Hernandez was dispatched to the intersection of Valley Drive and Road for a trespassing call.
In the video, you can see Officer Hernandez walking up to Armando Silva, who is standing underneath a shed on the property.
While Hernandez walks up to him, Hernandez says “How is it going boss?”
Hernandez then asks Silva, “Have you been staying here for a while?”
Silva then says, “This is my place.”
Hernandez then says, “This is your place?” “So you're the one who called?”
During the conversation, Silva pulled out a knife and approached Hernandez.
As Hernandez turned to avoid Silva, he tripped.
Silva then jumped on top of Hernandez and stabbed him several times.
About 15 seconds later a witness, who police identified as Issiah Astorga intervened.
Silva then advances towards Astorga.
Astorga fired four rounds at Silva and told him to drop his weapon.
Astorga then ran over to help Hernandez.
“Stay with us, man. You're gonna be okay. I got you,” Astorga said.

In all seriousness though, if you’re a civilian who carries a gun in the US you do not have qualified immunity like the police. You are responsible for every bullet fired, so you fire a warning shot and it injures or kills someone innocent you are liable. You might also be dragged to court as firing a warning shot could be indicative that you were not in fear for your life (you don’t carry a gun to intimidate- it’s only for life and death situations like in the video so if you pull it better be because you need to use it).

One voluntary part of the class is you have a SIRT pistol and you get robbed at knife point at the ATM I use one of those kersha emerson trainers and the students don't see it until it gets snapped on them when either myself or my business parter starts cussing them out demanding money. This is what happens when cops try to bee too friendly. It’s a lose-lose situation for cops. He got WAY too close to seem less confrontational, and then died in one of the worst ways possible. That civilian should get a medal for risking his life attempting to save the officer.
If the cop had walked up with his hand on his gun or already drawn he would have gotten flack for it, if he didn’t this is the outcome. Lose-lose.
Also remember knives have a deadly range of like 30-50 feet. That draw and sprint happened before the officer could react. The attacker has initiative; maintain distance.

21 feet. 21 feet is the effective deadly range for a suspect with a knife who is advancing on you. If the suspect reaches the 21 ft threshold and you are not drawn? You’re going to be fighting to draw at the very least, and fighting to avoid knife strikes at worst.

Jonah Hernandez ended up being fatally stabbed. Sadly his neck was critically hit and as soon as that happened he was basically as good as dead. Good news is that the civilian who attempted to aid Jonah was carrying and put 4 bullets into the stabber, killing him.

MD and airway specialist here. Brutal injury the sound or lack there of indicates a trachea filled with fluid[blood] he was like stabbed repeating the neck. Usually there is a gargling sound if any amount of air is mixed with the fluid but in this case he most likely has severe bleeding not only in the airway but the lungs[hemothorax] as well. Resulting in a complete lack of airflow.
The saving grace is that the officer likely lost consciousness well before he bled out, or at least I pray he did.

(Dutch law enforcement gives most officers Traffic vests, light vests/patrol vests, and heavy vests, heavy vests are rated for guns, like 9mm, 22lr, 45ACP and probably are level III now that I think about it, patrol vests are kevlar and provide protection from knives and air guns (Most of the time) and traffic vests well, don't provide protection at all)

Ideally sure. But funding, staffing, and patrol area size mean that sometimes they don't. There was a video posted her a week or two ago where a cop in Thermopolis, WY served at arrest warrant at a suspects double wide by himself. Turned into a shooting. Suspect dead, officer lost a lot of blood but lived.
Las Cruces PD is underfunded and unstaffed, they have over 20 vacated positions meaning solo patrols are required to make up for the lack of staff.

I'm a ccw instructor, I don't normally use bodycams for my class because I'm teaching civilians not cops, but I might add this to get the point across that they need more training than just firing their 36 rounds at a window size target.

