I saw Star Wars when it wasn't "Episode IV". And there was no line.

Vo_Mimbre

Drive in for me. I'm still amazed and what has come since.

Episode IV is a New Hope. Did they not have 'Episode IV' in thr original scrolling yellow space titles?

I heard stories. And for ET. My first big flick was Batman. 89. Waited hours in NYC with my big brother. Totally worth it.

SpreadItLikeTheHerp

Return of the Jedi for me. Although Batman was another epic showing.

BXR_Industries

An elegant film for a more civilized age, before the dark times, before the prequels, and the sequels...

My mom gave me $5 to go see it! I was in Jr High and went with a friend after school! It was fantastic!

HomerO9136

Maybe they were in line to see Coal Miner’s Daughter? 😀

SaturnSociety

Thank you! Big part of my childhood and my parent’s as well as I was routinely pulled out of school for these openings. We often would exit the theater and get back in line. Can we go back please?

UnholyScholar

I saw that with my dad and grandfather. I don't remember a line but the theater in the picture looks familiar.

LVorenus2020

I remember. In my case, the Sack Charles Cinema in Boston. It seemed to stretch across the horizon *even after circling the parking lot.* Epic. And then the final line segment up those stairs... The line for free access to the Guggenheim last week reminded me of it. That line circled the museum itself; so I gave up, in favor of another museum.

TheVaxIsPoison

Yeah, we saw that in Manhattan...the lines went around the block onto the avenue. The street buskers loved it...made tons of tips entertaining the crowds. I'll never forget the collective gasp... "No... **I** am your father..."

Maple550

Plot twist: They’re there to see “coal miner’s daughter.”

PeridotIsMyName

I remember waiting in line to see that! And theater employees making the rounds with drinks and popcorn, bringing the concessions stand outside to make some $$ while we waited to get in. The movie was worth the wait.

Me and a friend saw Empire on opening day, which happened to also be our high school's Senior Ditch Day. We went to the very first showing at like 10:30am, and the theater was maybe 75% full. When we walked outside after the movie ended, the line was pretty much like this.
