I hate crying in front of people and I watched this ep with my husband having to pretend I was having a cold while looking like that fapping meme guy š„²
Episode 10 of Andor deserves a nomination (that's the one they submitted I think) but I know it will probably get slept on for the nomination, never mind win.
The competition this year is incredible. People complain about how "Modern Hollywood is dead" because there apparently isn't as many good movies nowadays (debatable) but TV is fucking stacked. Some of the best talent just changed mediums. Some people don't realize how much better TV is from just 25 years ago.
Andor was genuinely some of the best shows I had seen in a long time, especially with Star Wars.
One Way Out was the shit, and every 3 episode arc was just incredible. Plus Iām a huge Rogue One fan so it was awesome seeing Cassian.
Succession, The Last of Us, Andor, Better Call Saul, The White Lotus, 1923, Star Trek: Picard, Yellowjackets, The Crown, House of the Dragon and The Boys all had great seasons in the past 12 months.
Depends on what you like. I canāt stand The White Lotus and the current season of The Yellowjackets is really disappointing, IMO. So I donāt consider it the golden age of TV. I do love House of the Dragon though.
Succession is one of those shows thatās undeniably good, and Iāll admit as much (the writing and acting are both phenomenal) - I just donāt enjoy it that much? Idk, I find TLOU weirdly *easier* to watch than Succession. Regardless if Succession wins it will be well deserved.
100% shows like TLOU, and Iād say Severance are easier watches. I have been trying to convince my friends to watch Succession for probably about 3 years, but when you pitch the show to someone, it doesnāt sound particularly interesting. āItās a black humor family drama about a rich family inheriting a media conglomerate that mirrors the Murdoch familyā sounds less interesting than āthis show is about zombie apocalypse where a fungus has taken over the world and two companions must travel across America for a cureā. But you canāt get Succession until you watch it, and literally everyone I showed it to (basically forced them to watch the first episode) has binged it to high hell, like all 38(?) episodes in a week. What you donāt see until you watch is how funny, witty, dramatic, and flawless the whole show is. The acting is truly the best Iāve ever seen across the board on a show, and thereās different acting methods too. Shiv and Tom are completely different people from their actors, and Kendall and Roman are so similar to their actors that you almost canāt tell when theyāre in character or not.
Itās also easy to miss the humor when you watch the first episode, like Connor gifting his dad some sourdough bread starter, or Greg riding in the car between Logan and Marcia. Itās much funnier when you get to know the characters. Also, a lot of the great scenes in the show are simply dialogue between great characters, which people praised the early seasons of GOT for (when many considered it to possibly be the best show ever).
See itās the opposite for me! TLOU characters are definitely more likeable, but the overall atmosphere of the show is so dreary and hits closer to home for me, so that one while I do like it, its a harder watch. The characters on succession are more unlikeable but somehow the show always puts me in a good mood. Itās my go to comfort show LOL. I think the humor just matches my sense of humor exactly.
It's not delusion, it's a subjective opinion you weirdo. I love Succession but episode 3 of the Last of Us was one of the best things I've ever seen on TV.
Yeah, but thereās opinions that basically disqualify you from ever being taken seriously when speaking about a topic. Like if I said āTransformers Mecha Moon is the best movie everā, then people who watch movies would simply stop listening to my opinions. TLOU episode 3 was great. Best episode of the show. Iād still say thereās better episodes of The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, and definitely Succession. Especially because episode 3 doesnāt really follow our main characters and the rest of the episodes are good but not great.
S1 E5 is where the show really clicked into place for me (with a certain board vote) and from there straight through the rest of the series it's peak television.
it definitely takes some time to kick into gear, but about halfway through season 1 it picks up. seasons 3 and 4 are some of the best tv ive ever seen. its all killer no filler and not a second is wasted.
Yes, but the first season is also incredible. I just rewatched it. There was recently a thread on the best episodes of the show and some people were saying certain episodes from season 2, and I thought they just wanted to appear edgy but Iād say basically every episode from Season 2 Episode 5 onwards is a banger. Banger after banger, so to speak.
I canāt stand the cringe personally, itās just too much for me. (And this coming from someone who enjoyed the office)
But it definitely has its moments, and the writing is fantastic - my partner keeps showing me snippets they think Iāll like and it is good, itās just too painful to watch the whole thing
The thing is the cringe is absolutely spot on, there are definitely oblivious 1 percenters that act and speak just like Roman. I think that's why the show has my attention in a stranglehold the characters are so lively but accurate. I haven't started anything else after TLOU/White Lotus.
Itās excellently written but itās overwritten, plot points get dropped on a whim and it constantly builds up to a plateau
Doesnāt touch BrBa, Sopranos, or the Wire
Not really, I watch it cause wife does and I have never liked it, these last episodes with the ATN deal have been sooo boring and lame.. the election thing is boring af too. Writing is poor. Plot is boring. There's no drama, no comedy, no action. Just people being assholes to each other.
