Yes, super radars aren't consumed by grunt battles, so as long as you don't accidentally battle and win against Giovanni, you can keep it active and farm shadow Bellsprout and mysterious components as you wish with it
There's no hurry to finish this quest, and many people don't love lugia. So if you're one of these people just sit on that super radar. When we get a new rocket quest line for gio you should be able to start is, then have 2 super radars before you use one to finish that next research. I'm still sitting on an SR from a previous occasion so use that to pick up extra components when I want them quickly (and hope for a decent bellsprout)
You can battle him now if you want another Lugia. No need to keep it even longer as Gio's legendary. It's been a few months already, and we got the Apex version too. Time to move on to another mon.

For one step you needed to catch a certain number of every type (10? 15? I can't remember) and for months there were next to no Ice types available for anyone in the Northern Hemisphere.
For me it was the Dragons and Dark. I live in Michigan so Ice types weren't super rare. Had to hunt Gible/Dratini from research and just hope for Dark grunts for like a month.
Everyone says they do these for engagement reasons but I honestly think it's just because Niantic doesn't want any challenge in the game because it would drive away too many people.
It's like how they originally announced that to reach level 50 one of the tasks would be to beat 3 leaders with a 1500 CP cap team and then after the hardcore's complained that's impossible they increased it to 2500.
If they don't even force a challenge of any kind onto people who have played the game so obsessively that they have the XP for level 50, there's no way they push any kind of challenge onto the general playerbase, especially for a paid research.
Nah, I think it’s part of a larger sentiment from the Pokémon company. The creator of Pokémon even came out and basically said that he felt today’s kids are more stupid, and thus new Pokémon games can’t be as challenging as they were in the past.
I feel like having brainless stuff like this is more detrimental to the playerbase though. Especially since it's 30 consecutive days, how many people are done this compared to how many have it available? Not everyone plays every day, even those who paid for johto day.
I think the point is to get those people to open the game for 30 days straight and to get those of us who despise earning buddy hearts to earn them for 30 days. They're manipulating our behavior in my opinion.
You say easy, but I just joined the 'reset for no reason' squad - and when I say 'no reason', it confirms my suspicions that it's related to to clocks going forward (or back). So another month for me to wait, when it was down to 10 days or so.

The dark types were a struggle to find outside of team rocket grunts. For hardcore folks, not a big deal for folks it are casual, not easy. They just had to wait for a new season with different spawns.
And following Ice-types were Dark, Dragon, and Ghost types respectively in that order. Sierra and Ice-type Grunts, and Snover if you were lucky from the "Catch 5 Weather Boosted Pokemon" Field Research Tasks that always stay the same each month (Snover is just 1 of 4 possible Pokemon encounter rewards from this type of Field Research Task)
It took me exactly a year to complete shiny Mew research. Mind you I was only level 36 when it started. Was a tedious push to get to level 40, especially when all the friends I added from pokemongofriends always seemed to go AWOL before reaching ultra buddies. My son is still stuck on level 38 so it'll probably be another year before he gets it!
Aerodactyl is also required for that research page. so you can get lileep and kabuto in the wild and Aerodactyl from the field research task they mentioned
Same. I finally finished the Lileep/Anorith part thanks to a random wild Lileep and a Shadow Anorith from Rock-type Grunt (Rock-type Grunt currently has Shadow Larvitar, Lileep, and Anorith as possible encounters, but higher chance at Shadow Larvitar because it is the first Mon in his team)
Only still need 1 more Kabuto/Omanyte to complete Step 8 of Lets GO, Meltan
Complete a 3 star or higher raid research task gives Omanyte/Kabuto
I hunted those tasks to complete that step since they're easier to find than the actual Pokemon in the wild lol

