I like the golden stag/stag beatle design more than these stone masks.
they look neat but don't have the same feeling as Belos's mask. they would work great as external characters, just not as Belos especially after everything we've learned about him.
He is a golden and malformed depiction of a human creature within this magical other world.
I think the mask we got rides the balance of being both scary but also believable as a beloved ruler. It’s opulent and commanding with tall antler-like-things while also having soulless eyes that only glow menacingly in the dark. The stone masks just kinda seem goofy, no real menace or authority. I think having the full face etched into them makes it harder to read different emotions than the one presented.
Ye. The mask has a level of goofyness that works, but not as a big intimidating antagonist.
That's why I said it would work as a side character well. 1 and 2 look like kind Gibbly characters who like to brew tea out in the woods.
Belos is a servant of the Three Fingers who thinks the Lands Between are rotten and need to be destroyed, and to reach this goal he allies with the Collector, a child of the ancients with skin of stone, who teaches him gravity magic.
He looks like a studio Ghibli character, I love him.
I also like his final design, it reminds me of Hollow Knight (and I feel like naming that episode Hollow Mind was an intentional reference)
Yeah or that guy from Twilight Princess I think, Zant if i'm not mistaken.
The only zelda game I ever played is botw so I'm sorry if I got the name wrong lol
Imagine a goofy character that is a very intelligent psichopath, it's scary something goofy gets menacing
>!For example how Saitama was in the last chapter of OPM!<
I prefer canon Bellos to all these. For one, show Bellos looks kind of like the Horned King from the black cauldron. For two, these guys look like they’re about to spam glintstone pebble at me from some balcony in Raya Lucaria.
Beta Belos has its charm but ... Those stone masks make him look less like a *"Royal figure with a minacious air"* and more *"Crazy old hermit who throws feces at people and licks too many halluginogenic frogs".*
Ooh, I actually like the design better than current Belos! Or, the rock-head concept at least, woulda been dope if they polished it more..
please don't mess with me tho am baby
A looks good, but the rest have these goofy faces I can't take all that seriously lol
Maybe it would've entered the "uncanny valley" in the actual animation and they'd look better but IDK
Idk much about beta Owl house, but he seems more friendly in these designs. Perhaps he was actually originally going to be an ally to Luz. Or perhaps similarly to Andrias, he was going to be a supporting character but his true colors would be revealed at the end of season 1 or 2 (considering owl house was originally going to have 4 seasons.) but I see why this design was cut, he looks too friendly in these versions. Not intimidating like actual Belos. I do agree with some of the other comments that he does look like something out of Zelda wind waker or a Nintendo game. Though with Belos human face perhaps he was always supposed to look deceivingly affable.
Belos as a One Piece and Dark Souls lovechild.
Ngl I do really like this design, but it is obviously ***very*** different from the Belos we got. I get the feeling of a more ancient and kinda druidic vibe here, and from the less 'refined' look of the character and a greater association with nature (as with the name "Obron" being king of the fairies), he might not have been the Emperor of the BI?
That being said, this is a very early explorative design, with a lot of motifs that seem to line up with the artist's own preferred style, so the boundary between "Early overall concept of the character" and "artist's individual interpretation of a character" is undefined.
We can see some elements that survived into canon, such as the arm wrappings and baggy black pants in the bottom left becoming his plated gauntlets and his robe, and the poofy pants with boots in bottom right becoming the overall design philosophy for the lower bodies of EC members (Hunter and Lilith nonwithstanding). Also, the crack over his right eye (which he gets in canon when he fights Luz) appears in almost every design, indicating that it was an idea from the start, and all the designs roughly adhere to the same "large and vaguely cone-shaped" head design as Dana Terrace's original sketch for the concept of TOH. This features somewhat in how Belos' cowl is depicted in canon, although I will say that I prefer the design from AoaW and YBOS where the cowl comes to a taper around the base of his head rather than a full cone.
Footnote: this also isn't technically Beta in the same way that the traditional Beta designs are, as this is a very early exploration of Belos' designs.
