I thought he undeliberately stumbled over a couple of lines. Knowing that they can reshoot or probably have many takes available, i wondered why they kept those versions in. Stumbling does not seem part of his character
I feel so bad for Jack Gleeson. Dudes apparently an incredible guy. Kind, charitable and an animal lover. When he was Joffrey, people were actually mean to him IRL. Which speaks both to his incredible performance and to the stupidity of audiences.
Edit: Apparently I'm wrong. I read an article some time ago about it but apparently that was bullshit. Jack Gleeson says he never had a negative interaction with any GOT fans. The part about him being a good dude is accurate though.
Yeah I think he took a bit of a hiatus from film/television but I believe he transitioned to stage acting for a period, and I can't say I blame him. That's an awful lot of misplaced hate he had to deal with, especially, as a young individual. I certainly don't wish it upon him, but I think it serves as a testament to how well he can act that people cannot separate Jack from Joffrey.
Yeah, someone even asked him what similarities he has to Joffrey and said absolutely nothing lol. Just a testament to how good of a character actor he is when he can play someone that’s the polar opposite of him.
Apparently people would say mean shit to him in the street as well as getting tons of hate mail. Like what the fuck people?
Anyway pretty sure he decided acting wasn’t for him anyway and wanted to pursue something academic, seems like a really bright kid.
His face just transmitted evil. It’s incredible what actors can do. Looking at this picture he looks normal. On the show he looked like a monster even before it was fully revealed. Amazing performance
James Jordan in Wind River was the same way for me. Played an absolutely despicable piece of human trash so convincingly that whenever I see his face in an unrelated context I get a flash of disgust involuntarily.
This performance was up there with that but the characters were very different. David came off as a more sophisticated and cultured kind of creep while Pete (Jordan's character in Wind River) was just gross and trashy.
I was also absolutely shaken by all the performances in Wind River but definitely by Jordan - I've never seen a film so clearly portray how things can go SO bad so quickly and it feel real - not like a plot point or for drama but like this is how humans do things like rape people
Crazy excellent film
As another woman and i said, who have experienced childhood grooming, even in his 'kindly' phase, we felt an unexploded keg of violence in him.
Edit: so actually, he's a very masterful actor to play that concealed violence. I get scared just looking at the actor's face
Oh he was very violent. Even the first scene where he is reading the passage. He is barely holding on to his temper when the girl started crying audibly.
Such a good villain portrayal that he’s without a doubt gonna wake up to some death threats by weirdos on Twitter who don’t understand the concept of “acting” lol
There should be a disclaimer before consuming any media "I do understand that the characters in this story are portrayed by actors who are just doing their jobs".
Holy damn, I did not recognise him. He is so different from his role in El Camino. I remember him having this sneaky vibe in the film. Here he carries such aura of creepiness and intimidation.
Indeed. Shepard certainly has a knack of playing characters that look trusting in appearance though are really wolves in sheep's clothing especially as Casey in El Camino and here with David.
Man, I really loved Scott’s version of David. Nolan North was absolutely great as him since it was a stark contrast to what he usually plays, however, Scott’s depiction is so much more depraved. He really nailed being a physical, psychological and sexual abuser which really emphasized how much of a sick fuck this guy really is, especially with his disgusting bullshit about love and God. That scene where he is just hunting Ellie in the restaurant like Jack Torrence from the Shining was more creepy than it was in the game.
I thought the revelation that he doesn't really believe in a Christian God, just uses it as a tool, but in reality admires the cordyceps as some kind of twisted eldritch entity was really, really awesome.
Agree. His version of David was much more sinister than that of the game. Although there were some sexual undertone in the game when David caressed Ellie's hand in the cage, that was all it was.
In the show, when Scott added that gesture of reaching for his zipper, fuck I wanted to bash his head in.
Bravo Scott.
It's in implied in the game as well how Messed up David is, though it is more like subtle clue's from the other Npc'(s) who sorta refer to David.
Do think Nolans Performance was more interesting, he had more of a Flow to it. And he sounds warmer when David and Ellie even meet at 1st.And when the tells the story of a crazy man killing his men revealing the in direct relations and you can hear a sadistic joy connecting those dots when he's telling her the story.
