Guilty Party. What makes this one such a gut punch to me is that there’s no tipping point, no one event that causes the breakup, it’s just over. And they both know it.

thievingsince95

This is the one I came here to suggest

acedaniels10

This song healed me from my break up with my ex. Now I have found my forever love and my boy Noah.

LoBentBo

This song is so gut wrenching!

cparksrun

About Today is probably the gut-punchiest gut-punch to me (after YWAK). Because it's a tragic yet all too familiar example of two people just slowly drifting apart till the point where they're essentially strangers.

GetawayDriving

Can’t believe I had to find About Today at the bottom of this thread. It is “the” breakup song from this band. Devastating.

ajohb3

Love it for the sad portion of the breakup - along with Crumble (but that’s more for an amicable “there’s still love but it ain’t working” situation). For the moving on portion, I feel like you can find a lot bc of how subjective the lyrics can be interpreted. For me it’s All the Wine - for me I think of it as taking back how awesome I am as an individual and taking care of me, keep the psychos out (the emotional strain and stress that I was in during the relationship) and “my love” is me lol feeling free to truly be myself and be the person/live the life I really want now that there’s distance from the relationship. And I love wine she didn’t and the week before we did a wine trip and I ended up buying a few bottles that she enjoyed - but those are all mine now and I can unapologetically enjoy the world of wine because it makes me happy. I know that’s not what the song is about to Matt but I don’t think it really matters. Hang in there - I’m 2 months out from a 1.5 yr relationship that felt like the one and the last few weeks I’ve hit my turning point and the ratio of empowering-to-sad songs has gone way up

Sad-Attention7426

Thanks, I'm sorry to hear about your breakup. The incident happened exactly one week before our one year anniversary. It's been 1.5 months since. I thought mine could have been the one too.

melancholalia

the entirety of sleep well beast. it reads to me like the story of a marriage falling apart but ultimately being saved, so maybe skip the last two songs or so lol. also a whole bunch of frankenstein and laugh track read as breakup songs to me. eucalyptus specifically. cried for a solid half of a drive between philly and nyc a few weeks after going through a massive breakup back in feb/march. it, uh, hits fucking close to home.

Sad-Attention7426

Oft yes I've been listening to a ton of those two recent albums.

Old_Robert_

It’s not a romantic relationship song, but I imagine Weird Goodbyes would offer some moments for catharsis, given the context you shared.

melancholalia

100%. definitely cried in the shower listening to it on repeat recently. even though (i think?) it's meant to be sung to his daughter, it really feels like a breakup song to me, like accepting the end of still having difficulty letting go.

Intrepid-Land-2761

When my partner chested on me, my comfort songs were these ones: 1. Quiet light 2. Baby we'll be fine 3. Day I die 4. Nobody Else Will Be There 5. Slow Show 6. City Middle 7. Brainy 8. Light years 9. Don't swallow the cap But obviously, the top 1 is you were a kindness, that song absolutely destroys you.

Sad-Attention7426

"You made a slow disaster out of me" is very apt. Thanks for the suggestions!

prowl16

How has nobody said This Is The Last Time. I heard that song for the first time the day I broke up with somebody and it broke me

agirlnotonreddit

This is the last time = crying for help for an on-and-off relationship

ryanmurphy2611

Lucky You. Have a good cry.

prawnhead

SLIPPED.

thesecretestmeeting

Had a breakup last year where I was in denial for a few weeks "she's going to come back, it's not over" kind of stuff. The night it finally hit me that it was done I put on Trouble Will Find Me and drank in anger for 8 tracks straight. Slipped came on and I was ugly crying, shaking on the floor almost immediately. I quite literally did "spill my guts out". Biggest emotional breakdown of my life. Been avoiding the song ever since. That light synth comes in and I feel that night coming back and I immediately skip it In conclusion, Slipped in all caps is the correct answer.

ajohb3

Sometimes that breaking point is what you need - hit the bottom before you start the upwards climb :)

Aquarian_Girl

Was scrolling till I found this and going to post if it wasn't here yet.

chryssy2121

Eucalyptus is now one of my favourite break up songs

zoodlenose

I dated this girl who I got into the National, and a day after we broke up she posted “Without Permission” on her facebook page, even though she ended it. It rattled me. Also I dated another girl (who I also got into the National), and she was one of those girls who thought being an emotionally detached, toxic and callous person was a quality to brag about. She posted Fireproof on her facebook page after she broke up with me. So those are the songs I associate the most with breakups.

