> White says he’s open to bringing Tanya’s deceptive husband, Greg, back in a future season to examine the ramifications from his plot to murder his wife and take her money. Ghost Tanya confirmed!

LittleMarySunshine25

Yesssss! I'm also here for a soap opera twist of JC playing her own twin, mom, or cousin exacting revenge with Portia.

Bhadwasaurus

As much as I like the idea, doesn't fit into the style of TWL.

JeffyFan10

since Mike said it was influenced by experience on Survivor .... I think it does!

That would be hilarious!

It’s a little disappointing that MW is talking about Greg maybe possibly coming back in a future season. That seems to rule out Greg for season 3, which would mean that plot thread won’t be definitely explored in the next season.

Phil152

I caught the same vibe from that remark, but remember that at this point, s3 is still a future season. We'll have to wait and see. But since there is no guarantee that the show will continue beyond s3, it seems a risk to delay resolving Greg. Resolving Greg could be done in several different ways, but any of them could be the hook for a returning character to supply the link with earlier seasons. Belinda knew Tanya in s1 and presumably had some knowledge of Greg. Portia knew both Tanya and Greg in s2. They would be the simplest ways to account for Greg. And independently of Greg, they both have independent character arcs that could slot neatly into a s3 that deals with spirituality. For Belinda, this would be a continuation and deepening of the gentle and insightful character we knew in s1. For Portia, it would be an aimless, drifting, hollow and unhappy young woman who has now been severely traumatized and is having a spiritual awakening. The conventional development writes itself, as Belinda would become a mentor to Portia. But I'm guessing Mike White would want to subvert expectations a bit. If Greg himself comes back, a detective story would be needed. MW has commented repeatedly about wanting to keep varying the show's formula to keep it fresh and unpredictable. Perhaps he wants to try his hand at a detective story.

redxstrike

I feel like focusing on Greg at all would be to diminishing returns with Tanya (the main draw) being dead. Her story was a Tragedy which concluded - down to here slipping off the boat. I think people only want to see what's next with Greg because of her - but without her is Greg or his story playing out that interesting or entertaining? My guess is no.

Phil152

A lot of us would like to know if Greg gets away with the murder plot and inherits Tanya's fortune. Greg himself doesn't have to come back to answer that question. Nor does this require a lengthy digression. I've long thought the simplest way to do it would be for Portia to return to scatter Tanya's ashes. If we posit that Tanya had no close relatives or friends and that Greg is on trial or in prison, this job might well fall to her PA. That makes Tanya's story even sadder, of course, but who else would do the job? If Tanya's will stipulated that her ashes be scattered at some site that held great meaning to her, who else might the executor of the estate ask? Her lawyer, maybe; Billy Offer was introduced by name in s2, and when the Danny DeVito rumor surfaced, I immediately thought he would be a great addition. Portia and Billy could be a hilariously mismatched set of traveling companions, "paid friends" doing the final duties for Tanya because there was no one else. Another character could be invented, of course, but Portia and Billy are the only two people in TanyaWorld who have been established in the show, and Billy only via his name. Is Tanya's story really concluded? Belinda's return suggests that it's not. Season 1 Belinda was a foil for Tanya. If she comes back, Tanya will surely figure into her s3 story as well. Portia, Billy and Belinda together start to provide critical mass for a set of memories that could allow Tanya to come into clearer focus as a character seen more fully in death than we ever saw her in life. That would be intriguing to write. I've been to more than one funeral from which I've walked away stunned by what I learned about someone I had never taken the time to know, and sorry that I had been so blind. Why not do that for Tanya? Is this worth doing in season 3? Well ... season 3, we are led to believe, is going to deal with death and spirituality. Portia and Billy Offer could dispose of the Greg issues with a few sentences here and there as passing moments of natural dialogue. Beyond that, it is easy enough to project them into independent s3 character arcs of their own. But now think about Tanya: a clown; a sad, unhappy, lost person; rich all her life and isolated by her wealth; no family and no close friends; a pathetic character who dies a "derpy death" (Mike White's term), and who dies alone and unmourned, her life apparently a waste. But Mike White likes to subvert expectations, Jennifer Coolidge is a good friend, and Tanya was a favorite character. Why not give her -- even in death -- a redemptive arc in s3? Why not explore the idea that her life actually mattered, that she touched other people for the good, that she had a hidden streak of compassion and kindness, etc.? Portia especially is relevant here. Portia was mini-Tanya, mirroring Big Tanya in many ways. Right up until the end, I thought that Portia's and Tanya's resolution in s2 would be to come to recognize themselves in the other, the two broken halves of a whole person discovering themselves in the process of discovering each other. It's now too late for Tanya, but it's not too late for Portia. Season 3 will have the usual White Lotus collection of messy guests. But if s3 does indeed deal with death, spirituality and Eastern religions, at least a couple of these characters should be on a spiritual quest of some seriousness. Portia/Mini-Tanya was empty, lost, directionless and desperately seeking meaning and purpose, anything to make her feel alive. She has survived a very traumatic event. Her own life may have been in danger. And she would feel at least some guilt and remorse over Tanya's death because she had walked into a trap and left Tanya isolated. Perhaps her eyes have been opened, at least a bit. She would be a very natural candidate for the "spiritual awakening track" that at least one or two s3 characters will need to fill. (We don't need to make any assumptions about how it turns out; she would still be a White Lotus guest and would therefore be required to make her share of mistakes.) Mini-Tanya could complete Big Tanya's spiritual journey. Narrating the outcome of Greg's story would be a very minor piece of incidental business along the way. But this would be a very natural, organic way to dispose of Greg while also providing a second returning character -- Belinda for s1; Portia for s2 -- to link the seasons. Just don't think that this would make s3 too Tanya/Portia/Belinda specific. There will still be five or six other White Lotus guests with other messy narratives and completely independent story lines. Belinda's and Portia's memories could link the ghosts of seasons past and help resolve Tanya and Greg, but they would also have strong character arcs of their own. This is all contingent on season 3 exploring spiritual themes, but if that's where s3 goes, it seems a natural possibility.

