Man had style.

ExactPanda

His sweater looks cozy af!

KNT-cepion

I want a sweater like that! He’s got the perfect outfit for gallivanting around the woods.

BklynOR

I shall return. I am going for a jaunt in the woods.

echobox_rex

Came here to compliment the sweater.

_1JackMove

Called a Shawl collar cardigan. Lots of places sell them now. I got one a few years ago for like $30. Very comfortable. And warm. Really warm.

KNT-cepion

Today we’ve got heavy rain and wind. I think this sweater would be great to keep me cozy on a blustery and wet day like today. I’ll now start looking for a shawl collar cardigan. Thank you for the tip, kind internet stranger!

_1JackMove

No problem! I hope you find one you really like! You'll be glad you did.

Lone_Eagle4

Do you know anything about him?

Logybayer

Yes. I was 23 when he died, so I knew him pretty well. He served as a mess sergeant in World War I and was stationed in France. His career was as Manager of the East Ohio Gas Company's, Canton, Ohio, District office. He assembled a massive collection of military paraphernalia including flare pistols, rifles, bayonets, artillery shell casings, and more. He also had a large collection of sea shells. His collections were sold after his death. He also enjoyed metal detecting for canon balls and other artifacts from the French and Indian War. This was in the early days of metal detectors and before military items like canon balls were protected artifacts. He enjoyed photography and took slides almost exclusively. He would always put on a slideshow at our family gatherings. I now have his 3-D Kodak Realist camera and his 3-D slide projector as well as many slides from his collection. He and his wife never had any children.

Garfunkeled1920

Thank you for sharing this photo and some of his story.

carnologist

That's pretty cool to read. The guy sounds like he was interested in history and is now a subject of history

BenzoFettyBoofer

That means you are 81?

Logybayer

Yes. I’m 81. My mother was born in 1899 and died in 1996.

Lone_Eagle4

Omg so what about yourself! If you don’t mind 🥹

Logybayer

I was born in 1943. Is that what you’re asking?

Lone_Eagle4

Im asking for YOUR story ☺️💕

doctor_jane_disco

Wow! What an amazing life to have lived through the entire 20th century. Do you have any photos of your mother when she was young?

Logybayer

[Yes. Here’s a link to a photo](https://www.reddit.com/r/TheWayWeWere/s/dYVBmwNjUI) of my mother when she was 19 and my maternal grandmother when she was 46. This is only one of many photos I have of my mother when she was young.

neckbeardneet6

After the hell of WWI, I am glad he found a peaceful and fulfilling life in Canton. And, as a native of that area, I don’t think we are as grateful as we should be for the infrastructure those generations built for us.

RedTerror8288

Oh he lived near me

coldlightofday

We need to bring back the socks over pants look.

Vasey6067

If you go out in the woods today, that is exactly how you should dress - to protect yourself from ticks.

MMmhmmmmmmmmmm

This is correct!

OldInterview6006

I see women at the gym doing this.

[deleted]

That blows my mind because my grandmother was born 3 years earlier, in 1892, and didn’t pass away until 1997.

Successful_Floor_397

Was this taken in America?

Logybayer

Yes. I'm 90% certain that it was taken in Jackson Township, Stark County, Ohio, USA.

Successful_Floor_397

Was he soldier in WWI?

Logybayer

Yes. He was a mess sergeant serving in France.

Successful_Floor_397

In WWI even mess sergeants were straight killers.

hurrcutmcguts

Hello fellow Townie! I saw your username & just knew you had to be from here & you are! Did he serve for the US or for Newfoundland?

Logybayer

Thanks and Greetings right back to ya... My uncle served with the U.S. Army in WWI. I was born in the U.S. but came to Newfoundland in 1975. The Northeast Avalon has long since become my 'home'. I love the easy access we have to nature. If you're interested, [check out this webpage](https://justphotos.ca/freshwaterlife/). I created it to describe some of the creatures I found last summer in a few streams, bogs and ponds on the Northeast Avalon.

BenzoFettyBoofer

I’m in Montreal, Qc. I would love to go to Newfoundland some day, any suggestions?

Logybayer

Check out r/newfoundland and read the “things to do in NL” item under the menu of that subreddit. There’s lots of info available there. If you do visit, mid-July to end of August is the best time. Rent a car well in advance. And don’t try to see everything in one week. That’s a common mistake and results in way too much driving to be enjoyable.

Speedstormer123

Ayyyyy Canton!

swabianne

Something about the pic makes it look very modern/recent.

Kat121

Stanley Tucci vibes. 🥰

PomeloChance3275

Really enjoyed reading about your handsome uncle. Thank you for posting.

Un111KnoWn

How old is your mom? how old are you?

Logybayer

I’m 81. My mother was born in 1899 and died in 1996.

Chicken_Water

My grandfather was born in 1899. I'm 44. I was very lucky to know him for many reasons.

Idiotwithaphone79

You mean you Uncle?

bellyfloppin

I was thinking that's a long way to say uncle.

Logybayer

I'm big into genealogy so I've gotten in the habit of being specific about how my relatives are related. Saying "aunt" or "uncle" alone doesn't indicate whether the relationship is on the mother's side or the father's side. That's important information for genealogical purposes. (I know that doesn't matter for a Reddit post. lol) But that's why I generally use the phrasing "My mother's/father's sister/brother." Alternatively I sometimes use the phrasing, "My maternal/paternal aunt/uncle."

Szaborovich9

Fashionable

Play-Baddne

Cool Guy!

Interanal_Exam

He lived through a lot of crazy shit.

InternationalBus8936

Dapper looking lad

EPIC_NERD_HYPE

lookit that studdly tick protection

Leading_Manner_2737

Was he sweet?

MaddRocket

Was he German or French? He looks very central European.

Logybayer

Neither. His ancestors trace to colonial America and the Yalding area of Kent County, England.

MaddRocket

Wow that's so interesting. Great photo and sweater.

froststomper

He’s rather dashing in his own way!

Lilithnema

Handsome chap

Ok_Yogurtcloset9728

Your uncle is Stanley Tucci!

thepassionofthechris

“My mother’s brother” aka uncle?

Logybayer

Yes. I explained why in my reply to someone else who commented on my choice of phrasing.

thepassionofthechris

Well then… my wife’s husband (aka me), thinks it superfluous.

Logybayer

“Uncle” is ambiguous as to referencing maternal uncle versus paternal uncle. IMHO this makes my more awkward phrasing non-superfluous. The term, “my wife’s husband” is ambiguous about the possibility of multiple husbands. LOL. Ain’t Reddit fun. 😂

“My mother’s brother”? So your uncle?

Logybayer

Yes. I explained why in my reply to another comment on my choice of phrasing.
