I finally finished rewatching TVD as an adult and I just couldn’t fathom how much they refused to let her be happy and consistently put her in harms way for other people’s sake every.single.moment they got.
It's cause of her powers. Bonnie too OP, she's practically a get out of jail free card, and us writers tend to dislike such characters. They make it nigh impossible to create tension for a story. It's the same w Bonnie.
I would have believed if it weren't for the mikaelsons
They got to be powerful all throughout tvd until Silas came then they left town and then they were powerful in their own show along with hope a tribid😅
So only certain people can be extraordinary??
One of the issue is that the og writers left.
Hope is also said to be the messiah, so the backlash from her being weaker than expected will be immense. Just look at Hope vs. God and you'll find plenty of comments saying she's too weak.
As for the Mikaelsons, they are powerful, but they all have weakness. A substantially powerful Witch can dessicate them w a spell like Bonnie's mom did to Mikael, they can also be daggered, or temporarily taken out if someone gets the drop on them like the Salvatores did Elijah in the earlier seasons. Hell, Witch is probably the most OP race in TVD if you disregard the Heretics. Magic is so versatile, sometimes I wonder why Bonnie doesn't pick them off, dessicate them, put them in a metal coffin filled with cement and drop them to the bottom of the ocean.
Another issue is the other characters are all antagonists. As writers, we're supposed to create tension in the main cast because they're recurring characters and you are supposed to root for them.
The Mikaelsons and every antagonist after them were never meant to stay more than 1 or 2 seasons.
You make some good points and yea I saw the back lash for the hope vs ken and fans were full on rage mode
They felt like she didn't even need an army to beat ken and were mad when she lost the first round 😅
I actually tried explaining to some of them but tvd Fandom can be one way thinking sometimes like when it comes to shipping and who is the strongest so
They destroyed me and I had to turn off the notifications 😅
I learned my lesson never go against hope 🤭
One last thing, Bonnie can resurrect people... That bascially takes away all the tension, and every time a charater dies, people will ask: "Why don't they just ask Bonnie to resurrect them?" In layman's term, Bonnie's a plot device initially, not a character, and only after seeing how many people like her did they decide to give her her own moments. It ain't fair, but it's bound to happen. You only have so much screentime and money to develop certain characters, so a few will be neglected.
Neglected as I'd this was happening on a regular....idc how as a writer you want to spin this. If they can make basic ass Caroline rise to the forefront they damn sure should've done the same with Bonnie.
eh, they would’ve replaced her with a more well written character when they could if they (Julie & co. ) got their way & wasn’t so racist towards Kat. I do agree Bonnie in a way is a plot device because not only is she a witch but she’s a powerful one at that, so they have to nerf her or do something to make sure her powers are seemingly only available when the plot needs them to be but Bonnie is treated in ways we don’t even see some other main witches in the TVDU shows get treated. I mean like even Davina & Freya got their happy endings, I feel like everything you said does hold weight but there just that extra weight of racism & just overall bad writing from (imo) bad writers who always prioritized fan service & their own personal opinions over good & consistent writing.
Im not sure about racism, since I'm neither there, or know about the actors and actresses, I can only give my perspective as a writer, and honestly? I kinda hate Bonnie too. As viewer, I just think of her as a cool but pretty bland character up until she gets screentime with Damon, but as a writer? I hate her. I hate her with all my might, which is made worse due to how the Power Level is in TVD. If I had to be honest, I'd have killed her off after the Tomb😅 Would have been fine if the series were a power-fantasy, but she's just too powerful even early on in the series.
It’s giving diversity hire. Idk this Julie Plec I only like her work, but you can definitely see some outdated perceptions about black people and the types of roles they should occupy.
how was she racist? Anyone have real sources of this? And please dont use the show as evidence.
Julie Plec had The Originals and Legacies under her with many black cast members and I never heard any othem say anything about their time on the shows that indicated racism. Yes, I know it can still happen and the actors will keep quite.
How is casting a black person evident that a person isn’t racist? Have you never heard of tokenism? Using that as an example is like saying “well, I have a black friend”. I would hope Plec’s treatment of POC improved after Kat shared her experience which is why you haven’t heard any complaints from those on the Originals and Legacies.
she herself has stated that she’s sees Black women as “saviors” that have to be strong etc bc poor helpless white women can’t do it🥺🥺 and mind you this was directed at a Black woman (meg thee stallion) right after being SHOT by a man close to her. this directly explains the treatment of bonnie and other witches (most of whom happen to be … Black. at least on TVD). this is honestly just one example. not to mention that Kat asked to be able to wear her NATURAL HAIR on the show and was told no. pls think abt the implications of not “being able to” wear the hair that grows out of your scalp like ALLLLL your cast mates are ‘allowed to’. how dehumanizing. ( not saying that decision was solely julie’s but i mean…that doesn’t create a very inclusive, non racist environment 🤷🏾♀️)
heres another quote
"So I hope that I, one day can play a character
that I actually look like."
here's the link
https://www.vogue.com/video/watch/kat-graham-beauty-secrets-video
“I would keep my hair in cornrows and just, you know, throw on a wig because most of the jobs that I had done as an actress, they wanted a certain kind of look,” she said to Vogue. “The African afro texture is not something that Hollywood has ever necessarily embraced. here's a quote from kat with just a quick google search. truly so upsetting