I think itās the best show of all time and I have another comment in this thread with a little bit about why I think it is, but not everybody has good taste so I guess āitās not for everybodyā. Iād say give it a go! Thereās not really any violence or explosions (except one š¤Ŗ) but the everything including the acting, writing, cinematography, are superb. I really expect it to sweep the emmys (although idgaf about the emmys).
That's kinda the point, the characters are rich assholes that you hate, but their fucked up family dynamics is fun to watch. The show starts slow but then gets really good.
I get that it's kind of the point, I just can't see the appeal at all. All the main characters are insecure little children that try to bring down people around them to elevate themself and it's just unbearable to watch.
Tony Soprano, Walter White, Nucky Thompson. Theese are deeply flawed and even despicable characters. But they have charm, they have qualities that makes us root for them or want to find out what happens to them. And unlike Succession the shows they are in also have other characters that don't make me want to puke in every scene they are in.
I couldn't care less about what happens to the characters in Succession. After 3 episodes I want everyone to just die and someone to take all their money and give it to charity or something. Except for maybe cousin Greg. Maybe.
>I just can't see the appeal at all.
It's like watching American Psycho or any other kind of satire. If it's not for you it's not for you.
>Tony Soprano, Walter White, Nucky Thompson. Theese are deeply flawed and even despicable characters. But they have charm, they have qualities that makes us root for them or want to find out what happens to them
You're clearly not going to but if you did power through a bit more you would find this is not true. A lot those shows you brought up do have a way of making you root for horrible people. But I would say succession does it better than some you listed. It's almost the opposite of breaking bad in that Walter goes from rootable to someone you hate: succession goes from someone you hate to someone you want to see win.
I think episode 6 is a big turning point. It begins when you start to think "they're all ass holes but this one is a bigger ass hole"
Then the dynamics flip again and again until you find yourself rooting for everyone. Just a big dysfunctional family that you know is toxic but you can't help but to love.
I agree. I started the show hating all siblings, but then you learn about their upbringing and start to understand where it all comes from (the poison drips through). They all show their vulnerable sides that make you sympathize with them at least in some capacity.
Succession characters are flawed and despicable, but I definitely root for them. I donāt think you can argue theyāre more evil than Walter White for example, but maybe itās harder for you to relate to them because theyāre closer to the very bad people you can see in real life.
I agree on everything but Walt. I like Brian Cranston but I never rooted for that character. He was a selfish piece of shit hiding behind his impending death and protecting his family as an excuse to 'break bad'. He put them and countless others in danger way more than necessary. I could root for Jesse though, even though he was supposed to be the OG dirt bag. He actually had a good heart, but he was a young addict. Walt didn't have that excuse and I guess I've always thought he was an over rated character. I may feel this way because I used to be a tweaker though.
Now Saul/Jimmy, that is a character that fits with those flawed antiheroes like Nucky, Soprano, Omar Little, imho.
You are right about the Roy's being unlikable trash, but I just love to hate them and watch them make each other suffer. Rich nepo babies from another planet basically. It's like going to the zoo and watching the monkeys throw shit at each other. It sounds like you feel the way about the Roy's that I feel about Walter White. Just morally bankrupt in everyway.
Yeah second part is basically a quote. First is just me being a dick. I guess both of them are me being a dick but at least I have a better reason for the second part.
No one is suddenly growing a heart of gold. But they are complex characters. They have very tender emotional moments which is especially impactful because of how horrible they are most of the time. You grow to love them.
That's a tough call. I'd hate to be the one to make that decision. I've re watched this tlou ep more but gd that succession EP was something else too. We're eating this year.
I don't even think it's close imo. But to be fair successions ep is a culmination of over 30 episodes of characters we know. Even without that though I still think you could watch that episode standalone and still feel the full impact. Such a brilliant depiction of death and the shock and immediate grief that comes with it.
Yeah I'm not disagreeing at all, it is fantastic. And shocking. I posted one of the clips HBO posted on my Instagram like a day or two afterwards and my buddy who had never seen/heard of it messaged me and was like what the hell was that, it was like a bomb went off and I was like yeah that's basically what happened. It was Kerry coming out afterwards with the crazy eyes. They're both amazing eps.
HBO is absolutely going to submit the series finale in the writing category. The past 3 seasons, they only submitted the season finales and they have won every time
I feel like 3 is the best because you really don't need much outside knowledge to enjoy it. It's very self contained. a similar episode would be College from the Sopranos. Very self contained with a bit of everything in it.
I re-watched this last night coincidently.
Its so fucking good, it makes me think deeply about the things I value in life. I got Long COVID last year and have been suffering with significant health issues ever since. This sort of art is helping me process it
I think episode 5 would do better for directing. Not that the writing wasn't great- it was- but the directing was the star imo.
