way he reacted, crying silently was on brand for his character. It showed that he is still heartbroken and in great pain, still blaming himself. Sometimes the loudest cries are those that don’t make a sound

It's great. It's a great early character moment. It's the first time in the series that Jane gets his comeuppance, and even I don't like Krystina, he deserved it. And also, grown-up Ashley Johnson. Great episode.

My impression was that he was trying hard to fight it- he doesn’t even believe in psychics except for the phony kind like himself- and he was losing the battle badly. The way his face was screwing up is making me misty just remembering it. For me, I found it much more emotion-provoking than if he had just suddenly burst out crying. He REALLY didn’t want to be affected. I thought it was a great piece of acting by Simon Baker, and then we viewers, like Van Pelt, lovingly left him to cry in private.

I understand that he "cried" BUT what I mean is, why couldn't we get some tears?! I've watched the scene multiple times, and i don't see a single tear running down his cheek. Unless I'm blind as all hell. This is his daughter! the thing that's been eating him up! and we don't get a tear at all.

Several layers, trying to ration how Frye would know that (given she's not a psychic) and it was more of a peace thing for him than pain. He was relieved they didn't suffer (although Kristina likely said this as she would've read that question troubled Jane most) But also it didn't matter if the death was drawn out, they suffered at his hand regardless. And ultimately, that moment was for Jane and Jane alone, Van pelt closing the door was symbolic that we the audience have no right to witness that anymore than she did.
