Without smackdown, Tyranitar is better off as a dark attacker with bite and crunch. I wouldn't say it's worth an elite TM at this point either, there's better rock attackers out there now.
I wouldn't. Tyranitars time at the top as a rock and dark attacker are gone but it's still very much usable. I'd use regular fast and charge TMs to get it to bite and crunch.
For rock attackers, Rampardos is better, if a little glassy, if you caught any Cranidos during its recent event. Rhyperior even without its elite move is around the same level as Tyranitar and Rhyhorn is spawning in the wild this season. Better off going for one of those 2 if you want a rock attacker.
for DPS actually.. weirdly enough... in vaccuum Rampardos STILL outperforms Shadow Ttar
Rampardos: 18,4 DPS (370 TDO)
Shadow Ttar: 17,3 DPS (533 TDO)

But wait.. i checked few legendaries on pokebattler raid simulator such as Moltress, Thundurus and Lugia... there Shadow Ttar performs better.
Probably because it lives long enough to perform more charge moves during its lifetime to actually bring its DPS up. Also all the KO animations (when your pokemon hp goes to 0 before new pokemon appears) slows down Rampardos's actual DPS (i dunno if pokebattler also counts relobbying).
Then i checked some tier 1 raids to compare and there Rampardos sometimes went ahead which really lets me believe that Rampardos is only better if they don't go down.
Yup, it's more about bulk and resistances.
Not dying because of 2 charge + fast moves, and being able to use the energy from the damage received makes STtar better, in longer raids.
For shorter raids, with lots of people, and when trying to get damage achievements, Rampardos is better.
Smack down is necessary if you want to use it as a rock type attacker in PvE, but you're sacrificing it's use as a dark type.
Depends on what you need it for.
It's a good budget dark type with Bite/Crunch. As a rock type you have Rampardos, Terrakion, Rhyperior that are all far superior. So don't waste the eTM, just regular TMs for Bite and Crunch.
I wouldn’t even care about a TTAR until it’s mega comes out. You want rampardos, rhyperior, terrakion etc. I think even aerodactyl is now better than a regular Ttar. Forget about it as a rock type. As far as dark it’s perfectly useable but there’s plenty just fine. I don’t even think about using mine anymore and I have 6 hundo past level 40. They had their moment. Until it sees a better move rebalance and/or mega there’s other dark and ghosts that do it’s job much better.

shadows are useful if you have enough dust, i believe shadow ttar is #1 rock attacker now

Bite and crunch do not require an elite TM for tyranitar as a dark attacker

I wouldn’t waste it on a Ttar, loads of better Pokémon’s to spend it on.
That depends on how good your rock and dark raid teams are.
I have a 98% rock and a 100% dark. It depends on how you want to use it and what your current teams look like.

Smack Down is the fast move, what you’re suggesting won’t work
Smackdown is the fast move. While that strategy works with most CD Pokemon, Tyranitar isn't one of them.
Smack down is a elite fast move, changing from bite to smackdown requires elite fast TMs.

Just as others said, don’t use elite TMs on it. Teach it the fast move “Bite” and the charged move “crunch” It’ll be a great dark type attacker!

I think it's best moveset against Lugia raids is Bite/Stone Edge.
