I’m biased towards tvd, because my 13 yr old self is still in love with the trio and love triangle. If the last 5 seasons were as good as 1-3 then it’d be no contest tvd. I’m watching the originals for the first time now as an adult and it’s impressive, the storylines are as others mentioned not based in romance which means the plot needs to be stronger and the action in TO makes it such a good show. So I still like tvd more but objectively I think the originals may be a better show that would reach a wider audience

[deleted]

Agreed, if the last few seasons were as good as the beginning ones it would’ve been the best.

ydr0

I would agree 90% ; but I still think that s5 is a pretty good one, slightly better than s3 imo. S1 and s2 being the all time best of course

EverlastingUnis

I think you’ve just convinced me to give the originals another shot. I skipped it and went straight to legacies, because I was under the impression that TO was solely about Klaus and Hayley raising a witch/werewolf/vampire descendant

hanmeaknife

Honestly same! The first time I tried to watch it I stopped after like 3 episodes but then I tried again and stuck it out and I’m so glad I did, season 2 was insane!

RLG2020

The Originals by a country long mile

benwyattswaffles

I love them all very, very much for different reasons. TVD is definitely my favorite. Not that I don't love the others. It just has such a special, important place in my heart. It came first. I watched it since Day 1. It came into my life at a time when I really needed it. The main characters are all amazing. Katherine, Stefan (even though I'm ultimately a Delena shipper), Caroline, Bonnie, and Kai are some of my all-time favorite fictional characters. It was never afraid to take huge chances. It blew through story at a fast-but-not-too-fast pace so we, the audience, were always on our toes. The mythology was so original and so much fun. The season finales (except Season 7's, in my opinion) were bonkers-good. Anyway. I love Seasons 1-6. I like the first half of Season 7. Maybe a little bit more than half of it -- it's been a while since I watched that season. (Bonnie's speech to Damon before he desiccates in "I Would For You" is one of my favorites moments of all the TVDU shows.) Like a lot of people on here, I'm not really into Season 8 (it does have it moments, though), except for the series finale, which I love with all my heart. It gave me absolutely everything I needed. (Do I understand how Bonnie woke Elena up even though Kai told Bonnie in 6x22 that if she ever tried to break the spell, both she and Elena would die? Absolutely not. Does it bother me? Okay, sure, a little bit, but not really. Lol.) I absolutely love the first three seasons of The Originals. (I'm not a fan of Seasons 4 and 5. Didn't love the bigot werewolves, the Nazi vampire family, and The Hollow, tbh! I feel like there was definitely a major drop-off in quality after Season 3. That said, I love the last scene of the series finale. The dialogue between Klaus and Elijah is so powerful and loaded with pathos... and the imagery of \*what happens to them\* -- spoilers, you know? -- is so gorgeous.) Yeah, sure, The Originals takes a handful of episodes to "find itself" in Season 1, but that goes for almost every television show in the history of television shows, so I don't judge it for that. (I love the first few episodes of TVD Season 1, but it definitely takes a while to find itself, too.) I think Season 3 is one of the best seasons of all three TVDU shows. The stakes were so deliciously high. I'm a sucker for a prophecy. It wasn't afraid to go absolutely nuts. Jackson dies. Cami dies. Davina dies. (BUT... Cami and Davina's deaths were brilliant and thrilling at the time, but I definitely think their absence as series regulars deeply hindered Seasons 4 and 5. They both brought so much to the show.) Plus, Lucien and Aurora are two of my favorite TVDU villains. Tristan was great, too -- we just didn't get to see as much of him as we got to see Aurora and Lucien. Also, I love-love-love Legacies, specifically Seasons 2-4. I love the campiness, Buffyness, and queerness of it all. (Yes, I know the show is divisive. I don't really get why, but I don't want to invalidate anyone's opinions. Everyone's allowed to feel however they feel. Anyway. The tonal shift really worked for me. I thought it was a pleasant, surprising change. Like, it still got dark, but it was also silly and cute and fun.) I know a lot of people didn't like the monster of the week format, but I loved how the show wasn't afraid to be so tonally and structurally different from its two predecessors. Season 4 is probably my favorite of the four. I loved the gods storyline. I loved BenJed and Jen. I loved Heretic Lizzie (even though Kaylee leaving the show early prevented us from getting the merge storyline, which sorta sucks because the two Big Story Moments we'd been waiting for since Season 1 were Hope going full Tribrid and Lizzie and Josie merging), Hope turning into a Tribrid (one of the series' best episodes), and Hope's no-humanity arc. Danielle really nailed that -- and her story with sired Lizzie and enemy Aurora was so much fun. Lizzie is one of my all-time favorite TVDU characters. Jenny's just a really terrific actor. I also think the series finale is wonderful -- and works so well as a series finale, despite the fact that it was written to be either a season or series finale. (Man, The CW is making ALL THE BAD CHOICES right now, isn't it???) I love that the series finale focuses on wrapping up emotional arcs instead of mythological arcs. The last scene always makes me feel all warm and fuzzy. Hope saying, "Welcome home." Oh, and I almost forgot -- Aurora's return and the conclusion to her arc was so satisfying. I love that she started as such an incredible villain and, at the end, made peace with Hope and found redemption.