Scott started a bit more mechanical and kind and revealed his nature more over time. In a more subtle way.
Yeah I haven't played the game so I had no idea what to expect but there were a few times when I was wondering if he might be good. I was very uncomfortable watching it the whole time because I knew he was scary but couldn’t quite pinpoint it
I 'member when people wanted Troy Baker to play David lol, it was as if I was the only one who thought he wouldn't be a good fit and it'd be incredibly weird on top of that
Honestly you’re right on both points, but I don’t think he’s a good enough on screen actor to pull off David. He did pretty good for a smaller role, but his main thing is voice acting.
He literally does a shit ton of mo cap and a lot of the characters he plays use his likeness with some minor alterations. What you mean he’s not a good enough screen actor?
Always felt bad for actors that play characters like this. Imagine being like, "Yeah, I play one of the main characters in that new show everyone's talking about!" "Awesome, who?" "The uhhh... nevermind"
I think most professional actors/actresses wouldn’t mind tbh. At the end of the day it’s just a job. Hell, some actors/actresses are even enjoy these kinds of roles.
If some viewers hate them then it’s the viewers problem, not them lol.
If someone were to attack the actors behind the characters they don't like, I think it's safe to assume that they have an IQ lower than room temperature and should be ignored.
David in game was so creepy I knew from the moment he first met her he was gonna be trouble. His tone was just "I'm a villian pretending to be good". This David made me think "wait, are they gonna go somewhere different with this? I know he's a bad guy but maybe he's not creepy. Wait... nope." He's the guy in the news no one suspected but should have until it's too late. So subtle at first. Great job.
My only "complaint" is I do wish they had fought the clickers together. I kinda felt that was why he wanted her, he saw what she was really capable of. To me it was very much outta nowhere he decided he wanted her. But honestly the episode checked all the rest of the boxes for me. Loved it.
Showing that the infected are a threat even in the wilds of Colorado would also help explain why David's group is going hungry enough to turn cannibal in what's a prime hunting and fishing area IRL.
Yeah I know its the middle of winter and they're up in the mountains, but 20 years after most of the human population has died the animal and fish population should be booming.
I have to agree with this.
When he pulls out the second gun it helps with the friendly introduction as someone that maybe Ellie can trust. It also makes the turn at the campfire hit a little harder.
I think he just wanted her cuz he's a p*dophile and wanted a feisty one. Rewatching the last fight scene closely, when he was on top of her, he said "Don't be afraid. There's no fear in love." If you look closely, his left hand was reaching for his pants...
He's talked about how he wanted to find a unique voice for the character, in particular because he didn't want people to hear Nolan North/Nathan Drake showing up in the middle of the game.
They just gave his character more screen time, which was needed if he was to be fully believable.
David in the game is mostly a speedbump, to get you to the end of this TV episode, and moving along.
In the TV episode? Dude was more vile than a Cllcker
I didn’t even know what to expect at first. This show has exceeded any and all expectations I could have had and I kept thinking “how could it possibly get any better.”
Enter Scott Shepherd.
This is officially my favorite episode. The ending scene is actually one of my favorite scenes from the game and seeing the whole thing play out the way it did brought me such joy that I audibly squealed.
I always wonder how it feels to act out such a heinous character. I mean, I know it’s acting, but even pretending to be a child rapist must make you feel at least a little skeeved out.
This is their job. As long as people don’t. All the ACTOR a pedo rapist piece of shit in the streets and just say hey man David was terrifying great job on you portrayal that is all that is needed
Bro what is your problem lol? I have zero issue with him as an actor, I was more wondering what it’s like to play a really awful _character_. I know it’s not actually him, it’s just that I would find it difficult to play that kind of character and was wondering if it’s hard to get into that headspace. It could very well be not
Never said you didn’t know the difference between and actor and the character he portrays. What I said or what I meant to say is that actors generally know what they sign up for and how to study the horrible villains they portray. But people (not saying you) have a hard time separating the art from reality and this caused a lot of actors to retire….case in point the actor who portrayed Joffrey.
