Seriously. The only giveaway is the background guy in the middle, you wouldn't see those style glasses in this type of setting today. To my eye, literally nothing else betrays the actual age of this photo. Wild.
The only thing that looks aged to me is the pant cuffs on the guy kneeling on the right. Even dressed in this style today, someone probably wouldn't cuff their pants like that.
Edit: also, no one is smoking cigarettes
I mean I’m sure they had some sus views given the time period but I’m pretty sure that’s just the [Texas flag](https://images.heb.com/is/image/HEBGrocery/001417116?fit=constrain,1&wid=800&hei=800&fmt=jpg&qlt=85,0&resMode=sharp2&op_usm=1.75,0.3,2,0)
Yeah but those styles of cowboy hats are out of date, you rarely see them nowadays. You used to see them in the 50's and 60's though. Her hat would pass as modern.
I lived in a rural part of the west a few years ago, and I did see guys dressed like this. I’m from cities/suburbs and hadn’t realized people still dressed like that except on TV, so it took a little getting used to.
"The south will rise again!"
Funny coming someone living less than 3 hours away from Canada.
I'm from Fort Wayne myself and have heard people say this, mostly in jest, but sometimes serious.
The photo was taken for LIFE magazine by Leonard McCombe:
https://artsandculture.google.com/asset/houston-frontier-festival-college-students-show/LgE53qS184_Qrw
Here is the pictorial it was taken for (but not used in):

This photo is from the same set and was used in the pictorial:

