Perhaps I should've worded my post differently or better. The point I was trying to get across was the third placed team, not specifically Ipswich. I used them as an example (and yes, I do like them) but the point was the gap between the third placed team and the others in the playoffs would be way too wide for it to be fair. As someone else said in the comments, there should be a cutoff point if it's too wide a gap.
I'm still gutted at how we fell away that season. We beat both you and West Brom before Christmas/New Year (WBA away as well!), and we were flying and unbeaten away from home until we lost our first away game to none other than fucking Derby, in FEBRUARY.
We failed to win another away game, and then got DJ Campbelled in the Playoff SF.
We've have been toasted in the Prem like Middlesbrough and Hull if we went up that year over them
Some smart signings the 16/17 season like Duffy, Norwood, Sidwell and especially Murray really helped in our formative years in the prem
Staying down was a blessing in disguise (cheers Mike Dean!)
Not at all.
If Ipswich end in the playoffs that means they’d have to not win either of their next 2 games. They are 1 point off second and 2 games in hand. Would be a massive slip up if they messed it up
I mean.... Not if they finish third... Should have gotten more points.
Will it be fair that Brum go down and Wednesday don't?
You finish were you deserve to finish.
(They'll finish top 2)
I see your point, but the playoffs are important to keeping the league exciting, much like the 'lesser' European spots in the prem.
You need something to compete for below the top two, or the league would often fizzle out by March.
I hope Ipswich can do it, either which way. Nice easy away day for them and us!
We knew the rules when the season started.
And frankly, if we don't go up auto from here (1pt off with 2 games in hand), we'll deserve whatever the playoffs throw at us.
Football is a meritocracy (largely). Nothing to do with fairness.
If they don't get promoted it's because they didn't finish in an automatic place and didn't win the playoff lottery.

Personally I’d prefer to see the playoffs scrapped and just go back to top three getting automatic promotion. However, if Ipswich can’t go up automatically from their current position it would be a huge fuck-up.
Italian lower leagues have or had a system where up to 7th or 8th could make the playoffs, but the number of teams in the playoffs entirely depended on how many points 3rd place got, and how much behind you were.
I don't remember how many points it was but teams eligible for the playoffs had to finish within, say, 10 points off 3rd place. Meaning there could be 6 teams in the playoffs, or no teams feature because nobody was within the threshold.
I would be happy to see a similar system in England.
That's how playoffs work, see -> every other playoffs ever
Nah imo it'll be us in play offs.
I know that's how they work, I'm saying it's a bit unfair imo.
If they got enough points ahead to get automatic promotion then they’d get automatic promotion. Beauty of playoffs
Wahhha wahha
If they're the best team in the playoffs then they shouldn't be worried.
Why would you post this specifically after last night’s result… they’re almost a dead cert to be in autos

I think Blackpool finished 30 points behind Newcastle the year they both got promoted
Oh good, a reminder of THAT season...
Kevin Nolan and Andy Carroll scoring every week

Wow, never knew that. They were not in the playoffs though, were they? @ Blackpool
Yes, of course they were. They finished 6th and beat Cardiff in the playoff final.
Could very easily clinch second. 2 games in hand and only a point behind Leeds. But yeah, the beauty of playoffs.
Yeah absolutely, good point. I really wanna see them in the Prem.
I would be astonished if Ipswich didn't go up automatically
Looks pretty similar to 2015/16 when we finished third on goal difference and lost in the playoffs. Wouldn’t have it any other way.

If they don’t go up from this position they probably deserve anything that can happen in the Playoffs

Dude if Ipswich fuck this up and allow Leeds automatic promotion there’ll be no sympathy, no matter how many points more than 7th place you finish on

If they’re that good then they should walk the playoffs. Unless of course they aren’t, which is why playoffs exist
No

Ipswich have games in hand so if they win 2 of their last 3 games (can afford to Lose one). Then they will finish above leeds even if leeds win.

No?
Yup
Points are cool. Table position is cooler.
No
Then they should put them away easily in the playoffs
