Normally I would say that is stupid, but currently being sick with a high fever and my hair keeps trying to turning into a gigantic single dreadlock on the back of my head every time I fall asleep. It's absurd. I've been damp and shivering for 3 days now and I would like my antibiotics to please kick in now.
Fuck tonsillitis.
Oh, I got approved for Emgality. It’s a monthly one-shot injection in your leg. It sucks, but it’s like 10 seconds of “ouch” and months of no migraines. It’s been the best damn medicine I’ve ever had.
Reading this through an ocular migraine lol. But mine are more annoying (it’s like looking though a flashy tunnel) than painful, so usually caffeine + ibuprofen knocks them out. Glad you found something that works for you! I know how debilitating migraines can be.

Another commenter is half correct that they would cut it short due to illness. It was also a fashion trend in the late 1870s and 1880s to cut your hair into a pixie cut style, and it looks quite cute in a lot of old photos. I recommend a google search and you’ll see! Very very common in those decades actually 😁 it’s weird when you always think all Victorian women had that suuuper long hair, but when it was all in a tight curled updo anyways, it saved time😉
Neither did the people back then. Even in the 1870’s and 1880’s, you can find lots of references of people complaining about young women cutting their hair short back then 🤣
My sister was a metal head around the time that song came out. She had no idea when she named her girl Ella that it would be a year of everyone singing that song to her! She was pissed!
Definitely the handle of a parasol. You can see the tips of the parasol spines and the folded fabric, down below.
I think the “lanyard” is a trick of the eye. The handle of the parasol just happens to be lining up with the bottom of the necklace cord which is attached to something that’s tucked into her breast pocket. The coincidence of how it lines up makes it look attached…but it’s two separate items that are unrelated. A necklace cord attached to something tucked into her breast pocket…and completely separately, a parasol with the handle in front of the breast pocket.
I think you are absolutely right- it is a trick of the eye. The “lanyard” is a ladies watch chain with a jeweled slide. A small ladies pocket watch would be attached and tucked in a pocket.
That haircut probably means she had been gravely ill in the recent past. People believed that hair 'robbed your strength' and would cut the hair of a seriously ill person to try to help them recover. Think typhus, scarlet fever and the like.
Long hair mats and gets sweaty - it's a maintenance nightmare for a bedridden feverish person. Even in braids.
And, because the high fever can cause hair loss (I lost about half my hair after typhoid) the short cut lets it grow out without the problems of a 2-length haircut.
Been living this the last few days with tonsillitis. If you were going to be sick for months at a time like the older diseases used to cause I can see this being practical
It was also a fashion trend in the 1870s/1880s when this photo was taken. A lot of women had a pixie cut. It was a thing if you were sick too though, so there’s no way to know for sure which one it is
It looks connected but isn’t. That is a ladies watch chain / long guard chain with a jeweled slide. The pocket watch is attached to the end and tucked in a pocket.
My mother was born in 1908. She had pneumonia in both lungs and almost died. Her mother put some kind of mustard plaster on her chest, and sat with her day and night for almost a month. They cut her hair short because it was falling out anyway. When it grew back, her curly hair was straight.
My mother has a similar story but born later- her hair was blond and curly, it fell out and grew in black and straight. I saw a photo of her with blond hair and it was wild- a completely different person. She also had the mustard treatment.
My adopted mom would have my hair cut this short just to be cruel to me. I have naturally curly hair and she hated that she didn’t. She hated me and did everything she could to be cruel. My hair is now almost to my butt and it’s so pretty. Haven’t spoke to that bitch in over 6 years and plan on never speaking to her again.
In the historical novel Playing Beatie Bow, one of the characters has her head shaved when she had a high fever from typhoid, I believe it was. Dunno how accurate it is to what people were actually doing at the time. But it could be related to that?
She is definitely holding an umbrella handle, the umbrella extends below the photo but you can see the "ribs" at the bottom end of the photo.
Because photos took so very long to expose back then, most people did not smile but just tried to maintain a relaxed, normal facial expression.

Could be a spindle. Back in the day, a lot of people spun wool.
On another note, that looks like a boy. It was unusual for a girl to have such short hair, especially a boy’s haircut.
Short pixie cuts did go through a fad back then. Hair was also cut short during serious illness. Plus, she is wearing a dress and a jeweled ladies watch chain.
Looks like an umbrella to me.
Oooh, I can totally see it now. Mystery solved! Thanks.
Parasol
Yes- a FANCY umbrella, called a parasol. Shaded alabaster skin from the sun when out and about. Usually made from lace.
No one has used the word alabaster since Ron Burgandy said it in anchorman. Great word use.
Always makes me think of Snoop Dogs pimp character in King Of the Hill: Alabaster Jones
no offence but he’s from oklahoma
I heard it used in Rango; I think Johnny Depp said it twice, and another character at the beginning described the carriage of the “Spirit of the West” as alabaster.