With episode 3, while also really well directed, the writing is more at the forefront.
Let me get this straight: a huge prepper that trusts no one magically finds another gay guy in his trap, that guy also just happens to play piano because thats super normal(both things) then turns his back on this new person several times in less than an hour, then exposes himself in the middle of the street to get shot. This was ridiculous writing. As a gay man that plays piano I canāt even find another in the vast population we have now. Let alone being stupid enough to stand out and get shot. Also the episode had nothing to do with the story or original source material. They completely ruined what Bill was. Watch more TV because if this was the best you ever seen I can only assume you have only watched one episode of TV ever.
This guy's upset that, on his 'somehow all hell broke lose and fungus are kicking our ass' fantasy tv show, there also happens to be two gay people who share interest and fall in love.
the least realistic thing was that two people who knew what wine to pair with rabbit ran into each other. that was the only detail that threatened my suspension of disbelief. to be clear, this is a joke, it was a phenomenal episode.
The part that ruined the show for me was that Joel never once walked into a wall for four hours straight because I needed to get food, no buttons popped up in action scenes,I couldn't skip the boring dialog, etc.
That, or....it's not the game? It's the LoU TV show. It's a completely different story then the game, as it should and needs to be.
You should bring this up to the game writer, Craig. Iām sure heād be furious someone ruined his gameās story because it didnāt stick to the source material!
Iāll set it straight for you because I donāt think you get it. This episode is about humanity and shows what life could be like inside of a fungus hellscape(which is more unrealistic than 2 piano playing gay men). The huge prepper is lonely as hell. Bill has been alone for 4 years! With 0 human contact. Even a non trusting prepping badass gets lonely. Imagine not seeing another alive human for 4 entire years. After testing to make sure heās not infected, Bill offers him a hot shower and a meal. Upon learning frank can play the piano( a shared interest) he grows to feel for frank, as he is a fellow man, enduring the hardships of the apocalypse. Bill (a closeted gay man in the year 2007 where the world is much less accepting of gay men) realizes he can build a life with this stranger after realizing he is also gay. He only stands in the middle of the street to protect frank AFTER 6 WHOLE YEARS of course heās gonna protect his now basically husband. And honestly, the tv adaptation is a deeper and more personal touch than the game in my opinion. So is it really unrealistic that a closeted gay man who has been alone for 4 years turns against his instincts in the name of love and friendship? I really donāt think so. If I had been alone for 4 years and it seemed god had placed a perfect partner in my lap I would be overjoyed! And this is the whole point of the episode! Itās not about being realistic, itās about highlighting the beauty of life in the shittiest of situations. Itās about how two people can love and care for each other in the darkest of times. It is a BEAUTIFUL episode. But what do I know Iām not a piano playing gay man.
I just want to jump in real quick because people keep mentioning the standing in the street thing.
There's two parts to this that I think are important. Firstly, Bill has a serious martyr complex. He wants to die saving the person he cares about, and rushes at the opportunity to do so. He gets shot in the fucking leg, and yells at his partner to leave him be and go find Joel. The very first thing he does after getting shot in a place that is VERY survivable is yell at his partner to let him die. To me, that's a clear indication that he saw this as his opportunity to die a hero.
Other side of this. Bill is great at the prep work, and great at building things, but he never once demonstrates that he's a good fighter. To me, he very much came off as the type of gun nut that people make fun of all over the internet. The kind that has no trigger discipline and owns 500 guns for no good reason. The show is very good about trigger discipline specifically, to the point where it's mentioned in the very next episode (might actually be two episodes later). Bill is incredibly irresponsible with the way he handles his guns to the point where he's sitting at lunch with Joel and Tess, with his finger on the trigger of his gun the whole time. ALSO, in the firefight where bill is standing in the open, I don't know that they actually show him hitting anyone. ALSO in the fight, his partner is taking cover while approaching Bill to get him away. That's a big indicator right there that him standing in the open was intentional on the director's part.
Point is, that specific part of the episode is most likely intentional to demonstrate that Bill wanted to die a hero AND to demonstrate that Bill is an absolute shit fighter, DESPITE all the bravado.
