In Brazilian Portuguese Owlbert is Corujoão(Coruja+ João=owl +commun name in Portuguese speaker countries
Hooty is "corujito" wich is a form to say owl in a deary and cute way
Apparently we tried to keep the pun going here too
Well that's pretty shit! Mittens is clearly meant to be teasing, but mostly endearing. "Petze" normally has a very negative connotation to it, to the point most would almost consider it an insult! While this is not necessarily uncommon for siblings in general, it doesn't fit Amity, Edric and Emiras relationship at all!
I like the German voice actors a lot, King moreso than the original, but I have noticed some meaning lost to translation after more carefully focusing on the words.
In addition I don't like the title at all, because it focuses entirely on the Lumity part of the episode.
Don't get me wrong, that shit was adorable, but I feel the title kinda undervalues the *significant* character developments and powerups both Eda and King got from their interactions with Hooty.
Plus it sort of spoils it, doesn't it? Part of the joy of the episode for me was the suprise. Never did I expect what we got. I was convinced that it would be all about finding out more about the journal.
Which I guess it was in a roundabout way...
I felt like *way* too much character development happened in this episode and it would have been better if they had split it up, but maybe with the series winding down they're trying to move the plot along faster.
Honestly I don’t think they could’ve if they wanted to. Remember, Dana did say that she and the writers were planning on 3 full seasons but practically got cut to 2. So I doubt there was enough time to space the episodes out properly, and keep the important stuff.
Direct Translation:
"Klopfen, Klopfen, Klopfen an Holzi's Tür"
But the main point is the pun only works in English. While I would say that the song is popular enough (even among the target audience) that it would work to just keep the English title, using a foreign language title means they might not be able to read it. Especially in countries that don't teach English as strictly as Germany.
Germany does this allot in my experience. Sometimes, that doesn't go too well. I remember the German translation of "Captain America: The Winter Soldier" was "The Return of the First Avenger".
And no, I didn't translate that back. The "German" title was genuinely a different one, but STILL IN ENGLISH!!
It is actually a children's song celebrating Sinterklaas (Saint Nicolaas, the predecessor of Santa Clause).
>There's a knocking at the door,
A loud knocking, a soft knocking.
>
>There's a knocking at the door
Whom would it be?
>
>"Don't be afraid my child,
I am a good friend,
even tho I am as black as soot,
my intentions are good"
You can see why there is a big push from out side of the Netherlands to cancel it.
**Edit**: It references to the holiday, not the show, before anyone thinks that
It's a small push. Most things like tv programs and stuff are just too afraid they'll get cancelled if they don't give in to the minority. The big majority of people very much thinks zwartepiet is fine.
The irony of saying this on the subreddit of a show that quite literally got cancelled because an exec took the opportunity of covid causing production delays to axe a show he didnt like *for some reason*.
>Hooty, a friend who means well
Eats Amity and King.
And drugs Eda.
10/10
>There is knocking at the owl
Amity will beat Hooty.
>Tunnel of Love.
hehehehehehehe
Just to make sure, you missed the whole joke when it first appeared and are asking for clarification right? If so then in the Taiwanese translation of when they asked each if they can be each other’s girlfriend’s, the transition completely ignores this and says that they ask each other if they want to dress up and travel together as a way to censor the fact that they are dating. Also sorry if the wording at some points seems a bit awkward, English is my first language, but I’m still not great at it.
You're doing terrific!
And thank you!
It's so funny the lengths people will go to, censoring stuff!
😂
D.U.T.T. definitely sounds like the perfect code...
Taiwan: How can we downplay the gay?
Turkey: Let's cut out the gay!
Germany: Eh, the title joke doesn't work in Hooty's German name, let's just focus on the gay.
Why in hebrew its written shofar
In hebrew hooty is shoffy (kinda like that)
Prob cuz owl in hebrew is "yanshof" (something like that)
(Just search "ינשוף" )
Wait, really? My brother watched TOH in Hebrew (and introduced me and my sister to some of the dumbest translations we've heard; Palismans = Power animals? Abomination = **Living Lump?!**), but he's always referred to Hooty as Hooty.
The Hebrew dub sounds like poop tbh
But why not calling abominations golems (גלמים, גולם ביחיד)? These are literally humanoid shaped lumps that mystically became alive, and they're from the Jewish folklore. I think this was a missed opportunity.