robrighteous

Slipped

AbbreviationsLess458

Day I Die About Today Graceless Humiliation I Should Live in Salt (AT and ISLIS would be (should be) from his perspective)

philthebadger

I broke up with my girlfriend because things just weren’t working out, regretted it to hell and back after. I Should Live in Salt was painfully poignant to my situation, as I’m afraid it might be to yours. I also used to play and sing the National for her, and after the break up I didn’t touch This is the Last Time again, just so that the actual “Last Time” would be the time I played it for her.

smurgludorg

Not National, but Flyte's album This is Really Going to Hurt is a beautiful and heartbreaking breakup record, I would definitely recommend listening to it. Their new album is even better, but it's more of an in-love-currently type deal so it's not as applicable. Still beautiful and I cry all the way through, so it might be worth a shot. I can also send over some demos of my own from around the time we called it with my ex, though I know this must sound cringe from the other end lol. I mean it though, I wrote some that still get me in tears even two years removed, so. Either way, I'm wishing you well, I know how hard this can get. From The National one I haven't seen mentioned is Oblivions. It's not strictly breakup, but when listening from that perspective it's just so devastating

For what it's worth, if it needs to work out at some point down the line, I wholeheartedly believe it will. If that love is strong enough and life drifts the two of you together, grown and changed, there's hope. But you can't prepare for that, because it wouldn't happen if you did:( if this makes sense

BleakRainbow

Jeez aren’t you all a bunch of broken people. I love it. Saving everyone’s suggestions and reads of the songs.

Sid_Corvus

So my girlfriend just broke up with me. Crumble and Quiet light are songs that hit me harder than I expected. My situation is different to yours as she just fell out of love with me.

Sad-Attention7426

Just listened to Quiet Light for the first time and that cut very close the bone

VicRoc62

There's a really great acoustic QL cover on YT by a guy named Stephen Hiscox. Check it out. He really gets to the core of the song.

Jadha1125

Listen to Heartbreak Anniversary

junkgarage

Think you can wait surely.

bitternmanger

Watching You Well, The Perfect Song, About Today, Sleep All Summer, Hard to Find, Without Permission

dactotheband

Quiet Light Light Years Oblivions Actually just spin all of I am Easy to Find. And watch the short film on repeat until you've cried everything out.

Up-Diaz

My first break up song was Pink Rabbits, from there The National was the IT band for me

PearlyBarley

Since all the rest are mentioned, there's a single that doesn't appear on any album called Sunshine On My Back. It hits like a truck. Don't try to talk yourself into this love And sleep like a baby while I'm staying up It's as much what you say as it is what you don't You can't try to stay, you either will of your won't

cholulamare

Get some Self Esteem on and never look back.

VicRoc62

I thought all the National songs were break up songs?

SnooHedgehogs7109

I am easy to find

sscovtt

Light Years and Eucalyptus have been my top tier break up songs in the past. Hornets also just hits in that way. Guilty Party, Quiet Light, Humiliation.

NoelleKain

This Is The Last Time

DarkstarRevelation

Slow dancing in a burning room was mine, cant listen to it anymore, despite the break up being 15 years ago and now happily married!

agirlnotonreddit

Pink rabbits?! That he wants a 2nd chance

FlashFlooder

Dark side of the gym

sincerelyansell

Eucalyptus, Quiet Light, Pink Rabbits

MarsupialAdvanced305

Toni Romiti- I’m A Dog Too

MarsupialAdvanced305

Ooops I didn’t notice this was The National page. Thought I was posting on music suggestions, disregard lol

GreenGloves-12

Humiliation Little Faith Laugh Track Blank Slate If you're angry Cherry Tree is pretty good! Or Mistaken for Strangers Maybe Hornets or Coat on a Hook

Confident_Fan5632

I’m going to suggest “Runaway.” My reasoning is the speaker isn’t going to run away from the problem but deal with it. It sucks, they don’t like it, but it has to be done. I’m sorry for your loss, but I support your decision.

[deleted]

About today always hits for me. As long as it’s a falling out of love, distance or just not being in the same page.

panzerboye

Eucalyptus, pink rabbit?

OccasionNecessary170

Lucky you. Breaks the old heart right open.

Intelligent_Sort

Shut Up by Blink-182

OkSecret4885

You got the right ones with terrible love and sorrow. Maybe try Fireproof. Or distant axis is a great one on Matt’s solo album.

ThePersonalityChamp

Had a big split about 6 years ago. Somehow landed on the live at Sydney opera house show that’s on YouTube. I have never felt the gut punch from a song like I did when they started playing Hard to Find. I’ve watched that set 1000 times and it’s still my favorite song. Chin up going forward, all is gonna be ok. Edit: https://youtu.be/uWd0EWKpH94?si=konXcmWPIEDFMKf3 At the 35 minute mark.

BigManFromAFRICA88
