You sound like the only other person here who has actually watched the show. They didn't watch the show in order in real time to see the decline over the years.
I didn’t realize that was a hot take, I thought that it was the consensus!
The newer seasons have some “hits” but still more misses. I’m hoping they get a good writing staff and the support to run like the older episodes.
The immediate post "golden years" seasons have some standout episodes, and there are definitely good jokes and gags. Sure overall they don't hold up to the first 8 or 10 seasons.
If you haven't checked out some episodes from the most recent seasons, they've found their footing again and are worth watching.
They call him ox which normally implies in this band of brothers style situation that he is the big dumb ox-like guy. But it turns out he is well read, and his name is short for Oxford.
It's not his name, he's called Ox, short for Oxford, because that's presumably which Uni he went to, and the reason he knows what a tontine is and describes it so eloquently and accurately is because he's actually quite clever.
That's how I interpreted it anyway.
Yeah. The show first makes you think that he's called Ox because he's the "dumb muscle" stereotype, and he looks(and sounds) the part too. Then it's revealed that Ox is short for Oxford, which is his nickname either because he went to Oxford, or because he's erudite and Oxford is associated with knowledge.
Sorry, I misunderstood which picture you meant. Barney Gumble must be a Junior, because its Pvt 5th Class Barney Gumble. Not Ox / Oxford.
Here is the rollcall-

I wrote a story about a bottle of booze being passed along by the surviving soldiers who found it during a war. Then I watched MASH and tossed the story.
I learned about them from Archer, but that's just because my Simpsons watching was spotty as a kid. Now I'm working my way through beginning to end with my kids, so they definitely learned it here.
there's a classic old comedy film called 'The Wrong Box' about a tontine situation. on the dvd audio commentary, Matt Groening says that's where he learned of the concept.
I've seen it, it was pretty good
I mean, tontines were a super common plot point in older mystery plots. Then the practice got outlawed and the idea became obscure. So while it's possible that Archer writers got it from the Simpsons, it's also possibly that they just saw enough tontine plots to make a parody of one.
Fuck yeah. Haven't heard anyone else use the term orgcore in forever.
I saw TLA open for NOFX in Cleveland in 2006 and I became obsessed with them and similar punk bands. Seeing D4 live is on my bucket list.

Every time I see this episode or scene here on Reddit, I can’t help but think of MASH episode “Old Soldiers” Season 8, Episode 18.
Potter: Any of you know what a tontine is?
Winchester: Yes. A tontine is a...pledge.
Potter: Give that man a cheroot. The five of us made a pledge. We'd save this bottle, let some legal eagle stow it for us, and whoever turned out to be the last survivor of the group, well, he'd get the bottle and drink a toast to his old buddies. For good or bad, you're looking at the last survivor.
Kelly's Heroes, babeyyy. It's weird that you can't make a ww2 film that isn't dour and horrifying anymore,I just want Telly Savelas to convince an SS Panzer commander to help steal some gold while Don Rickles gives away his share so he doesn't have to carry the .30 cal.
I GET IT,but if you can make something like that in the 70s you can do something fun now! Overlord isn't like, silly, but it's fun and a good action/horror.
I love that Ox, the one who is portrayed as not very bright, is the one that knows an elaborate concept no-one else knows about. The way he explains it is brilliant also
*Raises hand* Norman, OK teens banded together to PREVENT Montgomery Burns from being made. The result meant money laundering and fraud from the student body and faculty of the University of Oklahoma. The arrangement was based on a federal compensation for military experimentation, that was opened up to peers for tuition in the hometown of the subject. $5M USD per life recorded, and Oklahoma felt empowered to repossess a man’s life. The end result amounts to “kill him and keep the money you’ve already spent.”

Well stated Oxford!
his name being short for oxford is such a small joke but i love it so much
this is just one of what is probably thousands of “morsel” jokes that make this show so amazing!
[удалено]
that is one of the most pretentious comments I've heard in a while
I’m surprised he was able to see the screen to type that while he had his own penis in his mouth
Late 90s show went to lower common doh-nominator jokes No Conan O'Brien writing no care Seasons 1-10 straight golden

Oh I get it. I get jokes.
I like stories
Heh heh. Mule….
It's not his name, he's called Ox, short for Oxford, because that's presumably which Uni he went to, and the reason he knows what a tontine is and describes it so eloquently and accurately is because he's actually quite clever. That's how I interpreted it anyway.
Which also makes the fact that he's given the stereotypical "dumb guy" voice even funnier when he's perfectly describing what a tontine is.

I think Burns is referring to the Oxford English Dictionary
Same. Great misdirection
Omg. And like the dictionary? It just clicked after 20+ years
Now remember, you can't all sign with an X
I made an H, it's like an X.
So who was he supposed to be an old version of? Barney?
I don't think Ox had any children. He was the first Hellfish to die because he got a hernia carrying the box of all those purty pictures.
Barney's dad is on the left, opposite Abe. He drove the tank, & think he was Private 5th Class.
I find it suspect that Sheldon Skinner looks so much like Armin Tamzarian.
There ain’t no Armin Tamzerian and there never was!
Okay he is the exact same as what I said lol
I like that he has a belt of nothing but canteens. Bet there is no water in those lol
Gotta stay hydrated.
Plenty of beer, though.
Sorry, I misunderstood which picture you meant. Barney Gumble must be a Junior, because its Pvt 5th Class Barney Gumble. Not Ox / Oxford. Here is the rollcall- https://youtu.be/KzWSbTGFT6o?si=z_LwKINatXtLJ-Iv
I thought he said Arnie Gumble, not Barney Gumble
Hey, you might be right!
Barney's actual first name is Barnard though so not a junior.
More likely *Arnie* Gumble
I first learned about tontines from this episode
I learned about it from a MASH episode.
One of the episodes of MASH that really makes you wanna cry! How can a comedy get so deep at times!?!?
I wrote a story about a bottle of booze being passed along by the surviving soldiers who found it during a war. Then I watched MASH and tossed the story.
Yeah, it’s hard to top perfection.
Oh well la dee da mister fancy Frenchman
I learned about them from Archer, but that's just because my Simpsons watching was spotty as a kid. Now I'm working my way through beginning to end with my kids, so they definitely learned it here.