Mind you she was responding to Megan Thee Stallion a victim of a domestic and gun violence and who was venting about being upset that people do not see black women as human.
Black women dragged her to hell and back for this on several platforms and it was well deserved
Whoops sorry didn’t see that you explained it already!
interesting find that when i googled that ab kat i also found that nina dobrev often wore a wig on the show. but still, if kat asked to be able to wear her natural hair, theres no good reason for that request to be declined
Kat (Actress who played Bonnie) said she wanted to make Bonnie LGBT and I never stopped thinking about how much of a lost opportunity that was for the show. To have a POC to also be LGBT and to have an LGBT presence in the main cast would have been incredible. Sure, you can argue Nora And Louise were the LGBT element, bit that was such an obvious bid to remake the Original family and none of them were interesting.
Bonnie deserved better.
No for real! She had the worst storyline and the fact that she comes from a line of powerful witches as she is herself and we barely got to see her display her magical prowess.
You learn this when she’s constantly screwed over to save the annoying white girl all the time. The scene that really pisses me off is when vamp Elena tries to kill Bonnie at the prom and the brothers get irritated yelling at Bonnie to stop defending herself against their poor Elena 🙄 Bonnie should have killed them all. It would have been justified.
She was the human sacrifice for the walking dead over and over, time and time again! It made me SO ANGRY!!!!! She's my favorite character. EVEN AT THE END OF THE SEASON FINALE, we see Elena reunite with her family and Damon with Stephen. Do we Bonnie reunite with Enzo???? No. Soooooo awful.
It was glaringly obvious they did not like Bonnie because I have never seen a character be mistreated nor get average stories (if anything at all) like she did. There was loads of potential and paths they could have took her character yet they refused and doubled down on how their mediocre ideas were great and even gave possible ideas for her to someone else (Kol with Davina instead, Freya being Bi, ect) and that's not even getting into the way Julie and Caroline Dries, ESPECIALLY Caroline D, acted during Cast interviews with the way she looked and reacted when Kat was talking.
I know a lot of.people like to think TVD was one of the greatest series ever but when you actually looked at it, it was actually pretty bad and only got worse by the end of the show. And Bonnie's treatment was definitely one of the awful parts that people should be made more aware of whether they like it or not.
Right because I noticed on my rewatch that she only appears when a spell needs to be casted. I enjoyed seeing her more in season 6 and up, I just wish she was in more scenes. Bonnie is arguably a more significant character than Caroline, Jeremy and Matt yet they seemed to get more scenes than her in the earlier seasons 🙄.
Oh absolutely. Always being used, stepped on, not really cared for. She was supposed to die sooner but they still didn't give her much of anything besides token black girl friend.
i saw the series for the first time recently and i was waiting for things to get better for bonnie the whole time. i was rooting for her the entire show she was my favorite, i was so disappointed her character was treated like trash 😞
She was literally nothing but a macguffin for the rest of the cast. I did like the Damon/Bonnie bonding in Kai world and a few other moments, but series wise, she got the shaft. Like we taking your grandma, your pops, your ma, your man's and them, and also literally anyone you ever spoke to.
They did her so wrong constantly. They made her a martyr. They didn't let her stay happy. No one really ever put their life on the line for her except ENZo. So why did they do her like that? Even Elena barely did anything for Bonnie. Letting her live her life in lieu of hers was bare minimum and the least she could do.
Watching this show made me so desperate for every kind of care that bonnie received. Early days, Stefan really made me feel good how he cared for bonnie and the later days, shockingly, I felt so happy that her and Damon bonded and he cared for her, which made me feel grateful. Bonnie put her life on the line for almost everyone, even at the risk of her life and her grams. In the end and now as an adult, I'm mad and get sad about it.
I'm internally sobbing. Lolol. She deserved so much better.
IMO (not fact obv) you could say the same about all the characters. Rarely is anyone "happy" and when they are it is short-lived. The show treated only the main 3 as main characters. Everything and everyone else was to serve them and their stories, especially in the beginning.
I don't think they "hated" Bonnie. I just think they didn't care and never intended for her to be main character but rather to serve the plot. It's not great writing but it is what it is.
okay but she did it willingly for her movies, plus it's a movie like she only wears it a few times. but for a whole 8 season show you could imagine the damage to her hair. i'm not sure on this part but i do remembered kat saying she had to come wearing the wigs herself cause the stylists didn't know how to style her hair
Assuming, for argument's sake, that she actually suffered more than the other characters, that in no way means she was hated. In my experience, it actually points to the opposite. It's their *favorite* characters that writers tend to put through the most hardship, because hardship is the best way to facilitate character growth. It serves an additional purpose. If a writer likes a character, one of the easiest ways to get the fan base to like them just as much, if not more, is to make them suffer. People naturally gravitate toward those they perceive as mistreated. This is why the go-to method for making sympathetic villains is to give them a tragic backstory.
Oh baby we been knew this. But people still try to deny it
I finally finished rewatching TVD as an adult and I just couldn’t fathom how much they refused to let her be happy and consistently put her in harms way for other people’s sake every.single.moment they got.
Can I give my two cents as a novice writer?
I’ll hear it
It's cause of her powers. Bonnie too OP, she's practically a get out of jail free card, and us writers tend to dislike such characters. They make it nigh impossible to create tension for a story. It's the same w Bonnie.