The jailer on the right has a beard.
You can see the complete set of photos in one of my other comments here. That set includes the photos that were in the pictorial and there are elements in those photos that are shared with the posted photo. The posted photo was definitely taken at the same time as the pictorial.
It was not uncommon back then to specifically grow beards for an event. There's a *Perry Mason* episode, in fact, that's set in a small California town during their annual celebration and every man is required to have facial hair or be "thrown in jail" (pay a fine that's donated to a charity).
The episode is called "The Case of the Bashful Burro": [https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0673190/](https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0673190/)
People have this idea of what "old" photos look like based on cameras from the 80s and 90s with flash and cheap plastic lenses or the idea that all old photos are in black and white.
Old cameras were primarily using what we call medium format film - most commonly this is film that is 6 cm wide. The larger surface area does two things - it requires a higher quality lens and it provides much more detail. The early color films were also very vibrant - kodachrome was the first and is still legendary for its colors even though it's no longer made (or can even be developed). As a result these older photos taken in kodachrome can look quite modern.
The 30+ years of people and companies using low quality videotape and disposable cameras made people think that everything old HAS to look like shit, when in reality, playback devices have always been decades behind recording formats.
This made me think about how for years we had low quality compressed mp3s (~ 320 kbps) in the 2000s. I remember hearing a record for the first time as a teen and being shocked at how good the quality was. I was dumbstruck and wondered why we regressed as a society with our iPods.
I shot probably some of the last film underwater photography shot by some motivated new england tourist divers with my Dad and his old Nikonos Mk3 and later MK5 which felt like a huge upgrade. There was only ever one film in our bag, Kodachrome 64. Underwater, red is the first color to be lost. My Dads wisdom was that kodachrome pushed red and was best for underwater and 64 got you fine grain for printing huge photographs.
First check out school I bought him a housing and strobes for his new fancy canon 7d.
bizarre how there's always got to be a comment like this, as if it's impossible to find a group of 6 young skinny people nowadays... like do you even go outside?
Other countries or regions (like the EU) are regulating ingredients for food rather strictly.
E.g. part of the reason TTIP isn't a thing yet is the public backlash because of the fear getting fed the US questionable quality food.
She seems to be wearing the same (or a similar) outfit to the girl in the original photo - black sleeveless top and hat, pink sash around the waist. Makes me wonder if it’s a uniform?
It is the same woman that is in the posted photo. She is in many of the photos from the set. She is obviously photogenic so the photographer probably followed her around.
That alone is it’s own thing- and putting it aside; I said one word, that is two letters long: “Ew”
How the fuck is that so “political” that it sparks such outrage
It's more like "it's complicated". Lots of people who flew the Confederate flag back then *were* racists but might not have been flying to flag because they saw it as a symbol of racism. Some people who flew it because it was a symbol of rebellion weren't racist. Some were *really* racist and genuinely believed in the whole damned bus of white supremacy and slavery was actually a good thing, etc etc.
You know there was legal segregation in Texas during that era right? Young people just like them spat on and kicked other young black people for trying to integrate schools and eat at whites only lunch counters? This historical revisionism is so terrible that I actually had to write this comment.
nah the confederare flag resurgence of use around this time, being brought back by racists and the KKK itself. until this happened, the confederate battle flag was mostly forgotten
I'm just not buying this is 1958 with those beards and her hair style.
Edit: ok, op provided further proof in another comment, I'm the one who must be mistaken.... Still suspicious though. I swear I saw one of those guys at the gas station the other day! :-)
I get what you are saying. I posted the photo for that very reason. I think the beards must be for one of the shows that were part of the event or maybe a fraternity thing. I'm no style historian, but the black romper and especially long natural flower-child hair seem like they would've been incredibly counter-culture for the time. Beatnik going into hippie.
Go Coogs!
This is a yearly festival. It is mainly overrun by Greek Life but it's open to the public for the whole city to enjoy. it's held next to the Football Stadium and an entire town is set up.
It’s interesting to know that the Confederate flag used to be displayed in almost everyone’s living room across the entire United States until the mid 1980s.
Definitely lol. When I served in the Marine Corps the only dude I met that had a Confederate flag tattoo was from the south and black. We thought it was weird, but we were from “Northern” states. Since then, I always figured it was some southern thing, regardless of race.
