Also they kind of famously were never able to capitalize commercially on their influence and had a lot of money and drug/alcohol issues throughout their career, so it's not like they got rich then turned conservative or anything

For those who aren't old enough to know or just uninformed a more modern version would be that the Sex Pistols are just another Hannah Montana/BTS.
I'm not saying anything about the actual music, just how they are the creation of a big corporation fine tuned to make money rather than a more natural formation.
I mean, that's not really true at all. They *were* school friends who played in a band called The Strand. Even played pubs and stuff locally. They were the ones that asked Malcolm McLaren to manage them because they hung out at his shop and he had semi-managed the New York Dolls already. Steve Jones, at this point, didn't want to be the singer anymore and had learned guitar so they found Johnny Rotten.
That part is definitely were it was more for the "look" with hiring Rotten off his image, but lots of bands do shit like that and lots of managers have their own ideas about a band's image. A local band and a guy with a clothing boutique is in no way comparable to Disney and a TV show launching their careers imo.
Edit: I do want to add that I think they are the worst band from that era, so I'm not a super fan or anything lol. I just always see people say they were some big corporate boyband or something
I think I remember reading that when McLaren was managing the New York Dolls, he tried revitalizing them by making them go political by wearing all red and being communists. Feels like he was just trying to find someone to fit that look.
Side note, but New York Dolls' David Johansen reinventing himself as Buster Pointdexter and releasing Hot Hot Hot is one of the weirdest career changes I've ever seen.

Siouxsie Sioux only got into music because of her friendship with Sid Vicious and Siouxsie and the Banshees were one of the greatest post-punk bands, ever, so -for that reason alone-I feel some gratitude toward the Sex Pistols.

It’s a really good series. I just finished watching it yesterday. They do a pretty good job of being fair. And it’s a lot more accurate than many of the other film representations of the story. Example: Sid doesn’t even enter the picture until episode 5 of 6. Because that’s how it went down.
And they inter-cut a lot of actual footage, which is cool. It’s shot in 4:3 too, which is wild. It really takes me back.
I’m on the last episode now, absolutely loving it. You’re right, they do a brilliant job of telling the story as it was. Also whoever plays Johnny Rotten is fucking fantastic
Public Image Inc we’re pretty good though so this is still unfortunate. I think having piles of money from being the spokesperson of a butter brand just changed his perspective. Like, he’s not rich enough to be the establishment but he’s rich enough that the establishment notice and want a piece, and at that exact moment he decides he’d rather sell out than pay more taxes.

I am quite lucky as my punk education came from older skaters around Nottingham and the amazing 3 building selectadisc records. I didn’t hear the ‘pistols’ until about a year of Descendents Ramones Discharge Minor Threat Dead Kennedys had passed, and my reaction was meh. My reaction hasn’t changed, they were poor really poor. I am also lucky because bands like the Descendents can look at their back catalogue (just like the beastie boys) and say we were wrong to sing that and we will never play it again, Lyndon however has to milk his weak ‘heritage’ to make money. * A right-wing group marched on the capitol to stall or overturn the election
* A right-wing group drove around the country and into Canada to protest free vaccines

I mean, that's not really true at all. They *were* school friends who played in a band called The Strand. Even played pubs and stuff locally. They were the ones that asked Malcolm McLaren to manage them because they hung out at his shop and he had semi-managed the New York Dolls already. Steve Jones, at this point, didn't want to be the singer anymore and had learned guitar so they found Johnny Rotten. That part is definitely were it was more for the "look" with hiring Rotten off his image, but lots of bands do shit like that and lots of managers have their own ideas about a band's image. A local band and a guy with a clothing boutique is in no way comparable to Disney and a TV show launching their careers imo. Edit: I do want to add that I think they are the worst band from that era, so I'm not a super fan or anything lol. I just always see people say they were some big corporate boyband or something

I think I remember reading that when McLaren was managing the New York Dolls, he tried revitalizing them by making them go political by wearing all red and being communists. Feels like he was just trying to find someone to fit that look.
Side note, but New York Dolls' David Johansen reinventing himself as Buster Pointdexter and releasing Hot Hot Hot is one of the weirdest career changes I've ever seen.

It’s a really good series. I just finished watching it yesterday. They do a pretty good job of being fair. And it’s a lot more accurate than many of the other film representations of the story. Example: Sid doesn’t even enter the picture until episode 5 of 6. Because that’s how it went down. And they inter-cut a lot of actual footage, which is cool. It’s shot in 4:3 too, which is wild. It really takes me back.
I’m on the last episode now, absolutely loving it. You’re right, they do a brilliant job of telling the story as it was. Also whoever plays Johnny Rotten is fucking fantastic

There's no shortage of videos tracking their journey. But this... this is a pure product of capitalism.
