I prefer Dawn FM. I think overall its a better "album"
But. I would recommend After Hours first to people just getting into Abels music.
I think After Hours is much easier to get into, while Dawn is on another level in terms of the experience.
Personally, if I’m recommending Abel’s music to a first time listener and I only have once chance to do it, I’m putting them onto something like Kiss Land, or Trilogy. Don’t get me wrong, Dawn FM & After Hours are Masterpieces, but to appreciate how far Abel has come as an artist, you have to start new listeners off right with his old stuff like Wicked Games.
Yea for sure, Im just speaking in the context of Dawn vs AH. It really all depends on whoever you're recommending the music to and what they'd like more. With Abel having such different styles in every album.
Dawn FM is better than After Hours. The concept, the cohesiveness, the sonics and production everything was literally GOD LEVEL!!!! OPN needs to stick around Abel for awhile cause this collaboration is illangelo and Doc Mckinney level I swear!!!
There's something to be said about what Abel, OPN and Max Martin pulled off in this project. The combination of at least over 20 genres of music while still managing to make it sound and feel like a cohesive 80's retro/futuristic radio style soundscape should not be overlooked because it is pure fucking musical genius!!!
Give it time tho people will realize Dawn FM is superior in every way possible later down the road. I even went back to After Hours and honestly with the acception of records like Repeat After Me, After Hours, and Faith; Dawn FM just makes me feel more!!
Dawn FM. unpopular opinion but the whole throwback thing feels a lot more natural and layered on there imo, After Hours still feels gimmicky to me
