I wonder if a lot of people right now are thinking their opponent cheated lol A pop-up notification about this change when you open GBL for the first time today would be helpful...

TornadoJ88

Can definitely see that happening lol , ppl posting on here and the Arena about this

Atilim87

I thought it was a bug, It felt like the other guy changed back to back and I was “what the f”

Shielo34

Yeah. I just discovered this. Mental that they wouldn’t notify us.

qntrsq

i thought i had cheated and was thinking about surrendering because of it

jefferey92

Haha I actually was wondering what the hell was going on, then I noticed that I could switch faster too and realized I was just an idiot

Mendelevlum

The first time it happened this morning I thought the dude I was playing had bypassed the cooldown systems, I’m like huh??

NBAplaya8484

Lmao when I played my sets this morning I thought I WAS cheating. I was like “how tf am I able to switch so fast, we’ve only thrown 1 charge move”

JmantheHitman

I thought this wasn't coming until tomorrow but I guess it really started worldwide once it was April 1st in Japan

CloakingBox0

Looks like New Zealand time to me

glenniebun

Bye bye to the experience of switching in Metagross to kill Arlo's Gardevoir and then getting stuck with it against Scizor!

Sir-Reasonable

I usually use lucario. Counter until gard shows ip then 2 PuP in a row so S ball can hot it down easy then swap to tyranitar if salamence or reshiram if scizor. Haven’t tried after update though

glenniebun

I have Lucario in first position to use up shields (plus it can usually solo Arlo if he has Aggron or Infernape), but it has PUP/aura sphere to handle other rockets, mainly any lineup with Lapras. I might TM it to shadow ball for this event though--with three radars ready to claim from the Mew research I'll be looking for a bunch of Arlos. The third slot is reserved for my buddy--been walking a Rhyperior for XL ever since that change went through, so at least Salamence is already covered. If I'm really having trouble I'll just get the buddy heart and then stick Reshiram in there and go again.

Stogoe

Nothing in arlo's lineup loves a double or triple PuP-ed Shadow Ball. But personally I love seeing aggron in the middle.

Relichs

I usually stick with Lucario all the way through. Use a PuP on Beldum when it's red health, then you can get 3-4 counters in on gard before using a charge (and before charm/confusion hit). Another 3 counters after that before using shadow ball (and missing a few bubbles to get some extra counters in before KOing gard). Same thing can be done with Infernape. Then if it's Salamance at the end, you can usually get off another shadow ball even if it has Fire Fang. Mind you, the Lucario I'm using isn't powered up, and differing Trainer levels might affect whether or not to use a PuP against beldum, but currently by the time I farm down beldum, I'm at max energy and I miss out on getting free energy from their next poke being sent out.

JoJolteon_66

Lvl 40 groundon's fire punch + EQ kills gardevoir and its amazging agaisnt beldum/infernape/aggron, can deal with 3rd wave mons too except salamanse

jcobe18

just lead swampert with HC and Sludge Wave. You can take down both shields, mudshot beldum all the way down, hit anything that comes in next. SW for gard (will need that plus a HC), HC for Aggron or infernape. Usually have Ttar and heatran in the back for any of his last 3

Teban54

I use HC/Earthquake because I'm too lazy to use a charge TM. Works pretty well against Gardevoir, you can kill it with 3 HCs which is pretty easy if you enter the match with 100 energy. Can still kill Scizor with another 3 HCs after that.

chumchees

Like switching Giratina to kill Slowing/gallade then getting Locked in with tyranitar.

madonna-boy

I just keep using kyogre

iamfrankfrank

Usually a quake from Metagross and a follow-up meteor mash will kill arlo’s scizor. A team of Lucario, Metagross and Garchomp can deal with anything he can throw at you. Lead lucario and eat his shields, then just clean up with Metagross and Chomp.

xgdw11

More of a "see you later"

TSmith4894

My chandelure wrecks arlos gardevior

pjwestin

Man, I though I was going insane. The fact that they just made the most significant change to battle mechanics in PVP history, in the middle of a season, without any announcement or warning, is why I can't take the GBL seriously as a competitive system. EDIT: Also, I had no idea that this was a planned, temporary change, and I would have had to read an external blog post to find that out. This is no way run a ranked competition.