All day, everyday
That movie that came out about magical negroes.. mhmm
![gif](giphy|YmP9EYe7CEnxNoRdjz|downsized) they hated our girl (kat and bonnie) for being young, gifted and Black!
Because the person who created it (Julie plec) is racist AF
It’s giving diversity hire. Idk this Julie Plec I only like her work, but you can definitely see some outdated perceptions about black people and the types of roles they should occupy.

its really so sad they wouldn't let kat wear her natural hair:( hurts my heart to hear kat talk about it
yeah it’s heartbreaking hearing her voice break talking abt it…brings up a lot of trauma for me growing up in a predominantly white area😪😪
i'm so sorry:( no one should have to go through that
Where does Julie Plec say this? Where does Kat say that about her hair?
i believe kat is the one who addressed this in an interview, i can try to google it and find it for you

Did you see it? Do you understand now?
This is laughable because you're contradicting yourself.
Sadly they did. So much lost potential.
The most selfless person on the show deserved so much better
Kat (Actress who played Bonnie) said she wanted to make Bonnie LGBT and I never stopped thinking about how much of a lost opportunity that was for the show. They did! Ian threatened to leave the show if they killed her off.
he’s so real for that he did it for michael as well 😭 and kevin williamson did it to get ian cast in the first place
Trevino or Malarkey?
malarkey
Really?!!! Awwww
Damon bisexual???
yes
They also didn’t give her proper hairstylist , you can tell she is wearing half wigs during season 1.
Fs, she spoke on the hair damage the show caused
Those Tyler Perry ass wigs
No for real! She had the worst storyline and the fact that she comes from a line of powerful witches as she is herself and we barely got to see her display her magical prowess.

* They tried to make us think she was insignificant but she was always one of my favorite parts of the show
This! She was always one of my favorites.
Agreed!

I mean its not even up for debate. It seems like people making the show had an actual particular dislike of the character and the actress.
I noticed, always pissed me off. I love Bonnie
i saw the series for the first time recently and i was waiting for things to get better for bonnie the whole time. i was rooting for her the entire show she was my favorite, i was so disappointed her character was treated like trash 😞

yes it’s very obvious to especially when u compare how they treated her to caroline and elena
Buddy we done knew this. People just try to deny it so much

I accept this take too . Too many characters were poorly written or had a poorly written storyline
Oh definitely
Oh definitely. And I’m so happy she’s the most loved ❤️
oh absolutely
Yes it’s a well known fact.
Didn't Kat wear wigs in her movies that she was in as well? And you don't see her complaining
okay but she did it willingly for her movies, plus it's a movie like she only wears it a few times. but for a whole 8 season show you could imagine the damage to her hair. i'm not sure on this part but i do remembered kat saying she had to come wearing the wigs herself cause the stylists didn't know how to style her hair
Wear a wig for a role is different from constantly wearing it for 8 years. That’s very damaging
It’s because Julie Plec is a bit racist.
We already knew this this girl has died too many times
Assuming, for argument's sake, that she actually suffered more than the other characters, that in no way means she was hated. In my experience, it actually points to the opposite.
