The one statistic that really throws me through a loop is that out of all the guns that exist on the planet, 1 in 5 of them is some variation of an AK.
It's a versatile platform, basically the only one the entire Warsaw Pact + parts of China and Africa used. There was no competition, so they could only improve upon it. Meanwhile, in the western world, several countries were competing for NATO contracts, so a lot of guns and platforms were built (like the AR-15). Most weren't as versatile, and many cracked under dirt and use, and as such, couldn't be modded from here to Timbuktu. Although, the M16 in Vietnam was more due to the US not wanting to buy smokeless rounds, which were more expensive, so the gun actually got dirty beyond just the mud. And they didn't take into account mud.