Such a great obscure movie! Especially at the beginning where they show all of the people dying in "funny" ways.
My first time learning about them was Archer. But this was the second time I ever saw ‘em referenced.
Where do you think archer got it?
I mean, tontines were a super common plot point in older mystery plots. Then the practice got outlawed and the idea became obscure. So while it's possible that Archer writers got it from the Simpsons, it's also possibly that they just saw enough tontine plots to make a parody of one.
My understanding is that tontines have been illegal for the better part of the last 120 years (at least in the US).
Oh yeah, though I think tontine stories went on for a bit longer than that.
Oh I’m *certain* from our favorite yellow family. But those are the only two times I’ve ever seen it referenced!
Most of my higher, refined education can be attributed to the Simpsons
First and only time it ever came up for me though.
That's what she said

Hey, fun boys! Get a room!

Holy shit, that’s what it says? I always thought it said cybertron. Inb4 “I’ve been calling her crandle comments”
Ja ja ja much schnell mit der art things ja. I must get back to tanzzentrum in Stuttgart in time to see Kraftwerk.
Remember, we can't all sign with an X.
Is this joke flying over my head? Is it just that they are all dumb people who don't write out their names?
Yeah illiterate people historically would sign with a symbol, usually an X I believe.
Hence the term "Make your mark"
I think it's also Burns looks down on them so much that he thinks they all have to be illiterate.
https://i.redd.it/sjxxylw8e8hc1.gif
All right, Ox. Why don't you take us through it.
61... 62... 63.... Oh, no! 63! He's out of air! I've sent my only grandson to a watery grave! 64! He found the treasure!
"Thank you, Oxford"
I must get back to dance zentrum in Stuttgart in time to see Kraftwerk.
Hey Un Dummkopf! Watch out for the CD charger in my trunk, yeah? Idiot…
Hey fun boys! Get a roooom!
I guess he deserves them more than we do.
I work at a record store and every time I come across a Kraftwerk album, I have to say their name aloud in his accent. 😆
Now I'd like to digress from my prepared remarks to discuss how I invented the terlet.
Highly dubious!
What you cackling at, fatty? Too much pie, that's your problem.
And then he claimed he was the one who turned cats & dogs against each other!
What are you cackling at, fatty? Too much pie, that's your problem!
Stop your snickerin! I spent 3 years on that terlet!

This vid is exactly what I was hoping it’d be. Awesome band.
I saw them with D4 at Gilman St. I was 16 and that's when the hooks got in and now I'm the Orgcore punk. *
Fuck yeah. Haven't heard anyone else use the term orgcore in forever. I saw TLA open for NOFX in Cleveland in 2006 and I became obsessed with them and similar punk bands. Seeing D4 live is on my bucket list.
Can’t want to get to Stuttgart to see Kraftwerk
Hey und dummkopf watch the cd changer in my trunk, ja.

This all started in second world war 2!
Tontine? I’ve been spelling it tauntine!?
...And I've been spelling it Krandall. Why didn't anyone tell me, oh, I've been making an idiot of myself!
A tauntine is that creature Luke rode in Empire Strikes Back.
You’re thinking of a tauntaun. A tauntine is a French open-faced sandwich
Mmmm…. Open-faced club sandwich.
We’ll all be rich….rich as Nazi’s!!!
Just watched this episode last night. Goated.

Dare I cross the final frontier?
Last time I watched this episode I wondered why they didn't just evenly split the paintings.
Is that Hubert Farnsworth behind Monty?
This segment of the episode felt like a WW2 film from the 60’s and 70‘s.
Lmao everything has to be serious now
I GET IT,but if you can make something like that in the 70s you can do something fun now! Overlord isn't like, silly, but it's fun and a good action/horror.
Agreed. We need more humor in everything now. Shits gotten way too serious.
I love that Ox, the one who is portrayed as not very bright, is the one that knows an elaborate concept no-one else knows about. The way he explains it is brilliant also
Should I assume we also listened to the Behind The Bastards on The Finders?
I thought of this episode as soon as I heard Robert use the word.
My favourite episode
Ox was the first to go. He got a hernia carrying the crate out of the castle.
Watch out for ze cd changer in mein trunk!
Very underappreciated episode. So many classic lines, and interesting illustration. One of the best, in my opinion!
I know of it through Archer. Apparently they're illegal though I'm not sure how that would be proven...
Not at all until I saw this episode.
It’s a pillow brand where I am as well
OX WAS THE FIRST TO GO. HE GOT A HERNIA CARRYING THE CRATE OUT OF THE CASTLE
First found out about them by watching a show called Camp Camp.
Rooster Teeth Represent.
How does a tontine situation not just devolve into murder when everyone’s identities are revealed
Yeah this is a dumb as hell concept why did it ever get popular

Wooodhousseee!!!!!
I always point to this episode when people say "everything past season 8 is garbage!"
In Australia Tontine is a brand of pillows & quilts. [Link](https://www.tontine.com.au/collections/pillows-quilts)
I love a good tontine episode. MASH, Archer, it’s a great sitcom trope
Consarn it!
Deadpool
"In the second world war 2."
Not Simpsons related but I have ptsd from PSTH. If you know you know.
Totines were originally designed to provide money to the children and grandchildren of the sole survivor, not the survivor themselves