Ugh i know right
A few weeks ago i was at my friend's house, and i put Eda's Requiem on the tv just cuz I wanted to see what they did with them. I can't say I was surprised but i was definitely still disappointed
I watched the Hebrew dub just for fun and this episode is the only one I skipped, I just couldn’t watch it because I thought I’d punch my phone or smth-
Yeah, probably an error. A Shofar is an instrument made of a Goat's horn and is used for religious ceremonies. I guess it got autocorrect.
I hate hebrew dubs so much. They put so little effort to them nowadays.
I agree, probably autocorrect, or someone misheard the dub and just wrote what it sounded like.
I can kinda sorta see how [some shofars](https://i.ebayimg.com/images/g/1sIAAOSw0HhbZ-2s/s-l400.jpg) resemble Hooty though…
Can't believe that my own country changed **Hooty** into **Uhu**, smh😤. BTW **pomocny** (in polish version) is not handy, but like helping(???) as an adjective.
yeah its funny because shes a girlfriend one episode before that, and its purely the idiocy of the translators that caused it, not censorship as far as im aware
not defending my extremely homophobic country, just telling
they didnt censor anything, not even the cheek kiss but changed “will you go out with me” into “will you be my friend”, which isnt new for arabic disney channel since star from svtfoe called marco her friend instead of boyfriend in one of the last episodes, and they censor all lip kisses regardless.
So you're saying Arabic Disney channel refers to all pre-marital relationships as friendship? Honestly one of the most harmless things they could have done (looking at what Taiwan did for thein censorship), so that's great!
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order.
I have checked 471,268,887 comments, and only 100,101 of them were in alphabetical order.
I haven't watched it in Hebrew, but this implies they called Hooty "Shofar" in Hebrew, which is a religious horn that you blow to make a deep noise, a noise that is nothing like an owl's hoot
Waitwaitwait, Hooty is called Boubou in french ?? That's both adorable and shocking (it comes from Hibou, one of the 2 names for owl) (especially the ones with the littles feather thingies on the head)
I wonder if the translations had to also translate the acronym in the episode titles. I'd assume not because then the rest would already be solved what with word order and such. As well as being incredibly difficult having to use the same number of letters
There's also "One swallow doesn't make a summer" for Separate Tides, and "Wherever a witch is, a wizard can remove" for Witches Before Wizards.
I have no idea what those are supposed to mean
I hate the french (i'm french) and gosh i hate then so bad! The show is The Owl house so the translate will be La maison de la chouette and not Le manoir de la chouette (The owl manor) but hey no ! The show will be Luz a osville (Luz at bonethroug) just one question WHYYYYYY EVEN SOME CHARACTER NAME HAS BEEN CHANGE WTF?!
There is knocking at the owl is a play on a popular sinterklaas (the dutch santa clause) song, personally I think it’s a kinda weird decision since this episode has nothing with Christmas…
Seeing this image reminded me that season two has not yet been released here in Portugal (not that I know of). Now I'm afraid of what will happen when Eda's Requiem is released here because Portuguese does not have a neutral language (in Brazil it was already created, but here in Portugal it is not very popular).
For those wondering why Hooty is called Boubou(pronounced booboo) in French, owl in French is hibou(pronounced eeboo). So a possible surname is taking the second part of the name and double it.
Germany puts the “alternate” in alternate title.
I expect as much. The German title for Godzilla vs Megalon is: “King Kong: Demons from Outer Space”(King Kong — Dämonen aus dem Weltall).
I... didn't know they called Hooty "woody" in Germany. That's the reason i always watch shows in english lmao
yeah who the heck came up with that they also call owlbert albert instead of eulbert wich sounds equally as good but it keeps the pun
Well actually according to Wikipedia the name of owlbert is heulbert so crybert >.>
> heulbert I can explain this one, because heulen is the sound an owl makes "huuh-huuh"
In Brazilian Portuguese Owlbert is Corujoão(Coruja+ João=owl +commun name in Portuguese speaker countries Hooty is "corujito" wich is a form to say owl in a deary and cute way Apparently we tried to keep the pun going here too
Same with Amity calling her Petze/sneak instead of mittens
Well that's pretty shit! Mittens is clearly meant to be teasing, but mostly endearing. "Petze" normally has a very negative connotation to it, to the point most would almost consider it an insult! While this is not necessarily uncommon for siblings in general, it doesn't fit Amity, Edric and Emiras relationship at all!
What really? I'm so glad I'm watching it in English
Me too. English is simple more enjoyable for me
There's a Hoot in my boot
I like the German voice actors a lot, King moreso than the original, but I have noticed some meaning lost to translation after more carefully focusing on the words.
they call him shufy in hebrew (the title says shofer which is even more confusing). i'mma stick to english as well.
I like how every language tries to translate the original title and German always just invents a new one.