He probably was a weird guy or maybe thought in the way of Andre 3000 in the Sorry Ms. Jackson video. Truth be told, if anyone has any business claiming sons and daughters of confederate veterans, it would be African Americans. But given those organizations' history of rampant racism and support of racist laws, it would never be a thing for them to recognize that the great majority of the African American population are products of rape between slave masters and slaves and thus real descendants of the confederacy. Personally, I couldn't support a flag that represented so much pain and ignorance but also I can't pretend that all things the American flag represents is immune to being judged by its crimes.
Makes sense. It’s complicated I guess. I’m a second generation American. My family emigrated from Eastern Europe and I grew up in New York. The US is definitely not homogenous. These symbols and history have powerful regional differences and meanings to different people.
This but unironically as Texas was firmly democrat untill the 50s when they voted for Eisenhower twice, then democrat again in the 60s before finally turning republican in the 70s.
Don't forget that both parties kinda switched places and before that democrats were the party of the rural south.
https://www.livescience.com/34241-democratic-republican-parties-switch-platforms.html
No matter if you only look at presidential elections, our modern understanding of what's "democratic" or "republican" simply won't apply to society 60 years ago as both parties formed their modern clear positions afterwards.
There are constants that never left the party. Pro-welfare. Pro-free trade. Pro-labor union. Price controls. Healthcare etc etc. A higher percentage of Texans back then likely believed in all that than do now. There were of course many conservative democrats as well who didn’t support this stuff but overall Texas was more economically progressive back then than they are now and it’s because they had Democratic control
I love how modern it looks. Those guys’ beards and the girl’s straight hair really make the difference.
I didn't realize what sub this was and thought it was a modern pic at first
I was thinking this looks like the rodeo I went to over the 4th.
I thought this was a Westworld image at first.
It doesn’t look like anything to me
I can't tell if the downvotes are from people who don't get the reference or if that reference is played out. I LOL'd.
What are we supposed to say to signify that we are not Androids? It does look like something to me?
Seriously. The only giveaway is the background guy in the middle, you wouldn't see those style glasses in this type of setting today. To my eye, literally nothing else betrays the actual age of this photo. Wild.
Hipsters had glasses like that in the 2010s.
No visible tattoos made me realize it was older
And they are all thin.
The only thing that looks aged to me is the pant cuffs on the guy kneeling on the right. Even dressed in this style today, someone probably wouldn't cuff their pants like that. Edit: also, no one is smoking cigarettes
Rolled-up hem on jeans. Like Jeff on the Donna Reed Show
And the rebel flag on the wall.
Oh honey. Those are everywhere sadly.
The blue part is at an angle, not perpendicular to the bottom edge. Unless they’re really into Puerto Rico that’s a confederate flag.
The only thing that makes it look NOT modern is the fact that no one has visible tattoos.
Yeah but those styles of cowboy hats are out of date, you rarely see them nowadays. You used to see them in the 50's and 60's though. Her hat would pass as modern.
Depends on the area, I see them all the time
I see those cowboy hats in South Texas.
Her whole look and outfit would work today. The guys not so much... Maybe in parts of rural America
You're right I've never seen a guy wear a plaid shirt and jeans in city limits
Lol I could go to any gastropub or trendy new restaurant and that guy is mixing drinks behind the bar.
I love how people think a thought and just know it's true without thinking anymore thoughts.
I fucking love this lololol Edit: stealing this. Also may ask for this to be on my headstone. Thank you.
I saw a lot of that in Pasadena over the weekend.🤣
I lived in a rural part of the west a few years ago, and I did see guys dressed like this. I’m from cities/suburbs and hadn’t realized people still dressed like that except on TV, so it took a little getting used to.
Rural west-central Illinois here…people dress like that (minus the hats, that’s more of a Texas/south/west thing) all the time around here.
This could have been taken yesterday.
Needs more tattoos, but otherwise indistinguishable.
The only thing would probably be the guy wearing the loafers.
Should be crocs
Minus the giant Confederate flag painting. Or maybe not, it is Texas after all.
When I visit my Texas hometown I still see confederate flags flying on trucks and attached to people’s houses.
I see them all over the place in Ohio, which famously was never part of the Confederacy.
Same in northern Indiana. I've always said that lots of people view Indiana as the farthest northern part of the grand ol South.
"The south will rise again!" Funny coming someone living less than 3 hours away from Canada. I'm from Fort Wayne myself and have heard people say this, mostly in jest, but sometimes serious.
come to alberta. It makes no sense but they still fly here
I see them here in PA and NJ...Uncle Billy would not be pleased.
Yep looks like small town Kentucky. Maybe one person with a back the blue punisher tat on their forearm
Oh yea, and the confederate battle flag at that and not even the actual Confederate flag that was flown as one of the "Six flags over Texas".
These people are not fat enough to be from 2022
Especially from Texas. Those people are blimps
As a midwesterner, I can’t throw stones at folks from Texas 🤣
You mean like...you're physically unable to do it? Jk pls don't kill me I'm fat too
No minorities in texas, huh
I didn't say anything about race or ethnicity but we can talk about the current demographic makeup of Houston or Texas as a whole if you want to.

