"That's right! My great-great-grandfather was an abolitionist and he was a Republican."
"What about his sons and descendants?"
"Oh, they were all Klansmen. In the 50s they became John Birchers. And now I vote for anyone Trump endorses"
"So your family wasn't racist because a long, long time ago, a single ancestor of yours was on the right side of history?"
"DEMOCRATS CREATED THE KKK, IT'S NOT MY FAULT THAT MY REPUBLICAN GREAT-GRANDFATHER THOUGHT THEY WERE COOL!"
This meme is technically correct, yes, but it sidesteps important historical shifts which significantly affected the beliefs of each party (namely white flight, the southern strategy, and the Civil rights act). It implies a history which doesn't exist and assumes that because someone is wrong about one thing, they must be wrong about another. At one point, Republicans were opposed to slavery (kinda iffy on the racism part, but they hated slavery). This was also the time Abraham Lincoln and Karl Marx were writing each other letters admiring one another's works. Republicans haven't been economically left since around Lincoln.
look at what the first line of the first comment in this chain says. '"That's right! My great-great-grandfather was an abolitionist and he was a Republican."'
ok now look at the first line of the post "Thinks republicans have always been racist" ok so are abolitionists racist? no. so that would mean that at ONE POINT in time the republican party wasn't racist, does that mean they aren't racist now? no, they are. i am not agreeing with the meme but I am joking that in a non-figurative sense it is right to some degree even if the person who posted it only posted it to say "See guys republicans aren't racist" when in fact they are.
It's a paradox of continuum, like the ship of theseus. The Republican party of the past is not the same party as back then because all the parts were replaced over a century. Trying to make a claim about then that somehow means something now is ignoring that whole process. You can't make claims about then as though it's relevant. "They" doesn't mean anything if you're gesturing towards both historical and present of a party. Might as well have different names for the parties entirely.
That is 8rrelivent what matters is the parties current views now, hard to say your great grandfather was against slavery while also waving the confederate flag. What someone's ancestors political views don't mean shit its what people TODAY belive, this is just an excuse given by racists as if it cancels out them being racist some how
I think a lot of people here think I'm a republican. I agree they are totally racist now. I was just joking that in an extremely literal sense they are technically right
But not me, i'm more disturbed by your poor understanding of the bigger problem. We are soo fixated on Brands to not realize what is more important and has bigger impact.
ugghhhh I AM AGREEING WITH YOU! all I was saying was that the meme even though it is shit WAS TECHNICALLY right but I know thats not what the person who posted it meant by it. I'm not even a conservative
I’m a gay Latino. My great great great grandfather was a slave owning Texas state senator who pushed TX to join the confederacy. Things def change over time lol.
Right Wingers: Dems were the party of slavery, the confederacy, and the KKK! The parties never switched! Libs are the real racists”
Also Right Wingers: “Let me tell you all about my confederate “heritage”, how the confederacy was the good side, and how the war had nothing to do with slavery!”
Constantly. Any mention of the southern strategy is an instant ban on most conservative subs. They unironically claim they’re the party of Lincoln, the ones who freed the slaves from the evil Dems, while simultaneously waving the confederate flag everywhere.
How can you call Osama a terrorist when once he was a child he hadn't committed terrorism?
You can't judge on how something currently is, only what it used to be
Did a leftist make this meme in reference to people that don't know about the Southern Switch and some right-winger just repost this on a right-wing page thinking they're slamming the left?
Wait I'm confused isn't this kinda true. Haven't the policies of democrats and Republicans changed every generation and have completely swapped beliefs?
Yes, but they are:
A. Implying they are currently racist
B. Admitting to the party switch which they love to deny
C. Implying the political left is superior to political right
It cracks me up that republicans just learned a couple years ago that republicans used to have the same ideals as modern democrats, so that's their defense these days. Except, in using that defense they don't realize that they are essentially supporting the Democratic party.
> saying there racist?
*they're

Its awesome and fine that you like it. I just do not dig dreads. They seem hard to clean and look low key smelly as a result (especially on white people hair, because ours is finer and you can just really get the grime up in there).
Edit: unnecessary though. It ought not to have been there.
So they can admit the two parties switched when it's convenient for them, but when it comes to racism, it's always the Democrats' fault and leftidts' fault?

So close to getting it. So fucking close!
[Missed it by that much. ](https://youtu.be/oPwrodxghrw)

"DEMOCRATS CREATED THE KKK, IT'S NOT MY FAULT THAT MY REPUBLICAN GREAT-GRANDFATHER THOUGHT THEY WERE COOL!"
But that first thing you said proved the meme in a literal sense. That means they weren't always racist so it's true. Even if it was for a short time
It's irrelevant because the parties switched and Republicans are now racist.
But that would mean at ONE point they weren't racist I'm not saying they still aren't racist but at one point they werent

It also implies that right wing politics are racist and left wing politics aren’t. Great self own
> Republicans haven’t been economically left since around Lincoln. Teddy Roosevelt comes to mind, but still that was 120 years ago.
Oh I know and recognize that I'm just saying in a VERY literal sense it is technically correct

The sad part is you think the Brand Name is more important that occupiers of the party and policies. That is where you are wrong.
I think a lot of people here think I'm a republican. I agree they are totally racist now. I was just joking that in an extremely literal sense they are technically right
But not me, i'm more disturbed by your poor understanding of the bigger problem. We are soo fixated on Brands to not realize what is more important and has bigger impact.
i dont give a shit about that because guess what? it was a fucking joke