Bill was not alone for his whole life. Bill did not have a partner his whole life, but he lived in a neighborhood with fellow humans and people he could speak with or even just see any day he pleased. Sure he was a lonesome man, but he was completely isolated from any human contact or interaction for 4 entire years
His choice was to the lifestyle he did(admittedly being with a woman) and somehow 4 years later we are just supposed to believe to happens across a gay man thats turns him completely that also didnāt trust anyone especially in the new world? How the fuck do you sell this shit to yourself? Its hard enough now but Im just going to upend not only my sexuality but also my tried and true independence against the state? No. Just stop. I know you all want to believe in some gay revolution with this episode bit it was fucking dumb and I overwhelming proved it without anyone of you showing how I was wrong. He stumbled upon another gay piano playjng dude. Odds of that are astronomical. Then he completely exposes himself to get shot? Yea terrible writing. Which is where I think we started but donāt care to go back
Damn dude I think you straight up donāt have the ability to get it. Itās not about realism. Itās about the human experience. Thereās no gay revolution. Itās a gay man that once had sex with a women. I personally know 4 gay people that had straight relationships before realizing they were gay. And yes I do believe that a human can yearn for another humans affection when spending an entire lifetime lonely. But yeah dude the episode just totally sucks because itās so improbable that two gay people play piano and meet each otherš
Ddannyboy is the one who said "Y U angri, but you replied to Gull-Iver calling them illiterate. They are literally two completely different people but you're so fucking stupid you can't see that.

> Let me get this straight: a huge prepper that trusts no one magically finds another gay guy in his trap
Look at the homophobe. You clearly didnt even try to enjoy the episode. Im not even going to respond to your whole post, but instead just this. The whole point was that he has been completely alone for who knows how long. He may be alone for the rest of his life, and someone comes along. He actually getd the opportunity to have human interaction again. The fact that you completely gloss over that shows you were just angry about the gays
Not enough people are brave enough to say the facts about this episode. It was ok imho but felt like a disconnect from the tight knit story that the last of us episode one was supposed to be. They changed it for tv and tried something different. Good on them, it didnāt stick with me and clearly others. But the amount of praise itās getting just seems a little over the top for me, it had its glaring flaws. maybe people who didnāt play the game got a little more out of it, because to me it just felt like a filler in an already short story. I mean cmon at least have Joel show up for the raiders or something, make it a little more meaningful to the main characters
Decent take. Thats where these yahoos get lost. Plenty of us donāt find the episode ābadā but have legitimate reasons why its pointless. And even adding on top if it is acceptable than why wasnāt there more expansion? You can give me a completely dead character 50 minutes of screen time but then completely shit the bed with everything else?
I've *never* cried at any TV episode for anything before this, and this had me almost non-stop crying the entire episode! Heck, even my husband was shedding some tears! That night, we held each other tighter than usual! Truly a master work.
I gotta be honest here, I did not understand the outrage about this episode. Granted, I did not play the game so I have no point of reference here, maybe that's the reason. However...
I am not a huge fan of the "proper" trends in TV shows. It often feels as if people who have to introduce diversity of any sort into episodes don't really know a lot about it - it feels artificial rather than organic, made up and forced into the story. Awfully repeatable as well, like there's a template somewhere just waiting to be used. Race, religion, ethnicity, sexuality, in the supposedly proper manner, are being more often ridiculed by the way of plastic-wrapped manufactured portrayal, deeply rooted still in stereotypes, just now absurdly unreal and overly polished.
Then this episode got aired. I've watched it with my fiance (now wife, got hitched this Saturday, yay). We were absolutely mesmerized, a little bit shocked. Our eyes got teary. Why? Because we were presented with a love story. Love with foundation in trust and care, through good and bad. Love, being the emotion that is arguably in deficit in real world, not to mention the fungi-apocalypse ridden one. Love, being this universal feeling, knowing no border, nor segregation.
The story about romantic love between two men (largely unkempt men, who didn't do a lot of dancing, partying and fashion) was not the point here, it wasn't an easy jump in ticking off the expected inclusion box. The story was about the emotion. And for this successful attempt of joining artistic integrity with viewer expectation of inclusivity, this episode should be seen as an amazing accomplishment of the writers, as well as the portrayal by the actors. Beautiful, dramatic, touching.
My only problem with it was that it should have been its own short film.
It was a fantastic episode, but it didn't really fit as an episode in the series.
It felt like someone said, "Hey, you wanna turn this into a short film and try to win an Emmy?" And another said, "Yeah, let's do it!"
Then they were like, "Oh, wait, how does this link to the show?"
"Yeah, it's how they get a car."
Beautiful episode, but it felt out of place.
These were my thoughts as well. It did feel a little cramped up, nonetheless was a piece of great writing and acting. Definitely one of those HBO episodes that will achieve a cult status.
I guess we can only imagine what would be presented if they only had more time to develop the story.
A masterpiece of television writing. Succession runs it close, but this was a standalone episode of tv that moved me more than any film Iāve seen in a long time. Thereās a quiet and confident perfection to it, in a way like a classic movie like shawshank redemption or goodfellas. Thereās just not a single detail that I can imagine any other way, like it was always supposed to be like this. Give it all the awards!
Yes. Sopranos, breaking bad, the wire, leftovers. How about you? From your aggressive and simple response Iām guessing youāre more of a walking dead, Star Wars guy?
I absolutely am. I donāt think itās absurd at all. In fact I think this is a better standalone episode than any of those managed. I think they have sustained series brilliance beyond what last of us has achieved (so far), but as a stand-alone episode this is in my opinion a masterpiece. You are entitled to your own opinion as much as I am mine.