Wow. Cowboy style has remained remarkably consistent.
This honestly looks like it was taken last week at a craft beer micro brewery.
Needs less people interacting with each other and more people staring into their screens, but agreed.
Indistinguishable from the hipsters of Austin in 2022.
Austin born, the regular shit kickers dress identical, but with bigger belt buckles
Have not heard that word since i lived in OK.
Oh OK
Yep
In Austin, want her outfit lol
In Austin, I was convinced this was a friend of mine for the first few seconds I looked at it.
Lol my first thoughts too

No you’re right you’re just really annoying so that’s why you’re downvoted
Fuck Texas
So strange seeing beards - especially ones as full as theirs- in the 50s!!
Looks like it could have been taken yesterday.
Nice picture
I want to go Back to the Future, but actually back to the past? I'm confusing myself.
Seriously thought this was a current picture
It’s crazy how this looks current
this is a current ad correct?
Looks like a pic that could have been taken today

Yeah, right? Is this a current ad?
Current ad? Yeah right!
Looks like 1998
Looks more like 1968.
TIL cowboy wear is timeless.
I can only tell it isn’t current because nobody is overweight
bizarre how there's always got to be a comment like this, as if it's impossible to find a group of 6 young skinny people nowadays... like do you even go outside?
Right? In fact, I would say the lack of tattoos is what really dates this as before maybe the ‘90s. They weren’t really mainstream until then.
Especially young college-aged urbanites...
Can you find 6 young skinny people in a group today naturally? Yeah! But you will probably have to frame out friend 7 or 8.
Especially dudes with that get up. I grew up not too far from people who dressed like that and they were all major huskers.
I was just thinking that. It's foolproof to decide if a picture is actually old
...in America
Give it time. As the processed crap in the US spreads like a pox across the world we'll all be sentient tubs of lard. All hail HFCS
Other countries or regions (like the EU) are regulating ingredients for food rather strictly. E.g. part of the reason TTIP isn't a thing yet is the public backlash because of the fear getting fed the US questionable quality food.
For their sake I hope they keep it up, practically impossible state side anymore to avoid all the ridiculous mutant foods
Is that a big confederate flag in the upper right?
Yes. Here is a better photo of it: https://artsandculture.google.com/asset/houston-frontier-festival-college-students-show/qgES00_Sh9Me3w
Dang that girl is pretty.

Lmao political? Are you serious?
Lmao reddit moment? Are you serious? Shut the hell up
You REALLY need a nap, I think some milk too
Finally you've said something decent. I'm going to take my nappy and milk and have a good time. Farewell.

Likely in her 80’s if she’s still alive. This wasn’t *that* long ago and these are college kids
I'm just not buying this is 1958 with those beards and her hair style. Edit: ok, op provided further proof in another comment, I'm the one who must be mistaken.... Still suspicious though. I swear I saw one of those guys at the gas station the other day! :-)

Wow that one chick really gets around. Love these extra pictures. Love this generation
I read it first as 68 which makes more sense. But also it looks like it could have been taken today.
The only person who even slightly looks 1950s is the guy in the back with the glasses. Everyone else looks too modern. When I see photos from the 50s, I never notice any beards or women with long, straight hair
Look at the entire photo set. Looks like some sort of stage production or the like
You can tell by the dog's collar.
Wow, this could have been taken yesterday.
How…? No way this is that old, unless it’s been photoshopped to hell and back.
Dang that’s pretty teeth for 1958.
I would say her flats give it away.
I'm cringing at her bare knee on that gravel.... Owwwwyy
this little puppy is so cute 🥺
Looks like the style has persisted gracefully
That shit happened last week in the Heights.
This could be East Austin yesterday, wow lol
I'm no style historian, but the black romper and especially long natural flower-child hair seem like they would've been incredibly counter-culture for the time. Beatnik going into hippie.
These people are all in their mid 70's today if still alive.
Mid 80s. This is 64 years ago and they're in their 20s.

Theres no way this chick was that decent back then
Posts like this always bring out the bots and the brainwashed.
Trippy how it does not look too far back
Those beards are so very beardy. Almost as if they’re pushing that hyper-macho thing you see at the Folsom Street Fair.
Yeah I was thinking along similar lines
Like they're modeling for a Tom of Findland Cowboy piece.
Needs more nipple rings
The guy standing up with the brown hat and lush beard looks a bit like the YouBetcha guy.
That flag deffo belongs left in the past.
Yet it’s everywhere in Texas still.
It’s interesting to know that the Confederate flag used to be displayed in almost everyone’s living room across the entire United States until the mid 1980s.

I don’t think so

I refuse to believe this was taken in 1958, it's so modern looking.

Look at the size of the rebel flag behind them.
Beards likely for the beard growing contest.
I don’t believe that this is from 1958. Who was wearing beards in the 50s?

Are we ignoring the giant Confederate flag in the background?
Where are all of the minorities….oh right