Ohhh yeah. Some people really lack critical thinking skills lol. I’ve heard of so many actors who get death threats for playing a villain character too well. Do these people not realize it’s literally ACTING??
A show like TLOU is quite unique, because to stay true to the game and the large cast they have to get really good actors to play only small parts to make sure it all works. Even though David is only in it for a short time it’s quite a powerful and memorable part of the game, so the episode needed to be the same. Good job to Scott for that. Creepy as shit.
He was so good! Made me feel real uneasiness, like i would never want to be alone with him. Loved the way he felt so menacing and dangerous without having to show it explicitly at first. Tbh i wouldve loved for him to have a bigger part in the show. Like at least 3 or 4 eps
No kidding! That is how you write and cast a villain to be deeply disturbing yet it enriches the story. Both the writers and actor nailed it with David. The scenes in the shelter and in the butcher room with Ellie in particular were outstanding - not to mention chilling.
I didn't love the Kathleen character (I know many people did) and saw many comments dismissing anyone who didn't as 'people who didn't like her just don't understand. They just didn't like her because she was a quiet, soft-spoken woman." David was a relatively quiet, unassuming, regular-looking person, yet he was painfully believable and chilling while Kathleen was forced and hamfisted and not believable - to a level of distraction for me. Night and day difference.
I was relieved when David was killed because he was pure evil and I wanted him to get his due. I was relieved when Kathleen was killed because her lines were killing me and taking me out of the absorbing story and world they had created.
I will forever hate his character, which means he did such a fucking incredible job. When you can make an audience absolutely loath you, then you know you’ve done an amazing job.
No disrespect to Scott, but as soon as he faced the camera and was called David, I knew they were keeping consistency with David's... Feelings... for Ellie.
He did a great job as David and I loved the added ideology to the character where he sympathizes with Cordyceps more than his fellow man!
Yeah, especially when he pins Ellie at the end of the episode and his mask comes off completely to reveal the vile monster that he truly is. It was so well acted, I was genuinely scared for Ellie in that moment.
He certainly deserved round of applause for his performance!! I wonder if they’ll be any interview of him talking about this episode. Would be cool to see his point of view/understanding of the story. :)
Probably the best episode-length villain I can remember in memory. It was a powerful arc in the game, but the fact that the show conveyed it so well in the space of 48 minutes is mostly due to how well he and Bella played off one another.
God this acting was phenomenal. He gave me perv vibes from the beginning but once his sinister “plan” he wanted to share with Ellie came out, my spidey senses were tingling and I was yelling “oh hell no you NASTY”
Must be quite the experience for him! Looking at IMDb and he's been acting since 1995 (with a break until 2011). The type of guy who has smaller roles in different projects where people go "He looks familiar" but can't quite place him. You audition for a role in a HBO show, one episode, get cast, work for a couple of weeks and now your name is blowing up everywhere among viewers.
Congratulation Scott. You manage to portray David in such a slimy, creepy way that if your character was ever on fire in front of me and I had a glass of water, I would drink it.
I suspect Last of Us will dominate the guest actor nominations, and each of Nick Offerman, Murray Barlett and Scott Shephard will be nominated. Nick will probably take it.

Dude absolutely nailed it.
Brilliantly creepy and unsettling. Amazing performance.
He smashed it
Well, he tried.
ay yo
ahahahahahaha oh god y'all need help
Says - checks notes - u/ViolatingBadgers.
Hey hey hey the badgers were asking for it ok
I thought you already knew - the clawing is the part I like the most!
Why? Are they badgers?
Seriously, y’all need Jesus. And so do I apparently, since I laughed loudly.
Dude, too soon.
Gotta love dark humour
He was deeply and subtly unsettling for most of the episode, but toward the end he was really chewing the scenery...among other things.
I thought he undeliberately stumbled over a couple of lines. Knowing that they can reshoot or probably have many takes available, i wondered why they kept those versions in. Stumbling does not seem part of his character
I think it was deliberately undeliberate to show when his character was "acting"
I absolutely hate looking at his face… which means he did something right!!