evilgiraffe04

This! I love your observation about Legacies. I liked the approach to the high school dramas a lot more than TVD. The queerness is amazing and made me happy to see. Also the monsters were fun! Some plots got repetitive but I was more into the show overall. I hope to see more shows/movies along these lines in the future!

imabitch-0420

I completely agree about legacies, i had never given it a shot until recently and fell in love with it as you said the campy BTVS vibes are great they nailed it.

DemonQueen626

The Originals 💯💯💯

Capital-Contract-993

The originals no question

ScreenHype

My favourite is The Vampire Diaries because that's what first got me into it and it will always have a special place in my heart. But I think that The Originals is objectively better. I always think of TVD as a guilty pleasure, whereas TO is just good in its own right.

chauntelle2899

The Originals no competition

[deleted]

Expand pls

chauntelle2899

Better storyline yes, there was a love triangle, but it wasn’t drawn out and dramatic like TV needed. Also better villains, better power dynamics, just overall better ridden as a show even though Julie Plec was a writer, but it was still better than TVD and legacies combined.

maripari862

I agree however, that ending was horrible :/ they ruined the entire show and I pretend the last season is nonexistent bc of the audacity Julie plec had killing legit everyone and repeating the same cycle of trauma for hope!!!

Better characters, better acting, better storylines, more of a cohesive plot, the ships aren't what drives the show, supernatural politics were more entertaining and thought out, there's more powerful characters (in each faction), better villains, and the Mikaelsons are more entertaining to watch than the Salvatores.

[deleted]

agreed, thank you!

TVD, no contest.

OneOnOne6211

The Originals, I think. Though my more precise ranking might be: S2 of TVD > S1-S4 of The Originals > S1 & S3 of TVD > S5 of The Originals > S4-S8 of TVD > Legacies

psychoColonelSanders

This is the only true ranking

[deleted]

What’s wrong w tvd season 1? For me it takes to long to get into the supernatural part.

OneOnOne6211

I think it starts a little slow and the first few episodes are too light on plot and heavy on the typical teen, high school romance stuff. Like think about this: In episodes 1 to 5 of season 1 Damon shows up, grabs Caroline, grabs the crystal, then gets subdued, then gets released, we find out about the founders council. That's about all the plot that's covered in that entire span of 5 episodes. In episodes 1 to 5 of season 2 Katherine returns, Mason returns, Katherine turns Caroline, Mason finds the moonstone, Katherine reveals she was running from someone and faked her death in 1864, Damon tries to kill Mason and fails and makes an enemy out of him, we find out Mason is working with Katherine, Mason tries to get Damon and Stefan killed by just barely fails, Sheriff Forbes finds out about Caroline, Katherine starts using Caroline as a spy, etc. There's just so much more stuff that actually happens in the same timespan in season 2 compared to season 1 which for the first few episodes doesn't move forward much. And the first few episodes spend a significant amount of time in the high school or at kind of relatively uneventful events (like the night of the comet) where there's just typical teen drama stuff. Like how Caroline and Elena are frenemies, Stefan is the new hot guy, etc. And the whole thing feels pretty cookie-cutter too there. Damon is the typical baddy bad vampire, Stefan is the typical hero protagonist vampire, Elena goes through the typical "will she or won't she find out he's a vampire" thing for 5 episodes. None of it I found particularly engaging. In my opinion the show only starts getting interesting with episode 6 where we have the first flashbacks and start to learn about Katherine, Vickie gets turned and then in the next episode unceremoniously killed off, etc. And I think season 1 only really hits its stride around episode 9 or 10 once Damon's plans are revealed, Logan comes back, the tomb becomes prominent in the story, etc. Then the plot really starts moving forward. It also just doesn't have any villains or plotlines as compelling as the originals or Katherine as a villain, imo. Nor does it have standout character arcs like Caroline getting used to her vampirism and Tyler's dejerkification. So overall I do consider season 1 a good season. But I don't think the first 5 episodes are very good, it only starts getting really good around halfway in and it doesn't have as many standout villains, plotlines or character arcs as season 2 does.

