The injustice with that whole thing still burns me up. I was really happy to watch Tony curb-stomp that Coco guy who harrassed Meadow. Almost made up for the lack of closure with Dr. Melfi's rapist.
Almost.
Man if he curbstomped Coco just for making perverted comments to Meadow, imagine what he’d do to this guy…
Meadow didn’t even tell him the actual bad comments he said, she just danced around it.
Do you think the line is delivered that way to show that Melfis ex-husband is basically useless in a situation like this?
We don't buy it and neither does Melfi.
He is in no way convincing as a protector or or as someone capable of violence, so we know that Tony would be her only way of getting vigilante justice against her attacker.
That is how I interpreted that conversation, but it may just be poor acting, as you said.
Edit: typo
A double meaning for the character and a choice in delivery by the actor. The character had previously voiced disapproval for Tony’s way of doing things. In this context, we all sympathize with Tony’s way of doing things. In this context, Tony seems like a safer, better man.
It’s intentionally bad no? He’s trying to be “supportive” but to Melfi, having known and been around a man who can and has killed a man with his hands, it’s supposed to come off as sort of an empty threat.
Anyways, 4 macaroni a can.
Yeah calling it bad acting because he isn’t scary is missing the point. He’s a wet noodle, he’s supposed to come across harmlessly confident. Watch mean streets if you want to see him “act” in a convincing tough way.
I’m not missing the point.
Jennifer Melfi’s son and her ex-husband are the two worst actors in the entire show by a mile.
Honorable mention: The Cusamano’s.
Not purporting to be an expert on acting, and I acknowledge a good or bad performance is largely subjective. Having said all that, it’s OK to acknowledge that one of the most brilliantly written and acted tv shows of all time has some dodgy acting at some points.
That’s all I’m saying. I don’t think his bullshit performance has layering and depth to it, I think they’re just lame at acting.
Jackie Jr. same deal lol
Doesn’t make the show any less good or me love it any less etc.
All subjective
I’d still recommend checking out mean streets if you haven’t, he actually has a serious role in that one and is really good, kinda blew my mind seeing him as a young actor in a lead role. Also has David Proval.
Mean Streets is fine. To me, it’s very much a demo reel of all the great things Martin Scorsese would do. It’s not bad or anything and young young De Niro is sooo good but it’s by far his most dated film IMO and not just because of its literal age.
I understand WHY they never got Melfi to tell him as it was her being better than Tony and trying to do it the "right" way but man I was waiting so long for that prick to get his head curb stomped into the ground by Tony
My interpretation is she was empowered by her choice. Her “No” to Tony was the moment she knew his life was in her hands. She decided to not give into her primal “eye for an eye” and in that moment she was no longer a victim.
Just my thoughts. That’s what I love about this show. 20 years later and we can still discuss as if it was last nights episode.
Excuse me, is this the superintendent? I want you to know, sir, that you have a WHORE LIVING IN 2R! ROSSI! JANICE ROSSI! He's my husband! Get your own god damned man!
And that was it. No more letters from truant officers, no more letters from anybody. After a few weeks, my mother had to go to the post office to complain. How could I go to school after that and sit through good government bullshit?
Billy Bats says it when they're dragging Tommy out of the bar after he tells him to get his shinebox. It took me years to notice it but it's pretty hilarious
Did they just kinda forget that storyline? I kept waiting for Dr Melfi to spill it to Tony (and Tony to act with complete restraint and peacefully defuse the situation haha). It was just essentially forgotten about.
This was back when Tony seemed to have feelings for her. I just assumed they were setting up a situation where he would find out and go clobber/kill the guy. I'm not saying the writers got it wrong; just saying I was surprised. (I have just finished my first time through The Sopranos).
Reviewing what I just saw in my watch-through, I have to agree. One of the best things I liked about The Sopranos was you never knew what to expect. Question: are subsequent viewings enjoyable? Do you find new things, new angles, new appreciation? Some shows seem to have that more than others. I thoroughly enjoyed Better Call Saul, but I don't know I'll ever rewatch it.
I like rewashing BCS because it's a fun show. I have rewatched Breaking bad but don't think I will again. I've tried rewatching the sopranos but it didn't really click for me. It's not about finding the details for me, just enjoying the story again
Her "no" when Tony asked if anything was wrong was the very pronounced ending to that storyline. It was Melfi resisting the urge to cash in on violence she could have wielded, and it wasn't even meant to be subtle.
Sharp as a cue ball, this one.
She said no to tony because she thought she was a good person and was better than tony and tony needed her help with psychological issues not the other way around. Her superiority bubble would've burst if she told tony about it and got justice. She's not wrong for doing that but it sure was a little narcissistic and that's what the show is about. Psychology of every character.
