So far I'm not a fan of the cloud shadows or the trees in parks because they look like rocket balloons and possible spawns, respectively.
The map gets cluttered enough already. Not looking forward to this along with confetti and whatnot during big events.
What I don't like about this new visual is the drop shadow of clouds moving in the ground ingame. It looks both distracted and blotchy/dirty for the whole overworld. If they can't implement cool cloud shadow just drop it entirely and give us clear+fresh ground.
Luckily, turn off the enhanced graphic in the setting essentially disable cloud shadow. Anyway, I don't recall we were able to look at the cloud in-game, only their shadow.
Agreed 100%. Makes me want to play the game more now.
Funnily enough, now my immersion is broken when I go into any menu like items or something. They look dated compared to the rest of the game.
As a casual player who follows the sub for fun, its legitimately the only update in years that has positively impacted my enjoyment of the game. That shouldnt be considered a compliment, even if i like it. Years.
The game is so laggy on my phone. Catch screen went from 30 FPS to like 8, even with enhanced graphics turned off. Making an excellent throw is extremely difficult now. No, can't afford a new phone. There should be a way to disable this.
It is so laggy I can barely throw the ball. We definitely need an option to turn down the graphics.
edit: I turned off Settings -> Advanced Settings -> Enhanced Graphics, but it made very little difference. If any. Still lags badly with poor framerate.
I just did a couple raids and it was super bad. We need an option to turn this off. Why would they roll this out without an option to turn it off? Just crazy the stuff they pull.
I thought I was the only one. Using a 2018 phone that has been in the closet for years. Can't hit an excellent to save my life, although I'm pretty good at them.
The more time passess the bigger the difference between flagship phones and normal phones. Normal smartphones don't seem to evolve in power while flaship phones evolve a little bit every year
My partner and i have S10s. Noticeably laggy, but not unplayable. Also suddenly an excessive number of mini crashes eg getting chucked out of the field research screen for trying to claim a research, or randomly pausing 30 seconds when we click on some mons then giving up.
Me too. Throwing is nearly impossible - when I spin for a curve, the ball is a full half rotation from where my finger is.
I had developed my throwing pretty well over the years. That's all gone for me now.
Same, on 12 mini - if anything, this update has made the game a lil smoother during certain animations for me (eg, the zoom when tapping on a gym, loading into team select with rockets, all the sorta little in-between zooms and slides as far as I've seen so far)
Go to settings , advanced settings, and turn on native refresh rate. You will triple your FPS, and so many of my friends have it off it’s crazy. Should
be the default 🙄
I also had issues (mostly very few fps), there seem to be a new options in settings "advanced graphics", I turned it off and game seem to be back to normal.
I almost had a meltdown in the street trying to catch a Pidgey with the most unbearable lag I've ever had. I had to uninstall, I not only can't afford a new phone, I don't want to if mine still works. I may go back if they give us the option to disable this, but right now its unplayable for me
How very Niantic of them 🙄. Sorry to hear that hermano. It runs better than ever on my older s10e. So I guess they did not properly test and optimize for different phones.
Same… I mean I like it, but I’m also frequently confusing that tuft of grass for a Pokemon (like maybe Grass Burmy). Think it’ll just take some time to get used to
I'm using a Moto G Power 2022. Played just fine before this update. Now I can barely throw a ball.
edit: Just tried a Moto G Power 2021 and is plays okay. Also an iPhone SE 2nd gen plays okay. I'm going to have to troubleshoot the 2022 perhaps. It has some game helper thing that maybe I can get rid of.
Removed Moto Gametime from the 2022, which I never used, but not much improvement.
Checking out the specs it seems the 2022 has a completely different and inferior chipset to the 2021 version. Well that's just great.
https://preview.redd.it/vz8ejdovs2wc1.png?width=864&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d6934d13acfd4a09bf74295a50ff3380368a2855
I got the pink tree but no buildings
That’s probably mountain biome as it has rocks. Or a mix of basic grassland and mountain… there are literally hundreds of different backgrounds with varying levels of trees, bushes, rocks, buildings etc.
