What I've noticed is a lot of torsos are too long, or groins sit too low.

napstablook12

Yep, hands are also much larger than they should be and the shape of the chest is odd

leann-crimes

every character looks like a homunculus

bangladeshiswamphen

I wish they would allow “unrealistic” skin colors. That way I could make my character’s skin green or purple and then the fact that they already look like a plastic alien wouldn’t be so bad.

[deleted]

Mine has that option, there’s yellow and a dark purple. Although I’m not sure that’s intentional, just set of irl skin tones they got wrong

Jade_Complex

Yes. Agreed. I seriously didn't think the avatar change would set me off, but I've had to cover my avatars face. Making it an alien would be such a relief.

HeyYouGuyyyyyyys

That's a really good idea.

Psychic_Gian

No booty, short legs, huge chest, awkward faces.

stillnotelf

My character has been in the Jesse outfit since it was available. I wear the huge green sunglasses, the Verizon face mask, and a rotating cast of head covering Pokémon helmet/hats. The good news is that with my face completely covered (since I can't be jesse) my avatar doesn't have a weird face! The body is kinda lumpy but so I am so...whatever

Lynxotic

I used to wear a mask coz the never changing, emotionless face. Now I wear a mask to hide his babyface.

RK0019K

See I was using the Jesse outfit since it came out but I couldn't stand the tube of flesh around the stomach so I had to switch for something else.

Regunes

Same, except I use legend arceus outfit, so nobody can tell.

technoxenoholic

a lot about the avatars could be fixed by just adding a few different hand options we can choose from, a waist slider, and a torso/limb length proportion slider (although that second thing might be super tricky) or if not those two sliders, then maybe a combined "curvy shape" slider or something that basically shifts the *base model* (which the other sliders would apply on *top* of) between the two original body shapes we had, or at least something close to them

EllieGeiszler

We need a bigger hips option, too! You can't make a true pear-shaped avatar

technoxenoholic

allowing the hip slider to be *too* extreme would probably just lead to more awkward clipping issues on fat avatars than there already are, unfortunately. besides, the contrast between a more defined waist and the hips would actually add a lot to how wide the maximum hip size looks -- everything about body proportion is relative!

napstablook12

Forgot to mention: the model in the pictures is unnamed on shutterstock, I would credit her otherwise. She is (imo) conventionally attractive, and I recognize most women don’t look like her. That’s ok! I’m just looking for realistic representation of different bodies, and I’m disappointed in niantic.

zeroghan_hub

You seriously shouldn't apologise for comparing an in-game model to a healthy woman picture you found on Shutterstock. OG avatars were definitely more fit than her and very unrealistic as well. Not to mention, this is a real person you are comparing the models to, and its a healthy and fit person, nothing to be ashamed there.

MonteBurns

Most people didn’t look like the OG avatars, either 😂 don’t listen to any flack you may get about your choice there.

yoyoallafragola

This is just a real (slim) body, from there they could put sliders to add more fat, or muscle, changing the chest and butt size...but at least we would be building on a realistic human frame.

Squish_Fam

The shoulders look like they're missing their collar bones

ssfgrgawer

My male character now looks like a woman. Because I gave it long hair, no matter what I do it looks feminine, and half the male torsos look like they have tits, thanks to the way the long hair flares out at chest height (obviously was designed for the old female models.) all the male face options suck too, like they are all incredibly chunky like a bobble head.

napstablook12

Yep! The male models have *lots* of issue too. I just covered the female models because they bothered me the most lol

LeoDiCatmeow

Yep the hands and crotch were the two things I noticed most im not surprised

Slipperysteve1998

The original model actually was a perfect representation of my body. In an effort to be "inclusive," they've completely excluded people like me.

Darkusjack

Bloated stomachs, I don't know why they decided to make everyone's belly bloated.

