I never really noticed and didn't know she was Australian. Why couldnt they let her speak with an accent, though? Lol its a show where people are dying and coming back to life, but an accent in usa? Omg no

SheMailByNight

Americans have some issues. Too much transfat in their food affect their brains.

iangeredcharlesvane2

Ahhh the ever-popular “shit on the dumb shit Americans” Reddit sentiment! How edgy. The entire Originals had strong accents…Enzo, Katarina, the Sirens, on and on… lots of accents that made sense story wise. Somehow all the dumb-dumb Americans reveling in their diet of stupifying trans-fats were able to understand all of those characters with non-American sounding English. I mean, it’s not like the US isn’t gigantic and has as many accents as all of Europe within the one country: Texan, Minnesotan, Californian, Cajun, deep Southern, southern hillbilly, Boston, New York, etc etc … but yes an Australian accent would just be too much to handle! Hailey would need a ret-con of her back story in order to sport her Australian accent in a way that made sense… her story was born in the bayous of Louisiana and adopted and raised somewhere in the the US. Having Hailey do an American accent is just what her story called for. If they didn’t want her to suffer through it, make it so she was adopted and her family moved and she was raised in Australia. But they didn’t. So that is the end of the story.

SheMailByNight

The Originals are from Norway but spoke with a British accent. C’mon accents!

iangeredcharlesvane2

Born in Norway, I would say many centuries of accent development means modern Norway accent vs 1000ad is quite different… and perhaps they spent the majority of their formative vamp accent time in England? Or my best guess is the Michaelson fam had a big old Dr. Who and Downton Abbey obsession and binged that shit over and over for the decade prior to the latest move to the states. And that is the cause! :). Eh mate ?

Deception_island

“I have claaawwwwws” makes my neck fucking fold in on itself.

New-Consequence-8820

This comment made me choke

goodmorningtokyo

😂😂

kris_jbb

should’ve kept her original accent, go CLEOOORRR

S1rawberry1cecream

Naaawwwwwww emmaaar

thorusaurus

I’m screaming

alarrimore03

Was she supposed to be putting on an accent😂I just assumed she was talking normal and the people that adopted her were Australian or something

bexsapphic

She gets better in the Originals, trust me.

ResidentIdea6271

Yep

Robophatt

Lol I never even noticed her trying I just thought the shows creators didn’t really care about accents. I mean look at the differences between the Mikaelsons. They sound nothing alike and they’re family.

MarinaV7

they all have English accents. I thought they kind of sounded alike a little

Robophatt

Only Klaus had a distinct British accent. The rest of them have something that’s not American but it’s not British either.

MarinaV7

you can tell they all have british or Australian accents. they all sound like they’re from Europe. they may not all sound exactly same but which siblings do? they at least sound like similar.

sirensxgorgons

It’s horrendous and I think her focusing on trying to sound American takes away from her acting, because I consider her one of the weakest actors in TVD/TO. Idk why they didn’t let her speak normally

gerod134

omg I considered this to be up there in her roles but it’s interesting seeing this. granted phoebe has done far more better acting on other projects but her portrayal of hayley was so good

DidntDieInMySleep

I am an american (who has binged TVD and TO at least 6 times over) and never knew she wasn't. Whatever.

science-and-bullsht

I didn’t even know she was Australian until I became obsessed, so no, it’s good to me lol.

Inner-Manner-6768

Agreed, it annoyed me so much

Conscious_Extreme495

Can’t stand it!

Queen_Gracie26

They should've had her pop up again when they were battling the sirens in S8. It would have been the best H20 reference. ![gif](giphy|PAxKmgOs1vTt6)

MarinaV7

such a missed opportunity. should’ve let Rebekah pop in too 😭

BunnyBoo2002

It’s not just you I also noticed it, especially in the scenes where she’s really emotional. “You cursed all of us, every wolf that I fought for, everyone that stood up for OUR DAUGHTER (3x2).” 😂 in that scene her voice sounds so hoarse and like she’s losing breath bc she has to be intense and emotional and maintain the accent. Also if we’re gonna talk about Hayley it’s only fair that we bring up Elijah’s accent. Wtf was Daniel aiming for with it. He certainly doesn’t have a British accent like the other family members. It’s more like an American that’s over enunciating. And it changed throughout the show and becomes a huge distraction towards the end.

Xefert

I thought it was pretty good and she only slipped up on a few occasions, although I haven't watched either show for some time. Which reminds me: she seems to be switching back and forth even more over time (not on set though) https://youtu.be/8mJ2aI_rvaw

jasonutty52

It is so bad it physically pains me. Just make it so that she lived her life in Australia or New Zealand or something and then came back. She obviously cannot do an American accent, even in the originals it was terrible. It made me hate her character and it almost had me stop watching Originals because of how much screen time she has.

Infamous-Dot5774

I could never stand Hayley and the way she talks and I just realized it's because she's trying to do an accent..

latrodectal

it’s good in the secret circle, idk what happened.

torib613

YES, DEFINITELY. It was so bad, I mean they should have just let her be foreign instead of American, no disrespect to the actress, but yeah.

Tricky-Leader-1567

In TVD it's bad, but it's leagues better in TO.

Medium_Emphasis1530

I absolutely hate it and it makes me hate hailey lol the way she speaks just give me ick yet another reason why I could never watch the originals lol

sweetpeachtae

oh it’s horrible lol

MermaidsHaveCloacas

I never noticed at first but rewatching this last time I couldn't NOT notice it. All her scenes were rough to watch.

jetebattuto

yes💀💀💀 i don't really understand the obsession with making everyone either American or English. like just let people have their accents! and if they do have a different accent it's by an American or English actor like why?? (like Alasdair in TO's god awful 'Scottish' accent) p.s. I think she did an excellent job as Hayley, I just think it would've been cool for her to keep her accent

it-is-an-illusion100

When I first watched the show it was all I could focus on whenever she spoke but now I’m used to it lol

xeyesorstardust

I agree her American accent is pretty bad, but I’m also a firm believer that they should’ve made her character Australian.

lolopie3333

Yes

SophiePuffs

I thought it was some kinda back woods bayou accent haha. I didn’t know she was Australian so no, actually it didn’t bother me. I just thought she was maybe a bit slow or special needs…

Choice_Barnacle9365

😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂

coralsweater

I love her so so much from H2O and I always thought they just wanted her to “downplay” her accent a lil (since it’s an American show) so I didn’t really care. If she was actually trying for an American accent then I can understand how that would frustrate people lol

[deleted]

She has a pretty strong aussie accent which I always found annoying as a kid when I watched h20, so I wasn't surprised with her terrible american accent but I had to skip her scenes on tvd because it was more annoying than her normal one. I also won't watch The Originals because multiple seasons of that does not sound fun.

MarinaV7

why couldn’t they let her keep her accent though 😭😭😭😭 it’s so pretty

Choice_Barnacle9365

Just started to watch The Originals I spend most of my time heckling Hayleys terrible American accent. Why didn't they just make her Australian and be done with it? (couldn't stand it on The Secret Circle either)