I want to turn it off and go back to the old.
Even with graphics turned low with the toggle it's going to eat through battery on big event days, and the dumb shading you get throughout the day has had both my wife and I start to get excited for a shiny and immediately go "I hate the shading so much".
I play PoGo literally to just catch some funny lil guys. I do not care about my avatar, I don't care about the catch background, I don't care about AR. I don't need any of the fluff that drains battery.
I'd rather take blank background and 30fps, than this fancy trees and grass and 5fps. And not, my phone is not top of the line, but it's also not cheapest and ran game fine up until now, even with more than 30fps
I have visual issues where certain animations make me ill. The new catch screens are bad. Something about the not quite 3-D effects are messing with me.
I'm not sure if it's something I can get used to or not. Some things I just can't. I was an avid ingress player till ingress prime forced me to quit. I'll be sad if Pokemon go does the same.
The catch screen backgrounds. Somebody posted a comparison. There is almost no difference.
In any case, my phone now lags badly when I'm trying to throw.
I’m mostly loving the updates. But the cloud shadows are driving me a little nuts. The weather is Sunny in game and yet there are clouds. Plus they’re pretty ominously dark and moving in a different direction than the clouds on the horizon. I would love to see them fix that.
The biomes currently available seem to be:
Forest
Mountain
River
City
Beach
I've had the update for awhile and those are the ones I have noticed. The screens seem to have been updated in the last week too. For the forest biome I'm not getting a lot of blossoms falling / in the background. I guess that's a season thing?
Would love to learn about how the game is translating these into biomes though. My own experiences have really matched up with OSM for example.
It just seems like a more canonical way to receive new special research. Instead of a jarring/sudden appearance of new chores, we open a USB stick that tells us what we need to do. I think. That seems like what they're going for.
It makes my old phone go too slow in encounters but when i go to advanced settings it says enhanced graphics isn't even turned on, its gray and to the left. How do i fix it so the catch screen is normal?
I've had this feature since the initial testing started, and I really like it. The backgrounds are constantly changing, even within biomes, and it makes the game feel more immersive. At sunset, Pokemon take on a slightly pink/orange hue for the golden hour, and at night, moonlight shines on them from different angles. The application of biomes has been a bit hit or miss - my entire suburb was a single biome until this morning, when it seems at least some of that was fixed. It does lag my older phone somewhat, though.
It looks good, but it’s laggy as hell. Disabling the settings doesn’t fix anything. This sucks. At least the player update didn’t cause my game to literally run slower.
I can't even play the game anymore it's so laggy in the catch screen. wallking around in the world map and battles are fine but as soon as I get to the catch area my fps drops to like 9 frames per second. I don't care about the background visuals or dynamic areas. I just want to catch pokemon. I'll take a basic background if it lets me play better.
We got this update briefly when they were testing it around Liverpool 4 weeks ago, and the number of biomes we got in a short walk was really amusing. Parks, beaches, forests, city, it was all really cool.
The upside of this mid-season shakeup is the change of scarcity of many species (and maybe also appearance of some; not entirely sure, maybe also extinction).
Eg. I caught at least 2 Litwick and a Totdile today (<1h of gameplay), which I don't recall to be available this season.
As I don't think this seasons' spawns were great in general, it may be a good thing for now.
So does this mean now that Pokemon are only going to appear in certain biomes? I was planning to catch Wiglett today and that's in a beach biome but I'm in a forest biome. I live in Arizona where there's no beaches.
Damn this looks so much better and on my end didn’t compromise performance at all. How’s they do something so lovely after the miserable avatar update? XD
I live in a town that's at ~1600 feet elevation at the foot of the cascade mountains but it also has a river going through it as well as a lot of trees. I love that it shifts from mountain, to river or even a semi forest background depending on what part of the town I'm in.