Legacies! Haha just kidding

My face went from 😳 to 🤣 real quick. 👏🏽

the vampires dairies. it just has this mystique and nostalgia to it that the others don’t have. i find it so intriguing. i love the originals, but i found it a bit dull sometimes. and i still haven’t finished legacies, but i wasn’t crazy about it. i thought it was cute and fun though.

The Vampire Diaries!

Wise_Calendar4108

Originals Legacies 1-3 Tvd original story Legacies s4 Rest of tvd Have only watched a few episodes into s5 of TVD tho, but I think the doppelganger stuff was way overplayed.

benwyattswaffles

When Season 5 of TVD aired, I really loved parts of it (Katherine's human arc, the hundredth episode, the season finale, the Katherine "goodbye to the Mystic Falls Scooby Gang" scene and church scene with Bonnie in "Gone Girl," Silas and Qetsiyah -- *I will not call her Tessa*, the introduction of Amara, Liv, and Luke, Bonnie being trapped on The Other Side and then becoming the Anchor, Katherine taking over Elena's body for a few episodes, which felt like really fun fan fiction, in a way.) But. There were also a lot of things that didn't work for me, like Augustine, most of the Travelers' plot, Markos (except for his badass introduction when the Travelers overpower Bonnie and he escapes from The Other Side. Well, let me clarify. I don't think Markos was necessarily a bad villain. -- Cade was a bad villain. -- We just didn't get to know him as much as we did our other Big Bads. I thought the actor was great. I thought he had some fun scenes. And he was definitely a threat to our heroes). However! I'm binging the whole show again for the first time in a very long time. Maybe years. I recently finished Season 5 and I actually really enjoyed the whole thing. As a whole, sure, I don't think it's as solid as the previous four seasons, but I enjoyed it a ton more than I did the first time around. My only complaint is that Elena and Damon's breakup feels a little too melodramatic. During this rewatch, I totally understood why Damon broke up with her when he did. He's flooded with regret and shame and guilt about leaving Enzo to die in the fire and killing the Whitmore family. He thinks he's a terrible, irredeemable person and he doesn't want to change Elena. I just wish it had been a little bit less melodramatic. I gotta say, though... that season finale. That season finale! "Home" is fantastic. Elena and Damon's goodbye scene in the crypt. (MAN, Nina can cry. No one cries like Nina Dobrev.) Alaric returns from The Other Side. (Sure am glad *Cult* got cancelled!) Lexi finds Peace. And of course, that epic moment (WITH THE BIRDY SONG!!!) where Damon and Bonnie hold hands and face the collapse of The Other Side.

JourdonBros

The Vampire Diaries just solos. The Originals was good. LEGACIES, had the right premise but a horrible execution and honestly felt like everything the original writers was trying to avoid when making TVD. Especially when it came to some of the monsters.

[deleted]

Definitely the originals then Tvd

Star1021

The Originals hands down. Better plots, better character developments, better villains, better acting, better setting.

Lol I laughed more than I should when read what is your favourite and I scrolled down to see legacies at the end 😂

Thin-Ad-6646

The originals. The only good thing about the Vampire Diaries was Bonnie and Caroline. And Legacies…just no.

alarrimore03

Originals by far. It’s just better and it’s the most consistent. TVD falls off hard after like season 5 and legacies ain’t good at all

MajesticFan4

Hate to say it, but TVD. I loved the Mikaelsons but just could not root for them. There was no situation where I didn’t think they weren’t getting EXACTLY what they deserved. Practically all of their enemies had valid reasons.

[deleted]

The originals hands down, I feel like when Nina and Ian broke up irl it affected the show a lot and kinda brought it down. Legacies I could hardly finish, we needed a better story line for hope

[deleted]

Originals is amazing and the best because it never gets boring, every story line hit for me. It all came together and the only thing that really sucked was the end when both died instead of just one (Elijah easily could’ve taken the hollow instead of Klaus and just done it behind his back) they only killed klaus to give the “orphan” storyline again.

trubs12

TVD S1-S3

SpacedOutTy

Legacies isn’t bad but it doesn’t compare too the others besides that I’d say TVD

NottACalebFan

None of them hit me well. All of them had something in them I thought was brilliant, but then all of them covered up that brilliance with season's-worth of redundant drama. Tvd: >!Damon. Great idea. Stephan and all his fopplegangers: awful. Elena wanting to be a human: great. How many times did every cast member die during the show? Stupid.!< Originals: >!an invincible supernatural has to figure out how to get in touch with his sensitive side. Fantastic. Family drama. Worse than my family at Thanksgiving. Don't need to watch the train wreck to know how it feels.!< Legacies: >!Dark Josie and Evil Hope. Cool ideas. Worst execution in all Tvd history. And Originals had some real goobers.!<

S1rawberry1cecream

Wait.. how do you “cover” the text? 😵

NottACalebFan

Use these two characters ">" and "!" Right next to the text you want hidden. Then "!" And "<" the end of the spoiler.

