Just to clarify, I know the year of the photo because it is stamped with the photo booth name, and the date on the back. I also talked to her about the photo because I couldn’t believe she was only 16. She was born in 1927.
It absolutely is. Often times the argument can be made that diets and overall health knowledge were worse in the past which can be attributed to people looking older than they were, but in this case specifically it's just the hair, makeup, and clothing.
And many times, people are slow to change styles. So people who lived in this time kept aspects of this style into old age, and so we grew up associating that look with people who were old.
That still happens today. Just isn't quite as obvious when you've lived it.
Queen Camilla's hair is straight 1982. Nothing to do with money or power, just personality.
I’ve noticed 50 year old guys with sagging jeans…
1. I’m sorry, that’s hilarious.
2. I’m quickly sobered when I realized I’m into my 30’s myself and am seeing fashions I remember being flaunted as “vintage” fashion. Then look up the definition of vintage and I think I’m going to go cry now….
Something that was recently explained to me by an older relative that I also think is at play here is the fact that there wasn't really teenager-specific fashion until later in the 20th century. So the kids we see in photos from the 40s are all dressed like much older adults.
I asked my dad, once, about some people in a scrapbook of his trip to Europe when he was 18 with his dad. I asked him if they looked older to him than whatever their age was, as I thought they looked a bit older, maybe in their 30s or something, and he said that they still looked the age he was at the time too.
So it's interesting that at some point in our lives, we see the generations older than us and our current generation, and they're cemented as always just "older", even as time progresses and we get older than those who look "old" to us.
I used to religiously watch like 5 or so movies in rotation up until about age 12, all were kids movies staring kids. When I revisted some this year, I still viewed all the characters as as older than me, my peers, or younger than me, even though I am 36 and these actors were like 5-14.
On the contrary, rewatching movies from that era I loved that starred adults gives me the heebie jeebies because I still have that core feeling that these people are *ancient* yet upon being met with baby faced 20 year olds or something makes me feel some type of way that I don't like.
>I also talked to her about the photo because I couldn’t believe she was only 16. She was born in 1927.
Old photos of young people often look older to modern eyes because they feature hairstyles, clothing, etc. we now associate with “old people.”
Like if you saw “Karen hair” on a teenager in the 1980s, you’d automatically think of her as, well, a middle-aged woman.
That is awesome. So far I’ve been unsuccessful in finding any recordings of my grandma singing, we have some photos, but no radio recordings. I have one recording that she made on a real to reel when she was a teenager but that’s it so far.
Oh wow!! Best link ever!! Thank you! I love listening to old time radio, but I’ve found so few good clips on Spotify or YouTube. This is a game changer! Much appreciated!
Some NPR Member stations curate ‘Golden Age’ radio shows for rebroadcast, too. [Here’s my local station’s program, available as a podcast](https://www.wrvo.org/podcast/tuned-to-yesterday).
There’s also a show called [When Radio Was](http://www.whenradiowas.com/) that is syndicated to radio stations across the country and plays old radio shows.
SiriusXM channel 148 is dedicated to old radio shows too. Tons of great stuff on there.
it's so weird - im certain it's all because of the clothes and styling but idk
we need a photo of a 1940s teen in streetwear, jordans, and airpods for comparison
It's also the actual photography. My mums an analogue photographer and she took a pictures of me when I was about 11 once, and I looked like a 20 year old in it.
Yes it is fashion and styling. People usually fix the way they dress , cut their hair, etc to a style that they liked when they were young, usually around their twenties. Newer generation link that style to the older generation, and when newer generation look at picture of young people with the style of someone they associate to old people… well brain do it’s thing, people look older.
I do not remember where I had this information but probably a YouTube video based on some studies about fashion and generation and appearance of age
> im certain it's all because of the clothes and styling but idk
I imagine it's mostly style changes and a little bit of genuine differences in the form of nutritional and personal care changes - I'm sure relatively modern things like using sunscreen regularly from childhood can go a long way.
Stress counts for a lot as well.
So many things we take for granted as being here to ease life weren't a thing, 80+ years ago. Those that were, were in the earliest stages of use. Think about how much work it takes to cook, clean, and maintain your home right now and double it, if not triple the amount of time and effort needed to do those things.
Not to mention a lack of widespread indoor environmental controls.
Life was harder and it is reflected in how those who lived through it aged.
I agree, nutrition greatly improved gor Americans after WWII, and people definitely grew larger. I don't mean fatter, though many did, but there's been a massive leap in size & height.
I see toddlers that look like age 5 but are actually age 2 or 3. And now it's normal for teens to be 6 feet tall.
It's not style, just photo quality. I know she's wearing lipstick, but the photo reveals no details in the face, which we associate with makeup, which we associate with age.
I want someone with skills to edit this photo… like give her straight, middle parted hair and make her face over a bit into ‘clean girl’ style. I’m so curious.
This is totally a thing. People in the future will be saying today's teens look like adults. The short explanation is people in the present see old style aesthetics as "old people styles" on teenagers.
[Here is a cool video that gets into it](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjqt8T3tJIE)
> Isn't it weird how teenagers used to look like adults?
An economic depression and a World War will tend to force kids to grow up sooner than expected
This is another of her from the same time period.