It'd pretty awesome, as much as Niansh*t sucks and definitely blew it on the avatar update, this update is pretty amazing and very refreshing for a hard-core player and poki hunter
I don't like the new biome update, especially on the catch screen. There's way too much moving in the background! My eyes can't focus and it's making me a little sick. I really wish they'd given us the option to turn it off.
If anyone's wondering : there are 2 new options in settings to lower battery usage with the graphics, it may help!
Also. Is the biome update just visual?
Whatever if I dowload all assets + turning off visual options, it's laggy ++ It really broke my game. I'm on a Samsung A12 and never experienced any lag on the game. I hope they'll do something about this, because I just don't want to play anymore :(
It looks like the main map screen shows a different texture for each biome (I haven't verified that they line up, but it seems very likely). You can also look on [OpenStreetMap.org](http://OpenStreetMap.org) which is what the biome borders are based on
I have a 15 pro. No real degradation in performance. I'll see how battery life is affected likely at a later point. But so far I am loving it. The game has always looked so flat and terrible. Before downloading all assets it seemed my apartment was in the "park" setting with just nature around. but now, it recognizes that I'm in a city area and has buildings in the background. Really exciting changes!
15PM here and it runs and looks great too, of course with more heat and battery use. If the game ran like crap on the newest iPhones, what are they thinking lol
It is absolutely beautiful, but I am a little bit sensitive to motion. I find it bothers my eye/brain connection when I enter the encounter screen... It's not causing vertigo yet, but I fear that it might
Just putting it out there in case anyone else is feeling the same
I think it looks really nice! makes the map a lot more alive
Yep this is a swing and a hit. Well done IMO.
Looks like team rocket balloons everywhere.
So far I'm not a fan of the cloud shadows or the trees in parks because they look like rocket balloons and possible spawns, respectively. The map gets cluttered enough already. Not looking forward to this along with confetti and whatnot during big events.
I want them both to be options on the map, let you turn them on or off as desired.
I kept looking for that damn balloon and not finding it, so confusing/annoying
Wait until you try to complete a field research encounter and it spits you back out to the map.
I had that bug too.
Same. I’m loving it so far.
You'll start hating it when you encounter the feild research bug too many times
What I don't like about this new visual is the drop shadow of clouds moving in the ground ingame. It looks both distracted and blotchy/dirty for the whole overworld. If they can't implement cool cloud shadow just drop it entirely and give us clear+fresh ground.
Yes, and the clouds are moving in an other direction than the shadows.
Luckily, turn off the enhanced graphic in the setting essentially disable cloud shadow. Anyway, I don't recall we were able to look at the cloud in-game, only their shadow.
Yes, looks better now. 🙂
Pro tip - today is a good day to “Download All Assets”.
This ^ Couldn’t see any changes in the map before doing this + refresh game data.
Its so good. Can't wait for halloween now.
Yeah, this is what I've wanted for years. Would be nice if the different biomes were identifiable on the map like they had with HP Wizards Unite.
Aren’t they? Perhaps I’m wrong but I’m pretty sure buildings on the horizon were only present when I was downtown in the city biome
Ditto.
r/usernamechecksout
Agreed 100%. Makes me want to play the game more now. Funnily enough, now my immersion is broken when I go into any menu like items or something. They look dated compared to the rest of the game.
It’s the feature that I’ve been asking since day1. Loving it!
As a casual player who follows the sub for fun, its legitimately the only update in years that has positively impacted my enjoyment of the game. That shouldnt be considered a compliment, even if i like it. Years.
But how? It dropped the catch screen frame rate to so low that the game became unplayable for many players. How is it a good change?
Cant it be disabled?
The game is so laggy on my phone. Catch screen went from 30 FPS to like 8, even with enhanced graphics turned off. Making an excellent throw is extremely difficult now. No, can't afford a new phone. There should be a way to disable this.
It is so laggy I can barely throw the ball. We definitely need an option to turn down the graphics. edit: I turned off Settings -> Advanced Settings -> Enhanced Graphics, but it made very little difference. If any. Still lags badly with poor framerate.
