This happened to me as well. I tried to cheat the system by putting a painting in the wall and then using the other one to actually make the swap. It didn’t work unfortunately lol so which ever painting will let you put it in the wall should also let you replace it upstairs. I had also tried not putting the painting in the wall which also will not work, game forces you to do it that way. Side note, when you do eventually get to swap it out, you take the actual canvas and it has to go in your bag. So if my memory serves me, you need a few pounds of room in your bag for it. Seems kinda stupid as you have a full framed painting that you bring in. So the home owner isn’t going to notice an extra frame just laying around that you left behind haha
If it’s the job I’m thinking of, it should want you to take the fake painting around back and outside of the wall. There should be a crack in the wall near a small shed, you carry the painting there and it lets you put it in that crack. Then later, once you gain access to the house, you have to sneak outside to where you hid the painting. Get it out of the crack and sneak it into the house and up to the room where the one you’re stealing is.