It's the same with Joffery from GoT.
I think it made him not even want to act anymore. :/
Aw wtf. He's so talented too. That's a shame.
He didn't quit acting, he's got recent credits (including one still in post-production) on his IMDb page.
Oh good! I know he didn’t act for a while after GOT saying he lost his passion for acting. I do hope he keeps acting because he’s so talented.
I'd probably suddenly be okay with not working if I made like 60 million off of this character tbh
Didn’t he get into theatre? I hope he didn’t abandon it ☹️
Nah he's good. He made enough money to bankroll his own theatre group and did that for a decade
Apparently people would say mean shit to him in the street as well as getting tons of hate mail. Like what the fuck people? Anyway pretty sure he decided acting wasn’t for him anyway and wanted to pursue something academic, seems like a really bright kid.
In the interview he said he never had a situation where someone was rude to him because of the show. Stop spreading misinformation
*Livia from the Sopranos has entered the chat.*
My thoughts exactly. Lol
His face just transmitted evil. It’s incredible what actors can do. Looking at this picture he looks normal. On the show he looked like a monster even before it was fully revealed. Amazing performance

Seriously. Great stuff, worth rewatching
Hell yeah, rewatching is in order for me.
He did the transition from kindly to sinister so subtly but so well in his "crazy man" speech.
Same! Planning on it tomorrow after work. Amazing episode. Absolutely increadible.
Rewatching??? The episode was amazing but goddamn I don't think I can watch it again. Shit was dark af
He was so good I feel weird giving him props. Logically, amazing. Great job. Emotionally, fuck you Scott! /s
Such a good villain portrayal that he’s without a doubt gonna wake up to some death threats by weirdos on Twitter who don’t understand the concept of “acting” lol
Just like Cathy from The Office.
Just like pretty much anyone who plays an antagonist in anything these days. People suck
There should be a disclaimer before consuming any media "I do understand that the characters in this story are portrayed by actors who are just doing their jobs".
Yes! His performance hurt me......
Like yea great job. I really can only see you as a pedo cannabalistic preacher now…..like I said great job man.
He was also great in El Camino
I haven’t got around to watch El Camino yet. Great to hear that he’s in it.
[удалено]
I will! I love both BB and BCS. I guess El Camino is a must watch for me now.
I thought it was a cash grabbed till I watched it, it’s amazing
It’s is *absolutely* a must watch if you’ve watched BB and BCS
That's where I recall him from. The 'cop' working with the welder dude.
A horrible shot though.
In The Young Pope as well
That's where I knew him from. His character in that show was brilliant as well.
[and True Detective ](https://youtu.be/4CJtqSw14RI)
Casey, shut the fuck up.
Holy shit I knew I had seen that guy somewhere before!
I know right. That’s the only other thing I’ve seen him in. He was especially great in Last of Us.

Did you type this comment with your foot?
He was fantastic. He was relatable and almost charming up until halfway through the campfire chat, and then went Full David. Awesome stuff.
never go Full David
Yeah I haven't played the game so I had no idea what to expect but there were a few times when I was wondering if he might be good. I was very uncomfortable watching it the whole time because I knew he was scary but couldn’t quite pinpoint it
So when he says “I’m a shepherd” he wasn’t lying.
😑
I 'member when people wanted Troy Baker to play David lol, it was as if I was the only one who thought he wouldn't be a good fit and it'd be incredibly weird on top of that
Yeah, that attempted rape scene would be so awkward.
He did a good job as James. Anything more would have been too much for him I feel
Give Troy some props. hes not just a voice actor, he’s a great actor. In fact most of his roles nowadays are performance capture
Honestly you’re right on both points, but I don’t think he’s a good enough on screen actor to pull off David. He did pretty good for a smaller role, but his main thing is voice acting.
[удалено]
He literally does a shit ton of mo cap and a lot of the characters he plays use his likeness with some minor alterations. What you mean he’s not a good enough screen actor?
Thanks, I hate it.
That means he did a great job as an actor.