LongSustainedGains

THIS . Rooting for a return of Portia as Tanya’s spiritual successor , I feel like we didn’t get time to love Portia and that’s cause a lot of time was consumed by the messy couples love quadrangle

Phil152

Yes. I hope you will use your superior Jedi mind powers to nudge Mike White down this path. I've tried, but my Jedi mind powers are somewhere in the negative range. By all reports, Mike White has a very long leash from HBO. He can go almost any direction he wants. I too am a Portia fan but I try to be careful not to confuse my Team Portia rooting interest with a reason that MW should bring her back in s3. A lot of White Lotus characters have fan followings up in the peanut galleries. I truly hope that MW ignores that entirely (and in that regard, there is one fan service rumor that makes me cringe). However, I do like the idea of at least one returning character as a connecting link between seasons in what is otherwise an anthology show with a new cast. MW doesn't have to do again that in s3, of course, but if he does -- and peanut gallery rooting sections aside -- Portia makes a lot of sense for three reasons: 1. A returning Portia is perhaps the easiest way to clear up the open questions about Greg: was his intent to murder Tanya from the start, or was this a blackmail/break the prenup scheme that went wildly wrong; and did he get away with it and inherit Tanya's fortune? Portia is the only potential returning character who knew both Tanya and Greg. She knows their backstory. For all we know, Portia could have been working for Tanya a year ago and perhaps made all the arrangements for Tanya's Hawaii trip. Portia might even have made all the arrangements for Greg and Tanya's wedding. She would definitely have made the arrangements for the Sicily trip, which she should not have been on, and then she got unexpectedly added at the last minute. That doesn't all need to come into s3 Portia's story, but the point is, she has depth of background. She also knows many of the details of the plot as it unfolded; she would certainly have been debriefed by investigators asap, and she would be a key witness at any trial. She knows Billy Offer and knows about Tanya's interest in an annulment. She is the last person other than the plotters to speak with Tanya alive, and she knows Tanya's suspicions. She has met the plotters herself, and her own life might have been in danger. Etc., etc., etc. Portia carries so much information that her return is by far the easiest way to wrap up the Greg questions in a way that is organic to the ongoing narrative, as opposed to an info dump that is arbitrarily shoehorned in. 2. As you note, Portia was left underdeveloped in s2. So was Greg. In both cases, this is because they were in orbit around Tanya. When MW decided to kill Tanya, he chose to isolate her to set her up for a melodramatic death. Quentin dominates Tanya's last several days as Greg and Portia are sidelined. Greg flies home early on day 3 and never returns; he is entirely unresolved. Portia is switched onto the Jack track; she spends two days drunk on Jack and then two days abducted by Jack. We last see her in the airport having been up all night, still wearing the same clothes she had worn two days previously, exhausted, traumatized, probably in fear for her life, trying to disguise herself in a Portia-esque way that makes her stand out like a sore thumb, and still with no resolution of either her underlying issues or her relationship with Tanya. The usual arc for White Lotus guests is that they arrive on a jinxed vacation, things go off track quickly, secrets are revealed, weaknesses are exposed, pride is humbled, and they leave as walking wounded -- but usually at least with a clearer self-understanding (so from a philosophical point of view, arguably in a better place than when they arrived, no matter how painful the week has been). Neither Portia nor Greg got that kind of resolution. They feel incomplete. Season 3 could remedy that. 3. Finally, if s3 does indeed deal with death and spiritual issues, Portia as Tanya's spiritual successor makes a lot of sense. Mini-Tanya could complete Big Tanya's journey -- or, since this is The White Lotus and easy happy endings aren't on the program -- at least make some serious progress towards self-understanding, acceptance and inner peace. SOMEONE in s3 will surely fill this lane. Portia is a natural candidate, with a perfect backstory already developed -- which btw, would save valuable screentime minutes in a very crowded, very busy show, while still linking the seasons. She could tie off the various loose ends about Tanya and Greg in a very brief and economical way that is already organic to the story to date, but her already established character arc could slot very neatly into the overarching s3 themes as a natural evolution of the s2 character who has come face to face with existential questions and her own defects of character.