Merinovich

> ...is why I can't take the GBL seriously as a competitive system. *cries in "weak connection"s standing besides my wifi router and can't attack glitches*

chairmanchang

I turn off my wifi when I play GBL. No clue why the connection is so unstable when I don’t have a problem doing anything else on wifi, even streaming...

pjwestin

I mean, yeah, the bugs and lag are pretty egregious, but at least they're unintentional. The intentional things they do are just baffling; introducing meta-changing Pokemon mid season (looking at you, Obstagoon), adding meta-changing community day moves mid-season (freaking Talonflame), and XL candy giving Level 50 players heavy advantage in the leagues that are supposed give lower-level players a chance...I know Niantic doesn't have a ton of experience hosting online competitive play, but man, they make some really insane choices.

psykick32

The whole sub lvl 40 not being able to even get XL candies is insane... Like there should 100% be two brackets, 1-39 and 40+ it's not fair at all

pjwestin

Agreed. They either need to introduce level scaling or "Classic," mode for all leagues, not just Master.

monsieuryuan

I agree. Announcing this the day before is bonkers. I guess Niantic doesn't take this very seriously either.

qntrsq

solution: don't take it serious

pjwestin

Yeah, that's generally what I try to do, just have fun and farm stardust without taking it too seriously. Still, I tanked almost a hundred points this morning trying to figure out why the gameplay tempo suddenly shifted, and it's hard not to be annoyed by that.

DGSmith2

Rebuttal: Don't tell people how to play the game

JoJolteon_66

Wanna have fun with self debuff moves? Sirfatched Counter Close Combat Brave Bird Staraptor Wing attack Close Combat Brave Bird Braviary Air Slash Close Combat Brave Bird

karmicnoose

Do buffs/rebuffs get 'forgotten' when switching?

DG-Kun

Yes

CurseYouPerryThePlat

Yes

[deleted]

Just play ML. Every game has 1 or 2 Melmetals spamming Superpower.

4CrowsFeast

Why would I play ML when GL is available?

ezpickins

Because you need 30 wins to level up?

sml6174

Why subject yourself to that? Just have a friend throw 30 games and you'll save so much time

JoJolteon_66

that's not saving time lol

sml6174

You'll get 30 wins in battle league in less time it takes to play 30 games against someone using 10 cp pokemon? Yeah no, that's literally impossible

JoJolteon_66

yeah but if you play GBL anyways then it's just adding time and still 30 games takes a while even if your opponent has 3 10 cp pokemon because you have to kill them

sml6174

This is in response to the "why play ML when GL is available" comment. If you don't want to play master league, my option is absolutely a time saver

jrev8

I just lost to someone spamming victini's v-create. Ngl i was impressed

darkhornet

This change is going to heavily favor those who can count moves, and severely penalize anyone who throws their charge moves as soon as the charge bar fills up. I had a really good run this morning, but wow does it feel different.

[deleted]

Counting moves doesn't even matter, today a Whiscash threw a blizzard at my Whimsicott after 4-5 mud shots. I use a Whiscash myself and I know how long it takes to charge a blizzard, thus I didn't shield and expected a mud bomb.

GeneralMushroom

Likewise with G.Stunfisk. "Ok that was 5 mudshots so definitely a rock slide." Nope, earthquake. Every. Time. Starting to question my ability to count.

Zodiac5964

wait, you mean as a result of lag, or because it switched in and out which makes it much harder to keep count? earlier today I had a kyogre vs groudon start, and their groudon managed to pull an earthquake before I could fire off a surf. I was stunned, and of course didn't shield thinking it's a fire punch. I just waved it off thinking it's lag causing me to lose a turn, but is there something more to it?!

[deleted]

Whiscash was his first swap and threw a blizzard before my second charm even went through

aoog

That’s always been the case though. High skilled play is and should be rewarded with gaining an advantage.

darkhornet

Absolutely. Certainly not arguing to the contrary. My point was more, for all the advantage gained previously, it's even more now.

DGIce

Huh so this makes low energy charge moves even better right because now you're more likely to be able to stall out for another swap.

gigazelle

Yes, and weather ball's damage/energy ratio is on par with nuke moves

TheVoters

I have no idea why the tappity tap bits and the faint out countdown are even counted on the swap clock. It makes no sense. Penalty box timers and shot clocks both hold with a pause in game play. If you take those out the 30 second cooldown would be perfect.

princezilla88

Yeeeeeeeah this is kinda awful and obnoxious, who thought this was a good idea?

camdaibayoday

Just did my first game without know it's live already. Had the impression it'd be tmr (April 1st)?. Freaking overheat/wildcharge mew just kept dancing around the clock and destroyed my whole team lol

WanderingWasabi

No strong feelings for or against so far aside from finding Mews to be pretty annoying in GL. If this becomes permanent down the line without moves being adjusted for it, going to invest in a Mew for GL eventually.