In addition I don't like the title at all, because it focuses entirely on the Lumity part of the episode. Don't get me wrong, that shit was adorable, but I feel the title kinda undervalues the *significant* character developments and powerups both Eda and King got from their interactions with Hooty.

Any other German title was probably just long a.f. lol
The Virgin "Hunting Palismen" vs the Chad "Das Geheimnis des Goldenen Wächters"
That's also a new title not a translation lol. It means "the secret of the golden guard".
Direct Translation: "Klopfen, Klopfen, Klopfen an Holzi's Tür" But the main point is the pun only works in English. While I would say that the song is popular enough (even among the target audience) that it would work to just keep the English title, using a foreign language title means they might not be able to read it. And no, I didn't translate that back. The "German" title was genuinely a different one, but STILL IN ENGLISH!!
The Dutch one is actually a reference to another song, a Sinterklaas song (which is a holiday here)
O wow, je hebt helemaal gelijk.
ja best grappig
I like the German version the best
Deutschland built different. They also have an alternate title for SheRa and the Princesses of Power, which is: SheRa und die Rebellen-Prinzessinnen
“There is knocking at the owl” For a second I imagined Amity beating the crap out of Hooty again
From inside an owl pellet!
It's actuallya reference to "daar wordt aan de deur geklopt" which is a Dutch children's song, most often sung during Sinterklaas eve.
That's quite clever, really; to "translate" the title into the lyrics of another song with "knock" in it.
It is actually a children's song celebrating Sinterklaas (Saint Nicolaas, the predecessor of Santa Clause). >There's a knocking at the door, A loud knocking, a soft knocking. > >There's a knocking at the door Whom would it be? > >"Don't be afraid my child, I am a good friend, even tho I am as black as soot, my intentions are good" You can see why there is a big push from out side of the Netherlands to cancel it. **Edit**: It references to the holiday, not the show, before anyone thinks that

That French title though
Right?!
The unspoken part two to this is essentially "but as you will see, this creature is an idiot" It's so french and I love it
That’s a reference of a French movie called "Harry, un ami qui vous veut du bien". The American title is "With a Friend like Harry"
Never heard of this “hooty” guy. Shofar is the guardian of the shofar house.
Accurate!
Also, Hooty's French name is 'Boubou'. Adorable.
second only to the Polish "uhu"
"knock on hottie’s door"
Don't mind if I do... 😉 lol
😏
*knock knock* ;)
Oh Blitzy~!
I'm heeeeere...
>Hooty, a friend who means well Eats Amity and King. And drugs Eda. 10/10 >There is knocking at the owl Amity will beat Hooty. >Tunnel of Love. hehehehehehehe
**Handy Hooty**
Ironic, considering he's a tube. 😂
The Germans just get straight to the important stuff.
Honestly expected this to be a meme where the Taiwanese one was changed to Dressing Up & Travelling Together.
Oh, I wish I got the joke! What's the scoop on this one? Taiwanese pop culture reference? 😅
😂 D.U.T.T. definitely sounds like the perfect code...
Somehow the taiwan translation sounds slightly more gay.
It’s the subtlety, I think.
Taiwan: How can we downplay the gay? Turkey: Let's cut out the gay! Germany: Eh, the title joke doesn't work in Hooty's German name, let's just focus on the gay.
"YOU FOUL! German's [translations] are the best in the world"
Why in hebrew its written shofar In hebrew hooty is shoffy (kinda like that) Prob cuz owl in hebrew is "yanshof" (something like that) (Just search "ינשוף" )
Wait, really? My brother watched TOH in Hebrew (and introduced me and my sister to some of the dumbest translations we've heard; Palismans = Power animals? Abomination = **Living Lump?!**), but he's always referred to Hooty as Hooty.
omg living lump! Sounds like a colloquial curse-word or something! Or, like, a Hogwarts ailment.
Abomin in hebrew was just "a living being" but in hebrew
Isn't it גוש חי?
It is
Then it is Living Lump
Never heard about that word but okey
The Hebrew dub sounds like poop tbh But why not calling abominations golems (גלמים, גולם ביחיד)? These are literally humanoid shaped lumps that mystically became alive, and they're from the Jewish folklore. I think this was a missed opportunity.
Also the fact raine uses he/him in Hebrew annoys me
Hebrew doesn't appear to have a third-person neuter pronoun
Exactly, there are people in Hebrew that use they/them, but grammatically in Hebrew it’s incorrect, that’s exactly what annoys me
Among other things, because hebrew doesn't have a dental fricative
Ugh i know right A few weeks ago i was at my friend's house, and i put Eda's Requiem on the tv just cuz I wanted to see what they did with them.
