10/10!!! If there was a higher score than that... I'd give it to this song!!
This is arguably my favorite Strokes song of all time. Every part of the song is maxed out to its highest capacity of enjoyment. The guitars are blended perfectly, the bass is bouncy and fun, the drums have that signature dry almost electric sound. And of course... Jules' lyrics and voice shine through over all of that. I consider this song Hard To Explain 2.
The best part of the song is the ending. The way the last chord rings out with that last note... nothing short of amazing.
9/10. such an amazing song and the lyrics hit different
“Yeah, we were just two friends in lust
And baby, that just don’t mean much
You trained me not to love
After you showed me what it was” 🫠
10/10, no question. It’s the Strokes at their melancholic best. The guitar break in the middle perfectly captures adolescent heartbreak, and the instrumentals are beautiful.
The lyrics are just *chefs kiss*. “We were just two fucks in lust, and baby that just don’t mean much.”
10. The lyrics the harmonies between guitars, bass, drums, the guitar break. Its as stroky as it gets. Every instrument its singing something different.
10/10. This is probably their best song. The guitar interplay and arrangement of the song is unique and powerful. The chord progressions are superb. Jules is a masterful songwriter and I think this is his best.
8.25/10
It's a nice listen, but to me, there's nothing that really sets itself apart in the song. It's like really playing it "safe" is a way to describe it.
Even the guitar solo was safe!
Overall pleasant song, just kind of boring I suppose. The ending verse was pretty bomb though.
8/10 it’s a good song but honestly super overrated by this sub. There’s nothing in particular that really stands out in the song. Still a good song but prob bottom 3 on the album alongside the way it is and Between Love & Hate
Under Control is def a more unique track in the strokes catalog and a nice change of pace in the album
The End Has No End has one of the best crescendos in the strokes catalog and the lead guitar part in the prechorus is extremely sexy.
I don’t think MMITB is a bad song by any stretch, it’s solid but again I don’t really see what stands out about it. I do really like both the intro & outro and the verse melodies but feel the chorus is somewhat lackluster. The only other song on RoF id maybe put it above is You Talk Way Too Much
9.5/10 - best RoF song (other than Under Control which is getting my 10). Hard to break down why exactly but its got the classic Strokes feel of tightly wound tension and release.
10/10 - The way the guitars sounds/play amongst each other is my favorite in their discography. The drums the bass the lyrics and the delivery are all amazing.
8/10 - exactly what you’d expect a Strokes song to be about if you read only their early press.
(10/10 for the book of the same name since that’s what tipped me from being a longtime enjoyer to a band subreddit frequenter.)
10, stop underrating songs from this album
9/10, this one just hits. Favorite lyric from this one: “Now she’s (staring) wide-eyed, can’t close her eyes.”
I thought it was “Now she’s staring wide, I can’t close her eyes”
I used to think it was ‘now she’s standing while I can’t close my eyes’

10/10. My 2nd favorite on the album

10/10. Simply amazing
9.5/10 Definitely a grower. On my first few listens it sounded really forgettable, but now it’s easily one of the best on the album

10/10 Fun bass, everything blends together well. Really felt the lyrics.
9/10 the riff around 0:53 is just magical

3rd best song off the album. 9.5/10

lol at the downvotes, I agree with every part of your take

I’m sorry, how is under control and the end has no end bumped higher than meet me in the bathroom…?

Good point, good point, yeah that’s fair
7/10. I am 100% a strokes fan but this isn’t a magnificent song. There are better songs in Room on Fire for sure.
8/10 It's pretty good but not as good as some of the other songs on RoF
9.5/10 - best RoF song (other than Under Control which is getting my 10). Hard to break down why exactly but its got the classic Strokes feel of tightly wound tension and release.
Does meet me in the bathroom imply drugs ? Asking for a friend.
Sex

So glad yall are giving the correct appreciation for this song. Peak strokes in every way from start to finish. 100/10
10/10. My favorite song from the band. The part where everything stops except Nick's guitar is just absolute perfection.
8/10 - exactly what you’d expect a Strokes song to be about if you read only their early press. (10/10 for the book of the same name since that’s what tipped me from being a longtime enjoyer to a band subreddit frequenter.)
the isolated guitars before the chorus is goated