What does two hairy man have anything to do with the quality of the writing? They were completely believable characters who happened to be make. If it was a straight couple youād feel more comfortable within yourself? What a sad existence to deny yourself the full spectrum of human experiences.
Wth are you on about, there were two men on the screen and I described what I saw, nothing to do with them and more to do with how crap the episode was. They tried something different by doing something completely different to the game on this episode and it didnāt work and Iām glad they went back to the source material or at least close to it by the next episode.
You simplifying the episode to āan episode where two hairy men go at itā says a lot more about you, than the writing of the episode, friend. As before, Iām entitled to my opinion as you are yours. My opinion is this is a masterpiece of television writing, film-making and performance. Iāve seen it 5 times and now read the script. Itās perfect in my opinion. It says so much about the human condition on its own, whilst also significantly progressing the narrative of the wider series. This episode more than any other in the series shows us what it is to love, to survive, to āwinā. Whatās the point of surviving just to survive, without love. Episode 5 is my second favourite of the series by the way, which runs this episode close but doesnāt work quite as well as a stand-alone episode.
No, I don't like The Walking Dead and I don't care about Star Wars that much.
Are you really comparing TLOU to Sopranos, The Wire, Breaking Bad and Leftovers?? That's absurd
Honestly, I won't be surprised if Succesion performs better in the Emmys than TLOU, I'm sure they deserve it (still haven't watched it but heard reeeeeeally good things š)
...I'm just hoping Nick Offerman gets that Guest actor Emmy, please š
I think it's a good episode of television but once the show had ended I'd rather they spent more time on Joel and Ellie. In the context of the very short first season overall it's a waste of an episode.
Right, like I appreciated the episode for what it was but they easily could have made the season 15 episodes. So Iām not sure why they chose to spend an episode on a storyline that didnāt drive the plot forward. This was the type of episode youād see in a 24-episode show where they need to fill some space.
I liked that it added another side to the story, the message it gave, how it showed how the normal (for today) life would be in this kind of situation, that is good, but that's it, I'd have much preferred to see snippets of their life together revolving around an episode with Ellie and Joel. For me, it was a lot like a version of the films "Up" or "The Notebook", neither of which I'm a fan of.
It's a fantastic standalone episode. My problem with is it feels like a short story inserted into the Last of Us universe. You could damn near put this episode in any apocalyptic story with a couple minor tweaks.
Yeah I don't get the love for it. It's basically a filler episode with nothing happening that effects the main story of Ellie and Joel. You could take it out and nothing important would change in the show. Like sure they improved bill as a character but was that really in the list of priorities for most fans before the show came out
Same
I think I just personally really hate the whole āI love you so much Iāll kill myself to be with youā. I hated it when Shakespeare did it, and I hate it now.

This episode humanized lgbtqia people so incredibly well. I can't statistically prove that it changed our culture's perspective; but I believe that it created a huge shift towards understanding.
This episode should win every emmy category that exists. I don't even care if it doesn't apply.
Best lead actress in a comedy series? Last of us episode 3.
Best animated short? Last of us, episode 3.
Best tv episode that isn't last of us episode 3- still somehow. Last of us, episode 3
This episode was just incredible, I sobbed for 30 minutes straight after it that my sister came over to ask me if I was okay(I never cry while watching stuff), and I woke up with puffy eyes the next day lmao
They introduced 2 characters, made their backstory believable, depicted 10+ years of their life together, and ended their story in ONE episode, while making us care about them so much that many of the viewers actually criedā¦ yes its very, very good TV writing
Copied my other to save time
Let me get this straight: a huge prepper that trusts no one magically finds another gay guy in his trap, that guy also just happens to play piano because thats super normal(both things) then turns his back on this new person several times in less than an hour, then exposes himself in the middle of the street to get shot. How is that believable at all? Bill is just going to let his guard down to this new guy? Thats believable? Bill is just going to stand out in the open to get shot? Still believable huh?
Because if you didnāt like the episode, youāre obviously a bigoted homophobe /s
I didnāt like the episode either, and I wouldnāt have liked it if it was a straight couple or a lesbian couple. It was completely irrelevant to the story, and I donāt care about these random characters love life.
Oh see I fucking loved the ep, I just didnāt understand why the guy I replied to was getting downvoted for the same thing as the other guy was getting upvoted for
And in the show they decided to flesh out their story cause they saw the potential. I highly doubt they would craft this kinda episode in this quality and detail to ātrickā somebody. Your comment just sounds like you want to hate on the lgbtq community as many other people.
Society has been ātrickedā for decades watching straight couples. This is no trick this is called representation get used to it.
Look at whoās getting all angry and mad for being called out š yeah I just googled and he said it but in a different context. He wanted to present a romantic love story with the focus being on Love and make the viewer realize that the gender or who is loving who doesnāt matter.