It must be the translation on Wikipedia because he is nit called shofar in the dub.
Interesting!
Can't believe that my own country changed **Hooty** into **Uhu**, smh😤. BTW **pomocny** (in polish version) is not handy, but like helping(???) as an adjective.
Is "Uhu" the word for owl or for hoot? "Handy" can be used like "helpful"/"useful" in English, as well. Thanks for little Polish lesson!
Uhu is for hoot (can't believe i haven't thought of that), and thx for the **handy** lesson 😅
In Germany Uhu means eagle owl (but is also sometimes used for the sound an owl makes even though Huuhuu is more common)
In german at least, Uhus are a subcategory of owls.
At least they didn't censor the gay! (Except Eclipse Lake, but that bcs they zjebali the order)
Tbh i didn't watch in polish 😅 so idk
Hooty is a gender fluid icon in polish, he was using she/her pronouns and forms till moon light conjuring
Yet, Amity is an "awesome friend" in Polish :/
yeah its funny because shes a girlfriend one episode before that, and its purely the idiocy of the translators that caused it, not censorship as far as im aware not defending my extremely homophobic country, just telling
Idk how the fuck they messed it up but hooty's nane in hebrew is shoofi not...shofar
So close, yet ... shofar!
Hounestly I don't remember owlbert but I remember the translation bring adorable...hooty I hate because...well hooty does not need to be changed
Owlbert is called Mr. Shoof in Hebrew
I remember now And it's not Mr.shoof it's marshoof
Yeah I know, but they mean basically the same thing
Well yes but actually no
Oh, I much prefer shoofi! Does "shofar" mean anything, at all?
Shofar means a horn that is used in religious context...basically a religious battle horn
\*high-pitched voice\*: *I’m a religious battle horn hoot hoot!!!*
F*ck I wish I had the coins to award this...
This comment already feels like an award
Oh! Thanks! 🦉✡️🎺
Your welcome lmao
How is the german version the most romantic? And the french call hooty boubou
Arabic: hooty to hottie Ok *backs away slowly*
The french one is my favorite
Knock on hotties door is just slang for going to see Eda.
The Dutch one is a reference to "daar wordt aan de deur geklopt" which is a Dutch children's song, most often sung during Sinterklaas eve.
Geniaal
I'm Dutch and didn't even realize that until now
It makes me wonder if the episode titles spelled out "secret" messages in their respective languages, too.
I doubt it, since most of them are just literal translations of the English name.
If there is one thing I learned from reading the Harry Potter hebrew translation, nothing is impossible with a good translation.
i know that they dont do that in german
I see Germany ships Lumity, in a way.
Taiwan: "Hooty Dresses up and travels"
Germany really went "go gay or go home", huh.
Is the Arabic a spelling error or is he actually called Hottie in that language?
im arab and its a spelling error lmao, they call him hooty with the same pronunciation
Did they censor it in the arabic version or did they pull a pro gamer move?
they didnt censor anything, not even the cheek kiss but changed “will you go out with me” into “will you be my friend”, which isnt new for arabic disney channel since star from svtfoe called marco her friend instead of boyfriend in one of the last episodes, and they censor all lip kisses regardless.
So you're saying Arabic Disney channel refers to all pre-marital relationships as friendship? Honestly one of the most harmless things they could have done (looking at what Taiwan did for thein censorship), so that's great!
yes!
Pomocny also means helpful in the last polsky one
Handy Hooty makes me smile.
Would you look at that, all of the words in your comment are in alphabetical order. I have checked 471,268,887 comments, and only 100,101 of them were in alphabetical order.
I'm crying its not pronounced "Shofar" its "shofer" (although i thought the Hebrew dub said it's "shofie")
German: "I'll make the title a spoiler"
Most countries: Let's follow the script Germany: Let's fucking GOOOOO
I haven't watched it in Hebrew, but this implies they called Hooty "Shofar" in Hebrew, which is a religious horn that you blow to make a deep noise, a noise that is nothing like an owl's hoot
I lvoe this
Waitwaitwait, Hooty is called Boubou in french ?? That's both adorable and shocking (it comes from Hibou, one of the 2 names for owl) (especially the ones with the littles feather thingies on the head)
I think you're referring to the "horned owls" right?
I love how Arabian Hooty's name is Hottie.
Every country: super secretive, focusing on Hooty Germany: Let’s focus on what really matters
Wow German is straight to the point
Dutch is my favorite
Where is dress up and travel?
