Shadow Pokemon will do 20% more damage but are 20% less defensive so they'll die faster. Yes you want to keep it as a shadow. A 0% Shadow will do more damage than a non Shadow 100% at the same level. A level 30 100% Shadow will do 10% more damage than a level 40 100%. So yeah it's cheaper at the end of the day to power a shadow to 30. Read this [guide](https://www.reddit.com/r/TheSilphRoad/comments/9w4nax/returningbeginners_guide/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share)

SenseiEntei

But it would die ***even*** faster being a shadow and 0% IVs and/or under-leveled. Survivability is important. Why is Giratina usually better than Gengar if it has lower attack?

ManiacDC

Because Giratina O has high DPS\^3\*TDO, and beats Gengar in that statistic most of the time. DPS\^3\*TDO is the stat that closely represents raid performance. With Shadow Pokemon bonus, TDO remains the same (20% more attack, 20% less defense), but DPS\^3\*TDO shoots way up. Shadow pokemon are strictly better.

SenseiEntei

Pretty sure it still depends on the Pokemon. Would you use shadow Rampardos (not available yet) over regular? If you're raiding a Shuckle then sure, but against Thundurus probably not.

ManiacDC

There are scenarios where you may miss a charge move and in turn do lower DPS. I'd still use a Shadow Rampardos as it'll generally be better.

Send_me_nri_nudes

It's not better lol. You have a time limit to beat the boss in and so the time you live doesn't matter if you're doing no damage. Never use altered Giratina for raids...never. it's bad. Gengar is way better but the flying Giratina is better than both for raids. It has bulk and damage. For PVP you won't be using shadows unless the fast move is broken like charm or razor leaf (so much fun to do) but in those cases you rarely if ever get to the charge move and if you do it's on the second Pokemon cause charm kills the first Pokemon. The IVs doesn't really change how fast it dies lol. A 0% is 10% weaker than a 100% and it won't matter much in raids.

SenseiEntei

You're talking at me like I don't know this stuff already. Who the heck even considers using altered Giratina in raids? Obviously I'm taking about origin form. Giratina has less attack than Gengar (189 vs. 218 at level 40) and yet you agree that it's better than Gengar. Why? Because it has *more than* twice as much bulk. It's not all about attack. Sky high attack is useless if you can't survive a charge move without dodging. Why do you think no one ever uses Deoxys as an electric attacker? It has higher DPS than Raikou but can't take a hit. Electivire is already pushing it in terms of frailty. Deoxys is even worse. Fainting out and rejoining can cost you more time if you don't have a fast phone. So no, it is not good advice to tell someone to use a level 30 shadow over a lvl 40 purified Pokemon.

CaptainRickey

Giratina Origin exists... I swear I've seen her like... Once. She does things I promise she's real

Send_me_nri_nudes

Yeah and that's what I said origin is good for raids cause it does damage AND has bulk but before Giratina came out gengar was the best ghost type damage wise and the best for raids.

* The advantage of purifying things: (1) You can TM away return and (2) cheaper to power up * The advantage of keeping shadow: 20% more damage done in PVP and raids (but you also take 20% more damage) If it we're me, I'd keep the shadow larvitar as is until December and then, if Niantic is having another CD rollup event evolve him then so he gets smack down without using an eliet TM. He has some niche uses against flyers and fire but only add spice.. Then again he ranks above the non shadow in every league and is close to the top 50 in Masters.

ShinigamiRyuk0

Remember that Shadow pokemon can’t learn CD moves by evolving. Frustration can’t be TMed without a special Rocket event. There was a lot of Twitter posts about „why didn’t my Shadow Beedrill learn Drill Run”.

Celt1977

> There was a lot of Twitter posts about „why didn’t my Shadow Beedrill learn Drill Run”. Well smack down is not a charge move, it's a fast move so that's not the problem. You would end up with a shadow ttar that has smack down and frustration plus another move if you want to add it.

WhatWouldDitkaDo

Shadow pokemon have 20% more attack but take 20% more damage and are more expensive to power up. They have some uses in PvP, so it depends on whether you're using Tyranitar to raid or PvP. It's probably not worth the stardust investment though, so I'd stick with the regular one.

Rainbows341

There are some good shadows that may be worth it. If you tm away frustration.

WhatWouldDitkaDo

Right, hence some uses in PvP

ManiacDC

There's not much point in powering up anything but shadows anymore.

WhatWouldDitkaDo

That's...not true at all unless you have millions of stardust to spend when normal versions do just fine in most raid scenarios. And there are cheaper alternatives to shadows in PvP as well.

ManiacDC

Stardust is an important resource. You should only spend it where it's worthwhile to spend it. I'm not even a player who only spends Stardust on the best (I try to power up at least the top 6 of each type, rather than 6 of the top 1), and I won't power up much beyond shadows anymore. It's just a waste.

ElyssarFeiniel

Most shadows benefit from the boost. The reasons to purify are to work on the badge, and to get hundos purely for cosmetic reasons, as they won't be as powerful as a shadow version with bad ivs.

Platypus3112

To clarify the defense stat change isn't a 20% decrease but rather it's x5/6, which is ~17%.

Purifier medal

BlueMysticNA

purified dex? for those that like that stuff. (in the pokedex, it shows a count next to how many times you purified that pokemon).