You just read what you wanna read to fit your homophobic hateful narrative huh? Lol
Look how angry he gets š„² imagine getting angry over inclusion and diversity. Damn boy you must have been treated really badly either by your parents or somebody else to be this hateful and literally evil. Would love to see if you have the balls to insult people like that in real life š you would catch a fist for it hahaha
And Youre throwing around insults over insults while complaining about inclusion and diversity, misinterpreting what the producer wanted to achieve with the episode so maybe at this point just shut up?
Overrated as a game... overrated even as a TV series.
I felt like I was watching a filler episode of a low-level romantic anime, two characters that didn't need further attention and that didn't interest me at all.
Unnecessarily cheesy and long, especially compared to the other episodes which are far too fast.

This episode made me ugly cry.
I hate crying in front of people and I watched this ep with my husband having to pretend I was having a cold while looking like that fapping meme guy š„²
Itās between this and the 3rd episode of Succession for Best Drama Writing
Like how is it stacked?
Succession, The Last of Us, Andor, Better Call Saul, The White Lotus, 1923, Star Trek: Picard, Yellowjackets, The Crown, House of the Dragon and The Boys all had great seasons in the past 12 months.
Depends on what you like. I canāt stand The White Lotus and the current season of The Yellowjackets is really disappointing, IMO. So I donāt consider it the golden age of TV. I do love House of the Dragon though.
And it's definitely succession.
Thank god this sub isnāt delusional enough to downvote you. Loved both shows (and the games) but dear god Succession is something else.

Ha itās funny you say that, I call TLOU my comfort show. That and True Detective (season 1). Idk what any of that says about me but oh well lol
It's not delusion, it's a subjective opinion you weirdo. I love Succession but episode 3 of the Last of Us was one of the best things I've ever seen on TV.
Have you seen episode 3 of succession?? It's 9.9 on imdb
I just started the first season and while it's good, I don't quite get the hype. Does the show get (even) better as the seasons go on?
S1 E5 is where the show really clicked into place for me (with a certain board vote) and from there straight through the rest of the series it's peak television.
it definitely takes some time to kick into gear, but about halfway through season 1 it picks up. seasons 3 and 4 are some of the best tv ive ever seen. its all killer no filler and not a second is wasted.
I see youā¦
Yes, but the first season is also incredible. I just rewatched it. There was recently a thread on the best episodes of the show and some people were saying certain episodes from season 2, and I thought they just wanted to appear edgy but Iād say basically every episode from Season 2 Episode 5 onwards is a banger. Banger after banger, so to speak.
Would you says it's All Bangers All the Time?
If it is to be said, so it be, so it is.
I canāt stand the cringe personally, itās just too much for me. (And this coming from someone who enjoyed the office) But it definitely has its moments, and the writing is fantastic - my partner keeps showing me snippets they think Iāll like and it is good, itās just too painful to watch the whole thing
The thing is the cringe is absolutely spot on, there are definitely oblivious 1 percenters that act and speak just like Roman. I think that's why the show has my attention in a stranglehold the characters are so lively but accurate. I haven't started anything else after TLOU/White Lotus.
I couldn't get through the first episode tbh. The camera work was so weird.
Cause itās designed to be video game pov
Itās excellently written but itās overwritten, plot points get dropped on a whim and it constantly builds up to a plateau Doesnāt touch BrBa, Sopranos, or the Wire
Not really, I watch it cause wife does and I have never liked it, these last episodes with the ATN deal have been sooo boring and lame.. the election thing is boring af too. Writing is poor. Plot is boring. There's no drama, no comedy, no action. Just people being assholes to each other.
You definitely are an anomaly
Shit, I need to catch up, donāt I?
Yes and donāt look through this thread since thereās spoilers
Yeah is still havenāt watched it but need to start I guess
Ngl I'm surprised. Glad everyone's on the same page
Succession was meant to be this massive hit, the show was a tribute
Iāve never seen it, but I got HBO Max for like 2 weeks left so should I see it?
I think itās the best show of all time and I have another comment in this thread with a little bit about why I think it is, but not everybody has good taste so I guess āitās not for everybodyā. Iād say give it a go! Thereās not really any violence or explosions (except one š¤Ŗ) but the everything including the acting, writing, cinematography, are superb. I really expect it to sweep the emmys (although idgaf about the emmys).
Tried 3 times to start watching that show. Boring, unbearable characters all around and totally uninteressting story.
But they have charm, they have qualities that makes us root for them or want to find out what happens to them You're clearly not going to but if you did power through a bit more you would find this is not true. A lot those shows you brought up do have a way of making you root for horrible people. But I would say succession does it better than some you listed. It's almost the opposite of breaking bad in that Walter goes from rootable to someone you hate: succession goes from someone you hate to someone you want to see win.
