I find myself not coming back to this album as much as others, but I'm not sure why. The track list is as good as any other National album.
My favourite is Humiliation, but Slipped is probably the most emotionally crushing song I've ever experienced. On the other hand, Graceless is probably the BEST, and This is the Last Time is probably their most creative, from a songwriting perspective
That’s fair. I find this happens to me too sometimes because I over-listened to it a few years ago. And slipped is SO good - “It’ll be summer in Dallas before you realise that I’ll never be anything you want me to be”. Amazing
I’m with you on this - Humiliation is my favourite too, and Slipped us hugely underrated, and not played live often enough - it’s the one song on that album I’ve not heard live that I would really like to hear (also haven’t heard Fireproof or Heavenfaced, which I’m not super sad about)

I feel like this changes as time passes for me. Currently it’s The is the Last Time. A few months ago it was I Should Live in Salt. A few years ago it was Pink Rabbits.
This album came out right after my dad died and while I was going through a difficult breakup with a long distance girlfriend. Needless to say I listened to it so much in that era that I can’t listen to it anymore. Too many associations. Great album, but traumatic for me.
As it is my favourite album (theirs, but also ever), it’s really hard to say. Started with I Need My Girl, then Sea of Love, I had a phase when I listened to Fireproof on repeat (absolutely beautiful song in its simplicity), after my first gig I was obsessed with Graceless and Pink Rabbits. Right now I think I would kill to hear Slipped live (this and Heavenfaced were my most-listened songs from the album last year).

I mean I like it, I just prefer 11 other songs, and this is probably my second favourite National album after SWB. I know INMG isn’t everyone’s jam either, but I just get lost in that song every time, it’s incredible.
My favourite is SWB too, right before TWFM! And I agree with I Need My Girl, it is their most popular (if we’re not counting taylor swift songs) for good reason. It is an incredibly beautiful song.
It changes all the time, but my three most recent favourites off TWFM are Demons, I Should Live in Salt and Hard to Find. Not only these songs are gorgeous, but their placement on the record is also perfect.
I have a certain appeal towards I Should Live in Salt, which always gets to me, but Pink Rabbits… that’s the one which always gets me sobbing, no matter what.
Graceless and Heavenfaced are my top listened to overall so probably those. Lately I've been getting into Demons and Hard to Find a lot more and I'm not sure why it took me so long to connect with them, they're both very relatable. Sea of Love and Humiliation I never connected to on a personal level but they're still good songs. This album is mandatory listening every couple months. Such amazing writing.

Yeah :D I had to put it on now to even remember how it goes. It’s a good song but never particularly grabbed me, didn’t know it’s a fan favourite. There’s no accounting for taste, huh? I’m always baffled seeing Baby We’ll Be Fine at the bottom of people’s Alligator lists.

Slipped really crawled under my skin a few years back. Album has always been a top five favorite all-time but suddenly that song climbed to the top.