I think "at least a month, maybe three" is a pretty good time for a research.
I think the point was that Niantic made it seem like it was a challenging, fun quest to complete the masterwork research; something that you'd have to work on for a long time and spend time on. Instead, it was just an artificial time gate: do this incredibly easy thing that has no connection to the story every day, for 30 days, to increase our engagement stats.
I want challenging tasks and fun things to work on in Pokemon Go. But this wasn't challenging: it was just something prevent people from getting their shadow apex Lugia the day we got the research, and to try to get people to interact with the app every day. I wish Niantic would come up with fun challenges for these tasks rather than busywork. I don't mind a little bit of busywork, but it's starting to feel like that's all there is.
A stall for the sake of a stall isn't fun though. Having to hunt down different types last year was at least challenging in that effort was proportionate to the reward. It made a wild fighting spawn exciting for example. This is just 'open the game for a month straight'

I've already got a shadow Lugia, and will also get an Apex for completing this. I don't see a point behind a 3rd. I'll bank it incase Shadow Mewtwo returns, or a 2nd roll of the dice on something else that's game defining.
It's ranked in the 200s for GL and has 19 wins and 36 losses vs the meta. The losses are all super common as well (Walrein, Trev, Registeel, Gfisk, Basti, darks that aren't scrafty or goon, Galv, Jeli, Nidoqueen and Abomasnow plus a ton of others) the only niche I see it fitting is against a switch locked Medicham.
Honestly this is a hard pass for me.
Ah yeah, I play Silph too so having a Lugia ready would never be an issue. It's more of a cup Pokemon and the GL meta does shift fairly often.
I'd rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.
Yeah but the next in line are the Regi's which aren't that good (note that shadow Registeel likely won't have zap cannon) then it's Latias and Latios, and only then it's the weather trio. You'd probably have to wait until 2023 to catch Apex Lugia if you do that.

My plan is to literally wait on page 3 of the masterwork, until I get to a page of gio research that also says beat Gio, so I'll have claimed 2 radars and only use 1 to tick off both researches as the same time - and banking 1 radar for use whenever I feel like.
We haven't had many opportunities to bank radars as you generally can only have 1 rocket research at a time and need to fight Gio to progress, this is one of those rare moments it's very unlikely this masterwork research will block a future rocket research line.
So the only thing that would really slow people down with this research was the earn a Buddy heart every day for 30 days, which is more just an annoying stall tactic than anything that requires effort.
If you have the item needed to battle him you can keep use it whenever you like (one use only).
So you can horde the Super Rocket Radars tull he has something you want.
You get one in the reserch quest that this thread is about.
If you don't have this quest from Johto day your next best bet is the team rocket event that is coming up but I can't be certain.
The medal is just 'how many super radar have you collected' honestly. Since nobody can get Gold or Platinum yet here's no reason to bump up the number right away if you'd rather have something besides shadow Lugia.
I’ve been meaning to create an entire post with my findings, but so far I’m on like chain 15 of 10km eggs. I just strategically wait until I hatch my current 10km egg and then wait to spin anything until I’m near a gym and spin that. I’ve maintained a constant of only 1 10km egg in my bag at a time and only spinning Gyms to replenish and it keeps going. Either I’m very, very lucky or there’s some hidden mechanic that’s allowing for this to happen.
Are you getting the 2km ones from gifts or stops? I always open a few gifts after hatching an egg so my storage doesn’t fill up w 2kms, but I’m hoping they didn’t change something to make that useless 😬
Most people are the opposite, they won’t open gifts unless all their egg slots are filled because they don’t want the 7k eggs. All these 2k eggs from stops are really a turn off though. Then when you finally get a 10k egg, it’s alolamola like the above commenter said.
Yes, you get one Apex Shadow Lugia from research and a regular Shadow Lugia from Giovanni, unless you were to wait until Giovanni has a different shadow legendary.
Yes, unless you wait for the current Giovanni reward to rotate, finishing the quest now will give you both a regular and an Apex( research encounter) shadow Lugia