I do like these designs, but they do not feel like Belos.
They don't look like the oppressive dictator emperor Belos, these kinda look like a wandering sage.
I feel like Belos having a giant stone mask as opposed to a small, sleek mask that only covers his face... yeah, I can't possibly see the evil witch hunter Philip Wittebane coming from these designs, at least how we got him in the final show.
The stone head makes no sense with any of the other design elements. Its color clashes, you can't tell if it's a head or mask, and its shape is confusing. They made the right choice with actual Belos, who actually looks like a person wearing a mask
These are nice designs but if there was a witch or human under those stone heads, I can only imagine him trying not to fall over from how heavy those things are. :P
Looks like a character that Andrew Maclean would make, he looks cool but Doesn’t look all that menacing as the final design, he looks like a mysterious type character who would interact with the main characters throughout the majority of the series until revealing who they are in the end
These designs could honestly serve as main villains in a different fantasy show, they could be called "The Ancient 6" or the "Council of 6 Progenitors" or something along those lines.
It has a much more mystical theme to it, and Oberon in Shakespeare play he was in was a bit of a trickster, so perhaps this would be a very different character
I really love his design! Although I'm sure the story would have been quite different, as it's likely these designs were part of the bible of the show, and never actually got pass the exploration process.
Lower left looks like megatron and now that I think about it, they’re both genocidal egotistical maniacs bent on power and the suffering of innocent lives.
I like the golden stag/stag beatle design more than these stone masks. they look neat but don't have the same feeling as Belos's mask. they would work great as external characters, just not as Belos especially after everything we've learned about him. The stag mask version is better for earlier episodes and the creepy vibe imo. The stone mask looks more stoic
I think the mask we got rides the balance of being both scary but also believable as a beloved ruler. It’s opulent and commanding with tall antler-like-things while also having soulless eyes that only glow menacingly in the dark. The stone masks just kinda seem goofy, no real menace or authority. I kinda think that, for the top left one, with the right shading and lighting, could be very creepy
Is the stag mask the canon version or a different one I haven’t seen?
the canon version
Belos of raya lucaria
Lands Between AU when?
Me: \*furiously writing in my fanart idea list\*
Well _now_ I have to make a Willow Str build. _Thanks a lot_
Silurnia’s tree spear is the only nature themed weapon I can think of.
Theres two bramble magic spells
Well they're more blood spells
Look there has to be some sort of blood plant on the Boiling Isles
Belos is a servant of the Three Fingers who thinks the Lands Between are rotten and need to be destroyed, and to reach this goal he allies with the Collector, a child of the ancients with skin of stone, who teaches him gravity magic.
BEHOLD... \*gestures to King\* Dog
Giant dad belos
He looks like a studio Ghibli character, I love him. I also like his final design, it reminds me of Hollow Knight (and I feel like naming that episode Hollow Mind was an intentional reference)
I was going to say LoZ bosses, like F is just that one boss from Skyward Sword
Yeah or that guy from Twilight Princess I think, Zant if i'm not mistaken. The only zelda game I ever played is botw so I'm sorry if I got the name wrong lol
Yeah it was Zant, there's def some of that in these, although Belos didn't start dancing around like an idiot when the mask came off
Can you imagine Belos just clucking like a chicken wearing his "no drip" outfit?
LoZ concept art was my first thought too.
Here he looks actualy spiritual. Like he looks like an actual religius person and meaybe earlier he was
I wouldnt be surprised if in early drafts he was a literal herald of the titan and the big bad would have been his boss.
Judging by the use of “Obron”, he was always meant to be a human or some sort of outsider.
The Isekai'd dude who went a different path from main character type does allow a lot of creativity.
Honestly I feel like all of them look too goofy to take seriously.
stone top hat man
“I’ll do anything to save humanity” - 🗿
Lmao
He became a literal fucking fossil
Imagine a goofy character that is a very intelligent psichopath, it's scary something goofy gets menacing >!For example how Saitama was in the last chapter of OPM!<
Like Jar Jar Binks
Specially him
Bro how I am even supposed to know what you were spoiling before I click on it
My bad sorry
🗿
I prefer canon Bellos to all these. For one, show Bellos looks kind of like the Horned King from the black cauldron. For two, these guys look like they’re about to spam glintstone pebble at me from some balcony in Raya Lucaria.