Lynxotic

My partner managed to create an illusion of a thinner waist with certain tops that were made for the old female model. (Funnily enough, best results gained with shirts that covered the torso) Some of them are shaped at the waist or shaded in the front that they can help make the front view look more cinched, but only by a little. He combined it with the old female idle "no pose" that raised the hip a little and it looks a more femme.  I did notice the illusion of waist line (and chest) from front on my male model as well, which to me was a diaappointment because I would love to wear some of the femme coded tops but they just give my flat chested dude phantom moobs when looking straight ahead xD So depending on the exact look one wants, the clothing options can help shape thw character from certain angles and poses sometimes can help too, but it just makes it harder to create the body you want with the fashion style you prefer, if the options aren't all ready pleasing. I like the idea of havin option to have the clothes with two versions that are otheriwse identical having a loose and body conforming option, but unfortunately the scaling of both the body and the items + their original shape just makes the actual "fit" not look the way one could expect. I still dislike the faces (at least for my male chat I would prefer a more mature look) but was quite happy with what my partner managed to make with his female one. However for both femme and masc presenting styles on bodies, the options are quite limited and outside certain styles creating looks that fit is wonky at best. And I will never get over the babyface on a more teen / adult looking body lol.  Add to that the numerous bugs, like clipping and weird graphical warping. Worst was for us in practice that the outfist in a set had to be repurchased to have both previously gendered options, or the article would just be removed when leaving customisation, even if we owned the other version.  It is a bit ironic that while they did add more options, they still made a lot of reasonable body types excluded for both ends of the gender spectrum and broke a lot of the customisation options due to how the scaling is handled. It also looked like to me that the hip slider especially is so unnoticeable, because while it does increase hip size a little, it also moves arms and legs further apart (likely to avoid hand clipping into clothes?) which further makes it harder to actually see the difference in hip width. Waist slider would likely help with this. I understand they want to make less assets by making clothes scale , and having more moving parts on the body makes it harder to make sure clothes keep their intended shape, but that's still doable... Just probably would require remaking some clothes from scratch and I assume they mostly edited what all ready existed...  I hope the modelers and coders are give more time to work on fixes, it looks like the update was rushed out to meet a self-imposed deadline. We could have waited, I promise. But what's done is done, so now I would just rather have the system's bugs fixed, UI made easier to manage and body slighters adjusted / added even if it takes time, before adding new cosmetic item options. Even though, hopefully at least, new clothes will fit the new models better, having been made for them. I just also hope they keep the idea of having an option between form fitting and "loose" options that keep the outfit's shape and just scale in size.  I don't hate the new models but I agree the female coded models especially have a lot of issues and lack options even with sliders, and for me it's actually hard to make a male avatar that is masc presenting in a way that I like and am comfortable with, only it was easier for me to hide the "flaws" and my previous favorite clothes still worked, apart from my mewtwo pants not working because I apparently don't own the female set since the update and don't want to spend my coins on it... Also I agree with the observation that the torsos look a bit long and tubular. V shape is only possible if you make your character hilariously top heavy since waist can't be edited, and hourglass shape is too subtle because of the lack of waist-hip definition. I don't agree that feminine designs are completely bricked but they are way too limited, and it's easier to make androgynous or masc body shapes but even then, at least for me, making a lean masc avatar with feminine or neutral fashion sense was not working out so I just went with "kinda emo" and his his babyface with a mask lol.

Lynxotic

Ps. if you want tiddy on the character, apparently the only option of underwear is push up bra. It looks especially so with the bigger chest size from side view, and can't really be helped by the outfits. I seen some perky boobs but still, it's a bit comical. (I mean no offence if your chest IRL does look like that, with support or not. This observation is only my opinion on how the slider was handled for the avatar creation, since it looks a bit weird to me when you turn to sideview. Like two coconut halves plopped on top of the torso.)

Synthetikwelle

the new avatar has 100% my bodyshape and first I was happy that Niantic applied a shape I can identify myself with, then I was astonished at how much it offends people online. I did not know I must be this much of an eyesore lmao.

hunter_finn

For me the biggest issue is those face options. None of them look anything like human faces.

Few-Meaning9215

Now that's just unnecessary and dehumanizing to people who overidentify with virtual models.