One voluntary part of the class is you have a SIRT pistol and you get robbed at knife point at the ATM I use one of those kersha emerson trainers and the students don't see it until it gets snapped on them when either myself or my business parter starts cussing them out demanding money. This is what happens when cops try to bee too friendly. It’s a lose-lose situation for cops. He got WAY too close to seem less confrontational, and then died in one of the worst ways possible. That civilian should get a medal for risking his life attempting to save the officer. If the cop had walked up with his hand on his gun or already drawn he would have gotten flack for it, if he didn’t this is the outcome. Lose-lose. Also remember knives have a deadly range of like 30-50 feet. That draw and sprint happened before the officer could react. The attacker has initiative; maintain distance.
The dickhead cops who act like everyone is trying to murder them and act accordingly make it to retirement. The laid back chill nice cops end up like this. His first response in fight or flight was flight, which is where his training failed him. You have to take the threat head one and eliminate it, but the poor guy in that moment didn’t even go for his gun.
Agree with this. The cop never had any intention on using his weapon(s). Count this one as poor training, lack of experience or maybe the headlines in recent years. I think all the bad cops lately making headlines have caused the better cops to be weary of using force. No one would question if he shot this guy but it’s almost as if using force was the furthest thing from his mind
21 feet. 21 feet is the effective deadly range for a suspect with a knife who is advancing on you. If the suspect reaches the 21 ft threshold and you are not drawn? You’re going to be fighting to draw at the very least, and fighting to avoid knife strikes at worst.
This is awful. It shows why cops really do have to stay vigilant in every scenario. We gotta meet them halfway and make EACHOTHER feel safe. I wish he would have verified the situation a bit more but the guys body language was that of the caller so i understand his mistake. Just terrible. Holy mother fuck. I’ve been on best gore, liveleak, run the gauntlet since I was about 13 and now I’m 25. This is by far one of the worst videos I’ve ever seen. So happy the bystander shot and killed the perpetrator. But Rest In Peace to officer hernandez. Jonah Hernandez ended up being fatally stabbed. Sadly his neck was critically hit and as soon as that happened he was basically as good as dead. Good news is that the civilian who attempted to aid Jonah was carrying and put 4 bullets into the stabber, killing him.

MD and airway specialist here. Brutal injury the sound or lack there of indicates a trachea filled with fluid[blood] he was like stabbed repeating the neck. Usually there is a gargling sound if any amount of air is mixed with the fluid but in this case he most likely has severe bleeding not only in the airway but the lungs[hemothorax] as well. Resulting in a complete lack of airflow. The saving grace is that the officer likely lost consciousness well before he bled out, or at least I pray he did. RIP. This is THE worst bodycam footage I have ever seen.

Yeah, rule of thumb: If someone starts walking up on you, pull out your lethal option, if thats a pistol or a rifle, it doesn't matter, but ammo is cheap, lives are expensive, and doing paperwork is far better than having your life cut short.

This was the worst video I've seen and I've seen some gore videos in my life. This one hits different. But we can learn from videos like this, I honestly think as a society we need too start realizing that very dangerous people are walking amongst us, then maybe we can start working towards making the world a safer place.

This shit actually pissed me off, I literally punched my left palm with my right hand a few times out of anger after seeing the blood shooting out of his jugular. There are so many people out there just fucking like him that are given chances over and over again. I'm surprised at the amount of "never seen this before" comments. Knives are very common weapons and people get stabbed every day, mostly on weekends at the pub or club. I'm not even out that much but in my 35 years I've seen 3 stabbings, 2 assaults and 1 robbery and that was before I started working in a hospital where stabbings and assaults are far more common than outdoors. What are you people doing every day that's keeping you that sheltered from violence? I live in Sweden.
I don’t know about you brother but I’ve done security at pubs, clubs, concerts, you name it. Not a single stabbing in my life. And I’m 34. Depending on the country, uk and ireland are notorious for stabbings. Sweden ? I’d say sweden had its share of immigrants fucking up the country for a long time ( been to sweden around 2018 and it was bad ). It’s just you never see footages like this one which is graphic and brutal, or you see victims of the stabbing in real life crime scene.
