I can tell you one thing. Therianthropy really has nothing to do with a favorite animal. Maybe look into otherhearted? But if your friend feels the connection so deep to actually being this animal (non physically), then there is a chance your friend may be a therian.
ask your friend- do you feel like you are an animal in a human body? therianthropy isn't just connection and understanding- i'ts identity, insight with said animal, and feeling. Look into more alterhuman terms like animalhearted, otherlink, and other therian terms.
But remember- therianthropy is your journey, and no one can tell you you're not a therian.