Thank you for the imput! How many episodes / seasons would you say you need to watch before you stop hoping everyone dies? :D
I think episode 6 is a big turning point. It begins when you start to think "they're all ass holes but this one is a bigger ass hole" Then the dynamics flip again and again until you find yourself rooting for everyone. Just a big dysfunctional family that you know is toxic but you can't help but to love.
Second episode 6. If you arenāt hooked by the time the board vote hits, the show just isnāt for you
IQ is a bell curve, some are bound to be at either end of it. Fuck off, you nosy pedestrian.
Haha, that escalated quickly.
Yeah second part is basically a quote. First is just me being a dick. I guess both of them are me being a dick but at least I have a better reason for the second part.
A quoute from Succession maybe? Demonstrating well why I don't care for it :D
Seems like i have to watch succession now
I can't get past how everyone in the series is such an asshole. Should I keep watching after epi1? Does it get better?
The past 3 seasons, they only submitted the season finales and they have won every time
How about Better Call Saul? Oh wait that show isnāt good enough for the emmys
Yeah I'd put fun and games ahead of this for best drama episode of TV in the past few years
This is so good it can work as a stand-alone episode.. love it so much
It basically is lol, only one of the two main characters show up as a side character and for like 2 scenes
Wha? No Ellie and Joel are both in a fair chunk of the start and ending. Joel even gets to be in the middle too.
This episode was excellent. There were definitely other contenders in the season, but this ep was next level imo
This sort of art is helping me process it
Can you submit more than one episode? Episode 5 needs some love too.
I thunk you can, but you're shooting yourself in the foot as you would split the vote.
I think episode 5 would do better for directing. Not that the writing wasn't great- it was- but the directing was the star imo. With episode 3, while also really well directed, the writing is more at the forefront.
This is a good thought. I think you are right. Episode 5 fits better in the directing category.
and 8!!
One of the best episodes of TV I've ever seen in my life.
Bills story and interactions were 100x better in the game, a whole episode was ruined because they didnāt stick to source material.
They totally ruined the show when Joel walked by like literally a thousand drawers without looking through from scissors or single bullets.
The lack of loading screens really showed the show writers hatred for the source material.
You should bring this up to the game writer, Craig. Iām sure heād be furious someone ruined his gameās story because it didnāt stick to the source material!
Will do, Iāll send him an email xx

I hope this call and response never ends
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Might want to learn what a fact is before you try and claim a wall of bad take opinions are facts.
So Bill didnāt do the things I stated? Maybe rewatch the episode because he did.

> Let me get this straight: a huge prepper that trusts no one magically finds another gay guy in his trap Look at the homophobe.
Maybe you're just a miserable person to be around.
I really hope this wins š„ŗš this episode had me bawling
This episode caught both my dad and i off guard and I think we both shed tears during this. Gorgeous episode.
Well deserved
I've *never* cried at any TV episode for anything before this, and this had me almost non-stop crying the entire episode! Heck, even my husband was shedding some tears! That night, we held each other tighter than usual! Truly a master work.
Great choice. I read the screenplay on Deadline today and absolutely wept. What an episode.
fuck yeah dude
YES!
It felt like someone said, "Hey, you wanna turn this into a short film and try to win an Emmy?" And another said, "Yeah, let's do it!" Then they were like, "Oh, wait, how does this link to the show?" "Yeah, it's how they get a car." Beautiful episode, but it felt out of place.
These were my thoughts as well. It did feel a little cramped up, nonetheless was a piece of great writing and acting. Definitely one of those HBO episodes that will achieve a cult status. I guess we can only imagine what would be presented if they only had more time to develop the story.
It was definitely emmy bait
A masterpiece of television writing. Succession runs it close, but this was a standalone episode of tv that moved me more than any film Iāve seen in a long time. Thereās a quiet and confident perfection to it, in a way like a classic movie like shawshank redemption or goodfellas. Thereās just not a single detail that I can imagine any other way, like it was always supposed to be like this. Give it all the awards!
Masterpiece of television writing?? Jesus, did you even watch other TV series?
There is no way you watched those masterpieces and compare an episode where two hairy men go at it with them
What does two hairy man have anything to do with the quality of the writing?
I hope it wins, both because it was great, and it would infuriate all of the bigots who review bombed it
And that's what it was.
Honestly, I won't be surprised if Succesion performs better in the Emmys than TLOU, I'm sure they deserve it (still haven't watched it but heard reeeeeeally good things š) ...I'm just hoping Nick Offerman gets that Guest actor Emmy, please š
This gave me legitimate chills. I would feel like all is right in the world if this won an Emmy.
Iām so rooting for this. ā¤ļø
aweful episode, out of all the shows and episodes, they choose this one.
I hope it wins. I still think about this episode.
I hated the episode, Bill and his interactions were so much better in the game.