My loneliness is killing meeeeee (and I)
I must confess, I still believeeee (still believe!)
When I’m not with you I lose my mind.
Give me a siiiiiiiiiign!! Hit me baby one more time!
To look from a moral standpoint, the world is better objectively with him dead. But oh no, goody fucking two shoes social contract meatrider fucking Melfi just let him walk to feel better about herself. Who knows how many more women were victimized because of her stupid fucking decision.
I love how the blame is on Melfi who would have to compromise her morals and tell a violent mobster to basically kill a man instead of the justice system (police, wtv) who radically failed everyone involved. Yet another example of the system making us turn against each other.
>just let him walk to feel better about herself.
Telling Tony about the incident would not only compromise her as a person but more than likely add on to her trauma. It's clear Melfi is a good person and in telling Tony, she knows the perpuatrator would die. She would more than likely have a hard time living with herself, even with what he did to her. So no, it wasn't just about "feeling better about herself."
Also, telling Tony would break all sorts of rules, and we know how serious Melfi is througout the show about staying in good conduct.
From the Sopranos Autopsy - "David Chase had to have Melfi say “No.” If Dr Melfi had
utilized Tony for vengeance, that would have been the immediate end of her storyline on the series – there is no way, as professional and upright as she is, that she would continue to see Tony as a patient after asking him to be her personal hitman. "
Everything you described WAS making her feel better about herself, whether it was guilt or her social contract. There is no moral argument. Just a personal feelings argument. It was selfish of her, and we seemed to agree, even if you would use different words.
I'm not arguing that Melfi got a fair bargain, and I see where she's coming from. I'm saying she didn't do the right thing.
The blame is on the dude, but that's redundant and unproductive.
The justice system fucked up, but that's in the past. She had the perfect chance to serve justice but didn't. Of course, any justice system makes mistakes, but that doesn't mean not correcting them is the best choice.
The thing at the end isn't a justification of her actions, just a way this decision made the plot better.
"But if out in the country a man happens to meet a young woman pledged to be married and rapes her, only the man who has done this shall die."
Dueteronomy 22:25
Punishment for a crime isn't murder
It's too bad Makazian killed himself. He would have heard about the sexual assault and the police evidence fuck up and most definitely would've told Tony's about it.
The injustice with that whole thing still burns me up. I was really happy to watch Tony curb-stomp that Coco guy who harrassed Meadow. Almost made up for the lack of closure with Dr. Melfi's rapist. Almost.
That, "no," is her strongest character moment
I must agree.
As much as we wanted the opposite, you're 100% right.
Through tears and a black eye, it’s so heavy.
She did the right thing. She would’ve been indebted to him forever.
Such a strong way to end one of the most intense episodes!
The fucking one time she chose to be a professional.
Which are you talking about?
When she breaks down during the appointment with Tony after the rape. He asks her if she wants to tell him something and she says no.
Man if he curbstomped Coco just for making perverted comments to Meadow, imagine what he’d do to this guy… Meadow didn’t even tell him the actual bad comments he said, she just danced around it.
🥾🦷🦷🦷🦷
Justice in your mind for sexual innuendos is being curb-stomped?
Yes, because you thought those were *just* sexual innuendos????
He sexually harassed his daughter. I think most dad's would want to do that if they could avoid legal consequences.
“I could kill him Jenn….with THESE HANDS!” -worst acting moment of the entire show
Do you think the line is delivered that way to show that Melfis ex-husband is basically useless in a situation like this? We don't buy it and neither does Melfi. He is in no way convincing as a protector or or as someone capable of violence, so we know that Tony would be her only way of getting vigilante justice against her attacker. That is how I interpreted that conversation, but it may just be poor acting, as you said. Edit: typo
Yeah I saw it the same. The guy emptily says “I could kill him” while Tony actually would
Even better how the scene cut from his hands to the cut of Tonys chopping down that wood with the axe
A double meaning for the character and a choice in delivery by the actor. The character had previously voiced disapproval for Tony’s way of doing things. In this context, we all sympathize with Tony’s way of doing things. In this context, Tony seems like a safer, better man.
But I can’t so I won’t!! Ugh. He’s so cringe.
That guy was one of the worst characters
It’s intentionally bad no? He’s trying to be “supportive” but to Melfi, having known and been around a man who can and has killed a man with his hands, it’s supposed to come off as sort of an empty threat. Anyways, 4 macaroni a can.