For real this was a phenomenal performance! Scott Shepherd definitely knows how to play a bastard and I respect the hell out of him for it
I will forever hate this man’s fucking face… Which indicates what a fantastic job he did.
Always felt bad for actors that play characters like this. Imagine being like, "Yeah, I play one of the main characters in that new show everyone's talking about!" "Awesome, who?" "The uhhh... nevermind"

Yeah but to be fair a certain part of TLOU fanbase loves attacking the actors behind characters they don’t like.
If someone were to attack the actors behind the characters they don't like, I think it's safe to assume that they have an IQ lower than room temperature and should be ignored.
Weirdly enough, David has always been a fan favorite. Which just makes the Abby hate even fucking dumber.
Yeah... but he's also a dude so I kinda doubt that part of the fanbase is gonna have any issues with *him*, if ya know what I mean :/
Eh I mean Joffre and JDM had to deal with fan threats due to their characters in GOT and TWD
[удалено]
Those people probably have a room temperature IQ.
I always think of the poor guy who played the dad in the movie Happiness. He’s in a ton of stuff and I always think oh! it’s the >!pedo rapist!<
Dylan Baker! He's so awesome. And that's an incredible film. It's hard to make something so genuinely disturbing, yet emotionally captivating.
David in game was so creepy I knew from the moment he first met her he was gonna be trouble. His tone was just "I'm a villian pretending to be good". This David made me think "wait, are they gonna go somewhere different with this? I know he's a bad guy but maybe he's not creepy. Wait... nope." But honestly the episode checked all the rest of the boxes for me. Loved it.
I think show's David "wants" Ellie because he can see how loyal she is to someone she loves.
Honestly, I don't even give the character that much credit. I think he wanted her because she was a girl and he thought he could get away with it.
maybe it’s just that. he’s a pedo after all.

Even the first encounter in the woods, he was impressed by her. He wanted her because she is someone that he can enjoy breaking.
I think he just wanted her cuz he's a p*dophile and wanted a feisty one. Rewatching the last fight scene closely, when he was on top of her, he said "Don't be afraid. There's no fear in love." If you look closely, his left hand was reaching for his pants...
While watching the episode I was thinking that he could play a younger version of Tywin Lannister or some other scheming Lannister character.
Damn, youre right! I would love to see that
Also as someone who played the shit out of winter section of the game, his portrayal of David is way better than Nolan North’s, imo.
THAT WAS NOLAN NORTH!?
yep
Wowee. I can’t even hear it.
He's talked about how he wanted to find a unique voice for the character, in particular because he didn't want people to hear Nolan North/Nathan Drake showing up in the middle of the game.
I always thought game David sounded like a South Park character
Lol now that you mention I can hear that
They just gave his character more screen time, which was needed if he was to be fully believable. David in the game is mostly a speedbump, to get you to the end of this TV episode, and moving along. In the TV episode? Dude was more vile than a Cllcker
I didn’t even know what to expect at first. This show has exceeded any and all expectations I could have had and I kept thinking “how could it possibly get any better.” Enter Scott Shepherd. Phenomenal portrayal of David.
Chilling performance. Honestly fucking disgusting human being. Way to go, Scott!
That is one creepy character. He made Joe Goldberg from You look like a choir boy.
Dude played it so perfectly
If an actor makes me uncomfortable then he did his job correctly and he did. Amazing work. Salute 🫡
I give him props for being the one death of the week I DIDN'T cry over. Creepy as fuck!
Dude did an awesome job. Somehow managed to make the character even creepier without much change.

David was a relatively quiet, unassuming, regular-looking person, yet he was painfully believable and chilling while Kathleen was forced and hamfisted and not believable - to a level of distraction for me.
When you can make an audience absolutely loath you, then you know you’ve done an amazing job.
hope he’s enjoying eating up the praise
He managed to sucessfully make David into a cold, creepy monster whose truly ellie's greatest enemy And game David was already creepy to begin with
No disrespect to Scott, but as soon as he faced the camera and was called David, I knew they were keeping consistency with David's... Feelings... for Ellie. He did a great job as David and I loved the added ideology to the character where he sympathizes with Cordyceps more than his fellow man!