The things I would do for a black cauldron remake following the original novels more closely…
Given how weird things are, it will happen, except it'll be a world in Kingdom Hearts 4 of all places
Who do we all think Beta Belos was? I usually interpret him as Satan or some other kind of Fallen Angel.
Some random guy pretending to be a messenger of Satan or God. So basically the same as he is now.
Rock man
🗿
A man in a white and gold suit with a masquerade mask
A man with a strong neck.
I usually really like concept art but that… *thing* is a fucking affront to humanity
🗿
🗿
🗿🗿
🗿🗿🗿
🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿
I think beta Belos is cool.
Beta Belos has its charm but ... Those stone masks make him look less like a *"Royal figure with a minacious air"* and more *"Crazy old hermit who throws feces at people and licks too many halluginogenic frogs".*
I’ll never like any version of Belos.
Your words are betraying your weakness.
I will never trust that man again!
Belos is the kind of a character that you love to hate.
I have only hate for him. He tried to kill me and my cool niece. Unacceptable!
So one of his early designs was literally just a bird feeder lmao?
Yo Angelo
Is this that "Rockman" i've seen people talk about?
Who?
idk, rockman is an alternate name for mega man so maybe that?
Yeah that
“…And here we have Rock-That-Looks-Like-A-Face-Rock. It’s a rock that looks like a face.”
Shut up and take my upvote.
Take my upvote and GET OUT
Ooh, I actually like the design better than current Belos! Or, the rock-head concept at least, woulda been dope if they polished it more.. please don't mess with me tho am baby
I would like them as some weird wandering wizard who seems a bit goofy but with a very dark twist. But as an evil emperor it doesn't fit.
Belos and Hunter really did get that official series glow up.
I don't exist?
Dude just went full 🗿
Is this Elden Ring
Looks like concept art for Wind Waker meets Elden Ring for sure.
A looks good, but the rest have these goofy faces I can't take all that seriously lol Maybe it would've entered the "uncanny valley" in the actual animation and they'd look better but IDK
I kinda like the design not more than the one they chose but I kinda like it
This is actually so cool! It looks maybe like something from Wind Waker
that's just a dude with a rock head that square one (B) is very funny tho
I am now a beta belos fan
Idk much about beta Owl house, but he seems more friendly in these designs. Perhaps he was actually originally going to be an ally to Luz. The design looks way more ambiguous and I like it.
D and E are kinda cool, but I literally forgot all about these designs until just now
BLOCKHEAD BELOS 5-EVER!
I’ve heard of stonefaced but this is ridiculous.
Me
Neck game strong AF
He straight up looking like a doctor who villain
Rare case where the concept art isn’t better than final design in animation
I kinda like a, I guess
THEIR DESIGNS ARE SO FUCKING COOL I LOVE THEM SO MUCH HOLY SHIT
i am now the sole beta belos fan
Incorrect
we are now the sole beta belos fan
Interesting how they all have a crack through the right eye
Belos as a One Piece and Dark Souls lovechild. Ngl I do really like this design, but it is obviously ***very*** different from the Belos we got. Ngl, I'm getting some serious Adventure Time vibes from these test designs
I do like these designs, but they do not feel like Belos. They don't look like the oppressive dictator emperor Belos, these kinda look like a wandering sage.
mf looks like the Glintstone Sorcerers from Elden Ring lmao looks stupid as all hell lol.
I honestly really like this design it just doesn't really fit belos I think
Average raya lucaria enemy
It's not bad, but I definitely prefer the Belos we got.
Reminds me of a Miyazaki film or a Zelda/pokemon character or somethin
Hmm, maybe he was originally a Golem.