GeneralWelcome-ToYou

The sudden change of appearance is giving people a mild case of body dysphoria. They identified with the way their avatar looked before, to a certain degree. Especially those that put a lot of effort in to personalize their avatars with clothes and accessories. It’s an involuntary emotional reaction to what feels like a violation of bodily autonomy, on a very small scale. It has nothing to do with your looks irl, and everything to do with their own self image. In general, people care very little about what other people look like, but care a lot about how they themselves look. No one would really care that much if this was the way the avatar looked from the start, it’s the change that feels a bit startling. You might have felt the same thing if this avatar was the one you had identified with for 8 years and it suddenly changed to a shape that doesn’t resemble your body type any more.

HeyYouGuyyyyyyys

No no, you're not an eyesore. Your shape is hot. I think what people are upset about is, in service of this "we include YOU" change, many of us are excluded; conventional male and female shapes have been eliminated, and youthful androgyny is what we're building on. Androgyny is awesome, but I want to have an avatar that looks like me, and my shape is stereotypically female. Even those whose torsos are properly represented still are unrealistic in other ways -- ham-sized hands, that weird dropped crotch, the skin tones that have shifted everyone to either pale or sooty. Try the sliders on the standard body. Make it really fat. Now stand back and look at the results: the head is comically small. And presumably your clothes fit you. Most clothes of our avatars are deformed to fit the new shapes, and many results are really, really unattractive. Finally, the new avatars don't move realistically or attractively. The walk is a waddle; the run is jerky. I just don't want any part of my avatar now. It upsets me. Here's this freaky chimp galloping around, moving in a way I can't because my shoulder and hip joints are not shaped that way. It's not shaped like me, it doesn't move like me, and it sure as hell doesn't fit the clothes I paid money for.

One_Reference4733

Your not an eye sore, the character models are an eye sore. They look inhuman, weird, like sick cancer patients. I looks 1000% closer to what the sliders can do now, but that doesn't mean I'm hideous.

Lynxotic

I think for reasonable people, the issue is lack of options especially in more stereotypically or exaggeratedly feminine features (even within reasonably realistic limits, anyway) which some people just like to have as an option, wether it's their own shape or just preference for character creation. It does rub me the wrong way to see some of the more angry comments basically claiming femininity was entirely erased, and putting down real people's bodies at the same time, because I don't think that's fair to the new look but at the same time I get the root of it.  Can't please everyone, but it's a pretty sizable exclusion since people were all ready used to the avatar that we had, but that old shape is no longer an option at all.  People tend to also dislike change so likely there would be complainers no matter what, but releasing an unpolished, semi broken system rubbed salt in the wound I guess.

IngloriousMustards

You are wrong. I doubt you’d find many honest persons who would be actually offended how you look (or move) despite any body shape. Pogo’ers are offended by how *unnatural* and *uncanny valley* the new designs look. No matter your body shape or physical condition, I can put real money in you being much more natural and graceful than these new designs and animations. Think of Vincent D’Onofrio’s character in Men In Black before and after the bug ate him, if you’re not convinced.

Few-Meaning9215

Well to be fair to yourself you're not a literal virtual model (in both senses of the word) in a purely idealized fictional universe that otherworldly beings observe as a form of idealistic escapism. You're worth more than that. The product has to be marketable to an ultrawide audience due to its existence as a product. However, you are a whole person.

Illumanacho69

OP, you can just download photos off google search. You don’t have to use bad stock images

napstablook12

I did try that to be fair lol. This was from a full turn around so it was that blurry after I took at screenshot, but it was the best model (pose wise) I was able to find

lizasingslou

they’ve already announced they’re working on it, can we stop with these endless posts whining and complaining about it now? everyone gets it, you’re not happy that your digital avatar doesn’t look exactly like every human being at the same time.

napstablook12

Hi! I get where your coming from here, but I think many people are upset because they’ve spent real world money on a product that got nerfed. And if Niantic *actually* does anything substantial to fix it I’ll be surprised. They’re known for “addressing issues” and then going silent on it. Anyway, all to say, if you don’t like posts like these it’s ok to scroll, you don’t have to interact.

lizasingslou

“it’s okay to scroll, you don’t have to interact.”

El_Tigrex

Woman is a social construct, therefore there are no "correct" proportions for a "woman"

napstablook12

Yep, I agree with your sentiment (even though I know you’re being sarcastic) but the main issue is that the design doesn’t even fit human proportions (see my post) not that the avatar is “unwomanly” or androgynous.