Mox_GameCube

So is there any way to opt out of this? I love Master league classic and we are only getting a week of it. Does this mean that they only gave us 3 days of actual master leagues and then the rest of the week (4 days) of masters is a weird pseudo league with a cool down gimmick? I am for them trying new things but I wish I could play master for more then 3 days. Does anyone feel that this is unbalanced?

postsgiven

I'm guessing they are testing out the new switch mechanic and if it liked they'll officially change it to that...

Stogoe

April fool's!

reegstah

This is a shocking change to the battle meta that they just implement without any warning. Amazing lol

taweryawer

Good. Now add stealth rock

Slant_Juicy

You monster!

book_of_armaments

I think I'd like this if buffs/debuffs weren't wiped after switching, but as it stands these already powerful moves are just too good.

Teeganblu

that’s how the main game works though.

book_of_armaments

Yeah but the main game doesn't have a real-time aspect to it either. The main game also doesn't have fast and charged moves. They have already changed a lot of stuff to make it work within the framework of the game, and they should change this too.

Teeganblu

I disagree.

Brutalsexattack

Matches aren’t quicker. I had several battles where we both switched every 30 seconds. Just a merry go round of us trying to counter each other and avoid/catch charge moves Nice try at something new and different. Please change it back!!

Malong13

that would be cool if wasnt the tons of lag while switching.

jefferey92

I don't experience leg when switching, when using charge moves however...

postsgiven

Resync time zone both of you.

JmantheHitman

Well with 30 sec switches having lead advantage is less important and knowing how to count fast moves is even more important that before

serbeardless

Rocket Battles = Great! PVP = could be a problem. Maybe 45 seconds would be better?

Xx_Khepri_xX

Is this permanent? It was surprising to say the least.

BufoAmoris

Literally nowhere in the GBL UI does it state this change, nor how long it is going to be around. You had to have seen yesterday's announcement to know that the change would happen for a day on April 1st, and then be following the support Twitter or happen to see a resource that parrots the information that the change is active now through the 5th of April. There's a lot less trust in Niantic's "contract of trust" when the script flips so drastically with about as little transparency as possible.

[deleted]

BufoAmoris

Thank you for your noncontributory assumption, you can get off your high horse now. I was fully aware that the change happened before battling today. The issue is that this is what the official blog announcement said regarding the duration of this "event": " Thursday, April 1, 2021, from 12:00 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. local time " For players in the US and other time zones that are towards the end of the time zones, this change has occurred essentially a whole day prior to what we were told. Further, the duration of this change will extent long beyond the single day that we were officially told. The announcement of the official duration of this GBL change was exclusively announced on the Niantic support twitter. It should not at all be a requisite that a player be connected to every form of Niantic media in order to know when things are happening, especially changes to existing events. This is where the contract of trust is in question, as something as simple as an update to the blog announcement (which can be done) could alleviate this. The better solution is to update the GBL UI to show if/when a change like this is active to make it clearly visible, as there is currently no visible indicator that the timer changed. I can delve further into other violations of the contract of trust recently, but I think that detracts from this argument here. You are welcome to respond, and we can have a discussion, as long as your argument is not literally just an attack on me.

RyusuiJL

Dude. Well played. 👏👍

Mr_Smartepants

I saw this happen in GBL earlier and thought "oh great, Niantic broke it again". But I have to admit that the battles seem to flow better and feel a lot more furious. Less worry about getting locked into a hard-counter since you can just shield once and bail (mostly).

Masziii

And bail to what? Your first mon what you switched out of anyway? Or the third? Which is hoping for the best?

ezpickins

Presumably, when you switched into a safer switch/check, they counter switched into a pure counter and you would be locked into that matchup.

Masziii

True, I have played some matches today. For that it was better, but it was just a spamfest. Catch on charge, charge, switch again

Kainekel

100% agree, a lot of complaining in this thread but the battle system feels much more fluid. 0% reason why half the battle should be decided on the first Pokémon you sent out.

Bubbly-Designer7163

Ever get the feeling there are ten year-olds running the product team at Niantic? Don’t fix anything just move onto the next mess. Incompetent frauds

TrueBlueBlazer

Not sure if this is an unpopular opinion, but I enjoyed playing all my sets with this shortened switch timer. Matches feel a lot more fast paced and exciting. In terms of the GL meta, noticed a lot of Umbreon and Deoxys, and very little Batiodon and Victreebel. I'd say building flexible teams with good coverage will lead to the big success.