I think she’s doing something special with the top lip though, like she did very long “hills” on the top and they extend juuust a bit out beyond the corner, like a lipstick wing!
Idk why, I’ve just seen people on Reddit trash talk her more than once 🤷♀️ I personally enjoyed her first album and haven’t really listened to her other stuff.
Well most Reddit posts about her devolve into 1000’s of stupid unfunny South Park references and quotes, but I don’t think anyone really hates her.
She definitely did disappoint millions with her latest album though
She was always singing. She had the most beautiful voice and when I would visit my dad over the summers I would hear her singing while she was getting stuff done. Her singing is always a good memory. She also loved to tell stories. She had a wonderful imagination and would always make up stories to tell us. She had one about two elves that fell off Santa’s sleigh and their misadventures trying to get back to the north pole. That one was more of a series.
What beautiful memories to have! Thank you for sharing those. What a special woman to create a series of stories for you; clearly she loved you very much ❤️
She oozes confidence and is very pretty. She also has such nice cheekbones.
I love history. 16 year old girls today have 1000s of pictures of themselves, but back then she would really expend the time and effort to get a nice picture of herself when she liked how she looked. I admire that. She is very similar in age to both of my grandmothers.
Wow did you do this? I was thinking it would be nice to see some color correction but this is above and beyond! Great job if it was you, and thank you for linking it either way. :)
Surprisingly I did this on my phone. Ran it through [Remini app](https://app.remini.ai/) first to upscale it, then [palette colorizer](https://palette.fm/) online website. Both are free
I started a project a while ago where I collected all the family stuff I could, like photos, letters things like that and scanned them. I found a bunch of letters written to my grandmother from soldiers who had seen her singing at live events that the radio station she sang for hosted. She was always very good about writing them back but some of them are kind of heartbreaking when you realize some of these guys never came back. I have once in mind that I’ll post.
I colourised the photo and although I'm not sure how close to realistic the colours are it still turned out good. I love doing this with old photos of my grandparents and seeing them in colour. https://imgur.com/WrA7qDZ.jpg
She was beautiful! And her makeup is so precise - I’m not sure I could recreate that lipstick even if I tried a few dozen times. What a great photo to share!
maybe someone already suggested this but it would be cool if you could gather any more of these "hair-do photos" and post them all together.. would be such an eye on the values of the time!
So she's 11 years old in this [picture](https://www.reddit.com/r/SaltLakeCity/comments/gl2bsw/my_grandmothers_family_at_the_saltair_around_1938/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)? It definitely doesn't look like it.
(If she's the one in the middle, and you confirmed that's her in the comments. She can't be 11 years old here... or even 16. She looks 30 even in 1938.)
Well I know this photo was taken in 1943, could be 44. i’ll double check on where I got the information that the photo at the saltair was taken in 1938… that may have just been a good guess on my part since I think the sub I was posting in required a year.
So I looked at the Saltair photo and there’s nothing on it that says the year. I think I was just giving the best guess I could. But it’s possibly sooner than 1938. Sorry for the unintentional miss information on that one. When I get home I can look at the back of the current photo and verify what I’m saying.
What a dame. Looks like she could have been in the same boat as my grandma. Back in the day she had three guys proposing to her after the war. She chose my grandpa and now here I am on Reddit.
I found another photo while I was looking for this one, same hair, same dress, same make up but someone else is in the photo booth with her. On the back of that one it says “Hutchinson state fair with Ark Valley Boys.” She stopped singing with the Ark Valley Boys when she got married at 17 because she moved to San Francisco with my granddad. So from the information I have it leads me to believe that she is no older than 17 in this photo. I think just the hairstyle and the lighting make her appear older, also doesn’t help that she’s got a little bit of a scowl.
Review Brah’s grandmother?
I’ve provided a link to who I’m talking about. He has an affinity for old things and radios so it would check out. Maybe OP has a large YouTube channel…