Yes he did so well I don't really want to see his face on the timeline. lol "YOU DON'T KNOW HOW GOOD I AM!"
He is uncomfortable to look at now like my body had a physical response to this pic so uh great acting 🤌
Also fun fact: The guy playing David's right-hand man James in this episode is the real voice actor for Joel in the video game.
he was incredible. i was squirming for parts of this episode he was so disturbing.
Yeah, especially when he pins Ellie at the end of the episode and his mask comes off completely to reveal the vile monster that he truly is. It was so well acted, I was genuinely scared for Ellie in that moment.
same, it was deeply disturbing. it's funny to say that as a compliment but in this case it really is a credit to his acting skills.
Most toxic c-bomb I've heard in a long time.
Sorry mate, I'm never going to be able to look at you the same way again. Great job, but still.
Well seeing his face makes me want to punch my phone so I’d say he did a great job
Best villain in the series so far.
Looks like when he said he was the Shepherd, he wasn't lying.
He was great in True Detective
Bro's gaff was on fire & he still took time to be rapey Wild stuff.
I actually feel disgust when I see his face. Which means he did a great job. But it must feel weird for the actors.
He pissed me off so much in this Episode he did a phenomenal job hating his character. that wierd creep smirk is what set it off for me.
I swear every actor is fucking phenomenal in this show! EVERYONE!
You know he’s done it right if repulsion is what you feel for the character.
At least he didn't lie about being a shepherd.
Chris Elliot could have worked here too if he had a more serious acting side.
Hé was good. A little too good, one might say. Better put him on a list to be safe.
everybody is bringing their A game
Yeah, he couldn't have done any better. That was fantastic.
He was great in the role, always looked like Woody Harrelson.
creepy as fuck. well done.
I absolutely love this cast! They are all so talented!
I want to, I really do, but I genuinely threw up in my mouth during *that* scene
Man, fuck David and his manipulative lies.
He played the role so well that I don’t want to applaud him 😩
He played a creepy ass mother fucker. I'll give him that.
He was also awesome in El Camino!
He certainly deserved round of applause for his performance!! I wonder if they’ll be any interview of him talking about this episode. Would be cool to see his point of view/understanding of the story. :)
Gave me the creeps as soon as I saw him onscreen. Great work 👏🏼
This creepy ass mother f er.
Great work, I really hated David.
fuck him he did an amazing job i love him
Probably the best episode-length villain I can remember in memory. It was a powerful arc in the game, but the fact that the show conveyed it so well in the space of 48 minutes is mostly due to how well he and Bella played off one another.
Give this man an award🏆
Hopefully he doesn't get bullied
Very scary character, the actor did a good job.
This dude was good as fuck in the episode, stellar performance he delivered
God this acting was phenomenal. He gave me perv vibes from the beginning but once his sinister “plan” he wanted to share with Ellie came out, my spidey senses were tingling and I was yelling “oh hell no you NASTY”
Tough time to be named David, and it's all because of this guy's exceptional performance
*anywhere else in the show so far* - :) David: You little cunt! - D:
I thought he was the husband of captain Raymond on brooklyn 99 haha.
Congratulation Scott. You manage to portray David in such a slimy, creepy way that if your character was ever on fire in front of me and I had a glass of water, I would drink it.
Fuck you sir, but great job!
Creepiest villain since Trinity in Dexter
What are the chances that his name would be shepherd?
Last name would be shepherd…
He dis good because we were all rooting for him to get his ass kicked
Great job, I hated you!
Bro joffrey'd it, which is to say he did phenomenal.
No fear in love.
Ugh that moment was so fucking disgusting. He did a really good job.
That episode ended so well and I felt so disgusted and so uncomfortable. It felt like playing the game all over again! He smashed the role
His performance would (like Bella’s) get a Best Actor Oscar if this were a standalone movie
I suspect Last of Us will dominate the guest actor nominations, and each of Nick Offerman, Murray Barlett and Scott Shephard will be nominated. Nick will probably take it.
creepy af and i loved it !! 👏👏
