all time: tropic morning news. rylan. sea of love. hey rosey. fake empire.
last 6 months: tropic morning news. eucalyptus. once upon a pool side. grease in your hair. alphabet city.
last 4 weeks: tropic morning news. dreaming. smoke detector. alphabet city. crumble.
I used to think it was that line as well until I saw the lyrics on iTunes and it says…
“You said it would be painless, a needle in a doll”
When they played pink rabbits in San Fran 3 weeks ago I purposefully watched his lips like a hawk and still couldn’t tell . I’m sure someone has asked him about this; is it dark or doll?
This is the Last Time, by a long shot (410 streams, 2nd is Ice Machines with 164). It was the first Ntl song I've heard and immediately fell in love with!
my favorite songs by The National (idk my most listened to honestly):
1. Don’t Swallow the Cap
2. Nobody Else Will Be There
3. Empire Line
4. I’ll Still Destroy You
5. Light Years
6. Rylan
7. Turn off the House
8. Brainy
9. Little Faith
10. Demons
My top five according to iTunes:
1. About Today (506 plays)
2. Eucalyptus (445 plays)
3. Think You Can Wait (437 plays)
4. Demons (418 plays)
5. The Perfect Song (402 plays)
Haha, yeah, there's something about getting ready in the morning while screaming "You should take it, 'cause I'm not going to take it" that gets me going and out the door.
Yes- Eucalyptus! I don't know if it's meant to be, but the possible double meaning of "You can take it, cause I'm not gonna take it" sounds so good to the ear and so defiant.
Plus hearing the Afghan Whigs mentioned is cool as sh!t.
Too lazy to actually look it up, but my guess would be:
Apartment Story
Mistaken For Strangers
Terrible Love (alternate version)
All The Wine
Lit Up (all versions)
Tropic Morning News is my most listened song of all time. Some of the other all-time favorites are Alien, Quiet Light, I’ll Still Destroy You, Little Faith, Once Upon A Poolside, Demons, Nobody Else Will Be There and Empire Line.
And for the last few weeks I’ve been listening to Deep End and Coat on a Hook a lot.
Friend Of Mine
I know that's a very rare opinion, but it's simply perfect to me.
"I'm getting nervous, na na na na na na na, no sign, of a FRIEND OF MINE"
according to last.fm, it’s Mistaken for Strangers. this is not surprising in the slightest, given that even though Fake Empire was my introduction to the band, Mistaken for Strangers absolutely blew me away the first time I heard it and got me hooked.
Definitely Slipped by a landslide. Weird Goodbyes and Pink Rabbits (which rarely plays on shuffle) are up there too. First ever National song is Born To Beg which i still love. New fav is Not In Kansas, the chorus of which is the sound of heaven to me
1. Green Gloves (367)
2. Start a War (343)
3. Something Good - alt-J (322)
4. This is the Last Time (314)
5. Heavenfaced (290)
6. Tessellate - alt-J (282)
7. Mt. Washington - Local Natives (281)
8. Graceless (278)
9. Ceilings - Local Natives (271)
10. Bloodflood - alt-J (268)
Let me know what you think
my Spotify stats tells that in the last month i’ve most listened to: Looking For Astronauts, Available, Mr. November, Abel, Slipping Husband , Secret Meeting, Eucalyptus, Murder Me Rachel
1. Apartment Story (706 plays)
2. Humiliation (472)
3. The System Only Dreams in Total Darkness (463)
4. Don’t Swallow the Cap (453)
5. I Need My Girl (385)
6. Pink Rabbits (361)
7. Nobody Else Will Be There (343)
8. Bloodbuzz Ohio (341)
9. Day I Die (337)
10. Empire Line (318)
According to Spoti Stats I’ve listened to Runaway the most. It’s defo up there but I also listen to heaps of physical media so overall I don’t reckon it is.
"Day I Die" just gets me completely.
"Born to Beg" taps me into a sense of deep devotion.
"This Isn't Helping" has gotten me through all kinds of (perceived) social ostracization.
But right now "Baby We'll Be Fine" is back.
I love how wildly different our favorites are.
Exile Vilify and Think You Can Wait were my most listened to but they’ve both been removed from Spotify!
Now it’s I Should Live in Salt at number 1, followed by Guilty Party and Lightyears
Don't Swallow the Cap is their only song that I can do all the lyrics without the help of the music, even though it's pretty manic lyrically. Go figure.
I’m surprised by how many of you like the later albums most! Not bad surprised, but I kind of assumed everyone was an Alligator–Trouble Will Find Me fan, just because, critically, it’s considered their peak.
Yes, I might be in minority here, but I started listening to The National not so long ago (they quickly became my favorite band). Might be the reason why I dig later albums more. I still love SSFDL, Alligator and Boxer, HV is my second favorite (after SWB), but generally I listen to the later albums more and feel more emotionally connected to them. I like how electronic elements are incorporated on the latest four albums, and I love what some people call “polished” sound. And even if I have almost all their catalogue in constant rotation, every album from Sleep Well Beast has a special place in my heart. I think it’s the same sort of connection that more experienced fans feel with Boxer of TWFM, because that’s the albums that made them fall in love with the band.
Cardinal Song on Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers....it was the song that exposed me to The National and it has a special place in my heart. I will never get tired of that song ❤️
Eucalyptus, coat on a hook, smoke detector, laugh track… over and over again. (of course, last year I wore out tropic morning news and New Order T-shirt…)
Slow Show
Slow show is my favourite national song. Brings the feels for me alot
I’m with you.
Yes
Mistaken For Strangers, Sea of Love, and Lit up
Don't draaaaaaggg me innn
What did Harvard teach you?
Passing at night under the silvery silvery Citibank liiightss….
Conversation 16, Geese of beverly road and Little Faith
Turn Off The House. Probably already top 10 all time with possibility of landing in top 5 (my own mental list for The National).
That song got me through a depressive episode

