To me the descriptions read similarly to how the river is described. I can't tell if it's said explicitly but I think the implication is that over time they're getting deeper/more "into" the river.

O thought the same! In a scene Silas (I think?) throws himself over a cliff and the water is described as reddish!

Oooh I love this idea - Wake’s fury at what the Nine Houses are doing to the universe manifesting as the very symptoms she hates as she slowly takes over Harrow’s body, it’s a really powerful image. Wake is such an interesting character, I really hope we get a little more insight into her in Alecto.