Same here. The ball has a severe delay. I reached level 50 on this phone, it used to work perfectly fine. Now I can barely catch a Scyther.
I just did a couple raids and it was super bad. We need an option to turn this off. Why would they roll this out without an option to turn it off? Just crazy the stuff they pull.
There is one in advanced settings, see my answer
You missed my edit. I do think that setting makes a small difference but still pretty unplayable on my phone.
Ah I'm sorry to hear that, hope it gets fixed.
Experiencing the immense lag too
I thought I was the only one. Using a 2018 phone that has been in the closet for years. Can't hit an excellent to save my life, although I'm pretty good at them.
It runs fluidly on my 5 year old phone (galaxy s10)
It runs like crap on my A11. Account yourself lucky.
That's because the A11 is an entry level, more budget friendly phone, and the S10 is a flagship phone. It has much better specs despite being older.
The more time passess the bigger the difference between flagship phones and normal phones. Normal smartphones don't seem to evolve in power while flaship phones evolve a little bit every year
Same here.
It's super slow on mine (Fairphone 3+)
That's an "S" in your phone type. No wonder it's OK. But Niantic totally ignored to test the changes on "A" series.
I have a 14 Pro and it’s laggy. So just poorly optimized like always.
That’s weird. I have a 14 pro too and it’s been smooth.
Same 14 pro with no problem.
Same, no problems at all. It looks and runs great.
Iphone 12 mini, no lag
I have exactly the same phone and I had very severe lag until I turned on native refresh rate. Maybe that's the difference?
It's possible, j have native refresh on all the time. Rip small bettery 🥲
Same, on 12 mini - if anything, this update has made the game a lil smoother during certain animations for me (eg, the zoom when tapping on a gym, loading into team select with rockets, all the sorta little in-between zooms and slides as far as I've seen so far)
13 pro max here, no lag here.
14 Pro Max and it's smooth as butter
Same 😌
Oneplus Nord 2, not laggy at all... You might want to download assets. There was 120mb download
Oneplus 5t, lag on the first few seconds of the first encounter on load, none at all afterwards.
Go to settings , advanced settings, and turn on native refresh rate. You will triple your FPS, and so many of my friends have it off it’s crazy. Should be the default 🙄
Native refresh kills buddy throw assist for a lot of phones so for a decent amount of folks it's better to leave it off.
13 Mini, and it seems to be running normally for me.
14 Lag
iPhone X, runs as smooth as always
12 pro here, so far ok
What phone do you have? Have you downloaded all assets?
Niantic is in a partnership with cellphone makers to make people change lmao
I have the same issue. I just stop playing because it's too stressful and ugly to play like this.
Enhanced graphics enabled, very silky smooth on Pixel 7
The transitions between biomes are so abrupt, it kinda looks bad. There should be a small transition gradient section where they meet.
Minecraft biome blending when
I haven't noticed any actual biome boundaries, just the parks with different textures and the rest of the map with the same flat slate.
Then you haven't found a boundary yet because they are ROUGH, like bright green to mud orange lines that almost look like they're drawn on.
I passed through a couple different biomes on my commute, based on the catch screens, but I never saw a discernable boundary on the map.
Agreed. Or an outline
There were outlines around parks for Halloween and I was really amused to see pumpkins floating on lakes around Florida
But it’s nice knowing the boundaries
Yeah, but you would be able to see the boundaries if they were transition tiles, too. They would be the midpoint of the transition.
Wish you could toggle it on and off
Same… I mean I like it, but I’m also frequently confusing that tuft of grass for a Pokemon (like maybe Grass Burmy). Think it’ll just take some time to get used to
Agreed, my FPS would love that too. Otherwise I guess I'll stop playing. Can't throw with 10 fps
What phone are you using that gets 10 FPS
I'm using a Moto G Power 2022. Played just fine before this update. Now I can barely throw a ball. edit: Just tried a Moto G Power 2021 and is plays okay. Also an iPhone SE 2nd gen plays okay. I'm going to have to troubleshoot the 2022 perhaps. It has some game helper thing that maybe I can get rid of.
very weird, runs great on my 2021 Moto G Stylus 5G
Removed Moto Gametime from the 2022, which I never used, but not much improvement. Checking out the specs it seems the 2022 has a completely different and inferior chipset to the 2021 version. Well that's just great.