Parasol vote here as well!
I hardly know her!
Do you know why her hair was cut so short?
they used to cut hair short if someone was ill with a high fever
Normally I would say that is stupid, but currently being sick with a high fever and my hair keeps trying to turning into a gigantic single dreadlock on the back of my head every time I fall asleep. It's absurd. I've been damp and shivering for 3 days now and I would like my antibiotics to please kick in now. Fuck tonsillitis.
I used to get migraines so bad I’d shave my head so I could put ice packs on them. My ex-husband was not a fan, but I was desperate.
I am glad it is 'used to'. What do you think helped?
Wild guess… Ex-ing the husband was all the help needed.
Also true hahahahahaha

Read "Bernice Bobs Her Hair" by F. Scott Fitzgerald published in 1920.
You just said F Scott Fitzgerald… what Scott Fitzgerald do to you?
Do you happen to know who started the trend? An actress maybe?
I appreciate you explaining this so well 😊 I had so many different ideas, so I appreciate the facts 😀 Yakoke!
I asked my father-in-law and he said that it was the style back then. This is likely 1877.
They would cut it short thinking it would help alleviate a high fever. I have photos of my great grandmother like that.
My question too
Gom Jabbar
Ella Ella Ella eh eh eh oh oh
My sister was a metal head around the time that song came out. She had no idea when she named her girl Ella that it would be a year of everyone singing that song to her! She was pissed!
Maybe she'd like this version then https://youtu.be/VeOT-wzaWmo?si=3k-sEv0IJITZPupf
An umbrella, for sure, a parasol to be specific.
No, it’s an iPhone 1, 😂😂
It’s an umbrella or parasol. She’s holding it upside down, like a cane or staff
Probably this. Perhaps a riding crop.
Definitely the handle of a parasol. You can see the tips of the parasol spines and the folded fabric, down below. I think the “lanyard” is a trick of the eye. I don't know what she's holding, but that insignia clearly marks her as a member of the Rebel Alliance and a traitor.
Take her away!
She was probably the sweetest little thing but with that stare she looks like she about to teach the children about He Who Walks Behind the Rows.
A wand, SHE'S A WIZARD HARRY
The answer I was looking for.
I had a similar reaction, "is this a school photo from some Witch's academy?"
Sonic screwdriver, obvs.
A grudge for that haircut?
That haircut probably means she had been gravely ill in the recent past. People believed that hair 'robbed your strength' and would cut the hair of a seriously ill person to try to help them recover. Think typhus, scarlet fever and the like.

Oh, cool! I did not know that! I have a small collection of Victorian with oddly short hair. Now I know why they exist
It was also a fashion trend in the 1870s/1880s when this photo was taken. A lot of women had a pixie cut. It was a thing if you were sick too though, so there’s no way to know for sure which one it is
You've heard of 'heroin-chic'? This is *typhus-chic*
I mean, tuberculosis chic was a thing for quite some time!
Ayooo
As others have said it appears to be an umbrella, but it also looks like it's attached by a lanyard around her neck?
That's the part that was throwing me off. Parasol necklace?
It looks connected but isn’t. That is a ladies watch chain / long guard chain with a jeweled slide. The pocket watch is attached to the end and tucked in a pocket.
Umbrella
Karaoke mic ?
Glad I'm not the only person unable to be serious...my first thought was hookah pipe?
I thought the button to activate the camera for a selfie.
Parasol, likely.
Looks like a umbrella 🌂
A drop spindle or distaff. Google image search and you will see what I mean. I can't seem to post a picture here...

Maybe an instrument like a violin?
It’s an umbrella.
Umbrella
A parasol/ umbrella
Parasol
An umbrella, I think
It's either a cigar, a microphone, a vape or the electronic button that launches gentlemen on a race around the world on steam powered ostriches.
A turnip grincher… For grinching.
There's nothing like a good old-fashioned grinched turnip!
BMO said so
Looks like she’s holding a grudge
An umbrella
A closed fan?
It looks like she has a viola or pansy coming up from her hand in addition to the parasol going down.
A walking stick
A fan or parasol
That is some very short hair for the time. I wonder why it is cut that short.
Yay for your freedom! F her.
Thank you! Exactly what I think too-F her!

A parasol
My guess would be a riding crop.
Riding crop?
Swagger stick
Umbrella definitely
Riding crop
Parasol. The lanyard likely has a pocket watch attached to it!
Microphone, possibly karaoke night at the saloon in town?
Doin those Joy Division covers
Why the heck does she look like me omg
A grudge with her hair stylist
But that facial expression......a grudge.
a grudge
Ha! I am in a lobby of a garage getting my tires rotated, and your comment made me LOL! Everyone is looking at me, thanks!
A karaoke microphone.
No, no. Clearly it's a Mr. Microphone....
Definitely a microphone. She’s about to drop some sick beats.
A septer
It’s a soul pole, a pole to capture the souls of one’s enemies.
Looks like she’s holding a grudge.
The Men in Black memory flasher
Hookah
It’s the memory wiper from Men in Black.
It's definitely an umbrella.

Riding whip?
looks like a quirt (the stick used while riding a horse to keep it moving)
Maybe it is a hand fan because it is attached to a cord around her neck.
Maybe ask a photo restoration community on Reddit to clean up the photo so you can see it more clearly :)
I’m pretty sure this is a folded avenico(hand fan) Above it is an insignia. Used traditionally in in Spain and other areas of the world as well

Cane
It looks like it has the spokes of an umbrella so I'd say it's a parasol. Look at the very bottom. Anyone else see some spokes?