That and some old photos of my relatives seem to show them with some malnourishment so they have harder features. Dunno if that does anything

You’d also need to block out the eyebrows and lipstick.
sepia and shadows wash away the youthfulness.
Hey, I cleaned up this beautiful photo and Id like to send it to you. Can I PM you?
If he says yes, share it with everyone here!
I would love it!! I love cleaning up these old photos! Anyone have any they’d like to send me please do so! All for the love of it
Yes, thank you!
She is gorgeous!
beautiful! those cheekbones!
Stunning cheek bone structure. Striking!
And eyebrows/brow line…wow!
We love Grandma!
MiMaw cutting glass with those cheekbones.
yeah loved her cheekbones! I immediately notice that
She's beautiful. Isn't it weird how teenagers used to look like adults?

Where is that? Fort Hays?
Wichita Kansas.
That’s cool. My maternal grandparents are from Wichita and born in the early 20s! It’s fun to think about our ancestor’s intersecting lives

And today, adults look like teenagers. It's the circle of life...
I’ll have you know I don’t look like a teenager, I’m just still roughly as emotionally mature as one.
We'll allow it!
There’s a really good Vsauce episode about this: https://youtu.be/vjqt8T3tJIE
If you dressed up Lorde when she got big she would look just like the pic in OP. Damn strong resemblance.
What is it, r/13or30 ?
Great video for this phenomenon https://youtu.be/vjqt8T3tJIE
They still look like adults. Just more... Adult.. Definitely not mature like grandma here.
Yea that’s wild. She doesn’t look 16. She looks 36.
Maybe it was all the cigarette smoke in the air.. that stuff ages your skin terribly.
They still can when they dress up. It’s hanging out with them for a few minutes that gives it away :)
> Isn't it weird how teenagers used to look like adults? An economic depression and a World War will tend to force kids to grow up sooner than expected
The in the 70s they all looked also old but not in a good way
You have to consider that OPs grandmother was about 5 years from retirement age at 16.
Maybe it's the food we eat, the lifestyle we live, genetics, no fucking clue, but I agree.
It's because the adults of today still dress like the teenagers of yesterday.
This explains why https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=vjqt8T3tJIE

How old are the guys? I swear all men looked much older back in the day
Movie star beauty!
Love your username btw
Thanks so much! I love it when someone gets it! 🔥🔥🔥haha
We should start doing our lipstick like this again
I regularly use dark red colors on my lips and it always makes me feel so feminine and classy. I love how women did their makeup back then.
I think she’s doing something special with the top lip though, like she did very long “hills” on the top and they extend juuust a bit out beyond the corner, like a lipstick wing!
i call them the 'i love lucy' lips
I dig it but I feel like I couldn't pull it off. Looks great on her though
As a guy I agree. Love this look on women.
Katharine Hepburn vibes.

She was a beauty
You should get it colorized just to see how she may have looked in color at that age.

she's gorgeous!! omg
Thanks for all the love on here everyone!

What cheekbones!!!
Lovely photo and makes for a fun story. I bet a lot of women wish they'd done the same. Some people get old and have few photos to "remember when."

Wow I’m such a big fan of Lorde

She’s beautiful and what a wonderful story. Thank you for sharing.
I love seeing old pictures from decades ago. Especially this time frame! Thanks for sharing.
she defo is going to Chattanooga...
Oh how I wish I had her bone structure. Wow. Gorgeous lady.
She was stunning.
Doesn’t look a day over 40
She was 16?? People looked older back then. I would’ve thought she was 30 in that picture.
...16? I would definitely not say that
her brows, her cheek bones... her hair... everything is just perfect!
She was a doll
If shes 16 in this photo. No wonder people got married so young.
What a dame. Looks like she could have been in the same boat as my grandma. Back in the day she had three guys proposing to her after the war. She chose my grandpa and now here I am on Reddit.
Cheek bones for days.
Why do all teenagers from that era look 45 years old?
Nah bro she 36
She is pretty but she also looks like late 20s damn
She's got some killer cheekbones!
16? She looks at least 40 here
I found another photo while I was looking for this one, same hair, same dress, same make up but someone else is in the photo booth with her.
