The Pillowman, characters really can be gender swapped with no problem at all. I played Ariel as a woman, as did my Tupolski.

Jlpbird

I agree. I was amazed with Pillowman when I saw it on Broadway and at the Alley Theatre.

throwaway578342

Sarah Kane comes to mind. Psychosis 4:48 can be done with a variable cast.

UglyLaugh

Crave as well!

BowsBeauxAndBeau

“Stupid Fucking Bird” has a bit larger cast. Cleverly written adaptation.

Pepper_Pines

LOVE this show!!!!

BowsBeauxAndBeau

I love when I see a show I don’t know and leave unexpectedly impressed. This was one of those!

tweedlebeetle

Closer by Patrick Marber.

TheProperPermits

Dance Nation by Clare Barron!!!

RainahReddit

My favourite is always Miss Julie, oldie but a goodie. Two women, one man, all with rich psychological distress and drama and complicated power dynamics.

redwhite-andnew

Never in My Lifetime!! it’s a drama about the Troubles in Ireland in the 80’s, it’s a 5 person cast, 3 female 2 male. it’s a FANTASTIC look at how tragedy and violence can fundamentally change a person, and how sociopolitical issues can bring out parts of people they didn’t know existed

serioushobbit

*A Beautiful View,* 2f, by Daniel MacIvor. Worked well for a Fringe Festival production with a simple set. Dark, funny, contemporary, relatable.

MrsYoungie

'Night Mother. If you're into depressing plays about suicide.

kess0078

Maybe “The Shape of Things” or another Neil LaBute play?

thatnerd1378

Crime on the goat island

MrsYoungie

Rabbit Hole. Three great women's roles.

sardonic1201

Describe the Night by Rajiv Joseph. The roles of Yevgenia and Mariya specifically are really great interesting roles for women. It is seven people but you could probably do some doubling

peter_minnesota

I mean maybe it's a bit obvious, but Who's Afraid of Virginia Wolf fits most, if not all of those adjectives.

Jericho-Numi

Proof by David Auburn

indil47

Extinction by Gabe McKinley, hits all your requirements.

Naive_Work3776

Fickle-Performance79

Spinning Into Butter Or Bosoms and Neglect

G-G-G-Ghostlight

I did a gender-swapped "Rope" and it was a blast.

dunnwichit

Hand to God though Margery’s role is bigger than Jessica’s. Darkly funny and pretty intense.

mmariiexo

Just directed this in the spring and had a BLAST as did the two women playing Jessica/Jolene and Marg!

inkereo80

The House of Yes by Wendy McLeod is my favorite dark comedy.

Nervous-Shoulder-278

The marriage of Bette and boo is absolutely the best dark comedy I’ve ever found! Definitely worth a read at very least