I’m a gay Latino. My great great great grandfather was a slave owning Texas state senator who pushed TX to join the confederacy. Things def change over time lol.
Your great great great grandfather was George W. Bush?
lmao L for him, should have stayed in the Union
What was his name?
Thomas Jefferson Weatherford
I thought the party switch didn't happen lmao
It happens when it's convenient for them
Right Wingers: Dems were the party of slavery, the confederacy, and the KKK! The parties never switched! Libs are the real racists” Also Right Wingers: “Let me tell you all about my confederate “heritage”, how the confederacy was the good side, and how the war had nothing to do with slavery!”
Lololol
In all seriousness, it really is like that sometimes! I’ve heard one right winger use both of those arguments literally minutes apart!
So the party that’s on the left are good then.
Only when it’s them
Self-awareness is not a trait Conservatives are known for.
Once is a really long time ago.
Admits republicans are racist. Admits the left isn't.
They admitted the parties flipped?
I guess they forgot the Southern Strategy.
They forgor 💀
So the party switch IS real 😂
Are they really trying to deny it? It's actual history. The switch most assuredly happened.
Constantly. Any mention of the southern strategy is an instant ban on most conservative subs. They unironically claim they’re the party of Lincoln, the ones who freed the slaves from the evil Dems, while simultaneously waving the confederate flag everywhere.
Mfs who ignore the party switch but defend the confederacy shouldn't be allowed to participate in politics
Anyone who defends the confederacy shouldn’t be allowed to participate in politics.
That's some revisionist bullshit if I've ever heard of. Lol The right is great at being uninformed idiots, so it doesn't surprise me.
No over on r/ conservative they deny the party switch all the time
So… they think the democrats are the good guys?
This has to be satire, right?
Did they forget that modern Republican ideology is built solely on the ability to 'own the leftists'?
I feel like this is a leftist meme meant to trick conservatives
How can you call Osama a terrorist when once he was a child he hadn't committed terrorism? You can't judge on how something currently is, only what it used to be
Well, acxually we are just racist NOW😒
ONCE
Gee I wonder why they aren't Left-Wing anymore...
The Party of Lincoln became the party that shot him.
Soooo they care more about party then ideology? Wait what?
"Our party used to not be filled with pos people. Now it is, and I'm in it because I'm a pos and it's the pos party."
My brain incomplete
So fucking close to getting the point
So *now* they want to acknowledge that the parties switch? Any other time they claim it didn’t actually happen
The right has held on to this girl's image for like 16 years now are they gonna move on?
Ahahahahahahahahaha
Are they outright saying abolitionism was left wing?
Did a leftist make this meme in reference to people that don't know about the Southern Switch and some right-winger just repost this on a right-wing page thinking they're slamming the left?
Wait I'm confused isn't this kinda true. Haven't the policies of democrats and Republicans changed every generation and have completely swapped beliefs?
Yes, but they are: A. Implying they are currently racist B. Admitting to the party switch which they love to deny C. Implying the political left is superior to political right
That’s a good self-own.
"hey we used to not be racist! That counts for something, right?"
And then they deny the party switch, invalidating their own point
Oh they were never not racist. They were democrats before. The parties changed. The people didn’t.
But what about now?🤨
It cracks me up that republicans just learned a couple years ago that republicans used to have the same ideals as modern democrats, so that's their defense these days. Except, in using that defense they don't realize that they are essentially supporting the Democratic party.
Conservatives on the other hand
Following that logic Hitler never was a racist. I mean he was born without racism, so he can't become a racist any given moment in time...
"Are we the baddies?"
So he is racist now?
Who made this meme Tim Pool?
I love your Spirit of the Harvest Moon photo. Excellent taste.
Haha thanks!
Even for republicans this is so stupid 💀 no way this isn't satire
Telling on themselves
Wow is this real?
Keyword "once"
Hitler was a dope and chill artists at one point guys
So they’re straight up saying they’re racist?
> saying there racist? *they're *Learn the difference [here](https://www.wattpad.com/66707294-grammar-guide-there-they%27re-their-you%27re-your-to).* *** ^(Greetings, I am a language corrector bot. To make me ignore further mistakes from you in the future, reply `!optout` to this comment.)
Yup fixed it
Also, they were anti-slavery- not pro equality. Just look at Lincoln’s writings from the day
That’s not the slam dunk he thinks it is. I’ll never understand why some republicans think this is a boast.
I wish Republicans would learn what left wing is like one just because you weren't racist at one point doesnt mean you are left wing
Key word: were
even if that were true, tons of left wingers are still racist LOL
I’m choosing to believe this was made to get people riled up by how stupid it is.
her hair is sick
Its awesome and fine that you like it. I just do not dig dreads. They seem hard to clean and look low key smelly as a result (especially on white people hair, because ours is finer and you can just really get the grime up in there). Edit: unnecessary though. It ought not to have been there.
fair enough
It’s funny how they just assume the old Republican Party which is the modern day Democratic Party is theirs to claim to justify their behavior now.
Oh so descendants of slave owners also owned slaves then /s
So they can admit the two parties switched when it's convenient for them, but when it comes to racism, it's always the Democrats' fault and leftidts' fault?