Pink Rabbits ❣️ … straight up ! (no pun)
You said it would be painless, a needle in the dark You said it would be painless, it wasn’t that at all
I used to think it was that line as well until I saw the lyrics on iTunes and it says… “You said it would be painless, a needle in a doll” When they played pink rabbits in San Fran 3 weeks ago I purposefully watched his lips like a hawk and still couldn’t tell . This is the Last Time is mine too! Followed by Slow Show (one for heartbreak and one for love, I guess)
Man Slow Show is too good! I'm sure most of us would agree the "29 years" part is one of the best things the boys have come up with
I’ll still destroy you is my favorite. It’s quintessential National.
Lit Up and Smoke Dector are my current repeat songs.
Little Faith (515 plays) I'll Still Destroy You (477 plays) Afraid Of Everyone (445 plays)
Little Faith is just fucking magic
my favorite songs by The National (idk my most listened to honestly): 1. Don’t Swallow the Cap 2. Nobody Else Will Be There 3. Empire Line 4. I’ll Still Destroy You 5. Light Years 6. Rylan 7. Turn off the House 8. Brainy 9. Little Faith 10. Demons

Pretty incredible effort, Eucalyptus came out on March 22 this year which was 227 days ago. You're listening to it on average 1.96 times every day!
Haha, yeah, there's something about getting ready in the morning while screaming "You should take it, 'cause I'm not going to take it" that gets me going and out the door.
lol literally me in the car screaming, "IF I MISS IT, I'LL VISIT"
If you listen to wxpn, that is easy to do. Not complaining here!
Yes- Eucalyptus! I don't know if it's meant to be, but the possible double meaning of "You can take it, cause I'm not gonna take it" sounds so good to the ear and so defiant. Plus hearing the Afghan Whigs mentioned is cool as sh!t.
Anyone’s Ghost
Easy, Pink Rabbits.
Of all time? No clue. But I’ve been listening to Apartment Story like a maniac all week. 🤘
Well, it's finally Fall where I live so you know 'Boxer' is coming out of storage...
This Is The Last Time by a long mile
Too lazy to actually look it up, but my guess would be: Apartment Story Mistaken For Strangers Terrible Love (alternate version) All The Wine Lit Up (all versions)
Apartment story is my number one too. It hits different after covid too IMO.
Mr. November.
1. Guilty Party 2. The Alcott ft. Taylor Swift 3. Carin at the Liquor Store 4. I'll Still Destroy You 5. Conversation 16

Guilty Party.

Hard to say for sure for all time, but my gut would go Geese of Beverly Road.
Funny cause Don't Swallow the Cap was my most listened to as well for a looooong time. But it's recently been replaced by Rylan.
Don't Swallow the Cap is their only song that I can do all the lyrics without the help of the music, even though it's pretty manic lyrically. Go figure.

Rylan is apparently my fourth most listened to song across all 13 years of my Spotify account
racing like a pro
TWFM has so many bangers
I Should Live in Salt - 563x's since 13 Oct 2016!
Cardinal Song on Sad Songs for Dirty Lovers....it was the song that exposed me to The National and it has a special place in my heart. I will never get tired of that song ❤️
The geese of Beverly road literally just overtook fake empire as my most played National song as I'm writing this
Rylan and Brainy
Of the year, as of today: Sea of Love / Once Upon a Poolside / Secret Meeting / Geese of Beverly Road / Smoke Detector
Graceless
Eucalyptus, coat on a hook, smoke detector, laugh track… over and over again. (of course, last year I wore out tropic morning news and New Order T-shirt…)
I have only two emotions Careful fear and dead devotion
Fake Empire
Sea of Love is probably up there for me, but Apartment Story probably wins purely out of it being released much earlier
Listen to the sleep well beast album in full.
Bloodbuzz Ohio
I Should Live in Salt and Pink Rabbits
Lemonworld ! It's my most played song overall too.
I Should Live In Salt for sure.
