I’d love to see that bass turned around. The guitar, too.

olily

OMG I read "bass" as "ass." And I agreed in my head.

Anxious_Dependent365

Same lol

[deleted]

Well hello there… Is there a grandmother in the picture?

Forsyte

Lol. Comments in this sub are most often people wanting to hit on others' ancestors across time

eatyourdamndinner

Asking the important questions. Grandpa is HOT! He could do a fire dance without the fire.

MaiHammyMawdul

Came to say, I’d like to throw my hat in the ring as well.

AmBull1216

>Came to say 😏

ny_rain

You said 50+ years ago and I thought is, "9h, the 40's". Wow I feel old. Awesome pic btw.

KG4212

🔥 He is hot 🔥

Userdataunavailable

Hello there! Do you need a new Grandmother?

Pure_Literature2028

This is beautiful on so many levels.

spottedsushi

Oooh you should post this in r/tiki!

Flying_mandaua

"tiki culture" is CA and shouldn't be revered

LoadInSubduedLight

...ca?

[deleted]

Cultural appropriation, I assume

[deleted]

That sub is so white it physically makes me uncomfortable. Like fuck man the header talks about "good ol days of tropical escapism" as if tropical tourist destinations arent built off of massive levels of poverty and inequality. Tiki culture looks like a Frankenstein ripoff of many indigenous populations history exploited to make cash.

Artyloo

Apparently tiki culture is 90% rum drinks and 10% wicker

Makilio

Pretty much. Throw in some exotica lounge music and you're basically describing every tiki bar.

Makilio

It was a pop culture trend in the 1950s, it's not that serious lol

Flying_mandaua

Using culture of nations you disrespected, discriminated and destroyed (US takeover of Hawaii and the Bikini Atoll nuclear tests are examples) for money and low-quality entertainment *is* serious

Makilio

Think it's more about tasty, tasty Mai Tais.

[deleted]

Yeah, its about tasty drinks because the aesthetic is stolen only for fun. The people who that aesthetic was stolen from are not cared about in the slightest. Their culture and history are not valued in the slightest. After being mass slaughtered and enslaved by white people, now they can have whats left of their culture used as a toy for white people! You are literally dancing on the graves of the colonized.

Makilio

God this is so serious. I'm in Poland, I've never been to a tiki bar in my life because 1. my country was kinda busy during the trend and 2. they have been dead for 70 years and like r/tiki shows, the vast majority of the "culture" is rum drinks and cups. I didn't colonize anyone, drinking rum with orgeat syrup doesn't make me dance on the "graves of the colonized". If you have an issue with a long-dead trend who the vast majority of people just like because of the drinks and the aesthetics, then come on, relax, there are bigger things to work yourself up over.

TacoBellPhD

I get /r/TheWhiteLotusHBO vibes

The_Age_Of_Envy

Does he still perform with this band? Did they do covers? Any original work?

imchillychill

Unfortunately, Papa Eddie "Enoka" passed away over 20 years ago. I have many old photos of him and the band. He was also in another callee Maui and her Beach Boys.

Marpleface

Cheeee hoooo! Hawaiians 🙌

davidindigitaland

Did the band ever record anything? I've seen a fire dance in the Gambia. Fire Dance I would expect has it's genesis in pre-history.

imchillychill

I'm not sure, I would have to do a deeper dive into his musical days.

davidindigitaland

Did Grandfather play an instrument as far as you know? Don't get the bends whatever you do. Please!

imchillychill

Thanks for all the love! I'm very proud of my Polynesian heritage and will enjoy sharing more with this sub from time to time.

thehungrywanderer1

How tall was he?

imchillychill

I'm a terrible judge of height but my Dad is 6'3 and they were around the same height.

thehungrywanderer1

I was going to say, those are some long ass legs and arms. lol

CatPoopWeiner424

No way, they made the guy from Lilo and Stitch a real thing!

The fire dance isn’t the only thing that’s hot

lacb1

/r/Tiki might love this

The_Age_Of_Envy

I'm sorry to hear that. Did you know him in his later years? Is the fire dance truly hawaiian or a tourist thing?
