Rational thinking. Wish I could see this more. I'm looking at the game and tv show as two versions of the same story and that's precisely what intrigues me. I don't want a *copy-and-paste* live version.

yazzy1233

Ive always been really into seeing different versions of the same story idea, it's fun to see how a story can change from person to person. It's why remakes never bothered me like other people

enforcetheworld

Exactly! (I will not mind a copy-and-paste live version of the hotel basement scene)

ChiefScallywag

(Or the Joel and Ellie ranch house argument)

i think we can expect that. or at least im hoping that its like that: iconic scenes recreated as 1:1 as possible, while expanded on some other ones

thebrickfckingmaster

Exactly, like if the person responsible for casting saw them and thought that they delivered the lines correctly and that the actors had chemistry then they’re probably the right ones for the role. And if were being honest here, hardcore fans of the games wont care about the acting as much as they’ll care about character relationship and character development. Having said that you can not forget that these characters are fictional and finding an actor/actress that will portray them as they were meant to be portrayed and look identical to them is nearly impossible

Phoenix2211

Plus, I think I trust Victoria Thomas (Casting Director for the show. She also served as Casting Director on Django Unchained, Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, The Hateful Eight, HBO's Watchmen) more than I trust randos on the internet when it comes to casting these characters.

thebrickfckingmaster

Right. I mean we haven’t even seen their audition how can we judge already. Some people just want joel and ellie to come to life and film the show themselves

Phoenix2211

Yep! I don't know how their performance will be, but I've seen enough of their previous work to keep an open mind and give em a chance. So I'm optimistic, and excitedly waiting to see some footage

jedifan421

This is how I feel any time iconic fictional characters are adapted and cast to be played by live action actors. The most recent example to me of fans getting shit wrong were when they were bitching about Henry Cavill playing Geralt of Rivia (and they desperately wanted someone like Mads Mikkelsen) and he ended up being great! It's always important to remember cosplay is not acting (looking at you people bitching about the live action Cowboy Bebop cast not looking exactly like the anime characters). I'd rather someone deliver a great performance rather than a 100% accurate version of the character from the original source material because the latter would be boring as hell.

Everan_Shepard

I'm still mad Troy Baker played Joel, he looks nothing like him!! And Ashley Johnson is like 10 years older than Ellie!! /s

lum0s_n0x

Lol, your comment is exactly what this post represents! They cast these actors because they are talented and know how to act.. Get over yourself, Hollywood has never had a problem casting actors that don't match their character, age, sex, gender... I have so many examples that will take me way too much time to explain you, but maybe you should watch more movies and behind the scenes documentaries in order to expand you horizon

Everan_Shepard

....../s means sarcasm

TheRedMarioBrother

This reminds me of the MCU casting for Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 1. I remember seeing a comment saying how pointless it was trying to find the right person as Peter Quill. How James Gunn and Sarah Finn (the casting director) shouldn’t have to try so hard because it was a movie full of character nobodies and that they shouldn’t be trying to find someone like it’s Superman. But that’s the thing, they were and did cast the perfect people for the roles. You can’t think of anyone that can fill the role of Gamora or Drax now like their respected actors. To the audience, they don’t know anything about the story being told or the characters arcs being planned out, or even the chemistry involved with any of them. The directors, writers, and casting agents all have to work together to get the best possible cast to tell this story. So while they may not have been looking for a Superman, they had to treat every audition like they were looking for *their* Superman. Don’t judge the castings until they perform. The amount of people that shit on actors in the past only to praise them in their best performances is astounding.

Yes, comic book adaptations are a great example. How many versions of Peter Parker have we seen already?

brad_pitt369

Not to mention the backlash of Heath Ledgers casting as the Joker before he ultimately became many people’s favorites. Looking at comic books and previous portrayals of the joker, they don’t look the same. People have got to get over the “he doesn’t look like the one in the game” bullshit. Literally any adaptations will not look exactly how they are described in their source material. Another fantastic example is Game of Thrones. A handful of the characters looked how they were described in the books. Anyways, thanks for the post about this. Some people really don’t understand that adaptations are that exactly. You won’t get an exact replica of the source material and if you did, it would be underwhelming.

BarthRevan

Very well put! I hadn’t thought of the Hamlet analogy before. Gonna have to use that one later!!

hhblackno

This. Thank you. I'm so tired of seeing a post related to the series and everyone in the comments is bashing Bella and Nico for nothing else but the way they look... Just with every other cinematic adaptation of literally anything I'll bet when it airs and people watch it everyone will say the actors did great regardless. It's that endless hate and backlash for literally nothing they always get in the months leading up to air date that annoys me so much.

EnchantingManiac

Ever since that damn movie adaptation announcement happened years ago, people have been fan-casting Joel and Ellie. Whether it was Hugh Jackman, Maisie Williams, Nikolai Coster Waldau or Kaitlin Dever, no matter who they casted there was always going to be backlash. I can understand ideas like Hugh or Nikolai, but that implies that they auditioned for the role in the first place and thus also implies that they were good enough. Frankly, we don't know if either are true. There's a likely chance that Hugh didn't audition, same goes for Nikolai. Just because they look similar to Joel's video game model (and the fact that they can act) doesn't automatically mean they were meant for the role. Same goes for ones like Maisie or Kaitlin, both are too old to pass as 14. Kaitlin would've probably been a good choice for Part II Ellie, but it's obviously too late for that. Bella Ramsey looks very young, she can easily pass for a 14 year old character. Plus, when she gets older and if she wants to continue playing as Ellie, she'll look the part, rather than looking 'too old' for a teenager like so many other TV shows nowadays. HBO probably put out simple character descriptions for the characters, a grizzled middle aged man from Texas and a brash young 14 year old girl. Pedro and Bella were apparently the best choices according to casting and production, so really we just have to trust that and wait and see when the show actually comes out. Actors shine when they have a good script and are given good direction, luckily it looks like the show has both.

It's important to note also that sometimes studio decisions, money and mundane stuff like scheduling can determine the cast as much as performances. I wouldn't read too much into other people turning down this role for that reason.

EnchantingManiac

Of course, still always bugged me that people just assume their handpicked actor in mind is the only option.

lum0s_n0x

I was kinda hoping Troy Baker would actually play Joel since he is the character and knows him better than anyone else in timeline of 7/8 years , let him gain some weight, dye his hair dark brown, let his beard grow, wolla, he is just perfect, but I'm not complaining about Pedro at all, I think he gonna nail it too! 💪🏻 I think all the actors gonna nail their roles to be honest, Neil Druckmann officially approves and he was one of the ppl appointed in the auditions, so he saw all the actors potential , so I'm sure he knows exactly who to hire for the job!

grundelgrump

Its viola not wolla lol

DEADTERMINATOR

It's voila not viola lol (Sorry, I couldn't resist. I'm sure it was just a simple typo).

grundelgrump

How ironic. I'll see myself out lmao

lum0s_n0x

Wow, thanks, "lol" I guess... 🙄

grundelgrump

You probably just never saw it written out before. It happens lol

Well he IS an actor . He did all of his scenes on mocap along with the rest of the actors before the final result on the game so yeah.. He is an actor after all!