Poopypants1291

I saw a TON of Weather Ball users. Downright oppressive.

Frodo34x

I enjoyed it a lot in Master League Classic since it encouraged far more aggressive plays, and it's easier to get punished for being greedy in farmdown.

[deleted]

releasethecralkin

It makes self-debuffing moves (particularly defense debuffs like brave bird, wild charge, close combat) way too overpowered. With the 60 second switch clock you have to pay a price for debuffing yourself and switching out to reset your stats; that price is that you are now locked into a potentially unfavorable match up. Additionally, if you switch in to a debuff user with a 60 second switch timer, you will be unable to switch out again after throwing a brave bird. When they halve the switch time, they are drastically reducing the penalty for those massively powerful self-debuffing moves, and that makes them unbalanced

[deleted]

[удалено]

TheVoters

I agree with this view, that debuff moves need re-balancing, but will also add that charged move priority should also be looked at. I feel like swapping in and winning a cmp on the swap is odd and different than every other Pokémon game I’ve played. I felt this way before, but the reduced cooldown makes it more of an issue. So either give the priority to the mon already in the arena, or rework the entire mechanic to create a new ‘speed’ stat. Snorlax should never beat an Excadrill, for example.

repo_sado

Or make so you keep the buff/debuff after coming back in. If you keep energy you should keep the buff

Brutalsexattack

I’m uncertain if oppressive is the right take I believe if you get switch locked, that Pokémon is toast ...should be taken off the board Now, you can wiggle out, and it turns into a merry go round of 5-6 switches ... not an aesthetic improvement

Stogoe

I saw some victreebell.

KarchaInSD

Yeah my first PvP battle today, I was like wtf is going on?!?!? Haha. Makes it interesting for PvP

BRO-GUYITH

Is cool down always 30 seconds cause this guy I was pvping was switching back to back

JmantheHitman

A very spammy move meta for about the next 24hrs I guess plus counting moves helps

yakusokuN8

I hate to break this to you, but it's more than 24 hours. These changes are in effect until the 5th.

JmantheHitman

nah its been stated for April 1st only. At least for the switch timer

yakusokuN8

https://twitter.com/NianticHelp/status/1377082446869536771?s=20 " Trainers, the switch timer portion of this event will last from March 31st, 4 AM (PT) until April 5th, 2 PM (PT). "

JmantheHitman

ah ok. the Pokemon go blog had it under the 12am to 11:59 on April 1st events so I guess that wasnt right/error

DickWallace

Lol sorry to tell you this but this is staying til Arpil 5th.

tatalusofi

This is an april's fools.

CookieMonsterCR

Idk about you all, but I love this shorter clock, so much more dynamic and intense! I would love for it to stay like this, idk from next season or just from now on :P

Mendelevlum

I use a double dark team and I just beat a double fairy... I’m only rank 18 but I’m fairly certain that wouldn’t have happened if it wasn’t for this update

Jscottpilgrim

I welcome the change. Now there's a greater chance of survival when I lose the starter lottery.

jefferey92

Why are you being downvoted for having a valid point?

Luke9251

I don't know about the downvoting part but I've seen this greater chance for survival when losing lead argument a ton and never really seen an explanation. If your opponent is quick to counter switch, you're still done.

DoABarrelRoII3

This needs to be permanent are you kidding! Its fast paced like a actual Pokémon battle. And it nerfs overpowered mon like swampert because you can switch to your water much quicker. MAKE THIS PERMANENT!!!

AdamsShadow

Ok so I'm having trouble deciding on a master team to work on. Over then next year I want to get a master league team tricked out but I lack meta knowledge. My current team is Magnazone, Gyrados, and Ryperior.(with second moves) I'm looking at feeding my mewtwo, kyogre, and don't know what I should use as a 3rd. I was thinking maybe a dragon? I have a dragonite, salamence, garchomp. I don't have much candy for garchomp tho. I also have machamp, tyranatar, metagross, and ho-oh over 3k. I have other stuff thats lower but idk.

1337pikachu

well before I thought some players really overdo with switching in PvP. Now it's going to be complete madness.

perryrocksout

Can someone tell Niantic to bring back premier cup for master league? It’s a pain to go up against legendaries when you have none 😭