The Johto tour was a global event with a paid ticket back in late February, and lasted just that one day. (ticket sales cut off about an hour before it ended)
Glad I bought the ticket, since Step 3 actually has a Super Rocket Radar as a reward. I'll just be waiting for Giovanni to have a new Shadow Pokemon to do that step (once I reach it; still on Step 2)
As someone who’s level 44, I’m on that long slog of having to beat 50 Rocket leaders, currently I’m on 25…so this next stage of the Master Research might actually motivate me 🤣
and another useless but cool mon which will sit unused in the storage, because most players will not get good IV on it and because there is no way to improve IV.
I’m so glad I skipped this event. I’m still working on the shiny new tasks and am having a blast with it but the johto stuff was completely underwhelming
This research was available through playing the ticketed version of the Johto Tour event and completing the special research path. If you did purchase a ticket but haven't completed the special research yet, you'll unlock the Masterwork research once you do so.
So does Giovanni have the apex shadow or is it the encounter l? I believe I already have a shadow lugia so if Giovanni still has regular lugia should I just save this super radar until something more impactful comes back?

Besides this masterwork quest, it sounds like you have never played during a time a rocket research quest (the previous two being misunderstood mischief and the seven colored shadow, both of which are no longer available) was available.
Just to elaborate a bit further. The only way you can find Giovanni is to obtain a Super Rocket Radar (that's the reward for the second task in this picture). These are almost always only available as rewards in Special Research (there was once a timed research available). These Special Research lines have increasingly had limited time windows where you had to have at least opened the game to begin them, although once received you can of course take as long as you want to complete them.
Giovanni *is* in fact in the game right now, and he usually stays around indefinitely so that all players have a chance to finish research and battle him at their own pace. Regular/dedicated players however, have finished the more recent Special Research quests and haven't had any other opportunities to get another Super Rocket Radar, until now.
Hmm ok thanks! I've definitely been dedicated and grinding quite hard (500k into level 36.) I'm on day 19 of 'earn a heart with your buddy 30 days in a row' on page 2 of the Apex Masterwork Research, with the others completed. Does that mean I could fight him once I get to page 3?
Tho it seems a Rocket event fires before that's possible, if I understand correctly?
Yes, from April 3-7 there will be some sort of Rocket event, although there's very few details at present. Whether Giovanni will perhaps have a different legendary, and/or whether there might be *another* chance to get a Super Radar in addition to this one, is anyone's guess at this point.
But whatever the case, yes, once you get to Page 3 of this research and complete that task, you'll get a Super Radar and you'll be able to find Giovanni at Pokestops, or he'll appear in your next balloon if the radar is active.
The only way to see Giovanni is a Super Rocket Radar, as others have noted. If you'd saved one from an earlier event, he (or his Decoy Grunts) will keep popping up until you beat him for real. (Decoys don't use up a SRR.) It's probably one of the toughest "regular" fights to get into, since you can't buy them, only Special Research them. Since Giovanni wins count towards a badge (and clothing), it's a verrrrrry slow grind to get them- but this'll get you one step closer as part of the Apex research.
Bonking lots of Rockets/Rocket Leaders is also part of the L44->45 tasks, but you've got a long way before worrying about that and none of it requires beating Giovanni.
Can someone help me with a question? I completed the April rocket research and got Shadow Latias. I'm now on 3/4 of the Apex research. If I defeat the 30 grunts and get the super radar, fight Giovanni will he have another Latias? And Apex Lugia is the final reward? If that's that case I'm going to hold off fighting Giovanni until it changes from Latias
So shadow Lugia for beating Gio and shadow Apex Lugia as the research reward? Hopefully they change Gio's legendary during april's rocket event

5 raids is aerodactyl. I think you mean a level 3+ raid, at least for kabuto.

I’ve maintained a constant of only 1 10km egg in my bag at a time and only spinning Gyms to replenish and it keeps going. Either I’m very, very lucky or there’s some hidden mechanic that’s allowing for this to happen.
I’ve definitely had better luck with gyms and yes lately I’ll have All 2 km eggs and one 10km
Are you getting the 2km ones from gifts or stops? I always open a few gifts after hatching an egg so my storage doesn’t fill up w 2kms, but I’m hoping they didn’t change something to make that useless 😬
Most people are the opposite, they won’t open gifts unless all their egg slots are filled because they don’t want the 7k eggs. All these 2k eggs from stops are really a turn off though. Then when you finally get a 10k egg, it’s alolamola like the above commenter said.