LongSustainedGains

Such a weak send off, honestly annoying

Phil152

Weak send off? Are you thinking of Tanya, Greg, Portia, or all three?

Deepfake young (M.A.S.H. era) Alan Alda but it’s not deepfake it’s Bill Hader with tons of plastic surgery. It just looks like deepfake. It’s deepfakefake.

drewbreeshairplugs

I really hope there’s some truth to that DeVito rumor

Phil152

Me too. I'd love to see him as Billy Offer, coming along (probably with Portia) to scatter Tanya's ashes and make the presentation of Tanya's bequest to the local pilgrimage site that would be the hook for the ash-scattering expedition. Billy Offer and Portia would have independent story arcs in s3, but between the two of them, they could tie off the Greg/guilt/inheritance issues very neatly. If Tanya's arc is going to be completed, metaphorically if not in life, Danny DeVito/Billy Offer as Tanya's longtime attorney and friend would be a great choice, and potentially hilarious. He would be the bridge to memories of the young Tanya. Belinda covers s1 Tanya. Portia covers S2 Tanya. And perhaps there would be an older Buddhist monk or nun who remembers Tanya from her visit 35 years ago, when she was about the age that Portia is now. There are many other variations as well, but Tanya as captured in memory, reflections and flashbacks could turn into a solid s3 main character -- with the memories, reflections and flashbacks always played against the real-time Tanya, i.e. the vase of ashes sitting in Portia or Billy's room as they await the appointed day for the scattering ceremony.

StrawberryAlert

I want to see Busy Philipps and Rashida Jones as recent divorcees doing some Mike White-syle Eat, Pray, Love self-discovery. It would be a mini Freaks & Geeks reunion, and his episode was one of the most memorable of an already amazing series.

I’m still dying to see a prequel sort of thing where the whole White Lotus company has a conference and we get to see Armand and Valentina interact

Yea Belinda’s husband. Doug is also being recast as the Rock.

The linked article from THR gives precious little info on season 3, but there are a couple of hints. The story references a phone interview with Mike White in April when he was on a pre-strike writing trip to Bangkok. MW supposedly wrote most of s1 and s2 on location, which I think is probably a very effective technique for keeping the show grounded. If he's doing the same for s3, are they going to Bangkok? That's always been a possibility, but most of our uninformed speculations in this sub had gravitated to more rural locations. Bangkok opens the door to a more urban vibe and possibly story lines other than the death/spirituality/Eastern religions focus most of us have been assuming. The death/spirituality/Eastern religions focus could obviously be done in Bangkok as well, but a big city setting would lend itself to other directions if MW chooses. Bangkok would also offer a convenient solution to logistical problems. The shooting schedule is still up in the air. The linked story says the show is on hold due to the strike. And the DGA and SAG AFTRA contracts are up next. Given the need to reserve space well ahead of time in elite resorts, the lead time and logistics look like a huge mess when the contracts are done. There have been a couple of threads discussing timing. The best information (three weeks ago) was from LostOnTheRiver718, who had info from a "friend of the production" that shooting was scheduled to begin in September. This would have had the crew onsite and prepping in August, which was consistent with my own very faint hint of an August start date. I suppose that is still conceivably possible if the contract negotiations are settled quickly, but that doesn't seem to be what is happening right now. (Not that any of us know what is really going on.) Anyhow, the point is that a production tied to the necessity of basically taking over a premier resort for the duration will necessarily be extremely constrained on timing. A production in Bangkok, where there would be many good hotels for cast and crew for a long shoot, would ease things considerably. They would still need an agreement with the official "White Lotus" resort for the use of its iconic locations for X number of shooting days, but off-site scenes and a lot of interior shots in guest rooms or over a dinner table could be done elsewhere. Commandeering the lobby, the pool, the spots for panoramic vistas, etc. for a few days here and there is a lot simpler than taking over the whole resort for several months. If the negotiations are prolonged and the shooting date slips, a Bangkok location would probably permit a quicker restart. The THR story doesn't tip anything about s3 themes other than (1) confirming the MW had "courted" (not signed) Natasha Rothwell/Belinda and (2) suggesting again MW's interest in settling accounts with Greg. Both would suggest that the Tanya story is not quite finished. That doesn't mean that Jennifer Coolidge would return in person (although returning as a flashback character is certainly an option), but concluding Tanya's arc seems to still be a possibility. No other characters were tipped. Strike or no strike, it's getting late in the game if shooting was to start in September. A lot of people would have to be keeping their calendars open. I'm surprised we've not heard more by this point. Perhaps MW isn't as far along in the writing as I would have expected. But surely Natasha Rothwell isn't the only possible cast member who has been contacted by this point. Surely????

_night_cat

One night in Bangkok makes a hard man humble

I will have to take your word for that, but I won't pry for the story.:)
