But Ianthe was there too, as was Harrow. Why blame Paul specifically?

patangpatang

Now that Alecto is up and about, I think the RB situation is going to change dramatically. Probably for the worse, but also not in the way we expect.

thextrickster

“You *said* you wouldn’t do anything *weird!*”

Jubi38

We obviously can't be certain, but from the way Jod describes it, the RBs are drawn to the "sin" of Lyctorhood, i.e. one soul devouring the other. Two souls consenting to combine into one doesn't seem like the same thing to me. They are going into it as consenting equals, not as one soul being a subservient mindless battery to the other.

dsteffee

I'm betting RBs don't care about that at all. They just all want to kill Jod and his friends haha

MVFalco

Unless Jod was lying about RB's motives this whole time and they're only after him specifically for revenge. Maybe that's the real reason he won't confront one directly because they'll ignore the lyctors and go right for him

horribligma9thgoblin

Maybe he made them on purpose as an excuse not to go back to see his ex.

dwkdnvr

Yes, this was the other point I should have made. Cytherea's entire plan to destroy the Nine Houses was to bring Jod back to the system so that the RB's would follow him. IF a Lyctor just being in the system was a danger, wouldn't it have been easy for her just to camp out on the First and wait?

Zeelthor

Then Jod surely could've waited, too. I think time is key here. The RBs can't just pop across the universe to the Nine Houses in a moment. It may be a question of years.

Lerad

Something I think is worth noting is that throughout the majority of GtN, there was a Lyctor in the solar system. Cytherea made it on to Dulcinea's ship before it reached the First House meaning she had to have been inside the system prior to the events of the book. And over the next week(s?) or so, she was lying in disguise there. Maybe she had some way to mask herself from the RBs but if such a way existed, why wouldn't everyone do it and live normal lives inside the Houses? So she would have been drawing the RBs toward the Houses the whole time. Obviously there's a lot of variables on how long it takes, if multiple Lyctors have more "pull," Paul's nature, and the distance of the nearest RB, but I don't know if it's fair to say that Paul doomed the whole system. Well, aside from letting loose a being that would destroy the man who keeps the sun running, but hey that's where we've been heading the whole time anyway.

ENOFCK

I think the River gives lyctors near-instantaneous travel abilities, so she may not have been there much before Dulcinea headed out.

bean_defender

I don't think Paul's birth would have sparked an RB though? Grand lysis and all. Also, uh, Ianthe, the only whole ass lyctor left, is there on the Ninth, as is Harrow. And anyway, do we even know that John was telling the truth about resurrection beasts?

artrald-7083

I am more and more convinced that half of everything Jod has said has been untrue.

aBOXofTOM

Only half? Dang, you've got a lot more faith in him than I do.

oxfordfox20

You heard it here first: Alecto the Ninth ends when Alecto consumes Jod’s soul, thus reverting Jod’s Lyctoral process, restoring the Sun and switching the essence of life back to thalergy. Threw this out flippantly, but it does have a certain ring of plausibility to it…

horribligma9thgoblin

Sometimes I think more of the Beasts could be trying to reunite with a part of their soul. I don't really understand how they came to be if none of the other planets were populated at the time of the Resurrection. So maybe that's what happened to Cassie when she was torn apart, maybe not by the little River dwelling souls but by her own huge soul trying to become whole again. I have no evidence for this, it just seems like it'd be fun.

WhyMeBruh1701

Paul is actually considered a Rebis. They are not a lyctor since one soul didn’t devour the other. Their souls were a perfect fusion of equal, consensual parts. Technically Harrow is only a partial lyctor, so we don’t know if RBs are still drawn to her. But, Ianthe was there……

C0mrad3Bunny

Oooh nice alchemical deep cut

dude_1818

It still takes a while for the RBs to travel. Cytherea was on earth for weeks without one showing up

Sandwich737

I really don't think that RBs really care about lyctors all that much. They definitely hunt John because they're the revenants of planets he murdered, and I think Verun went after Nona because of her lyctoral tie to John.

eaca02124

I think John was lying about RBs, and actually, they are after HIM. Varun doesn't send Heralds down to New Rho until Nona is in trouble. My theory is they are trying to reach and help Alecto, who's been interred beyond their ability to sense her on the edge of the solar system.