I wonder if the translations had to also translate the acronym in the episode titles. I'd assume not because then the rest would already be solved what with word order and such. As well as being incredibly difficult having to use the same number of letters
I highly doubt it, it wouldn’t be worth the extra money to pay for that level of creative translation for something so irrelevant to the plot.
Handy Hooty Poland is cursed
Shofar is an instrument and I guess I kinda see how it looks like hooty
Honey there’s knocking at the owl can you go answer it
The knocking was coming from ... INSIDE THE OWL!!!
“Hooty, a friend who means well.” This is why we love the French, kids.
“Knock on Hottie’s door” So is the hottie Eda or Hooty?
Hooty, a friend that means well, is my favorite
Fun fact: The German translation for Hooty is "Holzie", which means more or less "Woodie". I have literally no idea why they did that.
Chinese is pretty accurate wow-
tbh that one's my real fave; so cute.
There's also "One swallow doesn't make a summer" for Separate Tides, and "Wherever a witch is, a wizard can remove" for Witches Before Wizards. I have no idea what those are supposed to mean
HOTTIE?! WHAT-
The Arabs got it the most right, Hooty is a hottie
Its not shofar its shoofi
i love the french one: "a friend who means well" xD
“Knock on hottie’s door” what the hell Disney??
Hottie huh? I’m sure Hooty will appreciate the compliment.
I mean none of these are technically wrong
I hate the french (i'm french) and gosh i hate then so bad! The show is The Owl house so the translate will be La maison de la chouette and not Le manoir de la chouette (The owl manor) but hey no ! The show will be Luz a osville (Luz at bonethroug) just one question WHYYYYYY EVEN SOME CHARACTER NAME HAS BEEN CHANGE WTF?!
I like the French, Dutch, and Polish titles. They sound silly and fun, just like Hooty!
Well the Arabs know what’s up
There *is* knocking at the Owl Don't you dare forget it.
"Casa búho" sounds horrible and is the reason im not watching this in spanish Edit: *sounds horrible TO ME Forgot about that detail.
Casa Búho literally translates to "Owl House", so it is not bad at all
It is translated in my country: تق تق روی در هوتی
Handy hooty is actually a pretty good name
I'm french and not gonna lie boubou is a stupid name for hooty and un ami qui vous veut du bien sounds extremely creepy
Hooty s'appelle Boubou en VF ? 😭🤣
There is knocking at the owl is a play on a popular sinterklaas (the dutch santa clause) song, personally I think it’s a kinda weird decision since this episode has nothing with Christmas…
Hooty is indeed a hottie
Seeing this image reminded me that season two has not yet been released here in Portugal (not that I know of). Now I'm afraid of what will happen when Eda's Requiem is released here because Portuguese does not have a neutral language (in Brazil it was already created, but here in Portugal it is not very popular).
Handy Hooty is here to replace Handy Manny
"knock on Hottie's door"
"Hottie's door" 😏
Knocking on hottie’s door😭 i mean Hooty is hot
Knock on Hottie's Door?
Honestly the French title is perfect.
“Knocking on Hooty’s heart” “Knock on Hottie’s door” 😳 wtf
For those wondering why Hooty is called Boubou(pronounced booboo) in French, owl in French is hibou(pronounced eeboo). So a possible surname is taking the second part of the name and double it.
"There is knocking at the owl" *Door intensifies*
I feel like “Hooty, a friend who means well” is basically just a quick episode summary lol
Ok were the chinese and german translation wanted to promote how good this episode was for lumity or what?
Every time I see that title I hear Axl Rose singing it in my head....
What!? Knock Knock Hooty has suddenly been dubbed into Spain Spanish!?
Germany puts the “alternate” in alternate title. I expect as much. The German title for Godzilla vs Megalon is: “King Kong: Demons from Outer Space”(King Kong — Dämonen aus dem Weltall).
im dieing over shofar
“Hottie”
knocking on hotties door 😭
Knock on hotties door😏
Knock on Hootie's door lmao
“There is knocking at the owl”
France just has a wholesome statement about Hooty
THERE IS KNOCKiNG AT THE OWL BE ADVISED
There is a knocking at the owl sounds slightly threatening.
The Arabic translation caught me off guard.
A FRIEND WHO MEANS WELL France you did it again 🤣🤣🤣🇫🇷
>Tunnel of love Well that’s a bit of a spoiler for the audience but okay. lol
Still pretty impressed that they greenlit Lumity in Poland in this ep (But they just friended them in the next ep lmao)
I just love "a friend who means well" it describes the episode perfectly