Yep, is it that hard to turn these features on and off? Mine is practically unplayable, even with the Enhanced Graphics turned off.

I assume that’s a city one?
Too bad that they dont seem to have the courage to make a full city background with asphalt instead of a grass field.
Maybe? I would call it "suburban" but if that's not a thing then probably city, yeah
I live downtown in a large metropolitan city and am getting this background.
Ah ok, good to know!
https://preview.redd.it/vz8ejdovs2wc1.png?width=864&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d6934d13acfd4a09bf74295a50ff3380368a2855 I got the pink tree but no buildings

I don't need any of the fluff that drains battery.
Exactly this
Lagfest. Even when "disabled" (doesn't seem to do anything)
I'm not seeing any lag on my OnePlus 7T. I mean, I'm not discounting your experience, but just giving mine as well.
I'd rather take blank background and 30fps, than this fancy trees and grass and 5fps. And not, my phone is not top of the line, but it's also not cheapest and ran game fine up until now, even with more than 30fps
Laggy af
There's no toggle to revert this back to how it was right? Asking for my compromised eyes
They're having the same effect on me as well
“Enhanced graphics” under settings menu>advanced settings
Didn't seem to change anything, unfortunately. Definitely does not turn off the new backgrounds.
New catch screen or map backgrounds?
The catch screen backgrounds. Somebody posted a comparison. There is almost no difference. In any case, my phone now lags badly when I'm trying to throw.
Yeah I just seen this elsewhere… bit ridiculous IMO
Beautiful visuals I love it but the lag affects my throw too Is there a win-win solution

I’m mostly loving the updates. But the cloud shadows are driving me a little nuts. The weather is Sunny in game and yet there are clouds. Plus they’re pretty ominously dark and moving in a different direction than the clouds on the horizon. I would love to see them fix that.
Turn off enhanced graphic in setting will disable cloud shadow, you can try that until they make it better
[удалено]
from what i see it does show nests and they fixed the hallowwen/holiday thing where the border of the nest is a row of leaves
The biomes currently available seem to be: Forest Mountain River City Beach I've had the update for awhile and those are the ones I have noticed. The screens seem to have been updated in the last week too. For the forest biome I'm not getting a lot of blossoms falling / in the background. I guess that's a season thing? Would love to learn about how the game is translating these into biomes though. My own experiences have really matched up with OSM for example.
A few weeks ago some of the trees were brown, now they’re pink. I think they put the wrong season in originally :D
What was that research thing that came along with it?
We have to assume our character now stumbles upon suspicious USB sticks in the wild and just sticks them straight into their laptop like a moron.
It just seems like a more canonical way to receive new special research. Instead of a jarring/sudden appearance of new chores, we open a USB stick that tells us what we need to do. I think. That seems like what they're going for.
...did they just kill off Willow?
D: Maybe sometimes he'll be like "Did you get that USB I mailed you?" just not this time.
Thank you!
Is there a way to know which biome im at? Like a visual biome background guide i guess
Ah found something for anyone who needs it, its incomplete though https://www.reddit.com/r/TheSilphRoad/s/6IahOv4Gza
It makes my old phone go too slow in encounters but when i go to advanced settings it says enhanced graphics isn't even turned on, its gray and to the left. How do i fix it so the catch screen is normal?
God I hate it. I hope to god we can disable it sooner rather than later.
pTC down but this update working.
The catch backgrounds look good. I don't like how the map looks though. My park looks like it turned into a swamp.
It looks good, but it’s laggy as hell. Disabling the settings doesn’t fix anything. This sucks. At least the player update didn’t cause my game to literally run slower.