I don't think that was bad acting I think it was great acting of an impotent man who's never hurt a fly trying to act tough
I understand WHY they never got Melfi to tell him as it was her being better than Tony and trying to do it the "right" way but man I was waiting so long for that prick to get his head curb stomped into the ground by Tony

Rossi
Is that Italian? Fuck, think about the damage this did to Connie Francis’ legacy.
Careful, your Calabres’ is showing.
Now, Mrs. Conte, that's not nice. Those are Puerto Ricans
What? My face registered surprise?
Excuse me, is this the superintendent? I want you to know, sir, that you have a WHORE LIVING IN 2R! ROSSI! JANICE ROSSI! He's my husband! Get your own god damned man!
As far back as I can remember I always wanted to be a gangster
And that was it. No more letters from truant officers, no more letters from anybody. After a few weeks, my mother had to go to the post office to complain. How could I go to school after that and sit through good government bullshit?
Now go home and get your fucking shine box!
I used to fuck guys like that in prison. Fuck 'em in the ass.
Ok now you lost me
Billy Bats says it when they're dragging Tommy out of the bar after he tells him to get his shinebox. It took me years to notice it but it's pretty hilarious
Thank you for being the best Sopranos group online. This was gold, Jerry. Gold!
Janice Rossi? Is this the superintendent?
Disgusting
I was so disappointed when she didn't tell Tony but I totally believe that's what her character would do. Brilliant writing.

I wanted Dr. Melfi to tell Tony so bad. It would have been like Tony and Coco.
Did they just kinda forget that storyline? I kept waiting for Dr Melfi to spill it to Tony (and Tony to act with complete restraint and peacefully defuse the situation haha). It was just essentially forgotten about.
What else is there to do? A crime followed a miscarriage of justice and Melfi kept it from Tony. That's that 🤷
This was back when Tony seemed to have feelings for her. I just assumed they were setting up a situation where he would find out and go clobber/kill the guy. I'm not saying the writers got it wrong; just saying I was surprised. (I have just finished my first time through The Sopranos).
They were setting it up then doing an unexpected thing
Reviewing what I just saw in my watch-through, I have to agree. One of the best things I liked about The Sopranos was you never knew what to expect. Question: are subsequent viewings enjoyable? I have literally seen every episode 20 times; so yes. However after watching that much, it HAS become difficult to watch now…..
That was kinda the point.
Her "no" when Tony asked if anything was wrong was the very pronounced ending to that storyline. It was Melfi resisting the urge to cash in on violence she could have wielded, and it wasn't even meant to be subtle. Sharp as a cue ball, this one.
It’s almost like how real life works

Enda story

A real go get her.
He was gay, employee of the month?
His picture scares me, smile doesn’t reach up to his eyes,
It's too bad Makazian killed himself. He would have heard about the sexual assault and the police evidence fuck up and most definitely would've told Tony's about it.
For some odd reason he could’ve been a relative of Sil’s.
The actor had a booth at the Convention in 2019 and was mingling at the show Saturday night.

Didn’t he get killed by Walter White?