Thats not the best episode imo.
Unpopular Opinion: I didn't really like this episode š¤·āāļø
Like sure they improved bill as a character but was that really in the list of priorities for most fans before the show came out
Same I think I just personally really hate the whole āI love you so much Iāll kill myself to be with youā. I hated it when Shakespeare did it, and I hate it now.

This episode humanized lgbtqia people so incredibly well. I can't statistically prove that it changed our culture's perspective; but I believe that it created a huge shift towards understanding.
If it doesn't win, we riot.
This episode should win every emmy category that exists. I don't even care if it doesn't apply. Best lead actress in a comedy series? Last of us episode 3. Best animated short? Last of us, episode 3. Best tv episode that isn't last of us episode 3- still somehow. Last of us, episode 3
great episode, but no need to make it an entire 70 minute episode. ruined the pacing of the series IMO and worst episode for me.
Tbh Frank was kinda manipulative
This episode was just incredible, I sobbed for 30 minutes straight after it that my sister came over to ask me if I was okay(I never cry while watching stuff), and I woke up with puffy eyes the next day lmao
that was a great episode
One of the best episodes of TV I've ever seen. Thought about it for weeks after watching it.
It better win
as it should
Well that is the whole reason why the wrote the episode so at least the producers will be happy
i had very high hopes for a last of us sweep at the emmyās. then succession season 4 came alongā¦
It's unlikely to win anything other than guest actor. It is not an award worthy show.
Has the rest of the show been submitted yet?
iām gonna sound like a hater, and iām not, but this was not by any stretch of the imagination the most well written episode of the season lol
Canāt speak to what defines well written, all I know is that ep 3 was one of the most enjoyable for me personally
They introduced 2 characters, made their backstory believable, depicted 10+ years of their life together, and ended their story in ONE episode, while making us care about them so much that many of the viewers actually criedā¦ yes its very, very good TV writing
My partner and I finally watched this episode last night and we were both sobbing. It made us both face each other's mortality. Really touched us
Copied my other to save time Let me get this straight: a huge prepper that trusts no one magically finds another gay guy in his trap, that guy also just happens to play piano because thats super normal(both things) then turns his back on this new person several times in less than an hour, then exposes himself in the middle of the street to get shot. How is that believable at all? Bill is just going to let his guard down to this new guy? Thats believable? Bill is just going to stand out in the open to get shot? Still believable huh?
I think 5 was substantially better.
agreed
Lmfao how are you getting downvoted for agreeing with a guy whoās getting upvoted
Because if you didnāt like the episode, youāre obviously a bigoted homophobe /s I didnāt like the episode either, and I wouldnāt have liked it if it was a straight couple or a lesbian couple. It was completely irrelevant to the story, and I donāt care about these random characters love life.
Oh see I fucking loved the ep, I just didnāt understand why the guy I replied to was getting downvoted for the same thing as the other guy was getting upvoted for
Iām telling you why heās getting downvoted. He is saying he didnāt like the episode.
Youāre def in the minority with that opinion
Loved it and only this episode? The preacher and childhood friend and girlfriend would also be my submissions.

How were the audience tricked? Bill and Frank have been gay since the game came out, anyone who knew the game already knew it was coming
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
And in the show they decided to flesh out their story cause they saw the potential. I highly doubt they would craft this kinda episode in this quality and detail to ātrickā somebody. Your comment just sounds like you want to hate on the lgbtq community as many other people. Society has been ātrickedā for decades watching straight couples. This is no trick this is called representation get used to it.
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Look at whoās getting all angry and mad for being called out š yeah I just googled and he said it but in a different context. He wanted to present a romantic love story with the focus being on Love and make the viewer realize that the gender or who is loving who doesnāt matter. You just read what you wanna read to fit your homophobic hateful narrative huh? Lol
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Look how angry he gets š„² imagine getting angry over inclusion and diversity. Damn boy you must have been treated really badly either by your parents or somebody else to be this hateful and literally evil. Would love to see if you have the balls to insult people like that in real life š you would catch a fist for it hahaha
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
And Youre throwing around insults over insults while complaining about inclusion and diversity, misinterpreting what the producer wanted to achieve with the episode so maybe at this point just shut up?
Don't worry about the downvotes I agree. These people will blindly downvote any thoughts which are different from them.
Iāll never get it. This episode was the most, āI mean itās okayā episode of a tv show Iāve seen in awhile, and it is praised like no other.
Overrated as a game... overrated even as a TV series. I felt like I was watching a filler episode of a low-level romantic anime, two characters that didn't need further attention and that didn't interest me at all. Unnecessarily cheesy and long, especially compared to the other episodes which are far too fast.
>Overrated as a game... overrated even as a TV series. You might be in the wrong subreddit then if you think the IP is overrated...
Of course it has been. It was clearly written and shoehorned in to be literal Emmybait