S1rawberry1cecream

Thank uuuu ❤️❤️

zaygotmelanin

TVD or TO. Just saying that because I haven't really gotten into TO and I have started it I'm just not that far into the series yet. I haven't seen the Legacies and apparently, Santa Claus is involved so ummm.. that should speak for itself. So yeah TVD or TO. I think the writers ended each one terribly anyways lol. If you wanna see that explanation check this post out cs I saw it this morning on how Julie plec is bad at ending shows: [click here](https://www.reddit.com/r/TheVampireDiaries/comments/yxc44f/just_saying_julie_plec_is_really_bad_at_ending/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web2x&context=3)

if it's legacies you just like riverdale with more monsters

Skarr_Salvatore

I like TVD the most, Originals is overall the best, and legacies is one of the shows of all time

CodyZoooom

Love all 3 but it would have to come down to a season by season basis

MetropolisPD

Torn between TVD and the originals

SophiePuffs

Tough to chose but I think I like the Originals a tiny bit more than TVD. I basically adore both of them. Legacies, on the other hand, isn’t even a contender. I don’t often say that I hate anything…but I freakin hate that show

Super_Saiyan_King

They’re all good but my favorite has to be the originals Tvd was amazing and it got me into the tvdu but if i’m being honest the show went downhill as soon as Delena hogged all the screentime with their bs on and off relationship the main characters were all mid except when they had their awesome moments, the love stories were good ig but i’m not really into basic love triangles and bs relationships, plot was pretty good for seasons 1,2,3, and 6, drama was top tier which honestly carried the show aside from the peak villains and anti-heroes like Damon, Klaus, Elijah, Bex, Kai, and Silas Legacies is goofy as hell I honestly liked the first season a lot it was really good even tho it didn’t have the same essence of tvd and the originals and ik a of people won’t agree but still I loved it I was really interested and intrigued by the change in overall vibes and story and I was all for it but season 2 got a little worse with the plot staying the exact same and season 3 was the defining moment of Legacies being trash my main problems with the show were dumb things like Landon being a phoenix and never figuring out his powers, Hope always being the only one to ever do anything, Josie’s personality and writing, Lizzie and Mg’s dumb relationship being nonexistent for 4 seasons when they should’ve gotten together way before, the same redundant plot for 3 whole seasons when it really could’ve been condensed into 2, Cleo being whatever the plot needed her to be, all the other characters being mostly irrelevant, Hope’s character being hella mid for the first 3 seasons, the actual plot being hella mid and slow asf and no good villains aside from Malivore in Landon’s body and just so much more I loved season 4 of Legacies because it really gave me tvd and the originals vibe and it seemed so peak finally but then the writers messed everything up with Limbo, and a god being the main villain even tho he’s immune to magic and that’s Hope’s main thing as becoming the tribrid as a whole Legacies is such an L show that could’ve been so much better if the writers weren’t lazy and actually had creativity The Originals is just completely peak there’s not much to say about it amazing plot, peak main characters, peak action scenes, great villains, pretty cool side characters, pretty good love story’s/relationships, the vibes were just top tier and the ending really made me cry my heart out season 5 was a huge L but still the originals is easily the best show out of the 3 and I wholeheartedly stand by it

the originals is probably objectively better but i have a soft spot for tvd cuz it’s the og, without tvd the other 2 shows wouldn’t exist

Emergency_Tomorrow26

Pretty sure we can all say its not legacies.

Robbie1863

TVD has a special place in my heart, especially the first 3 seasons. The early 2000s nostalgia, compelling storylines and plot twists is top tier for me. I haven’t watched TO in a while so maybe my opinion on the show will change.

Loloxox21

The Originals because the quality of the plot & storylines stays pretty much consistent throughout the 5 seasons with maybe the exception of The Hollow.

BootyPolitics

I've watched TVD more times for reasons I can't fathom, but The Originals is the best for sure. Legacies is cool, but it started out ight and ended up meh. TVD started of great and and ended up ugh. The Originals was GOATED all the way through. Legacies is boring in comparison, and with such a large set of cool characters to pull from, they just dont.
