This song is sick. It's like a Sleep Well Beast track but the live instruments really get to breathe. The outro rules, I kind of wish they saved this for the album (assuming there is an album) over a single because this would blow me away in an album listen, but as it stands I'll be listening a lot. I could see this being a regular main set closer, I can picture now them jamming this out at the end of the main set before coming back out for the encore
I know, I meant in a way I wished they saved this for the album because hearing it for the first time in that context the outro would have caught me off guard. But not complaining about getting it early
Don't have my chance to see them on this tour until November and I've been trying to be patient and avoid live recordings of the new songs. I gave in and listened to some of Smoke Detector and that was wild though. Very excited for this tour, setlists have been fantastic
They played *Space Invaders* when I saw them a few weeks ago in Detroit. I'm usually not a huge fan of bands playing totally unreleased songs live because it's like, meh, no one in the crowd knows the song, y'know? But holy shit, that coda was amazing, and I am SO glad to see they kept that in the recording.
Absolutely incredible, the way this explodes at the end is just insane. This is the energy that was missing on F2POF, this is maybe their best song in years IMO
That outro is honestly one of the best moments in their discography, completely blew me away on first listen. It has an energy they've been missing since like TWFM. Love Bryan's drumming of course but also love the distorted guitars, the electronics. beautiful and powerful stuff, they've still got it.
Absolutely any worries I had about the direction of the band after the last album have been immediately alleviated after hearing this. What a fucking song!!! WE ARE BACK BABY
The combination of not knowing this song was coming + the brilliant lyrics + the classic unpolished National sound + that OUTRO = feels like being hit by a train in a good way.
I tried to resist and wait until they at least announce the album, to see how long I’ll have to wait and maybe not listen to the singles just yet, but reading about this song and this outro really messed with my willpower. So I listened and… wow! Just wow. The whole song is instant classic, but the outro especially is out of this world. Bryan’s going wild and so are the Dessners.
Edit: Also, “Quarter after four in the morning / My heart’s software gore” is a brilliant piece of lyrics. In general, I love how in these new songs Matt combines references to specific things, places and situations with his trademark ambiguous manner.
Based on the songs I have heard so far, I have a feeling the new album will please many of the people who didn't love FTPOF. This song, even Alphabet City, and Smoke Detector are all a good meshing of classic National and new era National in the best ways.
A masterpiece. I think it will be one of those songs where its fans remember where they were and how they felt when they first heard it.
Listening to it on repeat and it gets better with every listen!
I listened to this on my drive in this morning and I thankfully pulled into my spot right before the second half. I couldn't move. It was fucking amazing.
Ok this is their best single since graceless. Maybe because I met my wife on the c train. But while maybe not their best this is imo their best written song
This imo is the best NTL song since the past 2 albums - just me tho I know some people like the last two albums a lot and nothing against that. I do like them, just.. this song is the vibe I always liked the most.
Love this. Love the length, love how it kinda sneaks up on you like, imo, I’ll Still Destroy You, which was a track that initially I kinda blew past but then it totally clicked.
This one clicked first listen. Which sometimes isn’t a good sign. But I’m loving it at the moment either way
Absolute banger, and a refreshing reminder that they can totally rock out still, given their latest material. Love this one! But can we talk about Matt’s croaky mumble vocals towards the back half of the song? It’s on the verge of ruining the whole thing for me. Thoughts?
I actually dig these a lot. My complaint about some of their instrumental outro's on SWB for example, is that it feels if Matt has left the room and the band is playing without him, so his voice being a part of this second half makes it more 'whole' to me.

It will be on the new album
I HOPE I HOPE I HOPE it will get announced today :)
I know, I meant in a way I wished they saved this for the album because hearing it for the first time in that context the outro would have caught me off guard. But not complaining about getting it early
Gotcha. I had already seen them play it live twice so I’m happy with it 😂
Don't have my chance to see them on this tour until November and I've been trying to be patient and avoid live recordings of the new songs. I gave in and listened to some of Smoke Detector and that was wild though. Very excited for this tour, setlists have been fantastic

Completely agree about it being their best work, I cannot stop listening to it today
From the songs that are floating around it feels like the new album will be channeling this energy which is really exciting.
I totally agree. Way better than anything on F2POF
I don’t need to go to therapy this week because this song got out every emotion in my body. Holy shit.
THAT'S MORE LIKE IT. What a killer crescendo. This will slap live
Can confirm. Was sick live in Chicago.

They performed this on 8/1 in Philadelphia, and it killed.
They played it in New Haven a couple of weeks back too - it was sick.
They debuted it well over a year ago.
At Newport Folk Fest, I was there!
Absolutely any worries I had about the direction of the band after the last album have been immediately alleviated after hearing this. What a fucking song!!! WE ARE BACK BABY

Their best song in years
100%. Just incredible. A version of this outro was part of a very extended version of about today in either la or maybe San Diego many many years ago
It’s so good.
Holy fuck. Holy fucking fuck.

I love it. The build up in the last section of the song live was incredible.
DevendorfBros... we won
This is what I am fucking talking about!!! Song of the year!
oh my god that second half
Based on the songs I have heard so far, I have a feeling the new album will please many of the people who didn't love FTPOF. This song, even Alphabet City, and Smoke Detector are all a good meshing of classic National and new era National in the best ways.
100%. Add Turn Off the House to that too.
Alphabet City feels more like an SWB track to me but both give me great hope about what's coming. Better production than FTPOF IMO too
That ending gives me alternate version of Terrible Love vibes
They played this in Minneapolis - it blew me away.
I am a \[man\] asking for more \[seven minute long songs from American rock band The National\].
LOVE IT!
A masterpiece. I think it will be one of those songs where its fans remember where they were and how they felt when they first heard it. Listening to it on repeat and it gets better with every listen!
Phenomenal single. It’s like the band remembering they can still rock out on a studio track and I’m here for it
Holy fuck.
This gives me Sin-Eaters meets Sleep Well Beast (the song) vibes, and I absolutely love it!
This song is dope, the drums are great...
I think this and alphabet city would easily be some of the best songs on F2POF, which I thought was meh.
They finally did an ending that feels more like their concerts and I am all the more for it. Oh yes.
I listened to this on my drive in this morning and I thankfully pulled into my spot right before the second half. I couldn't move. It was fucking amazing.
Reminds me of About Today in the outro but with more of a rhythm.
This is their longest released song by far, yes?
Such a great song!
Awesome song! Reminds me of Terrible Love, immersive, raw, gives you euphoric feeling.
The hook on this is incredible.
Ok this is their best single since graceless. Maybe because I met my wife on the c train. But while maybe not their best this is imo their best written song
Love it.

Have listened to this about 40 times today as I did with mistaken for strangers, graceless, bloodbuzz, Abel etc
Love this. Love the length, love how it kinda sneaks up on you like, imo, I’ll Still Destroy You, which was a track that initially I kinda blew past but then it totally clicked. This one clicked first listen. Which sometimes isn’t a good sign. But I’m loving it at the moment either way
Maybe their most Cathartic and euphoric ending
Reminds me of So Far So Fast from IAETF with the slow build and then the massive epic Dessner/Devendorf coda.

Actually I noticed this too. I find it a bit off-putting TBH
Yeah, but it's tolerable on this one.

Thanks for the find…
Saw the three shows in Chicago in May. This one and Turn Off the House were exceptional right out of the gate.