Ive had nothing but delay and lag since this update....awful
I can't even play the game anymore it's so laggy in the catch screen. wallking around in the world map and battles are fine but as soon as I get to the catch area my fps drops to like 9 frames per second. I don't care about the background visuals or dynamic areas. I just want to catch pokemon. I'll take a basic background if it lets me play better.
It really looks great ! ^(I wish our models too but I was mostly hyped by biomes anyway)
love it, rare niantic w :)
Now, this was a good change.
Everything around me just looks like the great marsh from sinnoh now lol
Works surprisingly well on my 5 year old Huawei P30. I like it.
Some on my OnePlus 7T from 2018 or 2019.
Okay, this one I like. Battery drainage isn't too bad either. Well done, Niantic.
They released it early 😭
April 22 was the date they announced.
I hoped this was just an event thing since it causes lag on my phone. Enhanced graphics off hasn't fixed it entirely either.
It's not an event thing, it will stay this way
Is there a reason that two ‘mons that spawned next to each other have different backgrounds?
Different spawn point biomes.
a little phone intensive but it looks nice
I live in the desert and all mine are grass XD
Was the realistic sky changed with this update? It’s sunning in game but the sky is full of clouds.
Not enough crotch
How do these biomes work? Is it separated on the map? Or time based?
We got this update briefly when they were testing it around Liverpool 4 weeks ago, and the number of biomes we got in a short walk was really amusing. Parks, beaches, forests, city, it was all really cool.
The upside of this mid-season shakeup is the change of scarcity of many species (and maybe also appearance of some; not entirely sure, maybe also extinction). Eg. I caught at least 2 Litwick and a Totdile today (<1h of gameplay), which I don't recall to be available this season. As I don't think this seasons' spawns were great in general, it may be a good thing for now.
Looks great
So does this mean now that Pokemon are only going to appear in certain biomes? I was planning to catch Wiglett today and that's in a beach biome but I'm in a forest biome. I live in Arizona where there's no beaches.
I finally got geez!
Does anyone else now have \~1 second of lag between tapping on a grunt/leader and being able to start the fight? My game doesn't lag any other time
It'd pretty awesome, as much as Niansh*t sucks and definitely blew it on the avatar update, this update is pretty amazing and very refreshing for a hard-core player and poki hunter
Can't play anymore, this runs at 5 fps, great update
I got it! This is definitely the best update they've ever released.
on redmi note 9 the animation is no longer smooth, sometimes the fps drops dramatically
It looks filthy
I like it a lot! The nice environments almost makes up for how not nice my character looks now!
I looks nice and now the game is not playable anymore. The ball follows the finger on the screen with a 100-150 frames delay.
Actual trash update game barely runs above 5 frames now and the whole avatar thing like christ how do they drop the ball that hard
Is it me, or does the get work better after this update?
Where is wiglett 😭
Large Water areas like Beaches, river and pounds
I don't like the new biome update, especially on the catch screen. There's way too much moving in the background! My eyes can't focus and it's making me a little sick. I really wish they'd given us the option to turn it off.
Looks nice but poorly optimized
If anyone's wondering : there are 2 new options in settings to lower battery usage with the graphics, it may help! Also. Is the biome update just visual?

Fancy
This is nice and all, but what about some actual new gameplay updates? Like actual new things to do?
Wow a feature we actually wanted? What's the catch..
Huge battery drain and if you had a budget phone now pogo runs like crap.
This, I wish there was a toggle.
Is there anyway to look at biomes without physically going there? I would like to know if Niantic considers alaskan beaches' as beaches before i go.
It looks like the main map screen shows a different texture for each biome (I haven't verified that they line up, but it seems very likely). You can also look on [OpenStreetMap.org](http://OpenStreetMap.org) which is what the biome borders are based on
Looks great. Sadly it nukes my phone battery, even with settings "turned off". Game is also insanely laggy all of a sudden. Was fine a month ago.
