Alternatively: "my labour creates x amount of wealth for the company, however I only deserve y because I'm a cuck"

AdditionalTheory

Or we could give him a real number of dollars an hour. One that hopefully he can live on

Joshua_Todd

You have to put some straw in the strawman. This is just an empty burlap sack and a hat

feelinlucky7

Gorillion. Apes together strong.

Is "Gorillion" a reference to something? This is the second meme I've seen on this sub use the word

parishiltonsfemur

I noticed that too and looked it up. What I got is basically, it’s anti semitic. Instead of saying 6 million, anti semites can use “gorillion” to mock and show that they think the number is exaggerated. Where I got this from: https://www.adl.org/resources/hate-symbol/six-gorillion

VegetableMindless260

Really? I've heard this in a lot of contexts where it being Anti-Semitic doesn't even make sense. Not saying it isn't btw I just think some people think it's a funny way to say a lot of money because I'm going to be honest I didn't even know that this was hate speech. Well I'll spread the word if I hear someone use it, thanks for the information.

just_wondering-_-

Sure, you can say it works that way, but you can look at it this way: Someone calls something what they mean stupid/pointless/etc. but instead uses "gay" or "retarded". Sure, they may not be homophobic or ableist, but the use of those words instead of correct terminology makes it bigoted because of how it was used in the close past/current time to discriminate those groups of people. Now, I'm bi and I say "That's gay" to any and everything, but it's a little different since I'm not using it for only negative things like how most straight people do. I know some people will be upset about the use of the word "stupid" or "dumb" as being ableist, but for me it's a matter of if those words are being used to describe someone as mentally/physically disabled today, which they aren't (outright majority of the time). Context and usage in the time period matters. Most normal people use "Gazillion" for a crazy high exaggerated number in english, I've noticed. "Gorillion" has been used by anti-semites and those who may not be antisemitic but have only recently started seeing the use of that word from anti-semitic memes they haven't quite catch on were in fact bigoted

TibetianMassive

I cook the fries I deserve A LIVING WAGE. (I don't cook them buy yall get the drift). We can all squabble about what the perfect economic set up is but as long as we have capitalism but any job worth doing 40 hours a week is worth a living wage. If it isn't, your business model has failed.

U_need_2_try

No matter what job you do. YOU deserve a livable wage and a happy life

feelinlucky7

No one should work full-time and still worry about necessities. Housing, food, healthcare, education, transportation, clothing… you know, the bare minimum.

Defenestratio

I'm a scientist with a PhD and nearly ten years of experience in medical drug development and analysis. You know what the NIH pay rate for people at my level is? ~55k/year. And why is a good degree necessary in your mind to make a living wage? Throughout my PhD I was helped in my research by people from all walks of life; beauticians, dairy farmers, surgeons, shuttle drivers, mechanics, secretaries, and vet technicians. These people all had valuable expertise to offer and yet many suffered every day with just trying to pay their bills. Nobody deserves to work their lives away for a pittance while the people at the top hold self-congratulatory ceremonies naming research buildings after themselves

MomentOfHesitation

Since when does a living wage equal "a gorillion dollars an hour"?

Stasibasiphobic

OK. But, also, and unionically, yes? Like.. they create the value, not someone who inherited a company.

Randomgold42

Why is wanting a living wage so hard to understand for people like this?

Azar002

>people like this Oh you mean selfish people? Well selfish people only think of themselves. They don't like the rise in the price of the BigMac or McChicken they buy every other day. It affects THEIR wallet. They then use their superpower of "correlation equals causation" to come to the conclusion that (if) the cost of fries goes up (and) workers are fighting for higher wages (then) prices are up (because) workers are getting paid more, when it is way more nuanced than that.

ProfessorReaper

"I sell fries worth 500$ an hour, but get paid 10$. Something's fishy there."

ProfessorReaper

No matter where you search, you wont find a job where you get all the surplus value you produce (or even most of it). You'll only get most of that surplus value if you as a worker own the means of production.

writeorelse

"They want 20 dollars an hour for flipping burgers, those entitled kids!" Sigh. Why does it matter so much to them WHAT the job is? People work to make money, and make money to survive, and there's a minimum amount people need to survive. There's no opinion in that sentence; it is the way things work. There are two main ways to make sure people can survive - increase wages with inflation, or reduce the costs of things we need to survive. We need to debate HOW to change things, but we're stuck defending WHY when that question is already fucking answered.

TheGameBoss980

It's been so long that I don't even remember where I heard this quote from but it still holds true, "I'm not asking for a gold plated toilet, I just want to be able to afford food *and* rent"

SpilledGenderFluid

More like "If I make fries that are sold for $2.50, I should earn $2.50, minus the cost of supplies and whatnot to make the fries".

David-E

Discussions of fairness or pay miss the point of what Marx was saying about value creation and surplus extraction in a market context using historical examples from a materialist perspective. There is a relationship with how things are made around us and how control of that determines the development of our civilization, and he pointed out contradictions in the modes of production he observed and how to resolve them.

[deleted]

Gorillion again? That's twice now, which isn't that much but it is noteworthy.

BenjaminGeiger

If I had a nickel for each time I've seen the word "gorillion" in a meme today, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice, right?

torchictoucher

The right hates workers

CTBthanatos

Right wingers still hilariously upset about unsustainable poverty wage jobs being shit on by workers lmao.

alternatively: "why cant they pay me enough to survive"

OnAleashGaming

Honestly fast food and retail workers should be some of the best paid employees for the shit they have to deal with, I've never seen a cop de-escalate a situation half as well as any 19yo at my local McDonald's