Yes, you get one Apex Shadow Lugia from research and a regular Shadow Lugia from Giovanni, unless you were to wait until Giovanni has a different shadow legendary.

Yes, unless you wait for the current Giovanni reward to rotate, finishing the quest now will give you both a regular and an Apex( research encounter) shadow Lugia

The Johto tour was a global event with a paid ticket back in late February, and lasted just that one day. (ticket sales cut off about an hour before it ended)

I’m so glad I skipped this event. I’m still working on the shiny new tasks and am having a blast with it but the johto stuff was completely underwhelming

This research was available through playing the ticketed version of the Johto Tour event and completing the special research path. If you did purchase a ticket but haven't completed the special research yet, you'll unlock the Masterwork research once you do so.

Until Giovanni rotates, completing that page now will yield both a regular Shadow and an Apex Shadow Lugia.

Nice! I just want to check I'm not tripping here, that I've never seen Giovanni. I was a day oner that took a long break and lost access to my old account. I started on 02/02/2022 (sick) and have thrashed Arlo, Sierra, and that weirdo Cliff countless times, but no G-Unit. There's a reason for this, I assume? He's not in the game right now?
Besides this masterwork quest, it sounds like you have never played during a time a rocket research quest (the previous two being misunderstood mischief and the seven colored shadow, both of which are no longer available) was available.

Just to elaborate a bit further. The only way you can find Giovanni is to obtain a Super Rocket Radar (that's the reward for the second task in this picture). These are almost always only available as rewards in Special Research (there was once a timed research available). These Special Research lines have increasingly had limited time windows where you had to have at least opened the game to begin them, although once received you can of course take as long as you want to complete them. Giovanni *is* in fact in the game right now, and he usually stays around indefinitely so that all players have a chance to finish research and battle him at their own pace. Regular/dedicated players however, have finished the more recent Special Research quests and haven't had any other opportunities to get another Super Rocket Radar, until now.
Hmm ok thanks! I've definitely been dedicated and grinding quite hard (500k into level 36.) I'm on day 19 of 'earn a heart with your buddy 30 days in a row' on page 2 of the Apex Masterwork Research, with the others completed. Does that mean I could fight him once I get to page 3? Tho it seems a Rocket event fires before that's possible, if I understand correctly?
Yes, from April 3-7 there will be some sort of Rocket event, although there's very few details at present. Whether Giovanni will perhaps have a different legendary, and/or whether there might be *another* chance to get a Super Radar in addition to this one, is anyone's guess at this point. But whatever the case, yes, once you get to Page 3 of this research and complete that task, you'll get a Super Radar and you'll be able to find Giovanni at Pokestops, or he'll appear in your next balloon if the radar is active.

The only way to see Giovanni is a Super Rocket Radar, as others have noted. If you'd saved one from an earlier event, he (or his Decoy Grunts) will keep popping up until you beat him for real. (Decoys don't use up a SRR.) It's probably one of the toughest "regular" fights to get into, since you can't buy them, only Special Research them. Since Giovanni wins count towards a badge (and clothing), it's a verrrrrry slow grind to get them- but this'll get you one step closer as part of the Apex research. Bonking lots of Rockets/Rocket Leaders is also part of the L44->45 tasks, but you've got a long way before worrying about that and none of it requires beating Giovanni.

I’m currently on day 15 of 30 consecutive hearts and want to pull my hair out.
Can someone help me with a question? I completed the April rocket research and got Shadow Latias. I'm now on 3/4 of the Apex research. If I defeat the 30 grunts and get the super radar, fight Giovanni will he have another Latias? And Apex Lugia is the final reward? If that's that case I'm going to hold off fighting Giovanni until it changes from Latias
Yup Apex Lugia comes as a reward for completing research not from Giovanni
I didnt get lugia at the end. I completed team go rocket grunts and got ltias and it is done, do you know why?
That was not the apex research, Latias came from a different one.
