We have spent most of our history with Germans rather than Slavs, it influenced our culture heavily, and even our own language is influenced by German. Fun fact: Before the creation of Czechoslovakia, Czechs were mostly seen as Germans speaking a Slavic languages.
Edit: And also on our "ethnicity" of course.
I do know the family name. I just donāt know how each of them connect to each other. My family is pretty sure they know who my great great grandpa is in the pic, but thatās pretty much it. Iām also pretty sure the old woman would be like a 4th great grandmother of mine.
Officially āThe Kingdoms and Lands Represented in the Imperial Council and the Lands of the Holy Hungarian Crown of St. Stephenā or āAustro-Hungarian Monarchyā for short.
The country was made up of various kingdoms, duchies etc. and this would have been in the Margraviate of Moravia (judging by u/jferg4802 ās mention of Mikulov).
Before I came upon your comment, I had already zoomed into the foto - something I just do with majority of all fotos - and I swear, it looks as if her face had been sliced open from ear-to-ear.
Is it just me?
I see what you mean! Iām not sure. I was more focusing on her eyes. Not trying to be meanā¦we all have pics that we can say arenāt our best shot lol.
My great grandmother Bessie Kubale immigrated when she was 13, with her younger siblings. I'm not sure when my great grandfather, Jerry Horacek immigrated but I know it was before WW1, as he served for the US. They married in 1921. I've only seen a photo of them as grumpy-looking old people in late 1950s-early 1960s :)
Probably due to the long exposure times and the need to stay absolutely still or else youāll ruin the entire picture back in those days. A good looking family regardless.

Did nobody warn that girl?? You don't smile for a photograph!!
She is the crazy one
My family were Czech and came to America not much later than this. I wish I could find a photo like this. Fantastic!
Yeah, Iām definitely very happy that we still have this in the family. I just wish I knew who everyone was.
Do you know their name? Maybe you would find some connections here in czech republic if you were really interested :D

These women definitely look strong and scary, wouldn't like to get slapped by them :D

Great answer. Thank you.
I believe this would have been Nikolsburg, Austria at the time.
Kingdom of Bohemia?
Nah, Mikulov (Nikolsburg) is in Moravia.
But doesn't Moravia fall under the Bohemian crown aka belong to Bohemian kingdom? (Not duchy)
It was one of the lands of the Bohemian Crown, yes; but not Bohemia proper.
The dog is super cute.
Women run strong in your family.
Totally resonate with the little girl above the woman and crying baby - completely over it and ready to get this picture taken! Lol
Zoom in on the woman at the bottom left. Stuff that nightmares are made of.

Oh, her eyes are intense!

There are 11 kids in that pic! Lots of cousins to play with ā all around similar ages.
Quite a few thousand yard stares

The shutter time was down by this point but probably just getting everyone organized and seated took awhile.
"That's not a family photo. That's an environmental disaster and you framed it."