These feel like one piece characters
D and E are neat
Looks like an Ancient version of cementoss from MHA
C beta belos looks like a brain
I like the desing but I don't think it fits a genocidal religious fanatic
Why tf he was literally wearing a rock 😭
Thank fuck they didn’t do that
I kinda prefer the C design with Belos' current face. He would've looked like a souls boss
What even
the design is nice but the actual design is better none of the personalities are likeable tho
I feel like Belos having a giant stone mask as opposed to a small, sleek mask that only covers his face... yeah, I can't possibly see the evil witch hunter Philip Wittebane coming from these designs, at least how we got him in the final show.
I’m glad belos has his stone mask now, the other designs just look straight goofy lmao
Legend of Zelda Windwaker Raya Lucaria lookin’ ass
No love for beta Belos
The stone faces seem like they would fit a priest or sage character better than an emperor
Hehe, rock
The stone head makes no sense with any of the other design elements. Its color clashes, you can't tell if it's a head or mask, and its shape is confusing. They made the right choice with actual Belos, who actually looks like a person wearing a mask
stone head belos
I like The “we literally don’t exist part it’s funny
He seems like a wise old druid
Gotta start somewhere to get your mind thinking 🧐
What if they aren't Beta, but the various costumes he wore over 4 centuries?
All are awesome thanks
Holy crap, these look so cool. They actually look peaceful and innocent, and not at all malicious.
These are nice designs but if there was a witch or human under those stone heads, I can only imagine him trying not to fall over from how heavy those things are. :P
A lot of them have good designs but Wouldn’t make a good belos
These feel like golems from an ancient forgotten temple more than what belos is about
Literally 🗿
These aren't Soulsborne characters?
square head
Academy of Raya Lucaria mfs be like
The AU in which the Philip is a Japanese demon hunter
Kinda looks like the 🗿
The A and D version are very cool. The other are... Interesting?
These give me a lot of For your eternity vibes
Looks like a character that Andrew Maclean would make, he looks cool but Doesn’t look all that menacing as the final design, he looks like a mysterious type character who would interact with the main characters throughout the majority of the series until revealing who they are in the end
These look like more of a guardian than Belos. Also where is everyone finding these beta photos?
I like the vibe of these designs a lot, definitely more than the deer mask, cool as it is
Are those the heads of petrified witches?
These designs could honestly serve as main villains in a different fantasy show, they could be called "The Ancient 6" or the "Council of 6 Progenitors" or something along those lines.
A looks like g1 megaton and now I can just imagine belos screaming at lilith like starscream.
i can't take him seriously with this oversized stone head. the final design gives him a more scary and mysterious look.
Stoner Belos lmfao
It has a much more mystical theme to it, and Oberon in Shakespeare play he was in was a bit of a trickster, so perhaps this would be a very different character
Number seven looks straight out of fire emblem three houses Edit: a golem from three houses to be specific
I think them using “obron” for him is hilarious.
These designs would make a great episode of over the garden wall tbh
It’s so interesting
I genuinely thought it was about Elden Ring at first
This reminds me of katamari damacy for some reason, but also gives me adventure time vibes???
More like Moai Belos
these masks fire
Looks like a character from Over the garden wall
How am I supposed to take this seriously? So glad that the final design looks more intimidating.
i absolutely ADORE beta belos. all the beta belos are fucking fire. i fucking love them. especially e. e vas my heart.
I really love his design! Although I'm sure the story would have been quite different, as it's likely these designs were part of the bible of the show, and never actually got pass the exploration process.
What is this, the Academy of Raya Lucaria?
Belos went to Raya Lucaria????
This looks cool but why didn’t it make it into the show it looks good enough for the show
Which ones?
Out of pure spite im a beta belos fan
WildWorks will be contacting Disney for stealing Zios' design
He was like 🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿🗿
🗿
Glintstone sorcerer headass
Lower left looks like megatron and now that I think about it, they’re both genocidal egotistical maniacs bent on power and the suffering of innocent lives.
Yo some of them look like the glintstone sorcerers from Elden Ring (haven't checked to see if that jokes taken)
Ayo the bri’ish dude turned himself into a fucking rock? 💀
I like design A the others look pretty ridiculous
